ABSTRACT

Mixed pancreatic epithelial and mesenchymal tumors are rare, usually invasive, entities. Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) is a precursor of invasive ductal carcinoma and shares mutations with its invasive counterparts. We report the case of a 72-year-old female with a previously undescribed sarcomatous transformation of a residual IPMN with no evidence of an invasive component. The mesenchymal component showed no heterologous differentiation. Both the epithelial and the mesenchymal populations showed aberrant expression of p53 protein and the same point mutation in KRAS gene. After a 6 month follow up, there were no signs of local or distant relapse. The present case suggests that sarcomatous transformation is possible in non-invasive, intraductal pancreatic lesions.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic caused professional upgrading to acquire new shades. Universities encouraged the use of information and communication technologies, as well as learning in virtual settings. Objective: To present criteria on the virtualization of professional upgrading for the improvement of pedagogical performance during COVID-19. Author's stance: The situation caused by COVID-19 demanded to carry out the teaching-learning process in virtual settings; therefore, the professors from the social sciences area took up this challenge without previous preparation. The professional upgrading process carried out in the virtual classroom proved to be an effective way for the application of virtual educational resources. Conclusions: Professional upgrading during public health circumstances of emergency was carried out in the virtual classroom of the Latin American School of Medicine, where pedagogical performance could be improved among the professors from the social sciences area(AU)

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Macrophages containing exogenous pigments are commonly encountered in cytological specimens. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of tumor tattooing as an infrequent exogenous source of peritoneal fluid macrophagic pigment in a 76-year-old female. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Tattooing-derived ink can be a source of macrophagic pigment and should not be confused with other endogenous or exogenous pigments. The anatomical location and past medical history of the patient can aid in the diagnosis.
