ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore the association between internet use and healthy lifestyles in urban adults. Methods: From May to August, 2022, a face-to-face questionnaire survey was conducted in residents aged 18-64 years selected in the urban area of Hangzhou by integrated cluster stratified random sampling and Kish grid method. The information about internet use included the internet use time in the past 7 days and 12 kinds of internet use contents. Using factor analysis and K-means clustering, three types of internet use were summarized, i.e. general type, video game type and working/learning type. Healthy lifestyles were defined as active physical activity, healthy diet habit, non-smoking, non-drinking, healthy weight, and healthy waist circumference. The correlations between internet use and healthy lifestyles were evaluated by using binary logistic regression and multinomial logistic regression analyses. Results: A total of 1 624 participants were included. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, the longer internet use time group (≥8.5 h/d) was less likely to have healthy weight (OR=0.59, 95%CI:0.41-0.85) and 5-6 healthy lifestyles (OR=0.55, 95%CI: 0.32-0.96) compared with those with shorter internet use time group (<2.5 h/d). For different types of internet use, it was found that compared with working/learning type group, the general type group was less likely to have healthy diet habits (OR=0.63, 95%CI: 0.46-0.86), non-drinking (OR=0.68, 95%CI: 0.47-0.99), healthy waist circumference (OR=0.59, 95%CI: 0.42-0.84) and 5-6 healthy lifestyles (OR=0.40, 95%CI: 0.23-0.69), the video game type group was less likely to have active physical activity (OR=0.73, 95%CI: 0.55-0.97) and healthy diet habits (OR=0.79, 95%CI: 0.62-0.99). Conclusion: Too long internet use (≥8.5 h/d), general type and video game type of internet use were associated with unhealthy lifestyles.

ABSTRACT

Sequence variability in three mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) regions, namely cytochrome c oxidase subunit 3 (cox3), NADH dehydrogenase subunits 1 and 4 (nad1 and nad4) in Spirometra erinaceieuropaei spargana from different geographical regions in China was examined. A portion of each of the cox3 (pcox3), nad1 (pnad1) and nad4 genes (pnad4) were amplified separately from individual S. erinaceieuropaei spargana by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Representative amplicons were subjected to sequencing in order to estimate sequence variability. The sequences of pcox3, pnad1 and pnad4 were 541, 607 and 847 bp in length, respectively. The A+T contents of the sequences were 68.39-68.76% (pcox3), 63.76-64.91% (pnad1) and 67.18-67.77% (pnad4), respectively, while the intra-specific sequence variations within each of the S. erinaceieuropaei spargana were 0-1.5% for pcox3, 0-2.8% for pnad1 and 0-2.7% for pnad4. Phylogenetic analysis using neighbour joining (NJ), maximum likelihood (ML) and maximum parsimony (MP) methods, indicated that all the spargana isolates in Hunan Province represented S. erinaceieuropaei. These findings demonstrated clearly the usefulness of the three mtDNA sequences for population genetics studies of S. erinaceieuropaei spargana of human and animal health significance.

ABSTRACT

A polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon degrading bacterium isolated from oil-polluted soil was identified as Microbacterium sp. F10a based on 16S rDNA gene sequence analysis. Plant growth promoting characteristics of the strain, degradation rate of phenanthrene and pyrene, and cell surface hydrophobicity characteristics of the strain were further characterized. The strain was also evaluated for promoting the growth of wheat and phenanthrene and pyrene removal from soil artificially contaminated with a mixture of phenanthrene (200 mg.kg-1) and pyrene (150 mg.kg-1) in pot experiments. The strain had the plant growth promoting characteristics of producing indole acetic acid, siderophore, and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase activity and solubilizing inorganic phosphate. The strain also has a cell surface hydrophobicity that could increase the aqueous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon solubility. High-performance liquid chromatographic analysis showed that the degradation rates of phenanthrene (50 mg.L-1) and pyrene (20 mg.L-1) were 98% and 65%, respectively, under 28 degrees C after 7 days. Inoculation with the strain was found to significantly increase (p < 0.05) the growth of wheat and phenanthrene and pyrene removal in the unplanted or planted soils in a low-temperature environment. There were no significant differences in culturable bacterial numbers between live bacterial inoculation and dead bacterial inoculation controls in the unplanted and planted soils. However, the numbers of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon degrading bacteria were significantly greater in the inoculated planted or unplanted soils compared with the dead bacterial inoculation controls.
