ABSTRACT

Adult Thai Setaria worms collected from cattle which were bred, housed and slaughtered in Thailand were morphologically identified as Setaria digitata. Furthermore, in sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) adult Thai S. digitata had the same protein profiles as adult Japanese S. digitata, but did not possess the protein with a molecular size of 69 kDa which was confirmed in adult S. marshalli. In addition, there were no differences in the protein profiles between male and female S. digitata. In point of the distribution pattern of the proteins ranging from 73 to 64 kDa revealed by 2D-PAGE, there were no differences between Thai and Japanese S. digitata, and between male and female worms of the species.

ABSTRACT

Indolo[3,2-b]quinoline derivatives (1b-i) with a methyl group at each possible position have been synthesized. The 1-methyl (1b) and 9-methyl (1i) derivatives were inactive, but the 3-methyl (1d), 4-methyl (1e), and 6-methyl (1f) derivatives exhibited high treatment/control (T/C) value and cure rates against leukemia P388 in mice. These results indicated that modification of indolo[3,2-b]quinoline derivatives at 3, 4, and 6 positions may be useful approach for lead optimization.

ABSTRACT

Ten calves harboring microfilariae (Mf) were injected with ivermectin at a single dose of 200 micrograms/kg body weight. Thereafter, the number of calves harboring Mf was gradually reduced to 7, 2 and 0 by 1, 4 and 12 weeks, respectively and remained negative for microfilariae by 16 weeks after injection. Furthermore, none of 221 goats and sheep injected twice with ivermectin at a dose of 200 micrograms/kg body weight developed setariosis while 17 out of 303 non-injected animals suffered from that disease. Therefore, ivermectin was much effective for the eradication of Mf in calves and the prevention of setariosis in sheep and goats.

ABSTRACT

Recently, it has been known that the aminosidine has marked anthelmintic efficacy against tapeworm. In this investigation, aminosidine was used for treating 14 cases with Ciphyllobothrium latum infection and 5 cases with Taenia saginata infection. Aminosidine was administered orally in a single dose of 50 mg/kg, followed by a purge after the treatment. Fourteen patients with D. latum infection and 5 patients with T. saginata infection expelled long strobila in all cases. Although only 7 scolices of 18 worms of D. latum were found in the stool and no scolex of T. saginata was found, follow-up examination for a long period showed no evidence of remaining infection with one exception of D. latum. Mild nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain were observed in only one of 19 cases given aminosidine. But in the other 18 cases, no side effects were encountered. It was concluded that aminosidine is safe, effective therapeutic agent for the treatment of cestodiasis in man.

ABSTRACT

A case of hyperchloremic acidosis in an infant with imperforate anus and rectourethral fistula, showing lethargy, tachypnea, vomiting, and dehydration, is reported. Surgical correction by abdominoperineal pull-through and division of the rectourethral fistula was performed after doing a cystocutaneostomy to eliminate the diversion of urine into the rectum.
