ABSTRACT

In this article, our main aim is to suggest enhanced families of estimators for estimating the population distribution function (DF) using twofold auxiliary evidence within the framework of simple random sampling. Numerical analysis is performed on four different actual data sets. The precision of the estimators is further investigated exhausting a simulation study. As equated with existing estimators, the suggested families of estimators have minimum mean square error (MSE) and higher percentage relative efficiency (PRE). The succeeding recommended family of estimators outperforms the first family of estimators across all data sets. These are positive indicators of its performance. The theoretical result shows that the recommended family of estimators performs better than the existing estimators. The extent of improvement in efficiency is noteworthy, indicating the superiority of the suggested estimators in terms of minimum MSE.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to generate fluconazole-loaded mucoadhesive nanogels to address the problem of hydrophobicity of fluconazole (FL). An inclusion complex was formulated with sulfhydryl-ß-CD (SH-ß-CD) followed by nanogels formation by a Schiff base reaction of carbopol 940 (CA-940) and gelatin (GE). For characterization, PXRD, FT-IR analysis, drug content, and phase solubility studies were performed. Similarly, nanogels were assessed for particle size, zeta potential, organoleptic, and spreadability studies. Moreover, drug contents, rheological, in vitro drug permeation, release kinetics, toxicity, and stability studies of nanogels were performed. Furthermore, mucoadhesive characteristics over the buccal mucosal membrane of the goat were evaluated. The nanogels formulated with a higher amount of CA-940 and subsequently loaded with the inclusion complexes of FL showed promising results. PXRD and FT-IR analysis confirmed the physical complexes by displaying a reduction in the intensity of peaks of FL. The average particle size of nanogels was in the range of 257 to 361 nm. The highest drug content of 88% was encapsulated within the FL-SH-ß-CD complex. All formulations at 0.5-1% concentration displayed no toxicity to the Caco-2 cell lines. Nanogels loaded with FL-SH-ß-CD complexes showed 18-fold improved mucoadhesion on the buccal mucous membrane of the goat when compared to simple nanogels. The in vitro permeation study exhibited significantly enhanced permeation and first-order concentration-dependent drug release was observed. On the bases of these findings, we can conclude that a mucoadhesive nanogel-based drug delivery system can be an ideal therapy for candidiasis.

ABSTRACT

Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions have become a critical aspect of the economic and sustainable development indicators of every country. In Pakistan, where there is a substantial increase in the population, industrialization, and demand for electricity production from different resources, the fear of an increase in CO2 emissions cannot be ignored. This study explores the link that betwixt CO2 emissions with different significant economic indicators in Pakistan from 1960 to 2018 using the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) modelling technique. We implemented the covariance proportion, coefficient of determination, the Durbin Watson D statistics, analysis of variance (ANOVA), variance inflating factor (VIF), the Breusch-Pagan test, the Theil's inequality, the root mean quare error (RMSE), the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), and the mean absolute error (MAE) for the diagnostics, efficiency, and validity of our model. Our results showed a significant association between increased CO2 emissions and increased electricity production from oil, gas, and other sources. An increase in electricity production from coal resources was seen to have resulted in a decrease in CO2 emissions. We observed that an increase in the gross domestic product (GDP) and population growth significantly contributed to the increased CO2 emissions. The increment in CO2 emissions resulting from industrial growth was not significant. The increment in CO2 emissions in the contemporary year is significantly associated with the preceding year's increase. The rate of increase was very alarming, a sign that no serious efforts have been channelled in this regard to reduce this phenomenon. We call for policy dialogue to devise energy-saving and CO2 emission reduction strategies to minimize the impact of climate change on industrialization, population growth, and GDP growth without deterring economic and human growth. Electricity production from different sources with no or minimal CO2 emissions should be adopted. We also recommend rigorous tree planting nationwide to help reduce the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere as well as environmental pollution.

ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a widespread metabolic disorder with a yearly 6.7 million deaths worldwide. Several treatment options are available but with common side effects like weight gain, cardiovascular diseases, neurotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, and nephrotoxicity. Therefore, ethnomedicine is gaining the interest of researchers in the treatment of DM. Ethnomedicine works by preventing intestinal absorption and hepatic production of glucose as well as enhancing glucose uptake in muscles and fatty tissues and increasing insulin secretion. A variety of plants have entered clinical trials but very few have gained approval for use. This current study provides an evaluation of such clinical trials. For this purpose, an extensive literature review was performed from a database using keywords like "ethnomedicine diabetes clinical trial", "clinical trials", "clinical trial in diabetes", "diabetes", "natural products in diabetes", "ethno-pharmacological relevance of natural products in diabetes", etc. Clinical trials of 20 plants and natural products were evaluated based on eligibility criteria. Major limitations associated with these clinical trials were a lack of patient compliance, dose-response relationship, and an evaluation of biomarkers with a small sample size and treatment duration. Measures in terms of strict regulations can be considered to achieve quality clinical trials. A specific goal of this systematic review is to discuss DM treatment through ethnomedicine based on recent clinical trials of the past 7 years.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Cefixime (CFX) belongs to a group of third-generation cephalosporin antibiotics with low water solubility and low intestinal permeability, which ultimately leads to significantly low bioavailability. AIM: This study aimed to increase solubility, improve drug release, and intestinal permeability of CFX by loading into SEDDS. METHODS: Suitable excipients were selected based on drug solubility, percent transmittance, and emulsification efficiency. Pseudo-ternary phase diagram was fabricated for the identification of effective self-emulsification region. The best probably optimized formulations were further assessed for encumbered drug contents, emulsification time, cloud point measurement, robustness to dilution, mean droplet size, zeta potential, polydispersity index (PDI), and thermodynamic and chemical stability. Moreover, in vitro drug release studies and ex vivo permeation studies were carried out and apparent drug permeability Papp of different formulations was compared with the marketed brands of CFX. RESULTS: Amongst the four tested SEDDS formulations, F-2 formulation exhibited the highest drug loading of 96.32%, emulsification time of 40.37 ± 3 s, mean droplet size of 19.01 ± 1.12 nm, and demonstrated improved long-term thermodynamic and chemical stability when stored at 4 °C. Release studies revealed a drug release of 97.32 ± 4.82% within 60 min in simulated gastric fluid. Similarly, 97.12 ± 5.02% release of CFX was observed in simulated intestinal fluid within 120 min; however, 85.13 ± 3.23% release of CFX was observed from the marketed product. Ex vivo permeation studies displayed a 2.7-fold increase apparent permeability compared to the marketed product in 5 h. CONCLUSION: Owing to the significantly improved drug solubility, in vitro release and better antibacterial activity, it can be assumed that CFX-loaded SEDDS might lead to an increased bioavailability and antibacterial activity, possibly leading to improved therapeutic effectiveness.

ABSTRACT

Noise annoyance is recognized as an expression of physiological and psychological strain in acoustical environment. The studies on prediction of noise annoyance and parametric sensitivity analysis of factors affecting it have been rarely reported in India. A hybrid ConvLSTM technique was developed in the study to predict traffic-induced noise annoyance in 484 people based on ambient noise levels, as well as survey information. Ambient noise levels were obtained at different locations of Dhanbad city using sound level meter at varying intervals, viz. 09AM-12PM, 03PM-06PM, and 08PM-11PM. The proposed method was compared with some well-known neural network techniques such as K-nearest neighbors (KNN), artificial neural network (ANN), recurrent neural network (RNN), and long-short-term memory (LSTM). The experimental results indicate that the proposed method outperforms other techniques and can be a reliable approach for prediction of noise annoyance with an accuracy of 93.8%. It can be concluded from noise maps that the noise levels in all locations of the Dhanbad city were higher than 70 dB(A) and noise sensitivity is the most important input variable of traffic-induced noise annoyance, followed by honking noise, education, exposure hours, LAeq, sleeping disorder, and chronic disease. The study shall facilitate in developing a decision support tool for prediction of noise annoyance and promoting implementation of suitable public policy in urban cities.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of green tax incentives such as investment tax credit and taxable income deductions related to the environmental sustainability and climate change which are becoming more popular in developing countries, whereas introducing green tax incentives related to the environment and climate change helps and meets the sustainability objectives of growth and development. For this purpose, we selected the top 100 listed companies on the Swedish stock market (SSM), Nasdaq Stockholm (SN), in order to better understand the real facts and figures of green tax environment. This study uses a longitudinal research design because sample observations vary across firms and over a short time and conducts probit and logistic regression to identify the beneficiaries of the tax incentives. The findings show that different firm-level characteristics significantly impact the probability of being an ITC beneficiary.

ABSTRACT

Nanogel has attracted considerable attention as one of the most versatile drug delivery systems, especially for site-specific and/or time-controlled delivery of the chemotherapeutic agent. The main objective of this study was to prepare the polymeric nanogel characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning, and oral acute toxicity. Free radical polymerization was done for the fabrication of polymeric nanogel. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to confirm the successful free radical polymerization. Various techniques such as x-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetric, and thermogravimetric analysis measurement were used to investigate the thermal behavior and crystallinity of developed nanogel. Parameters such as swelling, drug loading, and in vitro drug release is enhanced as polymers and monomers concentrations increase while these parameters decrease in case of increasing crosslinker concentration. The oral biocompatibility results of developed nanogel exhibited no toxicity in rabbits. Histopathological changes were observed between empty and loaded group. The nanosized gel offers a specific surface area which increases the stability of loaded drug (oxaliplatin) and bioavailability of the drug (oxaliplatin) as compared to the conventional drug delivery systems.

ABSTRACT

Intravesical drug delivery is a direct drug delivery approach for the treatment of various bladder diseases. The human urinary bladder has distinctive anatomy, making it an effective barrier against any toxic agent seeking entry into the bloodstream. This screening function of the bladder derives from the structure of the urothelium, which acts as a semi-permeable barrier. However, various diseases related to the urinary bladder, such as hyperactive bladder syndrome, interstitial cystitis, cancer, urinary obstructions, or urinary tract infections, can alter the bladder's natural function. Consequently, the intravesical route of drug delivery can effectively treat such diseases as it offers site-specific drug action with minimum side effects. Intravesical drug delivery is the direct instillation of medicinal drugs into the urinary bladder via a urethral catheter. However, there are some limitations to this method of drug delivery, including the risk of washout of the therapeutic agents with frequent urination. Moreover, due to the limited permeability of the urinary bladder walls, the therapeutic agents are diluted before the process of permeation, and consequently, their efficiency is compromised. Therefore, various types of nanomaterial-based delivery systems are being employed in intravesical drug delivery to enhance the drug penetration and retention at the targeted site. This review article covers the various nanomaterials used for intravesical drug delivery and future aspects of these nanomaterials for intravesical drug delivery.

ABSTRACT

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most abundant type of epithelial lung cancer being diagnosed after 40% of invasions of excrescence in pulmonary tissues. According to WHO, 30% of NSCLC patients can be cured if diagnosed and treated early. Mutations play an important role in advanced stage NSCLC treatment, which includes critical proteins necessary for cellular growth and replication. Restricting such mutations may improve survival in lung cancer patients. Newer technologies include endoscopic bronchial ultrasonography and esophageal ultrasonography. Currently, policymaking or decision-making for treatment regimens merely depends on the genomic alterations and mutations. DNA sequencing, methylation, protein, and fragmented DNA analysis do NSCLC screening. Achievement of these goals requires consideration of available therapeutics in current anticancer approaches for improving quality of life and treatment outcomes for NSCLC patient. The specific goals of this review are to discuss first-line and second-line therapies for advanced-stage NSCLC and molecularly targeted therapy including thoughtful discussion on precise role of treatment strategies in specific tumors. Also, concerned diagnostics, new clinical trial designs, and pursuing appropriate combinations of radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy with biological therapy for exceptional cases considering resistance mechanisms and palliative care will be discussed.

ABSTRACT

Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) applications have grown immensely in the past few years. However, security and privacy of the user are two major obstacles in their development. The complex and very sensitive nature of the body-mounted sensors means the traditional network layer security arrangements are not sufficient to employ their full potential, and novel solutions are necessary. In contrast, security methods based on physical layers tend to be more suitable and have simple requirements. The problem of initial trust needs to be addressed as a prelude to the physical layer security key arrangement. This paper proposes a patterns-of-life aided authentication model to solve this issue. The model employs the wireless channel fingerprint created by the user's behavior characterization. The performance of the proposed model is established through experimental measurements at 2.45 GHz. Experimental results show that high correlation values of 0.852 to 0.959 with the habitual action of the user in different scenarios can be used for auxiliary identity authentication, which is a scalable result for future studies.
