ABSTRACT

Metalo hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (MHOFs) have received growing interest in designing crystalline functional materials. However, reports on bifunctional MHOFs showing magnetic and proton-conductive properties are extremely limited and their design is challenging. Herein, we investigated the magnetic and proton-conductive properties of two sulfonated CoHOF and MnHOF, {M(H2O)2(abs)2}n (M = Co2+ and Mn2+, Habs = 4-aminoazobenzene-4'-sulfonic anion), constructed by coordination chains. The supramolecular frameworks sustained by H bonds between -SO3- and coordinated water show directional ladder-type H bonds with hydrophilic nanochannels, leading to high proton conduction with exceptionally high conductivity around 10-2 S cm-1 at 100 °C under 97% relative humidity. In particular, the maximum σ value of CoHOF, 2.11 × 10-2 S cm-1, recorded the highest value among the reported proton-conducting materials showing slow magnetic relaxation. Meanwhile, the molecular structure of organosulfonate enables the magnetic isolation of high-spin Co2+ and Mn2+ centers in the frameworks. Magnetic measurements indicated that the MHOFs show field-induced single-ion magnet (SIM) properties, making these compounds rare magnetic-proton-conductive MHOFs. The work provides not only two unique MHOFs with SIM behavior and high proton conduction performance but also avenues for designing stable bifunctional MHOFs via a coordination chain approach.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To determine the pharmacological impact of hesperidin, the main component of Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, on depressive behavior and elucidate the mechanism by which hesperidin treats depression, focusing on the gut-brain axis. METHODS: Fifty-four Sprague Dawley male rats were randomly allocated to 6 groups using a random number table, including control, model, hesperidin, probiotics, fluoxetine, and Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium groups. Except for the control group, rats in the remaining 5 groups were challenged with chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) for 21 days and housed in single cages. The sucrose preference test (SPT), immobility time in the forced swim test (FST), and number in the open field test (OFT) were performed to measure the behavioral changes in the rats. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to determine the levels of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in brain tissue, and the histopathology was performed to evaluate the changes of colon tissue, together with sequencing of the V3-V4 regions of 16S rRNA gene on feces to explore the changes of intestinal flora in the rats. RESULTS: Compared to the control group, the rats in the model group showed notable reductions in body weight, SPF, and number in OFT (P<0.01). Hesperidin was found to ameliorate depression induced by CUMS, as seen by improvements in body weight, SPT, immobility time in FST, and number in OFT (P<0.05 or P<0.01). Regarding neurotransmitters, it was found that at a dose of 50 mg/kg hesperidin treatment upregulated the levels of 5-HT and BDNF in depressed rats (P<0.05). Compared to the control group, the colon tissue of the model group exhibited greater inflammatory cell infiltration, with markedly reduced numbers of goblet cells and crypts and were significantly improved following treatment with hesperidin. Simultaneously, the administration of hesperidin demonstrated a positive impact on the gut microbiome of rats treated with CUMS, such as Shannon index increased and Simpson index decreased (P<0.01), while the abundance of Pseudomonadota and Bacteroidota increased in the hesperidin-treated group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The mechanism responsible for the beneficial effects of hesperidin on depressive behavior in rats may be related to inhibition of the expressions of BDNF and 5-HT and preservation of the gut microbiota.

ABSTRACT

Dielectric capacitors are highly desired for electronic systems owing to their high-power density and ultrafast charge/discharge capability. However, the current dielectric capacitors suffer severely from the thermal instabilities, with sharp deterioration of energy storage performance at elevated temperatures. Here, guided by phase-field simulations, we conceived and fabricated the self-assembled metadielectric nanostructure with HfO2 as second-phase in BaHf0.17Ti0.83O3 relaxor ferroelectric matrix. The metadielectric structure can not only effectively increase breakdown strength, but also broaden the working temperature to 400 oC due to the enhanced relaxation behavior and substantially reduced conduction loss. The energy storage density of the metadielectric film capacitors can achieve to 85 joules per cubic centimeter with energy efficiency exceeding 81% in the temperature range from 25 °C to 400 °C. This work shows the fabrication of capacitors with potential applications in high-temperature electric power systems and provides a strategy for designing advanced electrostatic capacitors through a metadielectric strategy.

ABSTRACT

Background: Cervical cancer (CC) remains the second leading cause of cancer-related death in women, and the ability to accurately anticipate the presence or absence of lymphovascular space invasion (LVSI) is critical to maintaining optimal patient outcomes. The objective of this study was to establish and verify an MRI radiomics-based model to predict the status of LVSI in patients with operable CC. Methods: The current study performed a retrospective analysis, with 86 patients in the training cohort and 38 patients in the testing group, specifically focusing on patients with CC. The radiomics feature extraction process included ADC, T2WI-SPAIR, and T2WI sequences. The training group data were used for the initial radionics-based model building, and the model predictive performance was subsequently validated using data from patients recruited in the experimental group. Results: The development of the radiomics scoring model has been completed with 17 selected features. The study found several risk factors associated with LVSI. These risk factors included moderate tumor differentiation (P = 0.005), poor tumor differentiation (P = 0.001), and elevated combined sequence-based radiomics scores (P = 0.001). Radiomics scores based on predictive model, combined sequences, ADC, T2WI-SPAIR, and T2WI exhibited AUCs of 0.897, 0.839, 0.815, 0.698, and 0.739 in the training cohort, respectively, with corresponding testing cohort values of 0.833, 0.833, 0.683, 0.692, and 0.725. Excellent consistency was shown by the calibration curve analysis, which showed a higher degree of agreement between the actual and anticipated LVSI status. Moreover, the decision curve analysis outcomes demonstrated the medical application of this prediction model. Conclusion: This investigation indicated that the MRI radiomics model was successfully developed and validated to predict operable CC patient LVSI status, attaining high overall diagnostic accuracy. However, further external validation and more deeper analysis on a larger sample size are still needed.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The relationship between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and the occurrence of arrhythmias and heart rate variability (HRV) in hypertensive patients is not elucidated. Our study investigates the association between OSA, arrhythmias, and HRV in hypertensive patients. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis involving hypertensive patients divided based on their apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) into two groups: the AHI ≤ 15 and the AHI > 15. All participants underwent polysomnography (PSG), 24-hour dynamic electrocardiography (DCG), cardiac Doppler ultrasound, and other relevant evaluations. RESULTS: The AHI > 15 group showed a significantly higher prevalence of frequent atrial premature beats and atrial tachycardia (P = 0.030 and P = 0.035, respectively) than the AHI ≤ 15 group. Time-domain analysis indicated that the standard deviation of normal-to-normal R-R intervals (SDNN) and the standard deviation of every 5-minute normal-to-normal R-R intervals (SDANN) were significantly higher in the AHI > 15 group (P = 0.020 and P = 0.033, respectively). Frequency domain analysis revealed that the low-frequency (LF), high-frequency (HF) components, and the LF/HF ratio were also significantly elevated in the AHI > 15 group (P < 0.001, P = 0.031, and P = 0.028, respectively). Furthermore, left atrial diameter (LAD) was significantly larger in the AHI > 15 group (P < 0.001). Both univariate and multivariable linear regression analyses confirmed a significant association between PSG-derived independent variables and the dependent HRV parameters SDNN, LF, and LF/HF ratio (F = 8.929, P < 0.001; F = 14.832, P < 0.001; F = 5.917, P = 0.016, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Hypertensive patients with AHI > 15 are at an increased risk for atrial arrhythmias and left atrial dilation, with HRV significantly correlating with OSA severity.

ABSTRACT

We report two previously undiscovered phases of GeTe including the sphalerite (c-) phase and the hexagonal (h-) phase with interlayer van der Waals gaps. A polymorphic phase transformation from rhombohedral α-GeTe to c- and h-GeTe at near room temperature is first realized via electron beam irradiation. Their underlying thermodynamics and kinetics are illustrated using the in situ heating experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. Density-functional theory calculations indicate that c-GeTe exhibits typical metallic behavior and h-GeTe is a narrow-gap semiconductor with a strong spin-orbital coupling effect. Our findings shed light on a strategy for designing GeTe-based quantum devices compromising nanopillars and heterostructures via an atomic-scale electron beam lithography technique.

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the effect of foreign executives on firms' innovation performance and the mediation role of digital transformation in Chinese-listed firms from 2011 to 2021. Our findings indicate that the presence of foreign executives in top management teams promotes firms' innovation performance by enhancing digital transformation. Further analyses show that foreign executives contribute significantly to improving firms' radical innovation performance rather than incremental innovation performance. We also examine the moderating effect of negative performance feedback and financing constraints between foreign executives and innovation performance, finding that foreign executives can promote innovation performance particularly in firms with negative performance feedback and weak financing constraints.

ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by high blood glucose levels, which can cause many diseases, including osteoporosis, fractures, arthritis, and foot complications. The inhibitors of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4), an enzyme involved in glucose metabolism regulation, are essential for managing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). The inhibition of DPP-4 has become a promising treatment approach for T2DM because it can increase levels of active glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), leading to improved insulin secretion in response to glucose and reduced release of glucagon. The review commences by elucidating the role of DPP-4 in glucose homeostasis and its significance in T2DM pathophysiology. Furthermore, it presents the mechanism of action, preclinical pharmacodynamics, clinical efficacy, and toxicity profiles of small-molecule DPP-4 inhibitors across various clinical stages. This comprehensive review provides valuable insights into the synthesis and clinical application of DPP-4 inhibitors, serving as an invaluable resource for researchers, clinicians, and pharmaceutical professionals interested in diabetes therapeutics and drug development.

ABSTRACT

High-temperature piezoelectric materials, which enable the accurate and reliable sensing of physical parameters to guarantee the functional operation of various systems under harsh conditions, are highly demanded. To this end, both large piezoelectricity and high Curie temperature are pivotal figures of merit (FOMs) for high-temperature piezoceramics. Unfortunately, despite intensive pursuits, it remains a formidable challenge to unravel the inverse correlation between these FOMs. Herein, a conceptual material paradigm of multiscale structural engineering was proposed to address this dilemma. The synergistic effects of phase structure reminiscent of a polymorphic phase boundary and refined domain morphology simultaneously contribute to a large piezoelectric coefficient d33 of 30.3 pC/N and a high Curie temperature TC of 740 °C in (LiCeNd) codoped Na0.5Bi2.5Nb2O9 (NBN-LCN) ceramics. More encouragingly, the system has exceptional thermal stability and is nonsusceptible to mechanical loading. This study not only demonstrates that the high-performance and robust NBN-LCN high-temperature piezoceramics hold great potential for implements under harsh conditions but also opens an avenue for integrating antagonistic properties for the enhancement of the collective performance in functional materials.

Spider mites (Acari: Tetranychidae) are polyphagous pests of economic importance in agriculture, among which the two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch has spread widely worldwide as an invasive species, posing a serious threat to fruit tree production in China, including Beijing. The hawthorn spider mite, Amphitetranychus viennensis Zacher, is also a worldwide pest of fruit trees and woody ornamental plants. The cassava mite, Tetranychus truncatus Ehara, is mainly found in Asian countries, including China, Korea and Japan, and mainly affects fruit trees and agricultural crops. These three species of spider mites are widespread and serious fruit tree pests in Beijing. Rapid and accurate identification of spider mites is essential for effective pest and plant quarantine in Beijing orchard fields. The identification of spider mite species is difficult due to their limited morphological characteristics. Although the identification of insect and mite species based on PCR and real-time polymerase chain reaction TaqMan is becoming increasingly common, DNA extraction is difficult, expensive and time-consuming due to the minute size of spider mites. Therefore, the objective of this study was to establish a direct multiplex PCR method for the simultaneous identification of three common species of spider mites in orchards, A. viennensis, T. truncatus and T. urticae, to provide technical support for the differentiation of spider mite species and phytosanitary measures in orchards in Beijing. Based on the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) of the two-spotted spider mite and the cassava mite and the 18S gene sequence of the hawthorn spider mite as the amplification target, three pairs of specific primers were designed, and the primer concentrations were optimized to establish a direct multiplex PCR system for the rapid and accurate discrimination of the three spider mites without the need for DNA extraction and purification. The method showed a high sensitivity of 0.047 ng for T. truncatus and T. urticae DNA and 0.0002 ng for A. viennensis. This method eliminates the DNA extraction and sequencing procedures of spider mite samples, offers a possibility for rapid monitoring of multiple spider mites in an integrated microarray laboratory system, reducing the time and cost of leaf mite identification and quarantine monitoring in the field.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension frequently coexists with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and their interplay substantially impacts the prognosis of affected individuals. Investigating the influence of OSA on blood pressure variability (BPV) and blood pressure load (BPL) in hypertensive patients has become a focal point of clinical research. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited hypertensive patients (n = 265) without discrimination and classified them into four groups based on their apnea-hypopnea index (AHI): control group (n = 40), AHI < 5; mild group (n = 74), 5 ≤ AHI ≤ 15; moderate group (n = 68), 15 < AHI ≤ 30; severe group (n = 83), AHI > 30. All participants underwent comprehensive assessments, including polysomnography (PSG) monitoring, 24-h ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) monitoring, cardiac Doppler ultrasound, and additional examinations when indicated. RESULTS: BPV and BPL exhibited significant elevations in the moderate and severe OSA groups compared to the control and mild OSA groups (P < 0.05). Moreover, interventricular septum thickness and left ventricular end-diastolic volume (LVEDV) demonstrated higher values in the moderate and severe OSA groups (P < 0.05). Multiple stepwise regression analysis identified noteworthy risk factors for elevated BPV in hypertensive patients with OSA, including AHI, maximum apnea time, total times of oxygen reduction, and mean time of apnea. CONCLUSION: Hypertensive patients with moderate to severe OSA exhibited substantially increased BPV and BPL. Moreover, BPV was correlated with AHI, maximum apnea time, total times of oxygen reduction, and mean time of apnea in hypertensive patients with OSA.

ABSTRACT

Enhancing the performance of thermoelectric materials is demanded to develop strategies for introducing multidimensional microstructures into materials to induce full-scale phonon scattering while ensuring electrical transport performance. Herein, a previously unreported rhombohedral h-SnTe (R3̄m) has been achieved in the nanoscale dimension by the electron beam irradiation of ß-SnTe (Fm3̄m) materials. The h-SnTe structure contains interlayer van der Waals gaps and exhibits metallic behavior evaluated by density-functional theory calculations, which coherently appears in the narrow-band semiconductor ß-SnTe matrix. Our results provide a strategy for modifying the properties of SnTe-based thermoelectric materials and designing nanostructured chalcogenide heterostructures via electron beam irradiation.

The goal of this study was to investigate how the electron-donating capability around the lower valent metal ion and the electron-accepting capability of the higher valent metal ion influence metal to metal charge transfer (MMCT) properties in mixed-valence complexes. A series of trinuclear ruthenium complexes represented as [Ru2(ap-4-Me)3(CH3COO)NCRuCpMex(dppe)][PF6] (CpMex = polymethylcyclopentadienyl, x = 0, 1, and 5; and dppe = 1, 2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane, ap-4-Me = 2-anilino-4-methylpyridine) and their one-electron oxidized products were synthesized and fully characterized. The UV-vis-NIR spectra confirmed that as the electron donor character of the CpMex(dppe)RuCN fragment enhanced or the electron-accepting capability of the higher valent diruthenium cluster increased, the RuII → RuV2 or RuVI2 Ru2 MMCT bands shifted to lower energies, which was supported by TDDFT calculations.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the anatomical factors influencing elasticity values of normal testicular parenchyma using shear wave elastography (SWE). Methods: This study examined 68 healthy male volunteers (117 testes in which standard transverse axis ultrasonography views could be obtained) via conventional scrotal ultrasonography and SWE. Both the mean (EMean) and standard deviation (ESD) elasticity values were acquired. Results: In the standard transverse axis view of the rete testis at the mid-lateral edge of the testes, the EMean values in 2mm the testicular parenchyma from the rete testis and the testicular capsule at the same level as the rete testis were all significantly larger than in the central zone (P<0.001, P<0.001, respectively). The EMean value in the testicular parenchyma 2mm from the testicular capsule on the line formed approximately 45° below the horizontal line of the rete testis was significantly larger than in the rete testis approximately 45° above the horizontal line (P<0.001). In two standard transverse axis views, the ESD values in other regions were significantly larger than those in the central zones (all P<0.001). Also, the EMean values in the transmediastinal arteries were larger than those of the surrounding normal testicular parenchyma (P<0.001). Conclusion: Based on SWE, factors including the testicular capsule, the density of testicular fibrous septa, the depth of the Q-Box™, and the transmediastinal artery may influence the testes elasticity measurement. ABSTRACT

Background: business leaders' social status significantly impacts companies' strategic direction and performance. Digital transformation, an important tool for companies to enhance competitiveness and resilience, plays an important role in the relationship between executive background and firm performance. Objective: To investigate the impact of celebrity chief executive officers (CEO) on firm performance through digital transformation. Method: Using data from companies listed on the main boards of the Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges between 2017 and 2021, this study explored the relationship between celebrity CEOs, digital transformation, and firm performance. Result: Celebrity CEOs significantly enhanced a firm's digital transformation. However, this effect weakened when controlling shareholders and institutional investors held more shares. Additionally, the study showed that celebrity CEOs can improve firm performance through digital transformation. These findings were robust across a range of sensitivity analyses. Conclusion: This study contributes to understanding celebrity CEOs' decision-making motivations and economic impacts from a psychological perspective while also providing valuable insights for driving digital transformation within companies.

ABSTRACT

The primary objective in synthetic organic chemistry is to develop highly efficient, selective, and versatile synthetic methodologies, which are essential for discovering new drug candidates and agrochemicals. In this study, we present a unified strategy for a one-pot, catalytic enantioselective synthesis of α-alkyl and α,α'-dialkyl pyrrolidine, piperidine, and indolizidine alkaloids using readily available amides and alkynes. This synthesis is enabled by the identification and development of an Ir/Cu/N-PINAP catalyzed highly enantioselective and chemoselective reductive alkynylation of α-unbranched aliphatic amides, which serves as the key reaction. This reaction is combined with Pd-catalyzed tandem reactions in a one-pot approach, enabling the collective, catalytic enantioselective total syntheses of eight alkaloids and an anticancer antipode with 90-98% ee. The methodology's enantio-divergence is exemplified by the one-step access to either enantiomer of alkaloid bgugaine.

ABSTRACT

A novel sample preparation method based on polarity grouping was developed for the comprehensive determination of 315 undesirable low-weight organic pollutants ranging from polar to weakly polar in wolfberry. The method involves the swelling of the sample in ammonium acetate buffer, two-phase extraction, three-phase extraction, and dispersive solid phase extraction (D-SPE) with the assistance of low-temperature centrifugation and analysis by ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization tandem mass (UHPLC-ESI-MS-MS) by using the multiple reaction monitoring mode. The recoveries of the analytes with wide range of polarity were satisfactory. The matrix-fortified standard calibration curves were compared for quantification. The results of linearity were satisfactory with linear regression coefficients (R) ranging from 0.9901 to 1.000. The limits of quantification ranged from 1 µg/kg to 10.0 µg/kg, indicating the compliance of products with legal tolerances. The average recoveries for spiked wolfberry were in the range of 69.3 %-145.2 % with RSD values of 0.2 %-28.6 %. The inter-day precision was in the range of 0.2 %-27.0 %. For over 90 % of the analytes, the recoveries were 70 %-120 % with RSD values below 20 %. The application of this method in routine monitoring programs would imply a drastic reduction of both effort and time.

ABSTRACT

A cobalt(II) complex and manganese(II) coordination polymer, formulated as [Co2(H2btca)(mbpy)4][H2btca]·4H2O (1) and {Mn2(btca)(mbpy)2(H2O)2}n (2) (H4btca = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid; mbpy = 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridyl), constructed by mixed bipyridine-tetracarboxylic ligands were synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal structural analyses reveal that compound 1 is a discrete neutral binuclear molecule, while compound 2 is a two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymer. The metal ions in these compounds are well isolated, with an intramolecular Co2+⋯Co2+ distance of 9.170 Å for 1 and Mn2+⋯Mn2+ separation of 10.984 and 11.164 Å for 2 due to the bulk tetracarboxylic linker. This isolation gives rise to a single-ion magnetism origin of the compounds. Magnetic studies reveal a large zero-field splitting parameter D of 82.6 cm-1 for 1, while a very small D of 0.42 cm-1 was observed for 2. Interestingly, dynamic ac magnetic measurements exhibited slow magnetic relaxation under the external dc field of the two compounds, revealing the field-supported single-ion magnet (SIM) of 1 and 2. The detailed theoretical calculations were further applied to understand the electronic structures, magnetic anisotropy, and relaxation dynamics in 1 and 2. Combined with our recently reported compound (Eur. J. Inorg. Chem., 2022, e202200354), the foregoing results provide not only a rare binuclear cobalt(II) SIM and the first 2D manganese(II) SIM coordination polymer but also a bipyridine-tetracarboxylic ligand approach toward novel SIMs.
