ABSTRACT

The present research investigates the dynamics and underlying causes contributing to the exceptional intensity of Super Cyclonic Storm (SuCS) Amphan (16th to 21st May 2020) over the Bay of Bengal (BoB), as well as its impact on aerosol redistribution along the four cities of eastern coast and north-eastern India. Notably, the SuCS was formed during the first phase of the COVID-19 lockdown in India, giving it a unique aspect of study and analysis. Our analysis based on 30 years of climatology data from Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 (MERRA-2) reanalysis reveals 'positive' monthly anomalous winds (0.8 to 1.6 m/s) prevailed over the central BoB for May 2020. The present study further found the evolution of 'barrier layer thickness'(BLT) leading up to landfall, noting a thickening trend from 8 to 3 days before landfall, contributing to maintaining warmer sea surface temperatures near the coast. Additionally, utilizing European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), reanalysis version-5 (ERA-5) data, a mean positive sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly of 0.8 to 1 °C was observed 'before' cyclone period (10-15 May 2020) near the cyclogenesis point. A detailed examination of Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) vertical cross-section plots during the cyclone's intensification stage reveals the presence of high-altitude clouds composed primarily of ice crystals. Further, analysis also indicates that the cyclone transported Sea-salt PM2.5 aerosols from the ocean, dispersing them in the landfall region.The aerosol optical Depth (AOD) data obtained from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) 'Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES)' mission and MERRA-2 were also analysed, revealing that the cyclone redistributed aerosols over the Bengal basin region (mainly over 'Kolkata') and three other nearby cities along the track of the cyclone (i.e., Bhubaneswar (Odisha) Agartala (Tripura) and Shillong (Meghalaya) respectively).

ABSTRACT

Neurodegenerative diseases (amyloid diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's), stemming from protein misfolding and aggregation, encompass a spectrum of disorders with severe systemic implications. Timely detection is pivotal in managing these diseases owing to their significant impact on organ function and high mortality rates. The diverse array of amyloid disorders, spanning localized and systemic manifestations, underscores the complexity of these conditions and highlights the need for advanced detection methods. Traditional approaches have focused on identifying biomarkers using imaging techniques (PET and MRI) or invasive procedures. However, recent efforts have focused on the use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a versatile class of materials known for their unique properties, in revolutionizing amyloid disease detection. The high porosity, customizable structures, and biocompatibility of MOFs enable their integration with biomolecules, laying the groundwork for highly sensitive and specific biosensors. These sensors have been employed using electrochemical and photophysical techniques that target amyloid species under neurodegenerative conditions. The adaptability of MOFs allows for the precise detection and quantification of amyloid proteins, offering potential advancements in early diagnosis and disease management. This review article delves into how MOFs contribute to detecting amyloid diseases by categorizing their uses based on different sensing methods, such as electrochemical (EC), electrochemiluminescence (ECL), fluorescence, Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET), up-conversion luminescence resonance energy transfer (ULRET), and photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing. The drawbacks of MOF biosensors and the challenges encountered in the field are also briefly explored from our perspective.

ABSTRACT

Giant cell tumor (GCT) of the proximal femur poses various challenges in its management and recurrence. We present a rare case of GCT of proximal femur in which recurrence and coxa vara deformity were encountered after index surgery. Management of the recurrence was done with intramedullary fixation with extended curettage and bone grafting. Different aspects of management such as the role of defect size, adjuvants, bone cement/bone graft, implants, and bisphosphonates have been highlighted in this article.

ABSTRACT

We are describing a case report of a morbidly obese patient (body mass index 41) in his mid-40s with Young and Burgess Anteroposterior Compression type II injury (AO Foundation/Orthopaedic Trauma Association type B1.2) managed by symphyseal plating. Morbid obesity made working at a depth very difficult; hence, we adopted a novel 'wire-ramp plate-sliding method'. In this method, two strong sturdy K-wires inserted through the medial-most plate holes into the pubis acted as a ramp over which the plate was pushed/slid distally. During this manoeuvre, the K-wires passing through the plate holes were used as a reduction tool. The patient also had a wedge fracture of the distal femoral shaft which was managed by retrograde femoral nailing. At 1-year follow-up, the pelvic continuity is maintained and the fracture has united. The patient is able to do full weight-bearing and is back to his normal life.

ABSTRACT

Background The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is a standard surgery in patients with instability of the knee caused by ACL insufficiency. Several differential procedures using grafts and implants such as loops, buttons, and screws have been described. This study aimed to assess the functional outcomes of ACL reconstruction surgery using titanium adjustable loop buttons and poly-L-co-DL-lactic acid-beta tricalcium phosphate (PLDLA-bTCP) interference screws. Methodology This was a retrospective, observational, single-center, and clinical study. A total of 42 patients who underwent ACL reconstruction at a tertiary trauma center in northern India between 2018 and 2022 were recruited. Data including demographics, details of the injury, surgery, implants, and surgical outcomes were collected from the patients' medical records. Further, post-surgery details such as re-injury, adverse events, International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) profiles, and Lysholm knee score were recorded from the enrolled patients through a telephonic follow-up. Pain score and Tegner activity scale were used to compare the knee status before and after surgery. Results At the time of surgery, the mean age of the recruited patients was 31.1 ± 8.8 years, with a male preponderance of 93%. About 57% of patients had left knee injuries. The common symptoms were instability (67%), pain (62%), swelling (14%), and giving away (5%). During surgery, titanium adjustable loop button and PLDLA-bTCP interference screw implants were used in all patients. The mean follow-up time was 21.2 ± 14.2 months. Based on patient responses, the mean IKDC and Lysholm scores were found to be 54.02 ± 5.93 and 94.4 ± 4.73, respectively. Further, the proportion of patients reporting pain decreased from 62% before surgery to 21% after surgery. The mean Tegner score revealed a significant increase in the activity levels of the patients post-surgery compared to pre-surgery (p < 0.05). Lastly, no adverse events or re-injuries were reported in any of the patients during follow-up. Conclusions Our findings revealed a significant improvement in Tegner activity levels and pain scores after surgery. In addition, patient-reported IKDC and Lysholm scores fell under the category of good knee status and function, suggesting a satisfactory functional outcome of ACL reconstruction. Hence, titanium adjustable loop and PLDLA-bTCP interference screws may be a good choice of implants for successful ACL reconstruction surgery.

ABSTRACT

The current research focuses on the use of different simulation techniques in the future prediction of the crucial aerosol optical properties over the highly polluted Indo-Gangetic Basin in the northern part of India. The time series model was used to make an accurate forecast of aerosol optical depth (AOD) and angstrom exponent (AE), and the statistical variability of both cases was compared in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the model (training and validation). For this, different models were used to simulate the monthly average AOD and AE over Jaipur, Kanpur and Ballia during the period from 2003 to 2018. Further, the study was aimed to construct a comparative model that will be used for time series statistical analysis of MODIS-derived AOD550 and AE412-470. This will provide a more comprehensive information about the levels of AOD and AE that will exist in the future. To test the validity and applicability of the developed models, root-mean-square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), mean absolute percent error (MAPE), fractional bias (FB), and Pearson coefficient (r) were used to show adequate accuracy in model performance. From the observation, the monthly mean values of AOD and AE were found to be nearly similar at Kanpur and Ballia (0.62 and 1.26) and different at Jaipur (0.25 and 1.14). Jaipur indicates that during the pre-monsoon season, the AOD mean value was found to be highest (0.32 ± 0.15), while Kanpur and Ballia display higher AOD mean values during the winter season (0.72 ± 0.26 and 0.83 ± 0.32, respectively). Among the different methods, the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model was found to be the best-suited model for AOD prediction at Ballia based on fitted error (RMSE (0.22), MAE (0.15), MAPE (24.55), FB (0.05)) and Pearson coefficient r (0.83). However, for AE, best prediction was found at Kanpur based on RMSE (0.24), MAE (0.21), MAPE (22.54), FB (-0.09) and Pearson coefficient r (0.82).

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of loxapine on peripheral dopamine D2-like and serotonin receptor binding and on psychotic symptoms. PATIENTS: Patients (n = 24) meeting the diagnostic criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision, for schizophrenia were selected from an outpatient clinic (age range 18-70 yr). METHODS: Patients were given loxapine (dose determined by a physician) for a period of 12 weeks. There were clinic visits at before treatment began and at 6 weeks and 12 weeks of treatment. Scores on a variety of efficacy and safety scales were recorded at each visit, and blood was drawn for receptor assays. RESULTS: Patients showed significant improvement on most psychiatric assessment scales after 6 and 12 weeks of treatment with loxapine, and both lymphocyte D2-like and 5-HTL2A platelet receptor binding were down-regulated after 6 and 12 weeks. The degree of receptor down-regulation was not significantly correlated with improvements in psychotic symptoms, however. CONCLUSION: Loxapine down-regulated both lymphocyte D2-like and platelet 5-HT2A receptors to the same extent, suggesting that both receptors are involved in the mechanism of action of loxapine in patients with schizophrenia.
