ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study compares the biofilm inhibition effects of denture cleaning tablets, carvacrol, and their combined use against Candida albicans on denture bases produced with different techniques. Additionally, the surface roughness and contact angles of these denture bases were evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Test samples were prepared from four different denture base materials (cold-polymerized, heat-polymerized, CAD/CAM milling, and 3D-printed). The surface roughness and contact angles of the test samples were measured using a profilometer and goniometer, respectively. For the evaluation of biofilm inhibition, samples were divided into 5 subgroups: Corega and carvacrol, separately and combined treatments, positive (inoculated with C. albicans) and negative control (non-inoculated with C. albicans, only medium). Biofilm mass was determined using the crystal violet method. An additional prepared test sample for each subgroup was examined under scanning electron microscopy (SEM). RESULTS: The surface roughness values of the 3D-printed test samples were found to be statistically higher than the other groups (P < .001). The water contact angle of all test materials was not statistically different from each other (P > .001). Corega and carvacrol, separately and combined, significantly decreased the amount of biofilm on all surfaces (P < .0001). Treatment of corega alone and in combination with carvacrol to the 3D-printed material caused less C. albicans inhibition than the other groups (P < .001; P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: The surface roughness values of all test groups were within the clinically acceptable threshold. Although Corega and carvacrol inhibited C. albicans biofilms, their combined use did not show a synergistic effect. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Carvacrol may be used as one of the disinfectant agents for denture cleaning due to its biofilm inhibition property.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the shear bond strength (SBS) of repair material to conventionally, subtractive-, and additive-manufactured denture bases after different surface treatments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Disk-shaped test specimens (N = 300) were prepared from denture base materials produced by one conventional (Procryla), one subtractive (Yamahachi), and one additive (Curo Denture) method. The test specimens were randomly divided into five groups (n = 10) and exposed to a variety of surface treatments-Group A: no surface treatment; Group B: grinding with silicon carbide paper; Group C: sandblasting; Group D: erbium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser; and Group E: plasma. Repair was performed with autopolymerizing acrylic resin (Meliodent). Surface roughness analyses were performed with a profilometer. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine one specimen from each subgroup. SBS was evaluated on a universal testing machine. Failure types were observed under a stereomicroscope. RESULTS: Surface roughness values were significantly higher in all test materials in Group D than in the other groups (p < 0.001). For conventional resin, the SBS values were higher in Group C than in Groups A, D, and E (p < 0.001). For CAD/CAM material, Groups B and C had significantly greater SBS increases compared with Group E (p < 0.001). For 3D material, Group D showed higher SBS than all groups except Group C (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: For SBS, sandblasting was most effective in the conventional group, whereas laser treatment was the most effective in the additive-manufactured group. For the subtractive group, surface treatments other than plasma exhibited similar SBS. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: In repairing fractured prostheses, any degree of roughening suitable for the material content may provide an SBS benefit.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the surface roughness and contact angle of composite resins produced by CAD/CAM milling and three-dimensional (3D) printing for permanent restorations as well as the adhesion of S. mutans and S. sanguinis bacteria to these composites. Three CAD/CAM milling composite resins (Vita Enamic-VE, Cerasmart-CE, Lava Ultimate-LU) and three 3D printing resins (Varseo Smile Crown plus-VSC, Saremco print Crowntech-SPC, Formlabs 3B Permanent crown-FLP) were selected. Twenty samples were prepared for each group. Using a contact profilometer, the surface roughness was determined, and an optical goniometer was used to quantify the contact angle. To evaluate the bacterial adhesion, composite specimens were immersed in mucin containing artificial saliva. All samples were incubated for 24 h at 37°C in 5% CO2. CFUs were determined by counting colonies after the incubation period. Surface roughness values of test samples were the highest in the Group VSC [0.46 (0.14) µm], whereas the lowest values were found in the Group LU [0.23 (0.05) µm]. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in contact angle values (p > 0.05). The S. mutans adhesion extent on the Group SPC was statistically higher compared to all other materials with p < 0.05. For S. sanguinis, the lowest bacterial adhesion value was recorded in Group CE (3.00 × 104 CFU/ml) and statistically significant differences were found with Group VE and VSC (p < 0.05). Different digital manufacturing techniques and material compositions can affect the surface roughnesses of composite resins. All composite resin samples have hydrophobic characteristics. Microbial adhesion of the tested composite resins may be varied depending on the bacterial species. S. mutans showed much more adhesion to these materials than S. sanguinis.

ABSTRACT

There is limited information on the repairability of prostheses produced with digital technology. This study aims to evaluate various surface treatments on flexural bond strength of repaired dentured base resins produced by digital and conventional methods. A total of 360 samples were prepared from one heat-polymerized, one CAD/CAM milled and one 3D printed denture base materials. All of the test samples were subjected to thermocycling (5-55 °C, 5000 cycles) before and after repair with auto-polymerizing acrylic resin. The test samples were divided into five subgroups according to the surface treatment: grinding with silicon carbide (SC), sandblasting with Al2O3 (SB), Er:YAG laser (L), plasma (P) and negative control (NC) group (no treatment). In addition, the positive control (PC) group consisted of intact samples for the flexural strength test. Surface roughness measurements were performed with a profilometer. After repairing the test samples, a universal test device determined the flexural strength values. Both the surface topography and the fractured surfaces of samples were examined by SEM analysis. The elemental composition of the tested samples was analyzed by EDS. Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests were performed for statistical analysis of data. SB and L surface treatments statistically significantly increased the surface roughness values of all three materials compared to NC subgroups (p < 0.001). The flexural strength values of the PC groups in all three test materials were significantly higher than those of the other groups (p < 0.001). The repair flexural strength values were statistically different between the SC-SB, L-SB, and NC-SB subgroups for the CAD/CAM groups, and the L-SC and L-NC subgroups for the 3D groups (p < 0.001). The surface treatments applied to the CAD/CAM and heat-polymerized groups did not result in a statistically significant difference in the repair flexural strength values compared to the NC groups (p > 0.05). Laser surface treatment has been the most powerful repair method for 3D printing technique. Surface treatments led to similar repair flexural strengths to untreated groups for CAD/CAM milled and heat-polymerized test samples.

OBJECTIVES: This study is aimed to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Cancer Stigma Scale for the Turkish population (CASS-T). METHODS: The sample of the study consisted of 412 students of a foundation university located in Ankara, Turkey. The reliability of the CASS was evaluated using the Cronbach alpha reliability coefficient and item-total score correlations. Exploratory factor analyses were applied to examine the factor structure of the scale and its construct validity. To test the time invariance of the scale, the relationships between the scores obtained from the first and second applications were examined using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). RESULTS: The Cronbach's alpha coefficient of CASS-T was 0.83. In the factor analysis, it was confirmed that the scale has a six-dimensional structure in parallel to original version, namely Avoidance, Severity, Responsibility, Policy opposition, Awkwardness, and Discrimination. The ICC values all remained in the range that indicates the reliability of the 0.63-0.71 to be substantial. The contribution of the six factors of the CASS-T scale to the variance is 57.8. SIGNIFICANCE IN RESULTS: The Turkish version of the CASS was confirmed to have good reliability and validity for evaluating stigma toward cancer in Turkish society.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Pistacia is a genus of dioecious plant species whose trees can take 4-5 years to reach the economically valuable fruit-bearing stage. The fruits have great importance as raw material in the food, healthcare, and baking industries. For that reason, the identification of individual plants in the early juvenile period for the pollination and positioning of trees is crucial for growers. The objective of this study is to develop markers for each Pistacia species that can help in screening the sex of plant seedlings before they reach the reproductive stage, without waiting for morphological characteristics to appear. METHODS AND RESULTS: Within this context, by using the power of the kompetitive allele-specific PCR (KASP) assay technology as a marker screening system, we successfully discriminated seven out of eight Pistacia species: P. atlantica, P. integerrima, P. khinjuk, P. mutica, P. terebinthus, P. vera, and P. lentiscus. We used a high-throughput DNA sequence read archive (SRA) to assemble a reference genome that was employed in our studies as a de novo bioinformatics method. Four genomic regions from SRA and three single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) positions from Kafkas et al. BMC Genomics 16:98, 2015) were selected and sequenced with collected plant material from predominantly the Antepfistigi Research Institute Collection Garden, and eight species were aligned intraspecifically for SNP mining. In total, 12 SNP markers were converted to KASP markers, and 5 of them (SNP-PIS-133396, SNP-PIS-167992, P-ATL-91951-565, P-INT-91951-256, P-KHI-91951-115) showed clear allelic discrimination between male and female plants. SNP-PIS-167992 and P-ATL-91951-565 were identified as the best marker assays because they showed allelic frequency differences for all individuals and for both homozygous and heterozygous characters. These markers could be the most comprehensive ones for the whole genus because they showed discriminative power for several species. CONCLUSIONS: This study is the first one to use the KASP assay for sex discrimination in Pistacia species, and it can be regarded as a precursor study for sex discrimination by KASP for plants in general.

ABSTRACT

Progress in understanding borderline personality disorder has unfolded in the last decade, landing in a new COVID-19-influenced world. Borderline personality disorder is now firmly established as a valid diagnosis, distinct from its co-occurring mood, anxiety, trauma-related, and behavioral disorders. Further, it is also understood as a reflection of general personality dysfunction, capturing essential features shared among all personality disorders. Neuroimaging research, representing the vast neurobiological advances made in the last decade, illustrates that the disorder shares frontolimbic dysfunction with many psychiatric diagnoses but has a distinct signature of interpersonal and emotional hypersensitivity. This signature is the conceptual basis of the psychotherapies and clinical management approaches proven effective for the disorder. Medications remain adjunctive and are contraindicated by some guidelines internationally. Less invasive brain-based therapeutics show promise. The most significant change in the treatment landscape is a focus on briefer, less intensive formats of generalist management. Shorter variants of therapies, such as dialectical behavior therapy and mentalization-based treatment, are in the process of being shown to be adequately effective. Earlier intervention and greater emphasis on functional improvement are needed to more effectively curb the disabilities and risks of borderline personality disorder for patients and their families. Remote interventions show promise in broadening access to care.

ABSTRACT

Most measures of psychotherapy outcome focus on symptomatic change. However, clients often report other changes through therapy, such as increased self-acceptance. This study reports on the development and validation of the Complementary Measure of Psychotherapy Outcome (COMPO) that assesses different areas of psychological functioning deemed important by clients and therapists. Items were written based on a literature review of client-reported change and feedback from experienced therapists. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted on the initial 42-item COMPO administered to 264 psychotherapy clients. Iterative item reduction resulted in the final 12-item, four-factor solution, with factors named self-acceptance, self-knowledge, relationship quality, and consideration of others. This factor structure, along with a bifactor model that contains a general factor and the four domain-specific factors, was replicated on a sample of 571 adults in the community. The 12-item COMPO exhibits convergent validity with measures of self-esteem, insight, social support, and empathy; demonstrates 2-week test-retest reliability; and predicts life satisfaction. The 12-item COMPO was further administered to 28 clients in short-term psychodynamic therapy for depression. Except for consideration of others, COMPO subscales and total scale scores improved from pre- to posttherapy. Posttherapy COMPO scores were also higher among clients who experienced clinically significant change compared to those who did not. The COMPO was negatively associated with depressive symptoms and impairments in functioning across the three samples. The brevity of the COMPO makes it a convenient tool to supplement symptom-based measures for a more comprehensive assessment of outcome in psychotherapy. ABSTRACT

Personality disorders (PD) carry high psychosocial dysfunction and are associated with treatment resistance in nonspecialized care. Psychodynamic therapies (PDT) are often used to treat PDs, but there has never been a systematic meta-analysis of PDT trials for PD. To evaluate the evidence base for PDTs for PDs across multiple outcome domain, a systematic search for PDT for PD trials was conducted through PubMed and PsycINFO. Sixteen trials were identified, comprising 19 dynamic, 8 active, and 9 control groups predominantly reflecting treatment of borderline and mixed Cluster C PDs, and a random effects meta-analysis was undertaken. PDTs were superior to controls in improving core PD symptoms (g = -0.63; 95% confidence interval [CI; -0.87, -0.41]), suicidality (g = -0.79, p = .02; 95% CI [-1.38, -0.20]), general psychiatric symptoms (g = -0.47; 95% CI [-0.69, -0.25]), and functioning (g = -0.66; 95% CI [-1.01, -0.32]), but not for interpersonal problems due to heterogeneity (g = -1.25; 95% CI [-3.22, 0.71]). Outcomes for PDTs were not different from other active treatments in core PD (g = 0.05; 95% CI [-0.25, 0.35]) or other symptoms. This pattern continued into posttreatment follow-up (average 14 months). Study quality was generally rated as adequate and was unrelated to outcomes. Compared with other treatments, PDTs do not have different acute effects and are superior to controls, although only trials treating BPD employed active controls and non-BPD trials were of lower quality. Underresearched areas include narcissistic PD, specific Cluster C disorders, and personality pathology as a continuous construct. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved).

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Caries-detector dyes (CDDs) have proven useful in the identification and removal of carious dentin. However, residues of these cleaning agents may remain in the oral cavity. This study conducted spectrophotomectric analyses to evaluate the effectiveness of different cleaning agents in removing residual CDDs from the oral cavity. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Ninety freshly extracted human third-molar teeth were used in the study. Tooth occlusal surfaces were ground to expose dentin. Specimens were randomly distributed into 3 groups according to CDD [Seek Caries Indicator (SCI), Caries Detector (CD), Caries Marker (CM)], and each group was further divided into 3 sub-groups according to cleaning solution [distilled water (DW), 3% NaOCl, and 3% H2 O2 )]. CDDs were applied to dentin surfaces according to the manufacturer's instructions and then rinsed with a cleansing solution. The effectiveness of cleaning solutions in removing CDD residues was determined according to color change by comparing spectrophotometric measurements of tooth color before CDD application and after cleaning. Data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's HSD test (α = 0.05). RESULT: For all CDDs groups, the smallest color differences were observed in the 3% NaOCl sub-groups (P < .05), and the largest in the distilled water sub-groups (P > .05). When compared to the other CDD groups, the SCI group yielded the greatest color differences for all cleaning-agent sub-groups. CONCLUSION: Cleaning solutions such as 3% NaOCl or 3% H2 O2 can be used to remove residual CDD from dentin surfaces. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This study compared the effectiveness of three different cleaning agents in caries removal process.
