ABSTRACT

Gold nanorods (AuNRs) are rod-shaped nanoparticles (NPs) with special optical properties that allow their application in several areas including photothermal therapy, diagnosis, drug and gene delivery, cellular imaging, and biosensors. Their high potential for many applications increases the possibility of release in aquatic environments, which can cause risks to organisms. In this study, we evaluated toxic effects of AuNRs on cladoceran and fish (Ceriodaphnia dubia and Danio rerio) and their recovery after post-exposure periods. The EC50 of 0.03 mg L-1 was found for C. dubia in the acute exposure. There was a significant decrease in the number of neonates produced and in the filtration rate of C. dubia after sub-lethal exposure to AuNRs. The toxic mechanism of these NPs to cladocerans was attributed to increases in the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. After 4 h of recovery in clean medium, C. dubia were able to reestablish the filtration rate. Enzymatic biomarkers for D. rerio showed significant increases in the activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and lipid peroxidation after sub-lethal exposure to AuNRs. These biomarkers were recovered after 168 h in clean water. These results are pivotal on the comprehension of AuNR toxicity to aquatic organisms and are useful in assessing this novel nanomaterial impacts on aquatic biota.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this review was to compile evidence and understand chia seed effects on unbalanced diet animal studies and the molecular mechanisms on metabolic biomarker modulation. A systematic review was conducted in electronic databases, following PRISMA recommendations. Risk of bias and quality was assessed using SYRCLE toll and ARRIVE guidelines. Seventeen articles were included. Throughout the studies, chia's main effects are associated with AMPK modulation: improvement of glucose and insulin tolerance, lipogenesis, antioxidant activity, and inflammation. Details about randomization and allocation concealment were insufficient, as well as information about blind protocols. Sample size, chia dose, and number of animals evaluated for each parameter were found to be lacking information among the studies. Based on experimental study data, chia has bioactive potential, and its daily consumption may reduce the risk of chronic disease development, mainly due to the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, and hypolipidemic effects of the seed. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The consumption of chia seeds may improve lipid profile, insulin and glucose tolerance, and reduce risk of cardiovascular disease. Whole seed or its oil presents positive effect, but the effects of chia oil can act faster than the seed.

ABSTRACT

Inappropriate food behavior contributes to obesity and leads to vitamin deficiency. This review discusses the nutritional status of water- and fat-soluble vitamins in obese subjects. We verified that most vitamins are deficient in obese individuals, especially the fat-soluble vitamins, folic acid, vitamin B12 and vitamin C. However, some vitamins have been less evaluated in cases of obesity. The adipose tissue is considered a metabolic and endocrine organ, which in excess leads to changes in body homeostasis, as well as vitamin deficiency which can aggravate the pathological state. Therefore, the evaluation of vitamin status is of fundamental importance in obese individuals.

ABSTRACT

An actinobacterial strain, designated SO9-6, was isolated from a copper iron sulfide mineral. The organism is Gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic, and coccoid. Chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic properties were consistent with its classification in the genus Kocuria. Here, we report the first draft genome sequence of Kocuria marina SO9-6 under accession JROM00000000 (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nuccore/725823918), which provides insights for heavy metal bioremediation and production of compounds of biotechnological interest.
