ABSTRACT

Hormonal regulation during food ingestion and its association with pain prompted the investigation of the impact of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) on the transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1). Both endogenous and synthetic GLP-1 and an antagonist of GLP-1, exendin 9-39, reduced heat sensitivity in naïve mice. GLP-1-derived peptides (liraglutide, exendin-4, and exendin 9-39) effectively inhibited capsaicin (CAP)-induced currents and calcium responses in cultured sensory neurons and TRPV1-expressing cell lines. Notably, the exendin 9-39 alleviated CAP-induced acute pain, as well as chronic pain induced by complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) and spared nerve injury (SNI) in mice, without causing hyperthermia associated with other TRPV1 inhibitors. Electrophysiological analyses revealed that exendin 9-39 binds to the extracellular side of TRPV1, functioning as a noncompetitive inhibitor of CAP. Exendin 9-39 did not affect proton-induced TRPV1 activation, suggesting its selective antagonism. Among exendin 9-39 fragments, exendin 20-29 specifically binds to TRPV1, alleviating pain in both acute and chronic pain models without interfering with GLP-1R function. Our study revealed a novel role for GLP-1 and its derivatives in pain relief, proposing exendin 20-29 as a promising therapeutic candidate.

Objectives: Several studies suggested that diabetes mellitus (DM) worsens the tuberculosis (TB) treatment outcome. But information regarding the association of DM with retreatment of TB is very scarce in Bangladesh. Present study aimed to assess the effects of DM on retreatment of TB. Methods: This case-control study was conducted among 254 patients (127 cases and 127 controls) from January 2022 - December 2022. Patients were recruited by purposive sampling from 92 centers of the Diabetic Association of Bangladesh (BADAS). Data were collected by face-to-face interview and record reviewing with the help of semi-structured questionnaire and checklist respectively. Quality of data was maintained in all stages of the study. Data were analyzed by using IBM SPSS software. Informed written consent was taken from each patient prior to the study. Ethical issues were maintained strictly. Results: Present study matched the age and sex of cases and controls. The study revealed that majority of case (89.0) and controls (97.6) were married. Among cases 78.0 % had DM and among controls 64.6 % had DM. Among diabetic patients, 78.8 % cases' and 64.6 % controls' HbA1C level was not within normal range. The study found that, the number of episodes of previous TB (AOR = 3.088, ρ = 0.019), presence of DM (AOR = 2.817, ρ = 0.012) and uncontrolled HbA1C level (AOR = 2.500, ρ = 0.028) were independently associated with retreatment of TB. Conclusion: The study found that presence of DM, uncontrolled HbA1C level and multiple episodes of previous TB were the risk factors for retreatment of TB. So, a separate guideline for treatment of TB-DM patients should be established to prevent retreatment cases.

With the wide applications of the Internet of Things (IoT) in smart home systems, IEEE 802.11n Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) have become a frequently chosen communication technology due to their adaptability and affordability. In a high-density network of devices such as the smart home scenerio, a host often meets interferences from other devices and unequal Received Signal Strength (RSS) from Access Points (APs). This results in throughput unfairness/insufficiency problems between hosts communicating concurrently in WLAN. Previously, we have studied the throughput request satisfaction method to address this problem. It calculates the target throughput from measured single and concurrent throughputs of hosts and controls the actual throughput at this target one by applying traffic shaping at the AP. However, the insufficiency problem of maximizing the throughput is not solved due to interferences from other hosts. In this paper, we present an extension of the throughput request satisfaction method to maximize the throughput of a high-priority host under concurrent communications. It recalculates the target throughput to increase the actual throughput as much as possible while the other hosts satisfy the least throughput. For evaluations, we conduct experiments using the test-bed system with Raspberry Pi as the AP devices in several topologies in indoor environments. The results confirm the effectiveness of our proposal.

Objectives: Soil salinity affects the growth of crop plants, leading to reduced productivity, and is a major challenge for wheat production worldwide. Various adaptations and mitigation approaches in combination with tolerant wheat genotypes can be useful for the sustainability of crop production in saline environments. However, the development of salt-tolerant wheat genotypes is one of the best and most efficient solutions for obtaining desirable yields. Considering these issues, an investigation was carried out under hydroponic nutrient culture conditions to assess the genetic variability and selection of salt-tolerant wheat genotypes by categorizing inequitable morphophysiological and genetic variability as well as multivariate analysis. Methods: To meet the objectives of this study, 100 wheat genotypes were tested hydroponically in 0 (control) and 15 dS m-1 salt solutions. Conclusion: For all the wheat genotypes grown under saline conditions, the shoot length (SL), root length (RL), shoot fresh weight (SFW), root fresh weight (RFW), total fresh weight (TFW), shoot dry weight (SDW), root dry weight (RDW), and total dry weight (TDW) decreased significantly. Furthermore, significant variation was observed among the genotypes in terms of their characteristics only under saline conditions. In the case of genetic diversity analysis, a high genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV), phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV), genetic advance in the percentage of the mean (GAM) and high heritability (h2b) were recorded for all tested wheat genotypes based on the SDW, RDW and TDW. Correlation analysis for both genotypic and phenotypic relationships revealed strong positive correlations for TDW, SDW, TFW and SFW. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that TDW, TFW, SDW, and SFW were the most discriminative variables for the wheat genotypes, which was confirmed by discriminant function analysis (DFA). PCA-biplot analysis also revealed significant positive correlations between SDW and SFW and between TDW and TFW. Hierarchical cluster analysis was performed for ten clusters based on the relative performance of the genotypes, where the genotypes were characterized into salt-tolerant, medium-salt-tolerant, medium-salt-susceptible and salt-susceptible groups. Among the genotypes, G11, G25 and G29 under cluster VII were categorized as salt tolerant based on their outstanding performance in terms of characteristics only under saline conditions. D2 analysis proved that the wheat genotypes of this cluster were highly divergent from the other cluster genotypes; as a result, these genotypes might be utilized as parents in the development of salt-tolerant wheat genotypes. The current study concluded that SDW and TDW could be employed as criteria for selecting and defining salt-tolerant genotypes during the early growth stage of wheat.

ABSTRACT

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) neuronal system-related transcription factors (TFs) play a critical role in GABA production, and GABA modulates diabetic neuropathic pain (DNP). The present study investigated the therapeutic effects of intrathecal delivery of two TFs achaete-scute homolog 1 (Ascl1) and LIM homeobox protein 6 (Lhx6) in a mouse model of DNP and elucidated their underlying mechanisms. GABA-related specific TFs, including Ascl1, Lhx6, distal-less homeobox 1, distal-less homeobox 5, the Nkx2.1 homeobox gene, and the Nkx2.2 homeobox gene, were investigated under normal and diabetic conditions. Among these, the expression of Ascl1 and Lhx6 was significantly downregulated in mice with diabetes. Therefore, a single intrathecal injection of combined lenti-Ascl1/Lhx6 was performed. Intrathecal delivery of lenti-Ascl1/Lhx6 significantly relieved mechanical allodynia and heat hyperalgesia in mice with DNP. Ascl1/Lhx6 delivery also reduced microglial activation, decreased the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines including tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin (IL)-1ß, increased the levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines including IL-4, IL-10, and IL-13, and reduced the activation of p38, c-Jun N-terminal kinase, and NF-κB in the spinal cord of mice with DNP, thereby reducing DNP. The results of this study suggest that intrathecal Ascl1/Lhx6 delivery attenuates DNP via upregulating spinal GABA neuronal function and inducing anti-inflammatory effects.

Here, we report the whole genome sequence of Stutzerimonas stutzeri strain NGHE31, isolated from Dekhar Haor, following the 2017 flash flood that resulted in mass die-offs of local wildlife. The predicted genome size is 4,434,670 bp, with 63.97% GC content, 4,035 coding sequences, 3 rRNAs, and 50 tRNAs.

ABSTRACT

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a global public health concern. Evidence shows that depression and anxiety are common among patients with COVID-19 after recovery. About one-third of the total COVID-19 cases in Bangladesh have been reported in Dhaka city. Therefore, the study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of depression and anxiety among COVID-19 survivors in Dhaka city as well as to identify the factors associated with these mental health conditions. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out among a total of 384 COVID-19 survivors aged 18 years or older. Data collection was done through face-to-face and telephone interviews using a semi-structured questionnaire. Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) scales were used to assess depression and anxiety, respectively. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the predictors of depression and anxiety among patients recovered from COVID-19. Results: The overall prevalence of depression and anxiety was 26.0% and 23.2%, respectively among COVID-19 survivors. The respondents who were ≥60 years were 2.62 and 3.02 times more likely to report depressive and anxiety symptoms, respectively than those aged 18 to 39 years. Hospitalised patients recovered from COVID-19 had a 2.18 times higher chance of developing anxiety than their non-hospitalised counterparts. COVID-19 recovered patients with comorbidities were at 3.35 and 2.97 times higher risk of depression and anxiety, respectively compared to those without comorbidities. Similarly, the respondents who had already passed a period of 15 days to 3 months after recovery showed 3.06 and 1.85 times higher odds of depression and anxiety, respectively than those who had already passed a period of above 3 to 6 months after recovery. Conclusion: The study reported a high prevalence of depression and anxiety among COVID-19 survivors living in Dhaka city. The findings suggest the need for appropriate interventions to reduce mental health complications in COVID-19 survivors.

Organic ammonium salts are widely used for surface passivation to enhance the photovoltaic (PV) performance and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the protic nature of ammonium units results in the quick degradation of perovskites due to the hydrogen bonding interaction with water molecules. Recently, organo-sulfur compounds have attracted growing interest as passivation layers on three-dimensional perovskites due to their moisture-resistive behavior. Herein, trimethylsulfonium iodide (TMSI), an aprotic S-based organic compound, is employed for surface modification of methylammonium lead iodide-based PSCs to impede moisture penetration, improve charge transfer, and passivate surface defects. The TMSI effectively passivates uncoordinated Pb through Pb···S interactions, and the optimized PSC exhibits a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.03% with an open-circuit voltage of ca. 1.13 V under one-sun illumination, while it reached up to 37.58 and 37.69% under low-intensity indoor illuminations, 1000 and 2000 lx with LED 5000 K, respectively. TMSI-treated cells display enhanced device stability by retaining 92.7% of their initial PCE after 50 days of storage in ambient conditions. This study provides a novel and effective surface reconstruction strategy with aprotic materials to improve PV performance and device stability in PSCs.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The therapeutic strategy for inflammation and degenerative calcification is of utmost importance for bioprosthetic heart valve (BHV) implanted patients. The purpose of this study was to compare the anti-inflammatory and anti-calcification effects of Entelon150® (grape seed extract), losartan, and rosuvastatin, in a rabbit model of intravascular BHV leaflet implantation in bovine pericardium. METHODS: A total of 28 rabbits were implanted with BHV leaflet in the external jugular veins. The Entelon150® group was administered 7.7 mg/kg Entelon150® twice daily for 6 weeks after surgery. The losartan and rosuvastatin groups received 5.14 mg/kg and 1 mg/kg, respectively, once per day. The control group received 1 ml of saline once daily. And then, calcium concentration was measured in the implanted BHV, and histological and molecular analyses were performed on the surrounding tissues. RESULTS: The calcium content of the implanted tissue in the Entelon150® group (0.013±0.004 mg/g) was lower than that in the control group (0.066±0.039 mg/g) (p=0.008). The losartan (0.024±0.016 mg/g, p=0.032) and rosuvastatin (0.022±0.011 mg/g, p=0.032) groups had lower calcium content than the control group, and higher tendency than the Entelon150® group. Immunohistochemistry revealed that the expressions of bone morphogenic protein 2 (BMP2), S-100, and angiotensin II type 1 receptor in the Entelon150® group showed lower tendency than those in the control group. The protein expression levels of BMP2 were reduced in the Entelon150® group compared with those in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Entelon150® exhibited a significant effect, similar to other drugs, in reducing calcification and inflammation in the intravascular bovine pericardium.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) holds great promise in achieving cancer therapy through Fenton and Fenton-like reactions, which generate highly toxic reactive species. However, CDT is limited by the lower amount of catalyst ions that can decompose already existing intracellular H2O2 and produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) to attain a therapeutic outcome. OBJECTIVES: To overcome these limitations, a tailored approach, which utilizes dual metals cations (Ag+, Fe2+) based silver pentacyanonitrosylferrate or silver nitroprusside (AgNP) were developed for Fenton like reactions that can specifically kill cancer cells by taking advantage of tumor acidic environment without used of any external stimuli. METHODS: A simple solution mixing procedure was used to synthesize AgNP as CDT agent. AgNP were structurally and morphologically characterized, and it was observed that a minimal dose of AgNP is required to destroy cancer cells with limited effects on normal cells. Moreover, comprehensive in vitro studies were conducted to evaluate antitumoral mechanism. RESULTS: AgNP have an effective ability to decompose endogenous H2O2 in cells. The decomposed endogenous H2O2 generates several different types of reactive species (•OH, O2•-) including peroxynitrite (ONOO-) species as apoptotic inducers that kill cancer cells, specifically. Cellular internalization data demonstrated that in short time, AgNP enters in lysosomes, avoid degradation and due to the acidic pH of lysosomes significantly generate high ROS levels. These data are further confirmed by the activation of different oxidative genes. Additionally, we demonstrated the biocompatibility of AgNP on mouse liver and ovarian organoids as an ex vivo model while AgNP showed the therapeutic efficacy on patient derived tumor organoids (PDTO). CONCLUSION: This work demonstrates the therapeutic application of silver nitroprusside as a multiple ROS generator utilizing Fenton like reaction. Thereby, our study exhibits a potential application of CDT against HGSOC (High Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer), a deadly cancer through altering the redox homeostasis.

ABSTRACT

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have rapidly become a prevalent photovoltaic technology owing to their simple structure, low processing cost, and remarkable increase in solar-to-electric power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, the intermittent nature of solar radiation induces some technical and financial challenges for its practical applications as a reliable power source. To address this issue, the integration of PSCs with supercapacitors (SCs) in the form of integrated photo-supercapacitors (IPSs) has gathered significant attention. This integration can balance energy availability and demand, reduce energy wastage, and stabilize power output for portable and wearable electronics. Meanwhile, the excellent optoelectronic properties with mixed electronic and ionic conductivity of metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have expanded their application as electrode and electrolyte materials for SCs and photo-supercapacitors (PSs) applications. This review provides an all-inclusive summary of the current state-of-the-art research progress of PSCs-IPSs and MHPs-based SCs and PSs by highlighting their basics and integration approaches. It also discusses the challenges and prospects of these materials and technologies.

ABSTRACT

In modern times, earbuds have become both popular and essential accessories for people to use with a wide range of devices in their everyday lives. Moreover, the respiration rate is a crucial vital sign that is sensitive to various pathological conditions. Many earbuds now come equipped with multiple sensing capabilities, including inertial and acoustic sensors. These sensors can be used by researchers to passively monitor users' vital signs, such as respiration rates. While current earbud-based breath rate estimation algorithms mostly focus on resting conditions, recent studies have demonstrated that respiration rates during physical activities can predict cardio-respiratory fitness for healthy individuals and pulmonary conditions for respiratory patients. To address this gap, we propose a novel algorithm called RRDetection that leverages the motion sensors in ordinary earbuds to detect respiration rates during light to moderate physical activities.

ABSTRACT

Skin cancer is among the most common cancer types worldwide. Automatic identification of skin cancer is complicated because of the poor contrast and apparent resemblance between skin and lesions. The rate of human death can be significantly reduced if melanoma skin cancer could be detected quickly using dermoscopy images. This research uses an anisotropic diffusion filtering method on dermoscopy images to remove multiplicative speckle noise. To do this, the fast-bounding box (FBB) method is applied here to segment the skin cancer region. We also employ 2 feature extractors to represent images. The first one is the Hybrid Feature Extractor (HFE), and second one is the convolutional neural network VGG19-based CNN. The HFE combines 3 feature extraction approaches namely, Histogram-Oriented Gradient (HOG), Local Binary Pattern (LBP), and Speed Up Robust Feature (SURF) into a single fused feature vector. The CNN method is also used to extract additional features from test and training datasets. This 2-feature vector is then fused to design the classification model. The proposed method is then employed on 2 datasets namely, ISIC 2017 and the academic torrents dataset. Our proposed method achieves 99.85%, 91.65%, and 95.70% in terms of accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity, respectively, making it more successful than previously proposed machine learning algorithms.

Neural and cognitive processes require zinc and copper homeostasis and a normal zinc/copper ratio. Ceruloplasmin, an intrinsic antioxidant protein, maintains copper homeostasis, which might also influence autism spectrum disorder (ASD). ASD children are frequently reported with altered levels of these elements with wide geographical variations. This study evaluated any alteration in plasma zinc, copper, zinc/copper ratio and serum ceruloplasmin levels in Bangladeshi ASD children with respect to healthy controls. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 67 children aged 2 to 9 years of both sexes. Among them, 35 had ASD, while 32 were age, sex and body mass index (BMI) matched apparently healthy children. Plasma zinc and copper levels were estimated by the flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry method. Serum ceruloplasmin levels were estimated by the immunoturbidimetric method. Zinc and zinc/copper ratio in the 2-9 years old ASD children group were significantly lower (p=0.032 and p=0.002 respectively). On the other hand, copper (p=0.020) and ceruloplasmin (p = 0.045) levels were significantly higher than those of apparently healthy children. ASD was significantly associated with zinc deficiency (p=0.000) and copper toxicity (p=0.05). All children were again divided into 2-5 and 6-9 years age groups according to laboratory reference values for zinc and copper. Copper toxicity was significantly associated with ASD in the 2-5 years old age group (p=0.011), with a significant difference in plasma copper levels (p=0.009) and zinc/copper ratio (p=0.001) but not serum ceruloplasmin levels (p=0.110) compared to healthy controls. Serum ceruloplasmin was positively associated with plasma copper in ASD children of all age groups. This study shows that ASD in Bangladesh can be associated with low plasma zinc and high plasma copper and serum ceruloplasmin levels.

ABSTRACT

In this Special Issue, "Featured Papers in Organometallic Chemistry", we report on the synthesis and characterization of [IPr#-PEPPSI], a new, well-defined, highly hindered Pd(II)-NHC precatalyst for cross-coupling reactions. This catalyst was commercialized in collaboration with MilliporeSigma, Burlington, ON, Canada (no. 925489) to provide academic and industrial researchers with broad access to reaction screening and optimization. The broad activity of [IPr#-PEPPSI] in cross-coupling reactions in a range of bond activations with C-N, C-O, C-Cl, C-Br, C-S and C-H cleavage is presented. A comprehensive evaluation of the steric and electronic properties is provided. Easy access to the [IPr#-PEPPSI] class of precatalysts based on modular pyridine ligands, together with the steric impact of the IPr# peralkylation framework, will facilitate the implementation of well-defined, air- and moisture-stable Pd(II)-NHC precatalysts in chemistry research.

BACKGROUND: Key populations (KPs) who are at risk of compromised situation of sexual and reproductive health and rights in Bangladesh constitute including males having sex with males, male sex workers, transgender women (locally known as hijra) and female sex workers. Globally, these key populations experience various sexual and reproductive health and rights burdens and unmet needs for ailments such as sexually transmitted infections including Neisseria Gonorrhoea, Chlamydia Trachomatis and human papillomavirus. Most key population focused interventions around the world, including Bangladesh, primarily address human immune deficiency virus and sexually transmitted infections-related concerns and provide syndromic management of sexually transmitted infections, other sexual and reproductive health and rights issues are remained overlooked that creates a lack of information in the related areas. There is currently no systematic research in Bangladesh that can produce representative data on sexual and reproductive health and rights among key populations, investigates their sexual and reproductive health and rights needs, how their needs evolve, and investigate underlying factors of sexual and reproductive health and rights issues that is crucial for informing more sexual and reproductive health and rights-friendly interventions for key populations. Keeping all these issues in mind, we are proposing to establish a sexual and reproductive health and rights surveillance system for key populations in Bangladesh. METHOD: The sexual and reproductive health and rights surveillance system will be established in Dhaka for males having sex with males, male sex workers and transgender women, and the other in Jashore for female sex workers. The duration will be for 3 years and data will be collected twice, in year one and year two adopting a mixed method repeated cross-sectional design. All key populations 15 years and above will be sampled. Behavioural data will be collected adopting a face-to-face technique and then biological samples will be collected. Those who will be found positive for human papillomavirus, will be referred to a government hospital for treatment. Free treatment will be provided to those who will be found positive for other sexually transmitted infections. In total, 2,240 key populations will be sampled. Written assent/consent will be taken from everyone. Data will be entered by Epi-Info and analysed by Stata. Report will be produced in every year. DISCUSSION: This surveillance system will be the first of its kind to systematically assess the situation of sexual and reproductive health and rights among selected key populations in Bangladesh. It is expected that this study will provide insights needed for improving the existing sexual and reproductive health and rights intervention modalities for these vulnerable and marginalized key populations.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) is critical in controlling the COVID-19 pandemic and is one of the pillars of the WHO COVID-19 Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan 2020. We conducted an Intra-Action Review (IAR) of IPC response efforts to the COVID-19 pandemic in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, to identify best practices, challenges, and recommendations for improvement of the current and future responses. METHODS: We conducted two meetings with 54 participants purposively selected from different organizations and agencies involved in the frontline implementation of IPC in Cox's Bazar district, Bangladesh. We used the IPC trigger questions from the WHO country COVID-19 IAR: trigger question database to guide the discussions. Meeting notes and transcripts were then analyzed manually using content analysis, and results were presented in text and quotes. RESULTS: Best practices included: assessments, a response plan, a working group, trainings, early case identification and isolation, hand hygiene in Health Facilities (HFs), monitoring and feedback, general masking in HFs, supportive supervision, design, infrastructure and environmental controls in Severe Acute Respiratory Infection Isolation and Treatment Centers (SARI ITCs) and HFs and waste management. Challenges included: frequent breakdown of incinerators, limited PPE supply, inconsistent adherence to IPC, lack of availability of uniforms for health workers, in particular cultural and gender appropriate uniforms and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Recommendations from the IAR were: (1) to promote the institutionalization of IPC, programs in HFs (2) establishment of IPC monitoring mechanisms in all HCFs, (3) strengthening IPC education and training in health care facilities, and (4) strengthen public health and social measures in communities. CONCLUSION: Establishing IPC programmes that include monitoring and continuous training are critical in promoting consistent and adaptive IPC practices. Response to a pandemic crisis combined with concurrent emergencies, such as protracted displacement of populations with many diverse actors, can only be successful with highly coordinated planning, leadership, resource mobilization, and close supervision.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to investigate the bone regeneration effect of bovine hydroxyapatite-processed biomaterials Bone-XB and S1-XB in a beagle mandibular defect model. A total of four saddle-type critical sizes (15 mm × 10 mm) bone defects are created in each dog: two defects in the left mandible and two defects in the right mandible. The defect control (DC) group is kept unfilled, and the other three defects are filled with three different biomaterials as follows: positive control Bio-Oss (Bio-Oss group), Bone-XB (XB group), and S1-XB (S1-XB group). Bone regeneration is evaluated by radiography, micro-computed tomography, and histological analysis. It is revealed that Bone-XB and S1-XB significantly increase newly formed bone, defect filling percentage, and bone healing score compared to the DC group, which is confirmed by bone microstructure augmentation (bone volume/total volume, trabecular number, and trabecular thickness). Interestingly, no significant differences are observed between the Bone-XB, S1-XB, and Bio-Oss groups. It is suggested that Bone-XB or S1-XB stimulates bone regeneration demonstrated by the increase in newly formed bone and bone microstructure, thereby improving bone defect filling, which is equivalent to the Bio-Oss. Therefore, bovine hydroxyapatite-processed Bone-XB or S1-XB can be considered effective biomaterials for correcting critical-size bone defects or fractures.

ABSTRACT

Epidural and intrathecal routes are the most effective drug administration methods for pain management in clinical and experimental medicine to achieve quick results, reduce required drug dosages, and overcome the adverse effects associated with the oral and parenteral routes. Beyond pain management with analgesics, the intrathecal route is more widely used for stem cell therapy, gene therapy, insulin delivery, protein therapy, and drug therapy with agonist, antagonist, or antibiotic drugs in experimental medicine. However, clear information regarding intrathecal and epidural drug delivery in rats and mice is lacking, despite differences from human medicine in terms of anatomical space and proximity to the route of entry. In this study, we discussed and compared the anatomical locations of the epidural and intrathecal spaces, cerebrospinal fluid volume, dorsal root ganglion, techniques and challenges of epidural and intrathecal injections, dosage and volume of drugs, needle and catheter sizes, and the purpose and applications of these two routes in different disease models in rats and mice. We also described intrathecal injection in relation to the dorsal root ganglion. The accumulated information about the epidural and intrathecal delivery routes could contribute to better safety, quality, and reliability in experimental research.
