ABSTRACT

Overlap syndrome (OVS) is a distinct clinical entity that seems to result in potential cardiovascular consequences. We aimed to estimate the prevalence and risk factors for OVS in OSA patients and analyze clinical and PSG characteristics associated with OVS. In this cross-sectional study, 2616 patients evaluated for OSA underwent type-1 polysomnography (PSG). They were grouped as pure OSA (AHI > 15/h) and OVS patients. Demographics, PSG data, pulmonary function tests and arterial blood gases (ABGs) were compared between groups after adjustments for confounders. OSA was diagnosed in 2108 out of 2616 patients. Of those, 398 (19%) had OVS. Independent predictors of OVS were older age [OR: 5.386 (4.153-6.987)], current/former smoking [OR: 11.577 (7.232-18.532)], BMI [OR: 2.901 (2.082-4.044)] and ABG measurements [PaCO2 ≥ 45 OR: 4.648 (3.078-7.019), PO2 [OR: 0.934 (0.920-0.949)], HCO3- [OR: 1.196 (1.133-1.263), all p < 0.001]. OVS was also associated with prevalent hypertension [OR: 1.345 (1.030-1.758), p = 0.03] and cardiovascular disease [OR: 1.617 (1.229-2.126), p < 0.001], depressive symptoms [OR: 1.741 (1.230-2.465), p = 0.002] and nocturia [OR: 1.944 (1.378-2.742), p < 0.001], as well as with indices of OSA severity. Disturbances in sleep architecture were more prominent in OVS expressed by lower %N3 and REM% and higher arousal index. Our data suggest that OVS is prevalent among OSA patients, with distinct clinical and PSG characteristics. These characteristics could be utilized as predictive factors for early identification and further evaluation of these patients towards desirable patient-reported outcomes.

ABSTRACT

The topic of sleep-related breathing disorders is always evolving, and during the European Respiratory Society (ERS) International Congress 2023 in Milan, Italy, the latest research and clinical topics in respiratory medicine were presented. The most interesting issues included new diagnostic tools, such as cardiovascular parameters and artificial intelligence, pathophysiological traits of sleep disordered breathing from routine polysomnography or polygraphy signals, and new biomarkers and the diagnostic approach in patients with excessive daytime sleepiness. This article summarises the most relevant studies and topics presented at the ERS International Congress 2023. Each section has been written by early career members of ERS Assembly 4.

ABSTRACT

Despite vitamin B12's recognized importance for the nervous system, there is still a lack of research on the association between vitamin B12 and sleep, especially in primary care settings. We assessed vitamin B12 levels in adult primary healthcare users and investigated correlations with sleep quality, insomnia, and sleepiness. In this cross-sectional study, 512 consecutive participants were included. Information regarding anthropometrics, socio-demographics, and medical history was obtained. The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS), and Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were used to quantify excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), insomnia symptoms, and sleep quality, respectively. The median vitamin B12 was 342 (266, 446) pg/mL. After adjustments, vitamin B12 levels < 342 pg/mL showed significant associations with insomnia symptoms [OR (95% CI) 2.434 (1.331-4.452), p = 0.004], especially in elderly, non-obese, and female participants, with EDS only in obese participants [OR (95% CI) 3.996, (1.006-15.876), p = 0.039]. Nonetheless, there was no significant association between B12 levels and poor sleep quality (OR 1.416, 95% CI 0.678-2.958, p = 0.354). In conclusion, our results show that lower vitamin B12 was associated with insomnia symptoms and sleepiness in specific groups of participants. However, further research with objective measurements of sleep is crucial to assess the relationship between sleep and vitamin B12.

Aims: We analysed longitudinal blood pressure (BP) data from hypertensive obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) patients in the European Sleep Apnea Database cohort. The study investigated the interaction between positive airway pressure (PAP)-induced BP change and antihypertensive treatment (AHT). Methods and results: Hypertensive patients with AHT [monotherapy/dual therapy n = 1283/652, mean age 59.6 ± 10.7/60.6 ± 10.3 years, body mass index (BMI) 34.2 ± 6.5/34.8 ± 7.0 kg/m2, apnoea-hypopnoea index 46 ± 25/46 ± 24 n/h, proportion female 29/26%, respectively] started PAP treatment. Office BP at baseline and 2- to 36-month follow-up were assessed. The interaction between AHT drug classes and PAP on BP was quantified and the influences of age, gender, BMI, co-morbidities, BP at baseline, and study site were evaluated. Following PAP treatment (daily usage, 5.6 ± 1.6/5.7 ± 1.9 h/day), systolic BP was reduced by -3.9 ± 15.5/-2.8 ± 17.7 mmHg in mono/dual AHT and diastolic BP by -3.0 ± 9.8/-2.7 ± 10.8 mmHg, respectively, all P < 0.0001. Systolic and diastolic BP control was improved following PAP treatment (38/35% to 54/46% and 67/67% to 79/74%, mono/dual AHT, respectively). PAP treatment duration predicted a larger BP improvement in the monotherapy group. Intake of renin-angiotensin blockers [angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI)/angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB)] alone or in any AHT combination was associated with better BP control. The AHT-dependent BP improvement was independent of confounders. Conclusion: In this pan-European OSA patient cohort, BP control improved following initiation of PAP. Longer PAP treatment duration, was associated with a favourable effect on BP. Our study suggests that ACEI/ARB, alone or in combination with other drug classes, provides a particularly strong reduction of BP and better BP control when combined with PAP in OSA.

ABSTRACT

The aim of our study was to assess university students' sleep quality and fatigue before and during the academic exam period and identify potential associated factors. A Web-based survey was completed by 940 students of 20 different Tertiary Institutions including demographics, sleep habits, exercise, caffeine, tobacco, alcohol use, subjective sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index-PSQI), and fatigue (Fatigue severity scale-FSS) at the beginning of the semester and during the examination period. During the exam period, PSQI (8.9 vs. 6.1, p < 0.001) and FSS scores (36.9 vs. 32.7, p < 0.001) were significantly elevated compared to the pre-exam period. An increase in the PSQI score was associated with age (ß = 0.111, p = 0.011), presence of chronic disease (ß = 0.914, p = 0.006), and depressive symptoms (ß = 0.459, p = 0.001). An increase in the FSS score was associated with female gender (ß = 1.658, p < 0.001), age, (ß = 0.198, p = 0.010), increase in smoking (ß = 1.7, p = 0.029), coffee/energy drinks consumption (ß = 1.988, p < 0.001), decreased levels of physical exercise (ß = 1.660, p < 0.001), and depressive symptoms (ß = 2.526, p < 0.001). In conclusion, our findings indicate that exam periods have a negative impact on the sleep quality and fatigue levels of university students. Potential factors were identified that could contribute to the formulation of strategies for improved sleep quality and wellness.

ABSTRACT

The study's objective was to assess the impact of Mediterranean diet/lifestyle interventions for weight loss on positive airway pressure (PAP) adherence, body mass index (ΒΜΙ), sleepiness, and blood pressure measurements (BP) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). We designed a randomized, controlled trial, including overweight and obese patients with moderate to severe OSA, randomized to standard care (SCG, n = 37) or a Mediterranean diet group (MDG, n = 37). The SCG received healthy lifestyle advice, while the MDG underwent a 6-month behavioral intervention aiming to enhance weight loss and adherence to a Mediterranean diet. PAP adherence, BMI, Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), and BP measurements were evaluated pre- and post-intervention. Post-intervention PAP use was higher in the MDG compared to the SCG (6.1 vs. 5.4, p = 0.02). Diet/lifestyle intervention was one of the most significant predictive factors for PAP adherence (OR = 5.458, 95% CI = 1.144-26.036, p = 0.03). The SCG demonstrated a rise in BMI, while the MDG displayed a decline (0.41 vs. -0.75, p = 0.02). The MDG also demonstrated a substantial reduction in adjusted SBP (-5.5 vs. 2.8, p = 0.014) and DBP (-4.0 vs. 2.5, p = 0.01). Ultimately, incorporating a dietary/lifestyle intervention with standard care yields superior PAP adherence, BMI, and BP measurements in contrast to standard care alone, emphasizing the advantages of dedicating more time and support within the MDG.

ABSTRACT

Aim: The impact of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA)-COPD overlap syndrome (OVS) on sleep quality and cardiovascular outcomes has not been fully explored. We aimed to compare clinical and polysomnographic characteristics of patients with OVS versus patients with OSA, and to explore pathophysiological links between OVS and comorbidities. Study design and methods: This cross-sectional analysis initially included data from 5600 patients with OSA and lung function in the European Sleep Apnoea Database. Two subgroups of patients with OSA (n=1018) or OVS (n=509) were matched (2:1) based on sex, age, body mass index and apnoea-hypopnea index at baseline. Results: After matching, patients with OVS had more severe hypoxia, lower sleep efficiency and presented with higher prevalences of arterial hypertension, ischaemic heart disease and heart failure compared with patients with OSA. OVS was associated with a significant decrease in sleep efficiency (mean difference (ß) -3.0%, 95% CI -4.7 to -1.3) and in nocturnal mean peripheral oxyhaemoglobin saturation (SpO2) (ß -1.1%, 95% CI -1.5 to -0.7). Further analysis revealed that a decrease in forced expiratory volume in 1 s and arterial oxygen tension was related to a decrease in sleep efficiency and in mean nocturnal SpO2. A COPD diagnosis increased the odds of having heart failure by 1.75 (95% CI 1.15-2.67) and systemic hypertension by 1.36 (95% CI 1.07-1.73). Nocturnal hypoxia was strongly associated with comorbidities; the mean nocturnal SpO2 and T90 (increase in time below SpO2 of 90%) were associated with increased odds of systemic hypertension, diabetes and heart failure but the oxygen desaturation index was only related to hypertension and diabetes. Conclusion: Patients with OVS presented with more sleep-related hypoxia, a reduced sleep quality and a higher risk for heart failure and hypertension.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To analyze the impact of national lockdowns in Greece on positive airway pressure adherence, patients' perspectives regarding COVID-19 pandemic and the role of telemedicine. METHODS: 872 obstructive sleep apnea patients from southern and 673 from northern Greece, under positive airway pressure treatment, were evaluated with adherence data available 12 months prior to and 3 months after the first and second lockdown. Telemedicine, locally available as part of a research protocol, was used for patient's follow-up in southern Greece and standard follow-up procedures were implemented in northern Greece. We analyzed the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on positive airway pressure adherence and patients' concerns regarding COVID-19 infection. RESULTS: Significant difference was noted in positive airway pressure adherence as measured by the hours of use at 12 months prior to and at the 3 months after the first lockdown in southern (5.6 vs 6.6, P = .003) and northern Greece (5.3 vs 6.0, P = .03). The proportion of patients with optimal adherence (≥ 6 hours) increased by 18% (P = .004) in southern and by 9% (P = .20) in northern Greece after the first lockdown and remained steady after the second lockdown in both groups. In southern Greece, 23% of patients reported that they were concerned about getting COVID-19 due to obstructive sleep apnea diagnosis, while only 3% reported decreased sleep duration. Moreover, 9% were concerned that the presence of obstructive sleep apnea would make them more susceptible for worse outcome in case of COVID-19 infection. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that maintaining follow-up using telemedicine had a positive influence pointing out the potential role of digital health. ABSTRACT

During the European Respiratory Society (ERS) International Congress 2022 in Barcelona, Spain, the latest research and clinical topics in respiratory medicine were presented. The sleep medicine-focused presentations and symposia provided novel insights into the pathophysiology of sleep disordered breathing, its diagnostics, and new trends in translational research and clinical applications. The presented research trends focused mainly on the assessment of sleep disordered breathing-related intermittent hypoxia, inflammation and sleep fragmentation, and their implications, especially cardiovascular. The most promising methods for assessing these aspects encompass genomics, proteomics and cluster analysis. The currently available options include positive airway pressure and a combination of it and pharmacological agents (e.g. sulthiame). This article summarises the most relevant studies and topics on these subjects presented at the ERS International Congress 2022. Each section has been written by Early Career Members of the ERS Assembly 4.

ABSTRACT

Background: Patients with respiratory disorders often have additional diseases and are usually treated with more than one medication to manage their respiratory conditions as well as additional comorbidities. Thus, they are frequently exposed to polypharmacy (≥5 drugs), which raises the risk for drug-drug interactions (DDIs) and adverse drug reactions (ADRs). In this work, we present the results regarding the prevalence of DDIs in hospitalized patients with respiratory disorders in Greece. Methods: A 6-month descriptive single-center retrospective observational study enrolled 102 patients with acute or chronic respiratory disorders. Clinical characteristics and medication regimens were recorded upon admission, hospitalization, and discharge. The prevalence of DDIs and their clinical significance was recorded and analyzed. Results: Unspecified acute lower respiratory tract infection (25%), exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (12%) and pneumonia (8%) were the most frequent reasons for admission. Cardiovascular disorders (46%), co-existing respiratory disorders (32%), and diabetes (25%) were the most prevalent comorbidities. Polypharmacy was noted in 61% of patients upon admission, 98% during hospitalization, and 63% upon discharge. Associated DDIs were estimated to be 55% upon admission, 96% throughout hospitalization, and 63% on discharge. Pharmacodynamic (PD) DDIs were the most prevalent cases (81%) and referred mostly to potential risk for QT-prolongation (31.4% of PD-DDIs) or modulation of coagulation process as expressed through the international normalized ratio (INR) (29.0% of DDIs). Pharmacokinetic (PK) DDIs (19% of DDIs) were due to inhibition of Cytochrome P450 mediated metabolism that could lead to elevated systemic drug concentrations. Clinically significant DDIs characterized as "serious-use alternative" related to 7% of cases while 59% of DDIs referred to combinations that could be characterized as "use with caution-monitor". Clinically significant DDIs mostly referred to medication regimens upon admission and discharge and were associated with outpatient prescriptions. Conclusions: Hospitalized patients with respiratory disorders often experience multimorbidity and polypharmacy that raise the risk of DDIs. Clinicians should be conscious especially if any occurring arrhythmias, INR modulations, and prolonged or increased drug action is associated with DDIs.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Blood bicarbonate concentration plays an important role for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients to maintain acid-base balance. We investigated the association between arterial standard bicarbonate ([HCO3-]) and nocturnal hypoxia as well as comorbid hypertension in OSA. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of 3329 patients in the European Sleep Apnea Database (ESADA) was performed. Arterial blood gas analysis and lung function test were performed in conjunction with polysomnographic sleep studies. The 4% oxygen desaturation index (ODI), mean and minimum oxygen saturation (SpO2), and percentage of time with SpO2 below 90% (T90%) were used to reflect nocturnal hypoxic burden. Arterial hypertension was defined as a physician diagnosis of hypertension with ongoing antihypertensive medication. Hypertensive patients with SBP/DBP below or above 140/90 mmHg were classified as controlled-, uncontrolled hypertension, respectively. RESULTS: The [HCO3-] level was normal in most patients (average 24.0 ± 2.5 mmol/L). ODI, T90% increased whereas mean and minimum SpO2 decreased across [HCO3-] tertiles (ANOVA, p = 0.030, <0.001, <0.001, and <0.001, respectively). [HCO3-] was independently associated with ODI, mean SpO2, minimum SpO2, and T90% after adjusting for confounders (ß value [95%CI]: 1.21 [0.88-1.54], -0.16 [-0.20 to -0.11], -0.51 [-0.64 to -0.37], 1.76 [1.48-2.04], respectively, all p < 0.001). 1 mmol/L elevation of [HCO3-] was associated with a 4% increased odds of uncontrolled hypertension (OR: 1.04 [1.01-1.08], p = 0.013). CONCLUSION: We first demonstrated an independent association between [HCO3-] and nocturnal hypoxic burden as well as uncontrolled hypertension in OSA patients. Bicarbonate levels as an adjunctive measure provide insight into the pathophysiology of hypertension in OSA.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), especially obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), is commonly associated with respiratory diseases, such as COPD, asthma and interstitial lung disease. AREAS COVERED: This narrative review aims to comprehensively synthesize the existing information on SDB in respiratory diseases, investigate the role of gender in this association, and highlight the importance of OSA management in improving sleep, quality of life, and disease prognosis in these specific patient populations. EXPERT OPINION: Research indicates a synergistic link between OSA and chronic respiratory diseases, which leads to greater morbidity and mortality compared to each disorder alone. Given the lack of an optimal OSA screening tool for these patients, a comprehensive patient approach and overnight diagnostic sleep study are imperative. Despite the limited evidence available, it seems that gender has an impact on the prevalence, severity, and susceptibility of this coexistence. Recognizing the role of gender in the coexistence of OSA and other respiratory diseases can enhance everyday medical practice and enable clinicians to adopt a more personalized approach toward optimal screening and diagnosis of these patients.

ABSTRACT

Background: The coexistence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been defined as overlap syndrome (OVS). Recently, a link between OSA, COPD and Vitamin D (Vit D) serum concentration was reported, however, evidence regarding Vit D status in patients with OVS is scarce. The aim of the present study was to evaluate Vit D serum levels and to explore the association of those levels with anthropometric, pulmonary function and sleep parameters in patients with OVS. Methods: Vit D serum levels were measured in patients diagnosed with OVS, as confirmed by overnight polysomnography and pulmonary function testing. Results: A total of 90 patients (79 males and 11 females) were included in the analysis. The patients were divided into three groups matched for age, gender, and BMI: the control group that included 30 patients (27 males and 3 females), the OSA group that included 30 patients (26 males and 4 females), and the OVS group that included 30 patients (26 males and 4 females). Patients with OVS exhibited decreased serum 25(OH)D levels compared with OSA patients and controls (14.5 vs. 18.6 vs. 21.6 ng/mL, p < 0.001). In the OVS group, multiple linear regression analysis identified AHI and FEV1, as predictors of serum 25(OH)D levels (p = 0.041 and p = 0.038, respectively). Conclusions: Lower Vit D levels have been observed in patients with OVS compared with OSA patients and non-apneic controls, indicating an increased risk of hypovitaminosis D in this population which might be associated with disease severity.

OBJECTIVE: In 2010, a questionnaire-based study on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) management in Europe identified differences regarding reimbursement, sleep specialist qualification, and titration procedures. Now, 10 years later, a follow-up study was conducted as part of the ESADA (European Sleep Apnea Database) network to explore the development of OSA management over time. METHODS: The 2010 questionnaire including questions on sleep diagnostic, reimbursement, treatment, and certification was updated with questions on telemedicine and distributed to European Sleep Centers to reflect European OSA management practice. RESULTS: 26 countries (36 sleep centers) participated, representing 20 ESADA and 6 non-ESADA countries. All 21 countries from the 2010 survey participated. In 2010, OSA diagnostic procedures were performed mainly by specialized physicians (86%), whereas now mainly by certified sleep specialists and specialized physicians (69%). Treatment and titration procedures are currently quite homogenous, with a strong trend towards more Autotitrating Positive Airway Pressure treatment (in hospital 73%, at home 62%). From 2010 to 2020, home sleep apnea testing use increased (76%-89%) and polysomnography as sole diagnostic procedure decreased (24%-12%). Availability of a sleep specialist qualification increased (52%-65%) as well as the number of certified polysomnography scorers (certified physicians: 36%-79%; certified technicians: 20%-62%). Telemedicine, not surveyed in 2010, is now in 2020 used in diagnostics (8%), treatment (50%), and follow-up (73%). CONCLUSION: In the past decade, formal qualification of sleep center personnel increased, OSA diagnostic and treatment procedures shifted towards a more automatic approach, and telemedicine became more prominent.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency varies across countries and few data exist in the adult population in Greece. OBJECTIVES: To assess vitamin D levels in unselected patients from primary care and to investigate possible correlations with clinical, seasonal, and quality-of-life parameters. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 389 consecutive patients were included. They were grouped according to vitamin D status as vitamin D deficient (<20 ng/mL) and vitamin D sufficient groups (≥20 ng/mL). Demographic, Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) scores were measured and compared between groups. RESULTS: Vitamin D deficiency (<20 ng/mL) was observed in 50.4% of the cohort. Female gender (76% vs 66%, P = 0.026), obesity (42% vs 26%, P = 0.005), and hypertension (55% vs 43%, P = 0.023) were higher in the vitamin D deficiency group compared with the group without deficiency. After multiparametric adjustments (for age, gender, obesity, comorbidities, and seasonality), hypertension (odds ratio [OR] = 2.338, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.257-4.349, P = 0.007), excessive daytime sleepiness (ESS >10; OR = 3.345, 95% CI = 1.124-9.948, P = 0.029), depressive symptoms (BDI >10; OR = 3.769, 95% CI = 0.984-14.443, P = 0.04), and fatigue (FSS >36; OR = 7.157, 95% CI = 0.855-59.877, P = 0.04) showed significant independent associations with vitamin D deficiency in specific subgroups of patients. CONCLUSION: A large proportion of patients in primary care had vitamin D deficiency, independently associated with hypertension, sleepiness, depressive symptoms, and fatigue. Further research is needed in order to determine the role of vitamin D in these patients.


Vitamin D, also known as the "sunshine vitamin," is an essential nutrient long known for its role in bone health. It is also thought to increase the risk of medical conditions such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. Over recent years, we are witnessing a high percentage of the population with vitamin D deficiency in most European countries; however, few data exist in the adult population in Greece. Based on these findings, we assessed vitamin D levels in patients from primary care and investigated possible correlations with clinical, seasonal, and quality-of-life parameters, including sleepiness, insomnia, and depressive symptoms and fatigue. We found a large proportion of patients in primary care to have vitamin D deficiency, which was associated with hypertension, sleepiness, depressive symptoms, and fatigue based on gender, age, and obesity status of patients. Therefore, vitamin D deficiency should be suspected in specific subgroup of patients. Nevertheless, further research is also needed in order to assess if vitamin D supplementation is likely to have a clinically relevant influence on hypertension and quality-of-life parameters.

ABSTRACT

While continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy has a strong evidence base for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), its impact on cardiovascular comorbidity remains unclear. This journal club reviews three recent randomised controlled trials aimed to evaluate the impact of CPAP therapy in secondary prevention of cerebrovascular and coronary heart disease (SAVE trial), comorbid coronary heart disease (RICCADSA trial) and in patients admitted with acute coronary syndrome (ISAACC trial). All three trials included patients with moderate-to-severe OSA and excluded patients with severe daytime sleepiness. When CPAP was compared with usual care, they all reported no difference in a similar primary composite end-point including death from cardiovascular disease, cardiac events, and strokes. These trials faced the same methodological challenges, including a low primary end-point incidence, the exclusion of sleepy patients, and a low CPAP adherence. Therefore, caution must be taken when broadening their results to the wider OSA population. Although randomised controlled trials provide a high level of evidence, they may not be sufficient to capture the diversity of OSA. Large-scale, real-world data may be able to provide a more rounded and generalisable picture of the effects of routine clinical use of CPAP on cardiovascular morbimortality.

ABSTRACT

In the past, there was limited research relating to the role of sleep in respiratory diseases. Physicians treating these patients tended to focus mainly on the daily disabling symptoms, overlooking the possible significant role of coexisting sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Nowadays, OSA has been recognised as an important, highly prevalent comorbidity for respiratory diseases such as COPD, asthma and interstitial lung diseases (ILDs). Overlap syndrome refers to the coexistence of chronic respiratory disease and OSA in the same patient. Although, in the past, overlap syndromes have been poorly studied, recent data underline that they result in increased morbidity and mortality compared with either underlying disorder alone. OSA and respiratory disease may be of different severity, and this, along with the existence of various clinical phenotypes, points to the necessity of an individualised therapeutic plan. Early recognition and OSA management could offer key benefits, such as improved sleep, quality of life and disease outcomes. Educational aims: Describe pathophysiological aspects of OSA in chronic respiratory diseases such as COPD, asthma and ILDs.Understand the bidirectional clinical importance when OSA coexists in chronic respiratory diseases.Review current knowledge of treatment strategies towards an individualised therapeutic plan resulting in patient-centric outcomes.
