ABSTRACT

Sulfurous thermal waters (STWs) are used as a complementary treatment for allergic rhinitis. However, there is scant data on the effects of STW on nasal epithelial cells, and in vitro models are warranted. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the dose and time effects of exposure to 3D nasal inserts (MucilAirTM-HF allergic rhinitis model) with STW or isotonic sodium chloride solution (ISCS) aerosols. Transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) and histology were assessed before and after nebulizations. Chemokine/cytokine levels in the basal supernatants were assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The results showed that more than four daily nebulizations of four or more minutes compromised the normal epithelial integrity. In contrast, 1 or 2 min of STW or ISCS nebulizations had no toxic effect up to 3 days. No statistically significant changes in release of inflammatory chemokines MCP-1/CCL2 > IL-8/CXCL8 > MIP-1α/CCL3, no meaningful release of "alarmins" (IL-1α, IL-33), nor of anti-inflammatory IL-10 cytokine were observed. We have characterized safe time and dose conditions for aerosol nebulizations using a novel in vitro 3D nasal epithelium model of allergic rhinitis patients. This may be a suitable in vitro setup to mimic in vivo treatments of chronic rhinitis with STW upon triggering an inflammatory stimulus in the future.

ABSTRACT

A new species of Acanthoderini is described from Brazil: Penaherreraus birai sp. nov. New records: Susuacanga rotundipennis (Bates, 1884) (Cerambycinae Eburiini) is recorded from the Mexican state of Jalisco; Psyrassa xestioides (Bates, 1872) (Cerambycinae, Elaphidiini) from the Mexican state of Oaxaca; Anisopodus dispar Bates, 1885 from Nicaragua (Lamiinae, Acanthocinini); and Lasiolepturges zikani Melzer, 1928 from Brazil (Pará) (Lamiinae, Acanthocinini). Variations in Urgleptes navarretei Santos-Silva, Nascimento, Botero & McClarin, 2021 are reported. Charlesella is proposed as a replacement name for Pygmaeopsis Schaeffer, 1908 (Coleoptera, Cerambycidae, Lamiinae, Desmiphorini), preoccupied by Pygmaeopsis Warren, 1907 (Lepidoptera, Geometridae).

ABSTRACT

Three new species of Eupogonius LeConte, 1852 (Desmiphorini) are described from Mexico: E. rifkindi sp. nov., from Colima and E. martinezi sp. nov. and E. pulcher sp. nov., from Nayarit. A new country record is provided for Eupogonius piperitus (Bates, 1885) and new country (Belize) and state (Mexico, Oaxaca) records are provided for Drycothaea spreta Bates, 1885 (Calliini). The differences between D. spreta and D. turrialbae (Breuning, 1943) are discussed. Additional new distribution records are presented for Canidia ochreostictica (Dillon, 1956) and Stenolis multimacula Monné, 2011 (Acanthocinini). In a recent paper by us, the repository acronyms listed under materials and methods do not match the repository acronym listed for the new species, the type repository for those four new species is clarified herein.

ABSTRACT

Sexual dimorphism in Elaphidion scabricolle (Bates, 1872) (Cerambycidae, Cerambycinae, Elaphidiini) is reported and the inclusion of the species in this genus is questioned. Leptostylus bicolor sp. nov. (Cerambycidae, Lamiinae, Acanthocinini) is described from Panama. Leptostylus pygialis Bates, 1872 is redescribed based on a female with an elytral pubescent pattern different from that of the lectotype; the sex of the lectotype, originally reported as female is commented on. Notes are provided on Lophopoeum saronotum Bates, 1872 (Cerambycidae, Lamiinae, Acanthocinini). Distenia (Basisvallis) phaeocera Bates, 1880 (Disteniidae) is recorded from Panama and Drycothaea sallei Thomson, 1868 (Cerambycidae, Lamiinae, Calliini) is recorded from Mexico (Chiapas) and Honduras.

ABSTRACT

The status of the two specimens of Prioninae seen on Merian's plate 24 (1705) is discussed, and considered as being Mallodon spinibarbis (Linnaeus, 1758). ABSTRACT

Phrynidius Lacordaire, 1869, a genus of Mesoamerican distribution, is a group whose original taxonomic knowledge was generally limited, mainly due to the original descriptions not allowing for the adequate determination of its species. Recently, this knowledge was increased with the description of new species and the publication of a key to separate them. However, this knowledge is still incomplete, and there remain undescribed species deposited in different entomological collections. In this study, we update the taxonomic and distributional knowledge of the genus, and provide a new key to separate the species. Seven new species are described: P. poriferus sp. nov., from Honduras; P. skillmani sp. nov., from Guatemala; P. obrieni sp. nov., from Honduras; P. wibmeri sp. nov., from Mexico; P. pallifemoralis sp. nov., from Mexico; P. oaxacanensis sp. nov., from Mexico; P. guatemalensis sp. nov., from Guatemala. Phrynidius echinus Bates, 1880 is briefly redescribed and reported for the first time for the Guatemalan department of El Progreso. Phrynidius armatus Linsley, 1933 is excluded from the Nicaraguan fauna. Additionally, two new country records are reported: Phrynidius guifarroi Santos-Silva, Van Roie & Jocqu, 2021, from Guatemala; and P. nayaritensis Heffern, Nascimento & Santos-Silva, 2018, from Honduras.
