ABSTRACT

A syndemic is the co-existence of two or more health problems (including both social and biological features) that adversely influence each other with negative consequences on disease outcomes and perpetuation of inequalities. The syndemic approach can be applied to better understand the course of rheumatic musculoskeletal diseases (RMD) involving the study of adverse biological pathways and social determinants of health (SDH) all under the same framework. Identifying if a syndemic exists within RMDs may include investigating the synergic interactions between comorbidity (e.g., diabetes, obesity, chronic kidney diseases) and the concomitant of other adverse conditions (e.g., drug non-adherence, substance abuse), along with SDHs such as low household income, unemployment, low education, limited access to health care, as well as racial/ethnic discrimination. For decades, the understanding of RMDs progression has been based on causality, rather than investigating the kaleidoscopic web of connections that can potentially influence a disease course. The co-existence of health burdens in vulnerable populations, including those with RMD, specifically in certain socioeconomic groups, calls for new ways and strategies of thinking to improve our understanding of risk factors and co-morbidities to offer tailored interventions for clinical medicine and public health policy.

ABSTRACT

Numerous case studies show that citizens engage in various ways in renewable and low carbon energy projects, thereby contributing to the sustainable energy transition. To date, however, a systematic and cross-country database on citizen-led initiatives and projects is lacking. By performing a major compilation and reviewing copious data sources from websites to official registries, we provide a Europe-wide inventory with over 10,000 initiatives and 16,000 production units in 29 countries, focusing on the past 20 years. Our data allow cross-country statistical analysis, supporting the elicitation of empirical insights capable of extending beyond the perspective of single case studies. Our data also align with ongoing efforts to implement two EU Directives that aim at strengthening the active role of citizens in the energy transition. While the focus of our data collection is on Europe, the data and methodology can contribute to the global analysis of citizen-led energy action.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this paper is to estimate the potential impacts of different COVID-19 scenarios on the Italian energy sector through 2030, with a specific focus on transport and industry. The analysis takes a multi-disciplinary approach to properly consider the complex interactions of sectors across Italy. This approach includes the assessment of economic conditions using macroeconomic and input-output models, modelling the evolution of the energy system using an energy and transport model, and forecasting the reaction of travel demand and modal choice using econometric models and expert interviews. Results show that the effect of COVID-19 pandemic may lead to mid-term effects on energy consumption. The medium scenario, which assumes a stop of the emergency by the end of 2021, shows that energy-related emissions remain 10% lower than the baseline in the industry sector and 6% lower in the transport sector by 2030, when compared with a pre-COVID trend. Policy recommendations to support a green recovery are discussed in light of the results.
