ABSTRACT

The global decline of freshwater mussels and their crucial ecological services highlight the need to understand their phylogeny, phylogeography and patterns of genetic diversity to guide conservation efforts. Such knowledge is urgently needed for Unio crassus, a highly imperilled species originally widespread throughout Europe and southwest Asia. Recent studies have resurrected several species from synonymy based on mitochondrial data, revealing U. crassus to be a complex of cryptic species. To address long-standing taxonomic uncertainties hindering effective conservation, we integrate morphometric, phylogenetic, and phylogeographic analyses to examine species diversity within the U. crassus complex across its entire range. Phylogenetic analyses were performed using cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (815 specimens from 182 populations) and, for selected specimens, whole mitogenome sequences and Anchored Hybrid Enrichment (AHE) data on âˆ¼ 600 nuclear loci. Mito-nuclear discordance was detected, consistent with mitochondrial DNA gene flow between some species during the Pliocene and Pleistocene. Fossil-calibrated phylogenies based on AHE data support a Mediterranean origin for the U. crassus complex in the Early Miocene. The results of our integrative approach support 12 species in the group: the previously recognised Unio bruguierianus, Unio carneus, Unio crassus, Unio damascensis, Unio ionicus, Unio sesirmensis, and Unio tumidiformis, and the reinstatement of five nominal taxa: Unio desectusstat. rev., Unio gontieriistat. rev., Unio mardinensisstat. rev., Unio nanusstat. rev., and Unio vicariusstat. rev. Morphometric analyses of shell contours reveal important morphospace overlaps among these species, highlighting cryptic, but geographically structured, diversity. The distribution, taxonomy, phylogeography, and conservation of each species are succinctly described.

ABSTRACT

To evaluate the effect of calcium hydroxide (CH), sodium ascorbate (SA) and sodium thiosulfate (ST) filling the pulp chamber on color stability and longevity of teeth after internal bleaching. Crowns of bovine incisors were submitted to internal bleaching and divided into groups according the material used in the pulp chamber: Control, CH, SA, ST. Each group was divided into two subgroups according to the time to perform restorative procedures (7 or 15 days). Color measurement was performed with a spectrophotometer at nine periods. The darkening (ΔE) values were calculated. The Mann-Whitney test was used to statistically analyze the data (p ⟨ 0.05). After bleaching, ΔE values were higher than 3.5, showing that the procedure was effective. After 24 hours, no difference was observed between groups. After 7 days, SA showed higher ΔE than the control group (p ⟨ 0.05). CH and TS did not differ from the control group. In restorations performed after 7/15 days, SA group showed higher values of darkening after 1 and 4 months than the control group (p ⟨ 0.05). SA induced perceptible darkening after bleaching and should not be used to fill the pulp chamber. ST and CH show color stability and longevity after 12 months.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Lower blood levels of the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are correlated with worse cognitive functions, particularly among APOE ε4 carriers. Whether DHA supplementation in APOE ε4 carriers with limited DHA consumption and dementia risk factors can delay or slow down disease progression when started before the onset of clinical dementia is not known. METHODS: PreventE4 is a double-blind, single site, randomized, placebo-controlled trial in cognitively unimpaired individuals with limited omega-3 consumption and dementia risk factors (n=368). Its objectives are to determine (1) whether carrying the APOE ε4 allele is associated with lower delivery of DHA to the brain; and (2) whether high dose DHA supplementation affects brain imaging biomarkers of AD and cognitive function. RESULTS: 365 cognitively unimpaired individuals between 55 and 80 (mean age 66) were randomized to 2 grams of DHA per day or identically appearing placebo for a period of 2 years. Half the participants were asked to complete lumbar punctures at baseline and 6-month visits to obtain cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The primary trial outcome measure is the change in CSF DHA to arachidonic acid ratio after 6 months of the intervention (n=181). Secondary trial outcomes include the change in functional and structural connectivity using resting state functional MRI at 24 months (n=365). Exploratory outcomes include the change in Repeatable Battery of the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status at 24 months (n=365). CONCLUSIONS: Findings from PreventE4 will clarify the brain delivery of DHA in individuals carrying the APOE ε4 allele with implications for dementia prevention strategies. Trial was registered as NCT03613844.

INTRODUCTION: During "bowel management week," abdominal radiographs are used to monitor the amount and location of stool. A radiologist familiar with the treatment plan can provide an improved interpretation. The goal of this paper is to standardize the radiological reports during a bowel management week. METHODS: We saw 744 patients during bowel management week from May 2016 until March 2023. Diagnosis included: anorectal malformation (397), idiopathic constipation (180), Hirschsprung disease (89), and spina bifida (78). Laxatives were the treatment for 51% of patients, and 49% received enemas. Characteristic radiographs were selected for each treatment group for a proposed reading standardization. RESULTS: When the stool is visualized, it is crucial to report its location. Having a contrast enema helps with the correct interpretation of the colonic anatomy. It is also essential to always compare the amount of stool with the radiograph from the previous day to determine if there is an increase or decrease in stool. Examples of radiographs are shown to guide the use of the preferred proposed terminology. CONCLUSION: Providing information regarding which treatment modality the patient is receiving and stating that a patient is on a bowel management week treatment is crucial for the radiologist to provide adequate interpretation. The radiologist must be familiar with the treatment goals and purpose of the daily radiograph.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Periapical radiographs are oftentimes taken in series to display all teeth present in the oral cavity. Our aim was to automatically assemble such a series of periapical radiographs into an anatomically correct status using a multi-modal deep learning model. METHODS: 4,707 periapical images from 387 patients (on average, 12 images per patient) were used. Radiographs were labeled according to their field of view and the dataset split into a training, validation, and test set, stratified by patient. In addition to the radiograph the timestamp of image generation was extracted and abstracted as follows: A matrix, containing the normalized timestamps of all images of a patient was constructed, representing the order in which images were taken, providing temporal context information to the deep learning model. Using the image data together with the time sequence data a multi-modal deep learning model consisting of two residual convolutional neural networks (ResNet-152 for image data, ResNet-50 for time data) was trained. Additionally, two uni-modal models were trained on image data and time data, respectively. A custom scoring technique was used to measure model performance. RESULTS: Multi-modal deep learning outperformed both uni-modal image-based learning (p<0.001) and time-based learning (p<0.05). The multi-modal deep learning model predicted tooth labels with an F1-score, sensitivity and precision of 0.79, respectively, and an accuracy of 0.99. 37 out of 77 patient datasets were fully correctly assembled by multi-modal learning; in the remaining ones, usually only one image was incorrectly labeled. CONCLUSIONS: Multi-modal modeling allowed automated assembly of periapical radiographs and outperformed both uni-modal models. Dental machine learning models can benefit from additional data modalities. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Like humans, deep learning models may profit from multiple data sources for decision-making. We demonstrate how multi-modal learning can assist assembling periapical radiographs into an anatomically correct status. Multi-modal learning should be considered for more complex tasks, as clinically a wealth of data is usually available and could be leveraged.

ABSTRACT

Wetland area in agricultural landscapes has been heavily reduced to gain land for crop production, but in recent years there is increased societal recognition of the negative consequences from wetland loss on nutrient retention, biodiversity and a range of other benefits to humans. The current trend is therefore to re-establish wetlands, often with an aim to achieve the simultaneous delivery of multiple ecosystem services, i.e., multifunctionality. Here we review the literature on key objectives used to motivate wetland re-establishment in temperate agricultural landscapes (provision of flow regulation, nutrient retention, climate mitigation, biodiversity conservation and cultural ecosystem services), and their relationships to environmental properties, in order to identify potential for tradeoffs and synergies concerning the development of multifunctional wetlands. Through this process, we find that there is a need for a change in scale from a focus on single wetlands to wetlandscapes (multiple neighboring wetlands including their catchments and surrounding landscape features) if multiple societal and environmental goals are to be achieved. Finally, we discuss the key factors to be considered when planning for re-establishment of wetlands that can support achievement of a wide range of objectives at the landscape scale.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The onset of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is an essential outcome in Alzheimer's disease (AD) prevention trials and a compelling milestone for clinically meaningful change. Determining MCI, however, may be variable and subject to disagreement. Adjudication procedures may improve the reliability of these determinations. We report the performance of an adjudication committee for an AD prevention trial. METHODS: The TOMMORROW prevention trial selected cognitively normal participants at increased genetic risk for AD and randomized them to low-dose pioglitazone or placebo treatment. When adjudication criteria were triggered, a participant's clinical information was randomly assigned to a three-member panel of a six-member independent adjudication committee. Determination of whether or not a participant reached MCI due to AD or AD dementia proceeded through up to three review stages - independent review, collaborative review, and full committee review - requiring a unanimous decision and ratification by the chair. RESULTS: Of 3494 participants randomized, the committee adjudicated on 648 cases from 386 participants, resulting in 96 primary endpoint events. Most participants had cases that were adjudicated once (n = 235, 60.9%); the rest had cases that were adjudicated multiple times. Cases were evenly distributed among the eight possible three-member panels. Most adjudicated cases (485/648, 74.8%) were decided within the independent review (stage 1); 14.0% required broader collaborative review (stage 2), and 11.1% needed full committee discussion (stage 3). The primary endpoint event decision rate was 39/485 (8.0%) for stage 1, 29/91 (31.9%) for stage 2, and 28/72 (38.9%) for stage 3. Agreement between the primary event outcomes supported by investigators' clinical diagnoses and the decisions of the adjudication committee increased from 50% to approximately 93% (after around 100 cases) before settling at 80-90% for the remainder of the study. CONCLUSIONS: The adjudication process was designed to provide independent, consistent determinations of the trial endpoints. These outcomes demonstrated the extent of uncertainty among trial investigators and agreement between adjudicators when the transition to MCI due to AD was prospectively assessed. These methods may inform clinical endpoint determination in future AD secondary prevention studies. Reliable, accurate assessment of clinical events is critical for prevention trials and may mean the difference between success and failure.

ABSTRACT

Building performant and robust artificial intelligence (AI)-based applications for dentistry requires large and high-quality data sets, which usually reside in distributed data silos from multiple sources (e.g., different clinical institutes). Collaborative efforts are limited as privacy constraints forbid direct sharing across the borders of these data silos. Federated learning is a scalable and privacy-preserving framework for collaborative training of AI models without data sharing, where instead the knowledge is exchanged in form of wisdom learned from the data. This article aims at introducing the established concept of federated learning together with chances and challenges to foster collaboration on AI-based applications within the dental research community.

ABSTRACT

A wide range of deep learning (DL) architectures with varying depths are available, with developers usually choosing one or a few of them for their specific task in a nonsystematic way. Benchmarking (i.e., the systematic comparison of state-of-the art architectures on a specific task) may provide guidance in the model development process and may allow developers to make better decisions. However, comprehensive benchmarking has not been performed in dentistry yet. We aimed to benchmark a range of architecture designs for 1 specific, exemplary case: tooth structure segmentation on dental bitewing radiographs. We built 72 models for tooth structure (enamel, dentin, pulp, fillings, crowns) segmentation by combining 6 different DL network architectures (U-Net, U-Net++, Feature Pyramid Networks, LinkNet, Pyramid Scene Parsing Network, Mask Attention Network) with 12 encoders from 3 different encoder families (ResNet, VGG, DenseNet) of varying depth (e.g., VGG13, VGG16, VGG19). On each model design, 3 initialization strategies (ImageNet, CheXpert, random initialization) were applied, resulting overall into 216 trained models, which were trained up to 200 epochs with the Adam optimizer (learning rate = 0.0001) and a batch size of 32. Our data set consisted of 1,625 human-annotated dental bitewing radiographs. We used a 5-fold cross-validation scheme and quantified model performances primarily by the F1-score. Initialization with ImageNet or CheXpert weights significantly outperformed random initialization (P < 0.05). Deeper and more complex models did not necessarily perform better than less complex alternatives. VGG-based models were more robust across model configurations, while more complex models (e.g., from the ResNet family) achieved peak performances. In conclusion, initializing models with pretrained weights may be recommended when training models for dental radiographic analysis. Less complex model architectures may be competitive alternatives if computational resources and training time are restricting factors. Models developed and found superior on nondental data sets may not show this behavior for dental domain-specific tasks.

ABSTRACT

Medical and dental artificial intelligence (AI) require the trust of both users and recipients of the AI to enhance implementation, acceptability, reach, and maintenance. Standardization is one strategy to generate such trust, with quality standards pushing for improvements in AI and reliable quality in a number of attributes. In the present brief review, we summarize ongoing activities from research and standardization that contribute to the trustworthiness of medical and, specifically, dental AI and discuss the role of standardization and some of its key elements. Furthermore, we discuss how explainable AI methods can support the development of trustworthy AI models in dentistry. In particular, we demonstrate the practical benefits of using explainable AI on the use case of caries prediction on near-infrared light transillumination images.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Piromelatine is a novel melatonin MT1/2/3 and serotonin 5-HT-1A/1D receptors agonist developed for mild Alzheimer's disease (AD). In a randomized, placebo-controlled, dose-ranging study (ReCognition) of piromelatine (5, 20, and 50 mg daily for 6 months) in participants with mild dementia due to AD (n=371, age 60-85 years), no statistically significant differences were found between the piromelatine and placebo-treated groups on the primary (i.e., computerized neuropsychological test battery (cNTB)) and secondary outcomes (ADCS-CGIC, ADCS-MCI-ADL, ADAS-cog14, NPI, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)) nor were there safety concerns (https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT02615002). OBJECTIVES: This study was aimed at identifying genetic markers predicting piromelatine treatment response using a genome-wide association approach (GWAS). DESIGN: Variant genotyping of a combined whole genome and whole exome sequencing was performed using DNA extracted from lymphocytes from consenting participants. The general case-control allelic test was performed on piromelatine-treated participants, taking "responders" (i.e., >0.125 change from baseline in the cNTB) as cases and "non responders" as controls, using a Cochran-Armitage trend test. SETTING: 58 outpatient clinics in the US. PARTICIPANTS: 371 participants were randomized in the trial; 107 provided informed consent for genotyping. RESULTS: The GWAS sample did not differ from the full study cohort in demographics, baseline characteristics, or response to piromelatine. Six single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in chromosome 2q12 (2:107,510,000-107,540,000) were associated with response (p-value < 1x10 -4 each). Post hoc analyses suggested that the carriers of the 2q12 polymorphism cluster (27% of the GWAS sample) improved significantly on the cNTB on piromelatine as compared to placebo but significantly worsened on the ADAS-Cog14 and PSQI. By contrast, "non-carriers" improved significantly with piromelatine compared to placebo on the ADAS-Cog14 ( 2.91 (N=23) with piromelatine 20 mg vs 1.65 (N=19) with placebo (p=0.03)) and PSQI. CONCLUSIONS: The 2q12 (2:107,510,000-107,540,000) 5-6 SNPs cluster may predict efficacy of piromelatine for mild AD. These findings warrant further investigation in a larger, prospective early-stage AD clinical trial for patients who are non-carriers of the 2q12 polymorphism cluster.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare clinical characteristics and adipose/liver tissue histology analysis in HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected subjects undergoing bariatric surgery. DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional study of HIV-infected subjects undergoing single-port sleeve gastrectomy with prospective enrolment and frequency age (±5 years), sex, and body mass index (BMI, ± 5 kg/m2) matched on HIV-uninfected subjects. METHODS: This study was conducted at a single clinical site at Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital-Paris-France comprising 19 HIV-uninfected and 21 HIV-infected subjects with plasma VL < 20 copies/mL, all with a BMI > 40 kg/m2 or >35 kg/m2 with comorbidities. Histology of subcutaneous and visceral abdominal adipose tissue (SCAT/VAT) and liver biopsies was collected during single-port sleeve gastrectomy. Outcomes included anthropometric characteristics, comorbidities, cardiovascular parameters, adipose tissue, and liver histology. RESULTS: The age of HIV-infected participants was (median, interquartile range IQR) 48 y (42-51), with 76.2% females, a BMI of 41.4 kg/m2 (37.3-44.4), an antiretroviral duration of 16 y (8-21), current integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI)-based regimen in 15 participants and non-INSTI regimen in 6 participants, and a CD4 count of 864/mm3 (560-1066). The age of controls was 43 y (37-51), with 78.9% females and a BMI of 39.2 kg/m2 (36.3-42.6). Anthropometric characteristics, comorbidities, and cardiovascular parameters did not differ according to HIV status and INSTI treatment. The number of macrophage crown-like structures in SCAT was lower in INSTI-treated participants than in HIV-uninfected participants (P = 0.02) and non-INSTI-treated HIV-infected subjects (P = 0.07). Hepatic steatosis and liver disease severity global score were lower in INSTI-treated participants than in non-INSTI-treated HIV-infected participants (P = 0.05 and P = 0.04, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected subjects undergoing bariatric surgery presented a similar profile regarding anthropometric measures, cardiovascular parameters, and comorbidities. However, INSTI-treated participants presented milder SCAT and liver alterations than non-INSTI-treated participants.

ABSTRACT

Due to increased contribution from agriculture sector to total greenhouse gas emissions, there is need to study the ability of no-tilled diverse cropping systems including crop sequences and bio-covers to mitigate C equivalent emissions. Thus, C-footprint was calculated for a long-term experiment at the University of Tennessee's Research and Education Center in Milan with six-crop sequences: continuous cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), cotton-corn (Zea mays L.), continuous corn, corn-soybean (Glycine max L.), continuous soybean, and soybean-cotton interacted with four bio-covers: poultry litter, hairy vetch (Vicia villosa), winter wheat (Triticum aestivum), and fallow control with three replicates in a strip-plot design. During the experiment duration (2002-2017), field inputs (fertilizers, pesticides, and machinery used for planting, chemical applications, and harvesting) and outputs (crop yield, aboveground, and belowground residue) were assessed for each crop sequence/bio-cover combination to calculate total C equivalence of inputs and outputs, net C gain, C footprint per kg yield, sustainability index, and nitrous oxide emissions. For continuous corn, C-based input emissions were significantly higher by 0.28-0.62 Mg CO2 eq. ha-1 yr-1 than all other sequences, however, a greater net C gain (5.4 Mg C eq. ha-1 yr-1) was also observed due to increased crop yield, aboveground and belowground residues. Poultry litter application resulted in lower C-footprint (1.59-2.09 kg CO2 eq. kg-1 yield) than hairy vetch, wheat, and fallow under all crop sequences. Hairy vetch also lowered C-footprint per kg yield (∼2-14%) when compared with wheat under continuous systems of corn, soybean, and cotton, and cotton-corn rotation. Poultry litter application increased sustainability index (23-45) of all cropping sequences compared with other bio-covers. Hairy vetch improved sustainability index of corn including cropping sequences as compared with wheat and fallow. Inclusion of soybean and cotton with corn significantly decreased nitrous oxide emissions by 20-25%. The major factor contributing towards C-based input emissions was N fertilizer with 68% contribution to total emissions on average. It is concluded that application of poultry litter can reduce per yield C-footprint and enhance production system sustainability compared with hairy vetch, wheat, and fallow for monocultures or rotations of corn, soybean, cotton. Additionally, hairy vetch can outperform wheat in reducing the per yield C-footprint for continuous corn/soybean/cotton, and cotton-corn rotation. Especially for corn production systems, hairy vetch can enhance sustainability index compared with wheat and fallow. In order to increase per hectare net C gain, reduce per yield C-footprint and enhance sustainability index simultaneously, integration of continuous corn or corn-soybean/cotton rotation with bio-cover poultry litter or hairy vetch may perform better than the monocultures of soybean or cotton integrated with bio-cover wheat or fallow control in the Mid-south USA.

ABSTRACT

Congenital syndactylies account for 1 to 2 out of 2000 birth defects. Although several types of syndactylies exist, we only studied embryonic syndactylies. The goal of our study was to compare 2 types of coverage flap for the reconstruction of the finger web spaces: a volar flap described by Blauth and a dorsal flap described by Gilbert. Between 1993 and 2015, children affected by simple and complex syndactylies (partial or complete) were treated in 2 french pediatric hospitals and were selected for our analytic, comparative, retrospective review. The 2 hospitals used different surgical techniques: one used a volar flap described by Blauth and the other a dorsal flap described by Gilbert. The children were followed up to look for signs according to the stages of the Classification of Withey and to evaluate a global result according to the score of Withey. Our secondary criteria of judgement were the aspect of the surgical scar according to the VSS (Vancouver Scar Scale) and the satisfaction of the parents and children. The age of the children, need for a surgical revision and time of last follow- up were also studied. We found statistically significant differences between group I (volar flap) and group II (dorsal flap) in favor of the volar flap: higher scores of Withey (even when the number of commissures was increasing) and better VSS (regardless of the number of web spaces treated). There was no statistically significant difference between the 2 groups in terms of age, follow-up, or rate of surgical revision. All in all, the volar flap presented less sequelae in terms of scar retraction. Regardless of the flap used, the cosmetic results of the full-thickness skin graft used impacted the result both on the receiving site (dyschromia, hairiness) and the donor site.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Persistent symptoms have recently emerged as a clinical issue in COVID-19. We aimed to assess the prevalence and risk factors in symptomatic non-hospitalized individuals with mild COVID-19. METHODS: We performed a prospective cohort study of symptomatic COVID-19 outpatients, from March to May 2020, with weekly phone calls from clinical onset until day 30 and up to day 60 in case of persistent symptoms. The main outcomes were the proportion of patients with complete recovery at day 30 and day 60 and factors associated with persistent symptoms. RESULTS: We enrolled 429 individuals mostly women (72.5%) and healthcare workers (72.5%), with a median age of 41.6 years [IQR 30-51.5]. Symptoms included: cough (69.7%), asthenia (68.8%), anosmia (64.8%), headaches (64.6%), myalgia (62.7%), gastrointestinal symptoms (61.8%), fever (61.5%), and ageusia (60.8%). Mean duration of disease was 27 days (95%CI: 25-29). The rate of persistent symptoms was 46.8% at day 30 and 6.5% at day 60 consisting in asthenia (32.6%), anosmia (32.6%), and ageusia (30.4%). The probability of complete recovery was 56.3% (95%CI: 51.7-61.1) at day 30 and 85.6% (95%CI: 81.2-89.4) at day 60. Factors associated with persistent symptoms were age>40 (HR 0.61), female sex (HR 0.70), low cycle threshold (HR 0.78), and ageusia (HR 0.59). CONCLUSIONS: COVID-19 - even in its mild presentation - led to persistent symptoms (up to one month) in nearly half of individuals. Identification of risk factors such as age, gender, ageusia and viral load is crucial for clinical management and argues for the development of antiviral agents.

ABSTRACT

Background: Evidence regarding favorable treatment of patients with functional mitral regurgitation (FMR) using transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) is constantly growing. However, there is only few data directly comparing TEER and surgical mitral valve repair (SMVr). Aims: To compare baseline characteristics, short-term and 1-year outcomes in FMR patients undergoing mitral valve (MV) TEER or SMVr using a meta-analytic approach. Methods: Systematic database search identified 1,703 studies reporting on TEER or SMVr for treatment of FMR between January 2010 and December 2020. A meta-analytic approach was used to compare outcomes from single-arm and randomized studies based on measures by means of their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI). Statistical significance was assumed if CIs did not overlap. A total of 21 TEER and 37 SMVr studies comprising 4,304 and 3,983 patients were included. Results: Patients in the TEER cohort presented with higher age (72.0 ± 1.7 vs. 64.7 ± 4.7 years, p < 0.001), greater burden of comorbidities like hypertension (p < 0.001), atrial fibrillation (p < 0.001), lung disease (p < 0.001) and chronic renal disease (p = 0.005) as well as poorer left ventricular ejection fraction (30.9 ± 5.7 vs. 36.6 ± 5.3%, p < 0.001). In-hospital mortality was significantly lower with TEER [3% (95%-CI 0.02-0.03) vs. 5% (95%-CI 0.04-0.07)] and 1-year mortality did not differ significantly [18% (95%-CI 0.15-0.21) vs. 11% (0.07-0.18)]. NYHA [1.06 (95%-CI 0.87-1.26) vs. 1.15 (0.74-1.56)] and MR reduction [1.74 (95%-CI 1.52-1.97) vs. 2.08 (1.57-2.59)] were comparable between both cohorts. Conclusion: Despite considerably higher age and comorbidity burden, in-hospital mortality was significantly lower in FMR patients treated with TEER, whereas a tendency toward increased 1-year mortality was observed in this high-risk population. In terms of functional status and MR grade reduction, comparable 1-year results were achieved.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this work was to report the occurrence of dicephalus iniodymus monauchenos in a Nellore newborn. A three-days old calf, from in vitro production, with duplication of the head and a history of cesarean birth was attended. On physical examination, the dicephalus, iniodymus and monauchenos, which were almost the same size and shape, had four eyes and four ears. Computed tomography showed the presence of two skulls fused with a common occipital foramen, two nasopharynxes, oropharynxes with the presence of a cleft lip and a cleft palate in the right head, which continued in a single esophagus and a single trachea. At necropsy, the presence of duplication of the cerebrum and cerebellum was observed, with union of the parts in the region of the trapezoid body of the brainstem and continued as a single spinal cord. This study characterizes the clinical, tomographic, and necropsy findings of a dicephalus Nelore neonate.(AU)


O objetivo deste trabalho foi relatar a ocorrência de Dicephalus Iniodymus Monauchenos em um neonato da raça Nelore de produção in vitro. Foi atendida uma fêmea bovina, de três dias de idade, com duplicação das cabeças e histórico de nascimento por meio de cesariana. No exame físico, observou-se a dicefalia, Iniodymus e Monauchenos, apresentando quatro olhos e quatro orelhas. Na tomografia computadorizada, constatou-se a presença de dois crânios fundidos com um forame occipital comum, duas nasofaringes, orofaringes com presença de lábio leporino e fenda palatina na cabeça direita, que continuavam em um único esôfago e em uma única traqueia. Na necropsia, observou-se a presença de duplicação do encéfalo e cerebelo, com união das partes na região do corpo trapezoide do tronco encefálico, que continuavam como uma única medula espinhal. Este estudo caracteriza os achados clínicos, tomográficos e de necropsia de um neonato Nelore dicefálico.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The broad diversity of microplastic litter requires a selection of analytical techniques to reliably determine the particle's chemical composition. This study demonstrates that Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) can identify microplastic particles based on their spectral fingerprints. By studying the spectral features of polymer reference spectra, microplastic litter can be distinguished from non-plastic materials. The results show that LIBS can be used as a fast in-situ technique for pre-characterization of the microparticle's material and is a possible tool for environmental studies on microplastics.
