ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Comparing the effect of serious game and problem-based learning on nursing students' knowledge and clinical decision-making skill regarding the application of transfusion medicine in pediatric nursing. DESIGN AND METHODS: In this quasi-experimental study, 76 undergraduate nursing students were enrolled through a convenience sampling method, and were allocated to one of the three groups of serious game, problem-based learning, and control through the block randomization method. Data were collected using a valid and reliable 3-part researcher-made tool, completed before and two weeks after the intervention. Statistical analysis was performed using paired t-test, analysis of covariance, and Bonferroni post hoc test. A significance level of <0.05 was considered. RESULTS: After the intervention, mean scores of both knowledge and clinical decision-making skill increased significantly in both intervention groups (p < 0.05). Mean post-test scores of both knowledge and clinical decision-making skill in the serious game group, and only clinical decision-making skill in the problem-based learning group were significantly higher than the control group (p < 0.05). However, no significant difference was observed regarding mean post-test scores of both knowledge and clinical decision-making skill between the intervention groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Both serious game and problem-based learning are proven to be effective in improving nursing students' knowledge and clinical decision-making skill regarding the application of transfusion medicine in pediatric nursing. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Since learning now occurs beyond classrooms and the new generation of students spend most of their time in virtual places, utilizing technology-based teaching methods like serious games can benefit both educators and students by providing continuous education, saving their time and expenses, etc.

ABSTRACT

According to the latest guidelines, the best intervention to restore blood flow through occluded coronary arteries is angioplasty at a time less than 90 minutes. Thereby, the present study was conducted to determine the impact of implementing ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) code on door-to-balloon time in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. This clinical trial was conducted in 2019 at Booali Sina heart center hospital in Qazvin, Iran, in 2019. Fifty-eight patients with STEMI were purposively and consecutively enrolled in the study. Patients were then divided into control and intervention groups, based on their referral period. In both groups, patients were observed since their Arrived by emergency medical services to emergency department until inflating the balloon in the occluded coronary artery, and the intended times were recorded by the researchers. For Participants in the intervention group the "STEMI code" was designed and activated by an emergency physician once there is a patient experiencing a chest pain and early confirmed as a myocardial infarction. The SPSS program (v. 16) was used for data analysis at a significance level of less than 0.05. The difference in the door-to-balloon mean time in both control (113.5 ± 43.6 minutes) and intervention (79.3 ± 27.4 minutes) groups, was statistically significant (P = 0.001). Regarding other parameters, the reduction in the mean between Cath lab time (26.2 ± 18.2 minutes) and balloon time (15.5 ± 7.8 minutes) was also statistically significant (P = 0.008). In this study, implementation of the "STEMI code" could greatly prevent parallel work and squandering time while treating patients with acute myocardial infarction. As the door-to-balloon time gets shorter, the bed occupancy rate in the emergency department had reduced which in turn allowed more patients to be admitted.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Due to the potential industrial and therapeutic applications of the yeast exopolysaccharides (EPSs), there has been an increasing demand to assess these biopolymers with improved characteristics. This study aimed to characterize the EPSs from Rhodosporidium babjevae (ATCC 90942 and IBRC-M 30088) as well as to evaluate their possible antioxidant, emulsifying and antiproliferative activities. Methods: Rhodosporidium babjevae was cultured for 5 days and following isolation of supernatant, EPSs precipitated with adding of cold absolute ethanol and freeze-dried. The EPSs chemical structure was determined by FT-IR, SEM, HPLC-SEC and GC-MS. Additionally the solubility, water holding capacity and emulsifying activity of EPSs were evaluated. In vitro, antioxidant activity was investigated against DPPH, superoxide and hydroxyl radicals. Finally the EPSs consequence on the cell proliferation of human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) and Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cell lines was evaluated by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) test. Results: R. babjevae excreted 1.6±0.2 g/L of the EPSs. The EPSs had three fractions with molecular weights of 1.02 ×106 , 5×105 and 2×105 Da. Mannose and glucose were found as the main monosaccharides of the EPSs (84:16 mol%, respectively). The EPSs exhibited emulsifying activity on sun flower oil. The scavenging activities were found to be dose-dependent and higher than hyaluronic acid. Significant difference among the EPSs treatments on the proliferation of MCF-7 and MDCK cell lines was not observed (P>0.05). Conclusion: These results show the interesting potential of the EPSs from R. babjevae as biocompatible compounds for using in food and pharmaceutical fields.

ABSTRACT

AIM: This study was examined the prevalence of psychological symptoms in patients on dialysis and their relationship with spiritual well-being. METHOD: This descriptive study was conducted in Iran, and the sample consisted of 150 patients on hemodialysis. The data were collected using a checklist for demographic variables; Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales 21; and Palutzian & Ellison Spiritual Well-being Scale. RESULTS: Among the 150 participants in this study, 57.3% were female, and the others were male. The mean age of the participants was 44.6 years. The mean scores of depression, anxiety, and stress in the studied patients were 17.3, 17.6, and 19.3, respectively. The mean of the total score of spiritual well-being was 75.02±9.1. The results showed that there was a reverse and significant correlation between the total score of spiritual well-being and the levels of stress (r= -0.265, p<0.001), anxiety (r= -0.243, p<0.003), and depression (r -0.281, p<0.001). CONCLUSION: Depression, anxiety, and stress were highly prevalent in patients undergoing hemodialysis; all three had a strong relationship with the patients' level of spiritual well-being. In other words, patients with higher levels of spiritual well-being showed lower psychological symptoms.
