ABSTRACT

Due to the high density of chickens housed within the same space in aviaries, a large volume of organic matter accumulates on the floor. This large supply of available resources allows the development of arthropods, including organisms that affect poultry productivity and health. This study aimed to evaluate the composition of the mite community associated with organic matter in poultry houses with different rearing systems and the verification of potential predators to be evaluated in clean management techniques, such as biological control. The study was carried out in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) in a total of six poultry houses, two of the 'Californian' system (SIG) and four of the 'cage free' system (SIF). In total, 839,459 specimens were collected, of which 358,044 were collected from SIF and 481,415 specimens from SIG. Fifty-two species/morphospecies were found and we observed a grouping of aviaries from the same rearing model. Species of medical veterinary importance were found, such as Dermanyssus gallinae, Megninia ginglymura, Ornithonyssus sylviarum and Tyrophagus putrescentiae. The results demonstrate that the organic matter present in the aviaries harbors a high diversity of mites of medical-veterinary importance and predators, which are influenced by the rearing system.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Approximately 10% of breast cancer cases are attibutable to germinative mutations in susceptibility genes, including BRCA1, BRCA2 and others. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) recommends screening women with breast cancer for mutations in BRCA1/2 in defined scenarios. However, these genetic tests are unavailable at the Brazilian Public Health System (SUS). Objective: This study aimed to characterize women with breast cancer and define the criteria for performing BRCA1/2 test. Method: Quantitative, descriptive, analytic, and retrospective study. Medical records of women diagnosed by SUS with breast cancer between January 2016 and December 2018 were analyzed through the software JAMOVI (version 2.3 - 2022). Results: A total of 245 women were diagnosed. According to NCCN guidelines, 97 women met the criteria for performing BRCA1/2 test, with mean age of 47 years old, predominantly white (90,7%), with comorbidities (55.6%), premenopausal (59.8%), diagnosed in early stages 0 - IIb (68.2%) and 48.4% had familial history of breast cancer. Most frequent histology and molecular subtype was invasive ductal carcinoma (87.2%) and luminal type (59.8%). Conclusion: A significant number of women diagnosed by SUS had indication for BRCA1/2 test. These women are younger, had fewer comorbidities, not menopausal, and differ in terms of the molecular subtype when compared with those without indication for performing the test


Introdução: Aproximadamente 10% dos casos de câncer de mama são atribuíveis a mutações germinativas em genes de suscetibilidade, incluindo BRCA1 e BRCA2. A National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) recomenda a triagem de mulheres com câncer de mama para mutações em BRCA1/2 em cenários definidos. No entanto, esses testes genéticos não estão disponíveis no Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS). Objetivo: Caracterizar as mulheres com câncer de mama e definir os critérios para realização do teste BRCA1/2. Método: Estudo quantitativo, descritivo, analítico e retrospectivo. Foram analisadosprontuários de mulheres com diagnóstico de câncer de mama pelo SUS entre janeiro de 2016 e dezembro de 2018, por meio do software JAMOVI (versão 2.3 - 2022). Resultados: Foram diagnosticadas 245 mulheres. De acordo com as diretrizes da NCCN, 97 mulheres atenderam aos critérios para realizar o teste BRCA1/2, com idade média de 47 anos, predominantemente brancas (90,7%), com comorbidades (55,6%), na pré-menopausa (59,8%), diagnosticadas nos estágios iniciais 0 - IIb (68, 2%), e 48,4% tinham histórico familiar de câncer de mama. A histologia e o subtipo molecular mais frequentes foram carcinoma ductal invasivo (87,2%) e tipo luminal (59,8%). Conclusão: Considerando os critérios da NCCN, um número significativo de mulheres diagnosticadas pelo SUS teve indicação para realização do teste BRCA1/2. Essas mulheres são mais jovens, têm menos comorbidades, estão em período pré-menopausa mais frequentemente e diferem quanto ao subtipo molecular quando comparadas àquelas sem indicação de realização do exame. La National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) recomienda la detección de mutaciones BRCA1/2 en mujeres con cáncer de mama en entornos definidos. Sin embargo, estas pruebas genéticas no están disponibles en el Sistema Único de Salud (SUS). Objetivo: Caracterizar mujeres con cáncer de mama y definir los criterios para la realización de la prueba BRCA1/2. Método: Estudio cuantitativo, descriptivo, analítico y retrospectivo. Las historias clínicas de las mujeres diagnosticadas con cáncer de mama entre enero de 2016 y diciembre de 2018, usuarias del SUS, fueron analizadas mediante el software JAMOVI (versión 2.3 - 2022). Resultados: 245 mujeres fueron diagnosticadas. Según las pautas de NCCN, 97 mujeres cumplieron con los criterios para someterse a la prueba BRCA1/2. Las mujeres con indicación para la prueba tenían un promedio de edad de 47 años, eran predominantemente blancas (90,7%), con comorbilidades (55,6%), premenopáusicas (59,8%), diagnosticadas en estadios tempranos 0 - IIb (68,2%) y 48,4% tenía antecedentes familiares de cáncer de mama. Los subtipos histológicos y moleculares más frecuentes fueron el carcinoma ductal invasivo (87,2%) y el tipo luminal (59,8%). Conclusión: Considerando los criterios de la NCCN, un número significativo de mujeres, usuarias del SUS, fueron designadas para hacer la prueba BRCA1/2. Estas mujeres son más jóvenes, tienen menos comorbilidades, están en el periodo de la premenopausia con mayor frecuencia y difieren en el subtipo molecular en comparación con aquellas sin orden de realizarse la prueba

ABSTRACT

The search for improvements in the poultry production chain and for increased egg productivity have grown significantly. However, intensive production with or by using of confinement systems negatively affect the welfare of animals and is favoring the appearance of harmful ectoparasites in production. Due to differences in the existing management systems, (e.g. Californian and cage-free systems) and given the importance of the poultry industry in the international market, the aim of the present study was: (1) to compare mite community between SIG (Intensive system - cage: Californian) and SIF (Intensive system - free: cage free); (2) egg-laying systems to analyze how the abundances of the ectoparasites Dermanyssus gallinae, Megninia ginlgymura, and Ornithonyssus sylviarum are affected by these egg-laying models; (3) to evaluate the association between the functional diversity found in traps, organic matter, and feathers in both systems; and finally, (4) to analyze how abiotic factors (e.g. humidity, temperature at sampling) affect mite community composition inside each model. A total of 860,571 mites were sampled, belonging to 59 taxa from six functional groups. Mite composition in the SIF system was different from the SIG system, while their variations in dispersion homogeneity were quite similar to each other. Although taxonomic composition is different between them, they are quite similar when clustered according to functional diversity. The variables 'humidity' and 'temperature' were not determining factors for the appearance of species. The species that most contributed for distinguishing the models were: M. ginlgymura, Dermatophagoides farinae, D. gallinae, Tyrophagus putrescentiae, O. sylviarum, Blattisocius keegani, Glycyphagus sp., Acotyledon sp., and Cheyletus malaccensis, respectively. Dermanyssus gallinae was strongly associated with the Californian model. Two taxa were highly correlated with cloaca, neck, dorsum, and inner wings; variations in relative air humidity also affected M. ginlgymura and O. sylviarum populations. Organic matter had a high abundance of predatory mites with potential for controlling mites of sanitary importance in the poultry chain.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to identify mite fauna associated with soybean crops and to report new species of the Monsoy 8349 IPRO variety in the municipality of Luís Eduardo Magalhães, western region of Bahia. Samplings were performed in an area with transgenic soybeans, subdivided into three treatments: T01, with no use of agricultural pesticides; T02, complete package of pesticides, except for acaricides; and T03, complete package of pesticides including acaricides. Twenty plants were selected per treatment at each sampling; one apical, one median, and one basal leaf were collected from each plant, totaling 60 leaves per treatment. A total of 1,292 mites were found, belonging to three families, five genera, and six species. The major phytophagous mite species found were Mononychellus planki McGregor and Tetranychus urticae Koch, while the major predatory mites found were Neoseiulus transversus Denmark & Muma and Euseius concordis Chant.

ABSTRACT

SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2) affects the central nervous system (CNS), which is shown in a significant number of patients with neurological events. In this study, an updated literature review was carried out regarding neurological disorders in COVID-19. Neurological symptoms are more common in patients with severe infection according to their respiratory status and divided into three categories: (1) CNS manifestations; (2) cranial and peripheral nervous system manifestations; and (3) skeletal muscle injury manifestations. Patients with pre-existing cerebrovascular disease are at a higher risk of admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) and mortality. The neurological manifestations associated with COVID-19 are of great importance, but when life-threatening abnormal vital signs occur in severely ill COVID-19 patients, neurological problems are usually not considered. It is crucial to search for new treatments for brain damage, as well as for alternative therapies that recover the damaged brain and reduce the inflammatory response and its consequences for other organs. In addition, there is a need to diagnose these manifestations as early as possible to limit long-term consequences. Therefore, much research is needed to explain the involvement of SARS-CoV-2 causing these neurological symptoms because scientists know zero about it.

ABSTRACT

Members of the Tydeidae are cosmopolitan, soft-bodied, striated or reticulated mites that are reported to be mainly phytophages, mycophages, pollenophages, insect parasites or scavengers. This catalogue includes 328 species belonging to 30 genera, and their distributions and type habitat. Until now, Brachytydeus comprises the largest number of species with 200, followed by Tydeus, with 50 species, and Pretydeus and Pseudolorryia, with 12 species each. An updated list of the Tydeidae (Acari: Prostigmata), a world key to the species and data on the zoogeographical distribution of the species are presented.

The resistance of some species of Anopheles to chemical insecticides is spreading quickly throughout the world and has hindered the actions of prevention and control of malaria. The main mechanism responsible for resistance in these insects appears to be the target site known as knock-down resistance (kdr), which causes mutations in the sodium channel. Even so, many countries have made significant progress in the prevention of malaria, focusing largely on vector control through long-lasting insecticide nets (LLINs), indoor residual spraying and (IRS) of insecticides. The objective of this review is to contribute with information on the more applied insecticides for the control of the main vectors of malaria, its effects, and the different mechanisms of resistance. Currently it is necessary to look for others alternatives, e.g. biological control and products derived from plants and fungi, by using other organisms as a possible regulator of the populations of malaria vectors in critical outbreaks.

Resumo A resistência de algumas espécies de Anopheles a inseticidas químicos está se espalhando rapidamente por todo o mundo e tem dificultado as ações de prevenção e controle da malária. O principal mecanismo responsável pela resistência nestes insetos parece ser o sítio-alvo conhecido como resistência knock-down resistance (kdr), que causa mutações no canal de sódio. Mesmo assim, muitos países fizeram progressos significativos na prevenção da malária, concentrando-se em grande parte no controle do vetor através redes inseticidas de longa duração (RILD), e de pulverização residual interna (PRI) de inseticidas. O objetivo desta revisão é contribuir com informações sobre os inseticidas mais aplicados para o controle dos principais vetores da malária, seus efeitos, e os diferentes mecanismos de resistências. Atualmente é necessário olhar para outras alternativas, como por exemplo, controle biológico e produtos derivados de plantas e fungos, pela utilização de outros organismos como um possível regulador de populações de vetores da malária em surtos críticos.

ABSTRACT

We report the finding of a female brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Acari: Ixodidae) on the scalp of a male patient inPorto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Human parasitism by this tick is rare and has seldomly been reported in the literature, despite its recognized importance since it can act as a vector of Rickettsia rickettsii, the agent of spotted fever.

ABSTRACT

We herein report human dermatitis caused by the tropical fowl mite Ornithonyssus bursa (Berlese). The cases occurred in an apartment in a residential district of Porto Alegre City, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, where three members of the same family presented with pruritic lesions on the arms and legs. On inspecting the bathroom, several mites measuring approximately 1.0mm in length were observed coming from a nest of Rufous Hornero, Furnarius rufus (Gmelin). This is the first report of O. bursa in the urban area of Porto Alegre City, from a nest of F. rufus that bites humans.
