ABSTRACT

AIM: The present study was conducted to analyze the clinical and histopathological cases of odontogenic tumors (OTs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present 10-year retrospective study comprised of 104 OTs. Parameters such as name, age, gender, clinical features, location, extension, etc were noted. H and E stained slides were carefully assessed by an oral pathologist and were classified according to the latest WHO classification of head and neck tumors. RESULTS: Out of 104 OTs, the most common was ameloblastoma constituting 45 cases, KCOT (28), odontoma (17), odontogenic myxoma (4), Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) (5), cementoblastoma (3) and calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (2). The p value found to be 0.01 (significant). Common OTs was ameloblastoma (25 males and 20 males), KCOT (12 males and 16 females), odontoma (10 males and 7 females), odontogenic myxoma (3 males and 1 female), CEOT (3 males and 2 females), cementoblastoma (2 males and 1 female) and calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (1 male and 1 female). Ameloblastoma, KCOT, and odontoma were predominantly seen in the age group 21-30 years, CEOT and cementoblastoma in age group 31-40 years. The difference was significant (P < 0.05). Common clinical features in OTs were facial disfigurement (65), swelling (78) and pain (55). The difference was non significant (P > 0.05). The average size of ameloblastoma was 6.8cm, KCOT was 4.2 cm, odontoma was 3.9 cm, odontogenic myxoma was 2.7 cm, CEOT was 5.5 cm, cementoblastoma was 3.8 cm and Calcifying cystic odontogenic tumour (COC) was 3.6 cm. The difference was non-significant (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Mandible exhibited more OTs as compared to the maxilla. The most common lesion was ameloblastoma, KCOT, and odontomas. We observed male predominance. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The study helps in assessing the occurrence of the odontogenic tumor. This is useful for identification and clinical management.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to evaluate the child preference for dentist attire and camouflage versus conventional syringe in reduction of anxiety. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 600 children aged 6-14 years were made to look at a set of six photos of an individual dressed with different colored apron of pink, green, blue, white colors, formal dress, and cartoon character along with conventional syringe and camouflage syringe with a toy-like appearance to permit injection of local anesthesia. Children's anxiety level during injections and with colored coat was assessed and recorded using the Modified Child Dental Anxiety Scale faces version. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: SPSS statistical software version 21 and using Chi-square test. RESULTS: Among age group of 6-8 years, 65.33% selected colorful apron, while other age groups 9-10, 11-12 years, and 13-14 years selected 47.34%, 57.34%, and 50.67% white coat, respectively (P < 0.05). For syringe, 78% of younger age group (6-10 years) preferred camouflage syringe, whereas 71% of older age group (11-14 years) preferred conventional syringe. Anxiety level of all children for syringe was more compared to that of white coat. CONCLUSION: Younger children prefer colorful attire of dentist and camouflage syringe over conventional compared to older one.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Leprosy is a disease of declining global endemicity but is still an important health-care problem in India. Pure neural leprosy is an important subset of presentations of leprosy in India. Leprosy is a known disease of the skin and nerves, but cases of pure neural involvement are relatively less. We hereby present 10 cases of pure neural leprosy in which the diagnosis of leprosy was difficult with routine methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted at the main referral center and satellite clinics of our organization. A retrospective analysis of patient records for the last four years was undertaken to identify patients presenting with predominantly neurological manifestations and uncommon presentations including those without skin lesions. The medical records of the patients were used as source of data. All the patients were subjected to a detailed clinical examination and bacteriological examination with slit-skin smears. Investigations like nerve biopsy, electromyography, and nerve conduction studies were done in patients with diagnostic difficulties. RESULTS: Patients presented with neurological symptoms like paresthesias (60%), diminished sensations (40%), nonhealing ulcers (30%), and blisters (20%). All except one had thickened nerves on clinical examination. Slit-skin smear was negative in all but one patient. Nerve biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of leprosy in seven cases. CONCLUSION: Pure neural leprosy is difficult to diagnose with routine methods. The diagnosis should be considered, especially by neurologists and dermatologists, who are more likely to see such patients with predominant neural manifestations. The diagnosis should be confirmed with nerve biopsy to prevent delay in therapy and associated complications.
