ABSTRACT

Cistus ladanifer L. (rockrose) is a widespread shrub species of the Mediterranean region with products highly valued by the perfume and cosmetics industry. In this research, the variability in yield, chemical composition and phytotoxic activity of C. ladanifer essential oils collected from 12 plots belonging to four natural populations and settled on two different types of edaphic substrates were evaluated. The essential oils were analyzed by GC-MS. The essential oil content ranged from 0.19 to 0.42 mL/100 g. The volatile profiles were found to be rich in oxygenated sesquiterpenes and oxygenated monoterpenes. PCA analysis clustered the samples into two groups that were mainly attributed to the type of substrate on which the plants grow. Furthermore, CCA and correlation analysis revealed that soil organic matter was the most effective edaphoclimatic driver accounting for these high levels of variation in essential oil yield and composition. Finally, C. ladanifer essential oils showed strong phytotoxic activity on R. sativus seedlings, indicating its potential use as a natural bio-herbicide in agriculture. The results showed that the effect associated to local edaphoclimatic conditions not only impacted on the quality and quantity of the essential oil, but also on the industrial uses derived from its biological activities.

ABSTRACT

Wildfires are increasing in severity, and magnitude in the Mediterranean Basin in recent years, reaching a yearly average of 450 000 ha over the last decade. Drivers include climate change, land-use change, and land abandonment. Wildfire mitigation requires landscape-level action as impact to each parcel is affected by the conditions of the others. We conducted a case study of a regional-level initiative that develops community efforts to mitigate wildfires through silvo-pastoral agroforestry systems, using an integrated landscape management approach. This approach involves collaboration among stakeholders to achieve multiple objectives. In order to derive insights into its potential, we asked participating land managers: (1) What motivates their participation?, (2) How do they perceive initiative outcomes?, and as urban outmigrants with non-traditional goals are increasing in rural areas, (3) Do responses differ between rural and neo-rural participants? Our results show that managers feel highly affected by wildfires and are strongly motivated to reduce wildfire risk. Land abandonment and inappropriate policy were major concerns. The initiative was seen to have positive outcomes for individual participants as well as the region, and to stimulate community connectedness. We conclude that fit to local contexts, integrated landscape management can be a well-received approach to reducing wildfire risk. Agroforestry systems in Extremadura can act as "productive fuelbreaks" that reduce fire risk over extensive areas, while restoring traditional landscapes. We suggest that programs to reduce wildfire risk can also be used as a leverage point for financing rural revival and provision of multiple ecosystem services. ABSTRACT

The accumulation in the leaves and young stems of phenolic compounds, such as hydrolyzable and condensed tannins, constitutes a defense mechanism of plants against herbivores. Among other stressing factors, chronic herbivory endangers Quercus ilex, a tree playing a central role in Mediterranean forests. This work addressed the connections between the chemical defenses of Q. ilex leaves and their susceptibility to herbivory, quantitative traits whose relationships are modulated by environmental and genetic factors that could be useful as molecular markers for the selection of plants with improved fitness. A search for natural variants detected the polymorphism D165H in the effector domain of QiMYB-like-1, a TT2-like transcription factor whose family includes members that control the late steps of condensed tannins biosynthesis in different plant species. QiMYB-like-1 D165H polymorphism was screened by PCR-RFLP in trees from six national parks in Spain where Q. ilex has a relevant presence, revealing that, unlike most regions that match the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, homozygous plants are over-represented in "Monfragüe" and "Cabañeros", among the best examples to represent the continental Mediterranean (cM) ecosystem. Accordingly, the averages of two stress-related quantitative traits measured in leaves, herbivory index and accumulation of condensed tannins, showed asymmetric distributions depending on the clustering of trees based on ecological and genetic factors. Thus, the impact of herbivory was greater in managed forests with a low density of trees from the cM region, among which QiMYB-like-1 D165 homozygotes stand out, whereas condensed tannins accumulation was higher in leaves of QiMYB-like-1 H165 homozygotes from low-density forests, mainly in the Pyrenean (Py) region. Besides, the correlation between the contents of condensed tannins and total tannins vanished after clustering by the same factors: the cM region singularity, forest tree density, and QiMYB-like-1 genotype, among which homozygous shared the lowest link. The biogeographical and genetic constraints that modulate the contribution of condensed tannins to chemical defenses also mediated their interactions with the herbivory index, which was found positively correlated with total phenolics or tannins, suggesting an induction signal by this biotic stress. In contrast, a negative correlation was observed with condensed tannins after tree clustering by genetics factors where associations between tannins were lost. Therefore, condensed tannins might protect Q. ilex from defoliation in parks belonging to the cM ecosystem and carrying genetic factor(s) linked to the QiMYB-like-1 D165H polymorphism.

ABSTRACT

Soil quality is fundamental for ecosystem long term functionality, productivity and resilience to current climatic changes. Despite its importance, soil is lost and degraded at dramatic rates worldwide. In Europe, the Mediterranean areas are a hotspot for soil erosion and land degradation due to a combination of climatic conditions, soils, geomorphology and anthropic pressure. Soil organic carbon (SOC) is considered a key indicator of soil quality as it relates to other fundamental soil functions supporting crucial ecosystem services. In the present study, the functional relationships among SOC and other important soil properties were investigated in the topsoil of 38 sites under different land cover and management, distributed over three Mediterranean regions under strong desertification risk, with the final aim to define critical SOC ranges for fast loss of important soil functionalities. The study sites belonged to private and public landowners seeking to adopt sustainable land management practices to support ecosystem sustainability and productivity of their land. Data showed a very clear relationship between SOC concentrations and the other analyzed soil properties: total nitrogen, bulk density, cation exchange capacity, available water capacity, microbial biomass, C fractions associated to particulate organic matter and to the mineral soil component and indirectly with net N mineralization. Below 20 g SOC kg-1, additional changes of SOC concentrations resulted in a steep variation of all the analyzed soil indicators, an order of magnitude higher than the changes occurring between 50 and 100 g SOC kg-1 and 3-4 times the changes observed at 20-50 g SOC kg-1. About half of the study sites showed average SOC concentration of the topsoil centimetres <20 g SOC kg-1. For these areas the level of SOC might hence be considered critical and immediate and effective recovery management plans are needed to avoid complete land degradation in the next future.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Limb salvage is important in pediatric patients with bone sarcomas. The vascularized fibula flap is a versatile option, combined or not with a bone allograft. The authors evaluated the functional long-term outcomes, complications, and survival of using this technique in pediatric patients. METHODS: A retrospective review of 27 pediatric patients reconstructed between 2011 and 2018 with the fibula flap after bone sarcoma resection was conducted. Long-term functional outcomes, complications, and survival were assessed. Variables analyzed were age, sex, Capanna technique, follow-up, complications, additional surgeries, time to weight bearing, length discrepancy, and sport practice. RESULTS: Twenty-seven patients with a mean age of 9.3 years were included. The mean follow-up was 44.33 months. The Capanna technique was performed in 15 patients. All extremities but one were salvaged. The overall complication rate was 74.07%. Fibula fracture and nonunion rates were 34.04% and 11.11%, respectively. Partial weight bearing was resumed at a mean of 9.07 months. About 79.17% of patients with a 12-month follow-up achieved full weight bearing. An age below 8 years was significantly associated with a lower major complication rate and a shorter time to weight bearing and full weight bearing. Major complications and additional surgeries were significantly associated with longer periods until weight bearing and full weight bearing. CONCLUSIONS: The fibula flap allows the majority of extremities to be reconstructed. However, a high rate of complications and additional surgeries should be anticipated. Full weight bearing is usually achieved within the first year, with modest functional increase afterward. Less complications and a faster functional recovery are expected in patients below the age of 8 years.

ABSTRACT

Sustainability of the Mediterranean forest is threatened by oak decline, a disease of holm oak and other Quercus species that is initiated by infection with the oomycete Phytophthora cinnamomi. Focusing on the role of tannins in the chemical defense of plants, this work investigated whether tannins content in Quercus ilex is regulated by biotic stress. Screening of published genomes allowed the identification of Quercus sequences encoding enzymes for early steps of the biosynthesis of phenolic compounds, like hydrolysable tannins and condensed tannins (CT) among others, plus genes involved in the late steps of CT biosynthesis. Four days after treatment of Q. ilex seedlings by mechanical defoliation, P. cinnamomi infection and both stressors simultaneously, mRNA concentrations for tannins biosynthesis enzymes were measured in leaves. Among the transcript amount for shikimate dehydrogenase (SDH, EC 1.1.1.25), anthocyanidin reductase (EC 1.3.1.77), anthocyanidin synthase (EC 1.14.11.19) and leucoanthocyanidine reductase (EC 1.17.1.3), defoliation induced gene expression for SDH2 isoenzyme. About 4 days after infection of roots by P. cinnamomi, this up-regulation was canceled and SDH enzyme activity decreased. Furthermore, during this late stage of biotrophic interaction the pathogen switched off the correlation engaged by defoliation between the expression of SDH1 and SDH2 encoding genes and chemical defenses corresponding to total tannins, which were down-regulated. Thus, tannins biosynthesis in seedlings of Q. ilex is induced after mechanical defoliation whereas infection by the pathogen interferes with this regulation, potentially increasing the susceptibility of plants to herbivory and aggravating the impact of biotic stress.

Abdominal wall defects are a challenge for reconstructive surgeons. Although the utility of anterolateral thigh perforator (ALT) flap has been well established for lower abdominal wall reconstruction, pedicled ALT flap is usually not considered for supraumbilical defects in the most recent algorithms. The purpose of this paper is to report the results of a tunneled pedicled ALT flap for reconstruction of supraumbilical defect from a series of patients. From July 2009 to September2014, six patients underwent delayed abdominal wall coverage using pedicled ALT flaps and reinforcement with polypropylene meshes. Defects occurred after surgical complications and abdominal trauma. Flaps were tunneled beneath the rectus femoris and sartorius muscles to increase the pedicle length. The size of the skin islands ranged from 22-29 × 10-14 cm. All flaps survived and the healing of the wounds was successful. Partial dehiscence of donor site occurred in one patient, and small wound dehiscence due to minimal distal necrosis was observed in another patient. No functional problems were reported in donor site, and no complications occurred in 6-68 months of follow-up. The tunneled pedicled ALT flap may provide a reliable alternative method for abdominal wall reconstruction, including supraumbilical defects. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Farmland is a major land cover type in Europe and Africa and provides habitat for numerous species. The severe decline in farmland biodiversity of the last decades has been attributed to changes in farming practices, and organic and low-input farming are assumed to mitigate detrimental effects of agricultural intensification on biodiversity. Since the farm enterprise is the primary unit of agricultural decision making, management-related effects at the field scale need to be assessed at the farm level. Therefore, in this study, data were collected on habitat characteristics, vascular plant, earthworm, spider, and bee communities and on the corresponding agricultural management in 237 farms in 13 European and two African regions. In 15 environmental and agricultural homogeneous regions, 6-20 farms with the same farm type (e.g., arable crops, grassland, or specific permanent crops) were selected. If available, an equal number of organic and non-organic farms were randomly selected. Alternatively, farms were sampled along a gradient of management intensity. For all selected farms, the entire farmed area was mapped, which resulted in total in the mapping of 11 338 units attributed to 194 standardized habitat types, provided together with additional descriptors. On each farm, one site per available habitat type was randomly selected for species diversity investigations. Species were sampled on 2115 sites and identified to the species level by expert taxonomists. Species lists and abundance estimates are provided for each site and sampling date (one date for plants and earthworms, three dates for spiders and bees). In addition, farmers provided information about their management practices in face-to-face interviews following a standardized questionnaire. Farm management indicators for each farm are available (e.g., nitrogen input, pesticide applications, or energy input). Analyses revealed a positive effect of unproductive areas and a negative effect of intensive management on biodiversity. Communities of the four taxonomic groups strongly differed in their response to habitat characteristics, agricultural management, and regional circumstances. The data has potential for further insights into interactions of farmland biodiversity and agricultural management at site, farm, and regional scale.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to validate a virtual reality software for the recording of anthropometric measurements as a first step towards matching donors with recipients in the preoperative planning process which precedes the harvest of a facial allograft. METHODS: Anthropometric measurements of both soft and bone tissue were recorded in 5 cryopreserved human heads to compare conventional analogue measurements with digital measurements obtained from 3-dimensional (3D) reconstructions produced using AYRA software. To test the degree of correlation between both measuring methods, intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was applied to each pair of measurements. RESULTS: ICCs calculated were greater than 0.6 (substantial or almost perfect correlation) for all of the pairs of variables, with the exception of 2 of the measurements studied in bone tissue. CONCLUSIONS: In facial transplantation, preoperative planning is crucial to select an allograft whose anatomical compatibility with the recipient defect is as close as possible. The dimensions of the potential face donor must be congruent to ensure the procedure's feasibility and the adequate insertion of the allograft into the defect. The recording of anthropometric measurements with the virtual reality software displayed an equivalent correlation to those produced using a conventional analogue method. The 3D reconstructions obtained by using a virtual reality software can play a useful role to facilitate the characterization of the donor face.

ABSTRACT

Organic farming is promoted to reduce environmental impacts of agriculture, but surprisingly little is known about its effects at the farm level, the primary unit of decision making. Here we report the effects of organic farming on species diversity at the field, farm and regional levels by sampling plants, earthworms, spiders and bees in 1470 fields of 205 randomly selected organic and nonorganic farms in twelve European and African regions. Species richness is, on average, 10.5% higher in organic than nonorganic production fields, with highest gains in intensive arable fields (around +45%). Gains to species richness are partly caused by higher organism abundance and are common in plants and bees but intermittent in earthworms and spiders. Average gains are marginal +4.6% at the farm and +3.1% at the regional level, even in intensive arable regions. Additional, targeted measures are therefore needed to fulfil the commitment of organic farming to benefit farmland biodiversity.

Objectives: Update on clinical results obtained by the first worldwide facial transplantation teams as well as review of the literature concerning the main surgical, immunological, ethical, and follow-up aspects described on facial transplanted patients. Study design: MEDLINE search of articles published on “face transplantation” until March 2012. Results: Eighteen clinical cases were studied. The mean patient age was 37.5 years, with a higher prevalence of men. Main surgical indication was gunshot injuries (6 patients). All patients had previously undergone multiple conventional surgical reconstructive procedures which had failed. Altogether 8 transplant teams belonging to 4 countries participated. Thirteen partial face transplantations and 5 full face transplantations have been performed. Allografts are varied according to face anatomical components and the amount of skin, muscle, bone, and other tissues included, though all were grafted successfully and remained viable without significant postoperative surgical complications. The patient with the longest follow-up was 5 years. Two patients died 2 and 27 months after transplantation. Conclusions: Clinical experience has demonstrated the feasibility of facial transplantation as a valuable reconstructive option, but it still remains considered as an experimental procedure with unresolved issues to settle down. Results show that from a clinical, technical, and immunological standpoint, facial transplantation has achieved functional, aesthetic, and social rehabilitation in severely facial disfigured patients (AU)

Plants are able to compensate for loss of tissue due to herbivores at a variety of spatial and temporal scales, masking detrimental effects of herbivory on plant fitness at these scales. The stressing effect of herbivory could also produce instability in the development of plant modules, and measures of such instability may reflect the fitness consequences of herbivory if instability is related to components of plant fitness. We analyse the relationships between herbivory, developmental instability and production of female flowers and fruits of holm oak Quercus ilex trees by means of herbivore removal experiments. Removal of leaf herbivores reduced herbivory rates at the tree level, but had no effect on mean production of female flowers or mature fruits, whereas herbivory tended to enhance flower production and had no effect on fruit abortion at the shoot level. Differences in herbivory levels between shoots of the same branch did not affect the size and fluctuating asymmetry of intact leaves. These results indicate compensation for herbivory at the tree level and over-compensation at the shoot level in terms of allocation of resources to female flower production. Removal of insect herbivores produced an increase in the mean developmental instability of leaves at the tree level in the year following the insecticide treatment, and there was a direct relationship between herbivory rates in the current year and leaf fluctuating asymmetry the following year irrespective of herbivore removal treatment. Finally, the production of pistillate flowers and fruits by trees was inversely related to the mean fluctuating asymmetry of leaves growing the same year. Leaf fluctuating asymmetry was thus an estimator of the stressing effects of herbivory on adult trees, an effect that was delayed to the following year. As leaf fluctuating asymmetry was also related to tree fecundity, asymmetry levels provided a sensitive measure of plant performance under conditions of compensatory responses to herbivory.

Fruit abortion has been hypothesized to be a parental means of selective removal of propagules with low viability. In particular, aborted zygotes have been suggested to have developmentally deviant phenotypes, and surviving offspring may therefore give rise to adults with a developmentally stable phenotype. We tested predictions from this hypothesis using acorns of holm oaks Quercus ilex as a model system. Fecundity of oak trees was negatively related to mean fluctuating asymmetry of leaves, and abortion rates were positively related to leaf fluctuating asymmetry in at least one population. Aborted acorns were asymmetric in 83-99% of cases in three samples, while mature acorns were only asymmetric in 57-78% of cases. Acorn asymmetry was unrelated to germination probability and germination date, and had no significant effect on number of leaves, leaf mass, stem mass, seedling height or leaf area of seedlings. However, acorn asymmetry affected the trade-off between number and size of leaves in seedlings. Seedlings from asymmetric acorns showed a positive relationship between acorn size and number of leaves, but no relationships between acorn size and leaf area, while symmetric acorns showed the opposite. A positive relationship between acorn size and number of leaves in spring was found for naturally emerged seedlings that died during their first summer, whereas the number of leaves produced by surviving seedlings did not depend on acorn size. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that stressed trees selectively abort propagules of low viability, and that developmental selection acts on a measure of developmental instability of fruits.
