ABSTRACT

Gastric cancer (GC) is the fifth most frequent malignancy worldwide and has a high mortality rate related to late diagnosis. Although the gold standard for the GC diagnosis is endoscopy with biopsy, nonetheless, it is not cost-effective and is invasive for the patient. The Human leukocyte antigen G (HLA-G) molecule is a checkpoint of the immune response. Its overexpression in cancer is associated with immune evasion, metastasis, poor prognosis, and lower overall survival. We evaluate the plasma levels of soluble HLA-G, (sHLA-G) in patients with GC and benign gastric pathologies using an ELISA test. A higher concentration of sHLA-G in patients with GC than in those with benign pathologies, higher levels of plasma sHLA-G in women with GC compared with men and significant differences in the sHLA-G levels between the benign gastric pathologies evaluated, was our main findings. As no significant differences were found between the GC assessed stages in our study population, we suggest that sHLA-G is not an adequate marker for staging GC, but it does have diagnostic potential. In addition to providing information on the potential of sHLA-G as a diagnostic marker for GC, our study demonstrate that HLA-G molecules can be found in the membrane of exosomes, which highlights the need to perform studies with a larger number of samples to explore the functional implications of HLA-G positive exosomes in the context of gastric cancer, and to determine the clinical significance and possible applications of these findings in the development of non-invasive diagnostic methods.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Diet is known to strongly modulate the composition of the gut microbiota, thereby affecting health conditions and disease. Natural BARF-type and commercial diets have been used for feeding pets (e.g. dogs and cats) promoting changes in the canine microbiota in terms of abundance, richness, and diversity that may favor certain metabolic processes and resistance to certain infectious agents. Therefore, the present study sought to identify microbiota changes in dogs fed with a BARF-type diet versus dogs fed with a commercial diet by sequencing the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene. METHODS: The microbiota of dogs fed with the BARF-diet (n = 20) and commercial-diet (n = 26) was studied using fecal samples. A metabarcoding strategy was employed by sequencing the V4 hypervariable region of the 16S rRNA gene using the Illumina HiSeq platform. DADA2 was used to assess the quality profile of the reads and to determine the core sample inference algorithm of the reads to infer amplicon sequence variants (ASVs). The taxonomic assignment was performed using sequences from the Silva v138 formatted reference database. The microbial diversity analysis was performed using the R package Phyloseq, which was used to calculate diversity and abundance indices and construct the respective graphs. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) effect size analysis (LEfSe) was used to identify the differentially abundant taxa in the BARF group versus the commercial-diet group. RESULTS: The diet causes changes in fecal microbiota composition and diversity, with richness and diversity being higher in BARF-fed dogs. Beta diversity analyses confirmed that diet is directly related to microbiota composition regardless of breed or sex. Differentially enriched taxa were identified in each of the diets as Fusobacterium, Bacteroides, and Clostridium perfringens in BARF-fed dogs and Prevotella, Turicibacter, Faecalibacterium, and Peptacetobacter (Clostridium) hiranonis, mostly relevant in carbohydrate metabolism, in commercial-fed dogs. CONCLUSIONS: This study is the first one carried out in dogs from Colombia that seeks to identify changes in the intestinal microbiota concerning natural BARF type diet and commercial diet using a metabarcoding approach. Important differences were identified in terms of richness, diversity, and differentially enriched bacteria in each of the diets. The microbiota of dogs fed the BARF diet was characterized by higher richness and diversity compared to the commercial diet. However, it was identified that BARF-fed dogs can potentially acquire more opportunistic infections by pathogens of importance such as C. perfringens. Most of the taxa enriched in commercial diet-fed dogs are linked to carbohydrate metabolism, which may be directly related to diet composition.

ABSTRACT

El ramo comunicante mediano-ulnar (RCMU) es la conexión que se origina del nervio mediano (NM) o alguno de sus ramos, para unirse al nervio ulnar (NU) en el antebrazo humano. Cuando este RCMU está presente, determina una prevalencia que oscila entre un 8 % y un 32 %, de tal manera los axones del NM se trasladen al NU, modificando la inervación habitual de los músculos de la mano. Nuestro objetivo fue determinar la prevalencia, biometría, topografía y relaciones anatómicas del RCMU. Adicionalmente, se estableció la coexistencia de otras conexiones entre los NM y NU en el antebrazo y la mano. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo, cuantitativo, no experimental y transeccional. Disecamos 30 antebrazos humanos de individuos adultos, pertenecientes al programa de donación cadavérica de la Pontificia Universidad Católicade Chile. Las muestras estaban fijadas en formalina y a 4 °C. El RCMU se presentó en 5 casos (17 %). De estos ramos, tres surgieron del nervio interóseo anterior (NIA) (60 %) y dos (40 %) del ramo que el NM aporta a los músculos superficiales del compartimiento anterior del antebrazo. Estos se clasificaron de acuerdo a la literatura, así el tipo Ic se presentó en tres casos (60 %), y el tipo Ia en dos (40 %). La longitud promedio del RCMU fue de 53,9 mm. El origen del RCMU se ubicó en el tercio proximal y la conexión de este con el NU se estableció en el tercio medio del antebrazo. En tres casos (60 %) se observó la coexistencia del RCMU y una conexión entre los ramos digitales palmares comunes. Estos hallazgos confirman que el RCMU mayoritariamente se extiende entre el nervio interóseo anterior y el NU, y su presencia podría modificar la distribución nerviosa de la mano.


SUMMARY: The median-ulnar communicating branch (MUCB) is the communication that originates from the median nerve (MN) or one of its branches, to join the ulnar nerve (UN) in the human forearm. With a prevalence that oscillates between 8% and 32%, when this MUCB is present, it establishes that axons from the MN move to the UN, modifying the normal innervation of the muscles of the hand. Our aim was to determine the prevalence, biometry and topography and anatomical relationships of the MUCB. Additionally, the coexistence of this MUCB with other connections between the MN and UN was established. A descriptive, quantitative, non experimental and transectional study was conducted. Thirty adult human forearms belonging to the cadaveric donation program of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile were dissected. The samples were fixed in formalin and stored at 4 °C. The MUCB appeared in 5 cases (17%). Of these, three originated from the anterior interosseous nerve (60%) and two (40%) arose from the branch that the MN gives it to the superficial muscles of the anterior compartment of the forearm. These were classified according to the literature consulted, obtaining that Group Ic occurred in three cases (60%), and Group Ia in two (40%). The average MUCB length was 53.9 mm. The origin of the MUCB was on average 21% of the length of the forearm from the biepicondylar line. The connection of this MUCB with the UN was located on average at 44% from this line. In three cases (60%) the coexistence of the MUCB and a connection between the common palmar digital nerves was observed. These findings confirm that the RCMU is generally established between the anterior interosseous nerve of forearm and NU, and its presence could modify the nerve distribution of the hand.

ABSTRACT

Primary breast angiosarcoma, with de novo appearance and not associated with exposure to radiation or lymphedema, is a rare pathology representing less than 0.05% of the neoplasms related to this organ. The pathology is characterized by its aggressiveness, poor prognosis, and difficulties in its differential diagnosis. This article reports the case of a 55-year-old white woman with no family history of cancer, with a rapidly growing mass in the left mammary gland that ulcerates and bleeds. It is confirmed as primary breast angiosarcoma by immunostaining in the tumor tissue for CD31, CD34, and FLI-1. In addition, a sample of neoplastic and healthy tissues is collected from the patient for RNA sequencing; the results are contrasted with a tissue sample from a patient with Luminal A subtype of breast cancer, as well as data from other cases of angiosarcoma available in public databases. These findings revealed a genetic profile associated with the immune and inflammatory response in the patient's sample when compared to available angiosarcoma data; these molecular patterns are consistent with other recent studies. Due to the rarity of the disease, the studies carried out on each patient contribute to the expanding knowledge of the etiology and molecular pathways that are still partially known and continue to be the subject of research. Aside from a comparative transcriptome study, this article aims to provide an update on the state of knowledge about this disease.

ABSTRACT

Exosomes carry molecules of great biological and clinical interest, such as miRNAs. The contents of exosomes vary between healthy controls and cancer patients. Therefore, miRNAs and other molecules transported in exosomes are considered a potential source of diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in cancer. Many miRNAs have been detected in recent years. Consequently, a substantial amount of miRNA-related data comparing patients and healthy individuals is available, which contributes to a better understanding of the initiation, development, malignancy, and metastasis of cancer using non-invasive sampling procedures. However, a re-analysis of available ncRNA data is rare. This study used available data about miRNAs in exosomes comparing healthy individuals and cancer patients to identify possible global changes related to the presence of cancer. A robust transcriptomic analysis identified two common miRNAs (miR-495-3p and miR-543) deregulated in five cancer datasets. They had already been implicated in different cancers but not reported in exosomes circulating in blood. The study also examined their target genes and the implications of these genes for functional processes.

SUMMARY: University teaching in Chile has been influenced in recent decades by changes to the education system, which has increased universities and academic offerings and, therefore, the demand for new instructors. Teaching morphological sciences has not been exempt from these changes, with new instructors needed to fill the growing offerings of programs that include anatomy, embryology and histology. The aim was to understand the profile of the academics teaching morphology in Chile in 2020. A voluntary online survey was applied to 213 university morphology teachers, in which information was collected on professional and academic training, geographical distribution, gender, continuing academic education and employment situation. Overall, the results show that 65.9 % of instructors were men and 35.1 % women, and most (34.6 %) had between 5 and 10 years in morphology, and a master's degree was predominant (53.27 %). In the area of anatomy, 46 % of instructors were physiotherapists and 24.6 % dentists, whereas in the areas of histology and embryology, the group was diverse. In terms of employment, 49.06 % stated they worked full time, mainly in teaching.41.31 % of the instructors were concentrated in the Metropolitan Region. There was no association between gender and graduate training, maximum academic degree attained, type of workday or academic profile, but there was one by disciplinary area. The conclusion drawn is that morphology teachers in Chilean universities are part of a wide range of professionals dedicated to different disciplinary areas, with master's degree and/or specialization, located mainly in the Metropolitan Region. This multidisciplinary profile demonstrates the mainstreaming of morphology teaching in Chile.


RESUMEN: La docencia universitaria en Chile se ha visto influenciada en las últimas décadas por modificaciones del sistema educativo, las cuales generaron un incremento de universidades y oferta académica y, por ende, demanda de nuevos docentes. La enseñanza de las ciencias morfológicas no ha quedado exenta de estos cambios, teniendo que enfrentar la necesidad de nuevos docentes requeridos para suplir la creciente oferta de programas que incluyen a la anatomía, embriología e histología. El objetivo fue conocer el perfil de los académicos que realizaron docencia de morfología en Chile el año 2020. Se aplicó una encuesta online voluntaria a 213 académicos universitarios de morfología, en la cual se recopiló información sobre formación profesional, académica, distribución geográfica, género, perfeccionamiento académico y situación laboral. Los resultados, en general, muestran que el 65,9 % de los docentes eran hombres y un 35,1 % mujeres, los que en su mayoría (34,6 %) tenían entre 5 y 10 años vinculados a la morfología y donde prevalecía el grado académico de magíster (53,27 %). En el área de la anatomía el 46 % de los docentes correspondió a kinesiólogos y el 24,6 % a odontólogos, mientras que, en las áreas de histología y embriología el grupo fue misceláneo. En el ámbito laboral el 49,06 % declaró tener jornada completa, destinada principalmente a la docencia. El 41,31 % de los docentes se concentró en la Región Metropolitana. No hubo asociación entre género y formación de postgrado, máximo grado académico alcanzado, tipo de jornada y perfil académico, pero si hubo por área disciplinar. Se concluye que los docentes de morfología en Chile pertenecen a un amplio espectro de profesionales dedicados a distintas áreas disciplinares, con formación de magíster y/o especialización, ubicados principalmente en la Región Metropolitana. Este perfil multidisciplinar demuestra la transversalidad de la docencia morfológica en Chile.

ABSTRACT

Noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) play prominent roles in the regulation of gene expression via their interactions with other biological molecules such as proteins and nucleic acids. Although much of our knowledge about how these ncRNAs operate in different biological processes has been obtained from experimental findings, computational biology can also clearly substantially boost this knowledge by suggesting possible novel interactions of these ncRNAs with other molecules. Computational predictions are thus used as an alternative source of new insights through a process of mutual enrichment because the information obtained through experiments continuously feeds through into computational methods. The results of these predictions in turn shed light on possible interactions that are subsequently validated experimentally. This review describes the latest advances in databases, bioinformatic tools, and new in silico strategies that allow the establishment or prediction of biological interactions of ncRNAs, particularly miRNAs and lncRNAs. The ncRNA species described in this work have a special emphasis on those found in humans, but information on ncRNA of other species is also included.

ABSTRACT

Exosomes are lipid membrane-enclosed vesicles released by all cell types that act at the paracrine or endocrine level to favor cell differentiation, tissue homeostasis, organ remodeling and immune regulation. Their biosynthesis begins with a cell membrane invagination which generates an early endosome that matures to a late endosome. By inward budding of the late endosome membrane, a multivesicular body (MVB) with intraluminal vesicles (ILVs) is generated. The fusion of MVBs with the plasma membrane releases ILVs into the extracellular space as exosomes, ranging in size from 30 to 100 nm in diameter. The bilipid exosome membrane is rich in cholesterol, ceramides and phosphatidylserine and can be loaded with DNA, RNA, microRNAs, proteins and lipids. It has been demonstrated that exosome secretion is a common mechanism used by the tumor to generate an immunosuppressive microenvironment that favors cancer development and progression, allowing tumor escape from immune control. Due to their ability to transport proteins, lipids and nucleic acids from the cell that gave rise to them, exosomes can be used as a source of biomarkers with great potential for clinical applications in diagnostic, prognostic or therapeutic areas. This article will review the latest research findings on exosomes and their contribution to cancer development.

ABSTRACT

La incapacidad temporal es el beneficio asistencial y económico que se le reconoce a trabajadoras y trabajadores cotizantes del sistema de seguridad social por la afectación en su capacidad laboral e implica ausentismo y asistencia para el retorno al trabajo. El objetivo de esta revisión es explorar las concepciones, los sujetos y las situaciones protegidas por esta prestación en diferentes países. Se realizó una revisión de literatura en bases de datos y sitios web oficiales de Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Perú, Ecuador, México, España y Portugal. Para el análisis se diseñaron matrices y un cuadro descriptivo con identificadores normativos; los hallazgos se organizaron en categorías. Se encontraron semejanzas en los elementos conceptuales, eventos y sujetos de protección. Las diferencias están en los requisitos y duración. La incapacidad temporal es un beneficio universal y finito reconocido como un derecho laboral y de la seguridad social. Por su impacto económico y social, debe ser estudiada desde la gestión en salud y de los riesgos laborales para el diseño de planes y programas, así como de estrategias regionales con enfoque de equidad, considerando la ocupación y el ámbito laboral.


Sick leave is an economic and support benefit of a social security system for workers who contribute to it, when their work capacity has been impacted. It implies absenteeism and assistance to return to work. This review aims to explore the conceptions and protected subjects and events of this benefit in different countries. A literature review was carried out on databases and official websites of Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Perú, Ecuador, México, Spain, and Portugal. For the analysis, matrices and a descriptive table with normative identifiers were designed. The findings were organized into categories. Similarities were found in conceptual elements and the protected events and subjects. The differences include the requirements and duration. Sick leave is a universal and finite benefit recognized as a labor and social security right. Due to its economic and social impact, it must be studied from health and occupational risks management to design plans and programs and regional strategies focusing on equity, considering the occupation and the work environment.


A licença médica é o benefício assistencial e econômico que é reconhecido aos trabalhadores e trabalhadoras contribuintes do sistema de previdência social pelo impacto na sua capacidade para o trabalho e implica absentismo e assistência no regresso ao trabalho. O objetivo desta revisão é explorar as concepções, temas e situações protegidas por esse benefício em diferentes países. Foi realizada uma revisão da literatura em bases de dados e em sites oficiais da Colômbia, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Equador, México, Espanha e Portugal. Para a análise, foram elaboradas matrizes e uma tabela descritiva com identificadores normativos; os resultados foram organizados em categorias. Semelhanças foram encontradas nos elementos conceituais, eventos e temas de proteção. As diferenças estão nos requisitos e na duração. A licença médica é um benefício universal e finito, reconhecido como direito trabalhista e previdenciário. Devido ao seu impacto econômico e social, deve ser estudada a partir da gestão em saúde e dos riscos trabalhistas para o esboço de planos e programas; bem como das estratégias regionais com foco na equidade, considerando a ocupação e o ambiente de trabalho.

RESUMEN: La percepción del dolor resulta de múltiples y dinámicos mecanismos en el sistema nervioso central (SNC) y periférico que inhiben o facilitan el estímulo y respuesta nociceptiva. Sin embargo, la principal capacidad de modulación esta a cargo del SNC. Los estímulos nociceptivos son detectados por terminaciones nerviosas libres de neuronas periféricas que sinaptan con neuronas aferentes secundarias de la médula espinal. Luego estas fibras decusan para formar las vías nociceptivas ascendentes. Una vez alcanzadas las estructuras subcorticales, se activan las neuronas del tálamo, quienes envían el estímulo hacia la corteza somatosensorial, desencadenando la percepción consciente del dolor y activando el sistema inhibitorio descendente. Para que la modulación nociceptiva se realice, es necesaria la participación de diversas sustancias o neurotransmisores que conectan áreas del SNC especializadas. Por lo tanto, el objetivo de este estudio fue realizar una revisión de la literatura respecto de los mecanismos que participan en los procesos de modulación central del dolor.


SUMMARY: Pain perception results from multiple and dynamic mechanisms in the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system that inhibit or facilitate stimulation and nociceptive response. However, neuromodulation is mainly a function of the CNS. Nociceptive stimulus is detected by peripheral neurons receptors that synapse with the secondary afferent neurons of the spinal cord. These fibers cross to conform the ascending nociceptive pathways. Once the subcortical structures are reached, the thalamus`s neurons are activated; the thalamus send the stimulus to the somatosensory cortex, triggering the conscious perception of pain and activating the descending inhibitory system. For the nociceptive modulation to be carried out, the participation of various substances or neurotransmitters that connect specialized CNS areas is necessary. Therefore, the aim of this study was to review the literature regarding the mechanisms involved in central pain modulation processes.

ABSTRACT

RESUMEN: Las conexiones intertendinosas (CIT) son bandas estrechas de tejido conectivo que unen tendones adyacentes del músculo extensor de los dedos. Dichas bandas se ubican de manera superficial en el dorso del segundo, tercer y cuarto espacios intermetacarpianos (EIMC) presentando funciones importantes como colaborar en la estabilización de la articulación metacarpofalángica y permitir la redistribución de fuerzas extensoras sobre esta articulación. El objetivo del presente estudio fue establecer la biometría de las CIT. Para ello se utilizaron 24 miembros superiores formolizados, pertenecientes al laboratorio de Anatomía, de la Universidad Andrés Bello, sede Viña del Mar, Chile. Se registraron las longitudes de inserción lateral y medial, el ancho y la longitud total de cada CIT. Siguiendo dos criterios, las CIT se clasificaron según morfología y además se localizaron según tercios del dorso de la mano. De las 69 CIT encontradas, el 39 % presentó una disposición transversa y 61 % una oblicua. En relación a la clasificación morfológica de la CIT se identificó un 29 % del tipo 1; 39 % del tipo 2. Para el caso del tipo 3, un 20 % presentó la forma "r" y en un 12 % la forma "y". Respecto a su localización se estableció que en el segundo EIMC el 18 % de las CIT se ubicaron el tercio distal del dorso y el 82 % en el tercio medio. En el tercer EIMC el 96 % de las CIT se localizó en el tercio distal y 4 % en el tercio medio. En el cuarto EIMC el 96 % se ubicó en el tercio distal y el 4 % en el tercio medio. Considerando como referencia la línea biestiloidea, las CIT en el segundo EIMC presentaron un promedio de ancho de 8,16 ± 1,94 mm y una longitud total promedio de 13,71 ± 4,70 mm. En el tercer EIMC, un promedio de 10,94 ± 4,39 mm para el ancho y 6,29 ± 3,26 mm de longitud total promedio. En el cuarto EIMC el promedio de ancho fue de 7,00 ± 3,06 mm y la longitud total promedio 7,08 ± 4,42 mm. Estos hallazgos aportan datos respecto de la biometría y localización de las CIT, lo que resulta de utilidad en procedimientos de reparación quirúrgica del dorso de la mano humana.


SUMMARY: Intertendinous connections (IC) are narrow connective tissue bands extending between the extensor digitorum (ED) tendons. These bands are located superficially on the dorsum of the second, third and fourth intermetacarpal (IMC) space, presenting important functions such as collaborating in the stabilization of the metacarpophalangeal joint (MCP) and allowing the redistribution of extensor forces on this joint. The objective of the present study was to establish the biometric characteristics of IC. To do this, 24 formalized upper limbs are used, belonging to the Anatomy laboratory of the Universidad Andrés Bello, Viña del Mar, Chile. Lateral and medial insertion lengths, width and total length of each IC were recorded. Following two criteria, IC were classified according to morphology and were also located according to thirds of the back of the hand. 69 IC were found, 39% presented a transverse arrangement and 61 % an oblique arrangement. In relation to the morphological classification of IC, 29 % of type 1 were identified, 39 % of type 2. In the case of type 3, 20 % presented the form "r" and 12 % the form "y". Regarding its location, it was established that in the second IMC space, 18 % of the IC were located in the distal third of the back and 82 % in the middle third. In the third IMC space, 96 % of the IC was located in the distal third and 4 % in the middle third. In the fourth IMC space, 96 % were located in the distal third and 4 % in the middle third. Considering the biestiloid line as a reference, the IC in the second IMC space considers an average width of 8.16 + 1.94 mm and an average total length of 13.71 + 4.70 mm. In the third IMC space, an average of 10.94 + 4.39 mm for the width and 6.29 + 3.26 mm of average total length. In the fourth IMC space the average total width of 7.00 + 3.06 mm and the average total length of 7.08 + 4.42 mm. These findings provide data regarding the biometrics and location of IC, which is useful in surgical repair procedures on the back of the human hand.

ABSTRACT

RESUMEN: El nervio occipital mayor (NOM) se forma del ramo dorsal del nervio espinal C2 y asciende entre la musculatura cervical posterior para inervar la piel del cuero cabelludo. Diversos autores han descrito su recorrido, sin embargo, es escasa la información referente a la relación que presenta este nervio con el músculo oblicuo inferior de la cabeza (OIC) y su trayecto intramuscular. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar el recorrido y relaciones que el NOM estableció en el intervalo existente entre los músculos OIC y músculo trapecio (T). Para ello, se midieron las distancias verticales y horizontales a la altura de la protuberancia occipital externa y línea mediana, y se dividió al músculo OIC en tercios para observar variaciones del recorrido de este nervio. Junto con medir el diámetro del NOM, se midieron las distancias vertical y horizontal de este nervio a través de cinco puntos de referencia muscular y un punto de referencia vascular. Estos puntos musculares fueron: a) sobre el vientre del músculo OIC (punto 1); b) en la cara profunda del músculo semiespinoso de la cabeza (SEC) (punto 2); c) en la cara superficial del músculo SEC (punto 3); d) en la cara profunda del músculo T (punto 4); y e) en la cara superficial del músculo T (punto 5). A este se sumó el punto 6, en el cual se establecieron las distancias vertical y horizontal con la arteria occipital a la altura de la cara superficial del músculo T. Para ello se disecaron 18 cabezas (36 triángulos suboccipitales) de cadáveres adultos brasileños pertenecientes al laboratorio de Anatomía de la Universidade Federal de Alagoas (UFAL), Maceió, Brasil. Las distancias verticales y horizontales obtenidas respecto de los seis puntos fueron: 63,67 y 27,15 mm (punto 1); 53,89 y 21,44 mm (punto 2); 30,61 y 14,49 mm (punto 3); 20,39 y 22,8 mm (punto 4); 5,86 y 33,46 mm (punto 5); 5,99 y 35,56 mm (punto 6), respectivamente. En relación al músculo OIC, el NOM se ubicó en un 72,22 % de las muestras en el tercio medio de este músculo, 19,44% en su tercio lateral y un 8,33 % en su tercio medial. Todos estos hallazgos deben ser considerados al momento de diagnosticar correctamente posibles atrapamientos del NOM en la región cervical profunda, siendo además, una contribución para el éxito de procedimientos quirúrgicos de esta región.


SUMMARY: The great occipital nerve (GON) is formed from the dorsal branch of the C2 spinal nerve and ascends between the posterior cervical musculature to innervate the skin of the scalp. Various authors have described its course, however, there is little information regarding the relationship that this nerve presents with the obliquus capitis inferior (OCI) and its intramuscular path. The objective of this study was to determine the route and relationships that the GON established in the interval between the OCI muscles and the trapezius muscle (T). For this, the vertical and horizontal distances were measured at the height of the external occipital protuberance and median line, and the OCI muscle was divided into thirds to observe variations in the path of this nerve. Along with measuring the diameter of the GON, the vertical and horizontal distances of this nerve were measured through five muscle reference points and one vascular reference point. These muscle points were: a) on the belly of the OCI muscle (point 1); b) in the deep face of the semispinalis capitis muscle (SCM) (point 2); c) on the surface of the SCM (point 3); d) on the deep face of the T (point 4); and e) on the surface face of the T (point 5). To this was added point 6, in which the vertical and horizontal distances were established with the occipital artery at the height of the superficial face of the T. For this, 18 heads (36 suboccipital triangles) of Brazilian adult corpses belonging to the Anatomy laboratory of the Universidade Federal de Alagoas (UFAL), Maceió, Brazil, were dissected. The vertical and horizontal distances obtained with respect to the six points were: 63.67 and 27.15 mm (point 1); 53.89 and 21.44 mm (point 2); 30.61 and 14.49 mm (point 3); 20.39 and 22.8 mm (point 4); 5.86 and 33.46 mm (point 5); 5.99 and 35.56 mm (point 6), respectively. In relation to the OCI, the GON was located in 72.22 % of the samples in the middle third of this muscle, 19.44 % in its lateral third and 8.33 % in its medial third. All these findings should be considered when correctly diagnosing possible entrapments of GON in the deep cervical region, being a contribution to the success of surgical procedures in this region.

ABSTRACT

Los músculos lumbricales (ML) de la mano humana son claves en la propiocepción de la flexoextensión de los dedos. La descripción de su inervación indica que el nervio mediano (NM) inerva los dos ML laterales (L1 y L2) y el nervio ulnar (NU) los ML mediales (L3 y L4). Diversos autores han reportado una gran variabilidad de esta inervación, tanto en los nervios que entregan ramos para estos músculos, como también en la distribución de sus ramos y la presencia de troncos comunes. Por otra parte, el número de ramos que recibe cada ML y los puntos motores (Pm) de los mismos ha sido escasamente reportado. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar número, ubicación y Pm de los ramos destinados a los ML de la mano humana. Así mismo se estableció el patrón de inervación más frecuente. Para ello se utilizaron 24 manos formalizadas, pertenecientes al laboratorio de Anatomía, de la Universidad Andrés Bello, sede Viña del Mar, Chile. Se realizó una disección convencional por planos de profundidad. En todos los casos, el ramo del músculo L1 se originó del nervio digital palmar propio lateral del dedo índice, de la misma forma, en el 100 % el L2 fue inervado por un ramo del nervio digital palmar común del segundo espacio interóseo. En relación a los ML mediales en un 100 % ambos músculos fueron inervados por ramos del ramo profundo del NU (RPNM). En el caso del L3 en un 92 % se presentó un tronco común con el segundo músculo interóseo palmar, asimismo para L4 existió un tronco común con el tercer músculo interóseo palmar en un 79 %. En el 29 %, el L3 presentó una inervación dual. Considerando como referencia la línea biestiloidea, los Pm de los ramos del NM fue de 63,96 mm para L1; 67,91 mm para L2 y 68,69 mm para L3. Para los ramos provenientes del RPNU fue de 69,87 mm para L3 y 69, 21 mm para L4. Los resultados obtenidos aportan al conocimiento anatómico de la inervación de los músculos lumbricales y es de utilidad en procedimientos de neurocirugía que busquen la restauración de la funcionalidad de la mano.


The lumbrical muscles (LM) of the human hand are key in proprioception of flexion and finger extension. The description of its innervation indicates that the median nerve (MN) innervates the two lateral LMs (L1 and L2) and the ulnar nerve (UN) the medial LMs (L3 and L4). Various authors have reported a great variability of this innervation, both in which nerve delivers branches for these muscles, as well as in the distribution of their branches and the presence of common trunks. On the other hand, the number of branches that each LM receives and the motor points (Mp) of these have been scarcely reported. The aim of this study was to determine the number, location and Mp of the branches destined for the LM of the human hand. Likewise, the most frequent innervation pattern was established. For this, 24 formalized hands, belonging to the anatomy laboratory, of the Universidad Andrés Bello, Viña del Mar, Chile, were used. Conventional depth plane dissection was performed. In all cases, the branch of the L1 muscle originated from the palmar digital nerve proper to the index finger, in the same way, in 100 % the L2 was supplied with a branch of the common palmar digital nerve from the second interosseous space. In relation to the LM, in 100 % both muscles were innervated by branches of the deep branch of the UN (DBUN). In the case of L3, 92 % presented a common trunk with the second palmar interosseous muscle. Likewise, in 79 % of the cases, there was a common trunk between the L4 and the third palmar interosseous muscle. In 29 %, the L3 presented a dual innervation. The distance between of the Mp-BEstL was 63.96 mm for L1, 67.91 mm for L2 and 68.69 mm for L3. This distance was 69.87 mm for L3 and 69, 21 mm for L4. The results obtained contribute to the anatomical knowledge of the innervation of the lumbrical muscles and is useful in neurosurgery procedures that seek to restore the functionality of the hand.
