ABSTRACT

Before the 19th century, all communication and official records relied on handwritten documents, cherished as valuable artefacts by different ethnic groups. While significant efforts have been made to automate the transcription of major languages like English, French, Arabic, and Chinese, there has been less research on regional and minor languages, despite their importance from geographical and historical perspectives. This research focuses on detecting and recognizing Pashto handwritten characters and ligatures, which is essential for preserving this regional cursive language in Pakistan and its status as the national language of Afghanistan. Deep learning techniques were employed to detect and recognize Pashto characters and ligatures, utilizing a newly developed dataset specific to Pashto. A further enhancement was done on the dataset by implementing data augmentation, i.e., scaling and rotation on Pashto handwritten characters and ligatures, which gave us many variations of a single trajectory. Different morphological operations for minimizing gaps in the trajectories were also performed. The median filter was used for the removal of different noises. This dataset will be combined with the existing PHWD-V2 dataset. Various deep-learning techniques were evaluated, including VGG19, MobileNetV2, MobileNetV3, and a customized CNN. The customized CNN demonstrated the highest accuracy and minimal loss, achieving a training accuracy of 93.98%, validation accuracy of 92.08% and testing accuracy of 92.99%.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this research article is to derive a new relation between rough sets and soft sets with an algebraic structure quantale by using soft binary relations. The aftersets and foresets are utilized to define lower approximation and upper approximation of soft subsets of quantales. As a consequence of this new relation, different characterization of rough soft substructures of quantales is obtained. To emphasize and make a clear understanding, soft compatible and soft complete relations are focused, and these are interpreted by aftersets and foresets. Particularly, in our work, soft compatible and soft complete relations play an important role. Moreover, this concept generalizes the concept of rough soft substructures of other structures. Furthermore, the algebraic relations between the upper (lower) approximation of soft substructures of quantales and the upper (lower) approximation of their homomorphic images with the help of soft quantales homomorphism are examined. In comparison with the different type of approximations in different type of algebraic structures, it is concluded that this new study is much better.

ABSTRACT

The novel N-p-carboxy benzyl chitosan (CBC)/ poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) based mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) filled with surface-modified zeolite have been prepared using the dissolution casting technique. The applicability of prepared MMMs for direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) was investigated in terms of water uptake, methanol permeation, and proton conductivity by changing filler content (10-50 wt. %). The zeolite was modified by silane coupling agent, 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS). The resultant modified zeolite (MZ) was incorporated into CBC/PVA blend to obtain mixed matrix PEMs. The functional group, structural properties, morphological and topographical investigation of MMMs were examined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) respectively. The prepared MMMs exhibited a remarkable decrease in methanol permeability of 2.3 × 10-7  cm2/s with C-CPMZ50. The maximum value of proton conductivity of 0.0527 Scm-1, was shown by C-CMPZ10. The prepared PEMs also displayed good stability during long term operating time.

ABSTRACT

Bluetongue virus (BTV), a member of Orbivirus genus (family Reoviridae), is a non-contagious infection of domestic and wild ruminants. The current study was designed to detect various serotypes of BTV in small ruminants of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province of Pakistan, along with their effects on hemato-biochemical parameters. A total of 408 serum samples in four districts (Mansehra, Abbottabad, Swabi, and Kohat) of KPK from small ruminants were screened based on competitive ELISA (cELISA). A total of 204 (50%) samples were found positive for BTV group-specific antibodies. The seropositive samples were processed for the detection of BTV serotypes through real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Out of 204 cELISA-positive samples, 60 (29.41%) were found positive through qPCR. Three serotypes [6, 8, 9] were detected from Mansehra District and two from Kohat [2, 8] and Abbottabad [6, 8], while only one from Swabi [8]. The serotype "8" was found consistently in all the four study districts. A significant (p < 0.05) increase in the level of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was recorded in goats, whereas aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in sheep infected with BTV, compared to healthy animals. The hematological parameters showed significantly (p < 0.05) raised total leucocyte count (TLC) in both sheep and goats, whereas only hematocrit (HCT) value was increased significantly (p < 0.05) in infected sheep. This is the first report on serotyping of BTV among small ruminants in Pakistan.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: To determine mean tip-apex distance after Dynamic Hip Screw fixation of intertrochanteric fracture. METHODS: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Orthopaedics, Hayatabad Medical Complex, Peshawar from October 2015 to September 2016 on a total 285 patients. RESULTS: A total of 285 patients were observed. Status of TAD among 285 patients was analysed as 171 (60%) patients had TAD ranged 15 mm to 20 mm, 91(32%) patients had TAD ranged 21 mm to 25 mm, 23 (8%) patients had TAD ranged >25mm. Mean TAD was 18 mm with SD±7.45. Eight percent patients had screw cut out while 92% patients didn't had screw cut out. CONCLUSIONS: To avoid lag screw cut out in dynamic hip screw for intertrochanteric fracture of hip the Tip apex distance must be accurate otherwise there will be cut out of lag screw.

ABSTRACT

The Internet of things (IoT) comprises a huge collection of electronic devices connected to the Internet to ensure the dependable exchange of sensing information. It involves mobile workers (MWs) who perform various activities to support enormous online services and applications. In mobile crowd sensing (MCS), a massive amount of sensing data is also generated by smart devices. Broadly, in the IoT, verifying the credibility and truthfulness of MWs' sensing reports is needed for MWs to expect attractive rewards. MWs are recruited by paying monetary incentives that must be awarded according to the quality and quantity of the task. The main problem is that MWs may perform false reporting by sharing low-quality reported data to reduce the effort required. In the literature, false reporting is improved by hiring enough MWs for a task to evaluate the trustworthiness and acceptability of information by aggregating the submitted reports. However, it may not be possible due to budget constraints, or when malicious reporters are not identified and penalized properly. Recruitment is still not a refined process, which contributes to low sensing quality. This paper presents Reputation, Quality-aware Recruitment Platform (RQRP) to recruit MWs based on reputation for quality reporting with the intention of platform profit maximization in the IoT scenario. RQRP comprises two main phases: filtration in the selection of MWs and verifying the credibility of reported tasks. The former is focused on the selection of suitable MWs based on different criteria (e.g., reputation, bid, expected quality, and expected platform utility), while the latter is more concerned with the verification of sensing quality, evaluation of reputation score, and incentives. We developed a testbed to evaluate and analyze the datasets, and a simulation was performed for data collection scenario from smart sensing devices. Results proved the superiority of RQRP against its counterparts in terms of truthfulness, quality, and platform profit maximization. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to study the impact of truthful reporting on platform utility.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To determine the outcome of treatment of microsurgical clipping in elderly (60 - 70 years) patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and determine the predictors of poor outcome. STUDY DESIGN: Longitudinal analytical study. PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: Nishtar Hospital, Multan, Mayo Hospital, Lahore, Department of Neurosurgery, Lahore General Hospital, Lahore, from January 2000 to January 2010. METHODOLOGY: Elderly patients (60 - 70 years) with ruptured cerebral aneurysm were enrolled and graded on the basis of World Federation of Neurosurgeons Scale (WFNS). Aneurysm sac obliteration was done in all the patients with microsurgical clipping. Postoperatively, the patients were assessed upto 3 months for outcome parameters i.e., neurological deterioration (based on WFNS grade and modified Rankin scale as favourable (mRS score ² 2) and unfavourable (mRS score > 2). The factors associated with unfavourable outcome were also noted which included age > 65 years, poor initial WFNS grade, and the occurrence of ischaemia. RESULTS: The mean age of the 48 patients was 65 + 5.45 years. There were 31 (64.6%) male and 17 (35.4%) female patients. Postprocedural neurological deterioration occurred in 23 patients (47.9%) related to ischaemia in 14 (29.16%), rebleeding in 1 (2%), and hydrocephalus in 8 (16.66%). At 03 months, the outcome was favourable in 25 patients (52.08%) and unfavourable in 23 (47.91%). CONCLUSION: In old patients, careful pre-operative assessment, interdisciplinary approach and meticulous tissue handling during aneurysm clipping may decrease the unfavourable outcome.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of myocardial damage in elective, successful, single vessel percutaneous coronary angioplasty by assessing myocardial band (MB), creatinine kinase levels and to find out the association of common modifiable risk factors with myocardial damage in patients undergoing single vessel coronary angioplasty. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive. PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology / National Institute of Heart Disease, Rawalpindi, from September 2006 to September 2007. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty patients undergoing elective and successful single vessel percutaneous coronary angioplasty were evaluated with creatinine kinase and creatinine kinase MB levels before and after 8 hours and 1st day following coronary angioplasty. Studied variables included the length of stent deployed, maximum deployment pressure and total balloon inflation time, apart from hypertension, cholesterol level, smoking and diabetes mellitus. RESULTS: Out of 50 patients, 9 had raised creatinine kinase at 8 hours (18%) and 10 had raised creatinine kinase (20%) on 1st day following coronary angioplasty, 7 (14%) patients and 8 (16%) patients had raised creatinine kinase MB levels at 8 hours and 1st day following coronary angioplasty respectively. The rise of either was equal to or more than 3 times the normal limits. Modifiable risk factors, significantly associated with myocardial damage, were diabetes mellitus (p=0.006) and LDL levels (p=0.009) in patients undergoing single vessel coronary angioplasty. CONCLUSION: Successful elective, uncomplicated, single vessel coronary angioplasty resulted in some myocardial damage evident by mild rise in cardiac enzymes but rise of creatinine kinase MB above 3 times of normal, which signifies percutaneous coronary angioplasty-related myocardial infarction, was not seen. There was a significant association between diabetes mellitus, LDL levels and myocardial damage in patients undergoing coronary angioplasty but no significant association was found between hypertension, smoking and myocardial damage.
