ABSTRACT

The research field of magnetic frustration is dominated by triangle-based lattices but exotic phenomena can also be observed in pentagonal networks. A peculiar noncollinear magnetic order is indeed known to be stabilized in Bi_{2}Fe_{4}O_{9} materializing a Cairo pentagonal lattice. We present the spin wave excitations in the magnetically ordered state, obtained by inelastic neutron scattering. They reveal an unconventional excited state related to local precession of pairs of spins. The magnetic excitations are then modeled to determine the superexchange interactions for which the frustration is indeed at the origin of the spin arrangement. This analysis unveils a hierarchy in the interactions, leading to a paramagnetic state (close to the Néel temperature) constituted of strongly coupled dimers separated by much less correlated spins. This produces two types of response to an applied magnetic field associated with the two nonequivalent Fe sites, as observed in the magnetization distributions obtained using polarized neutrons.

ABSTRACT

Neutron diffraction studies performed on the solid solution of (BiFeO(3))(1-x)(PbTiO(3))(x) reveal a mixture of two nanoscale phases with different crystal structures: a rhombohedral BiFeO(3)-based phase and a tetragonal PbTiO3-based phase. The ratio of Fe(3)+ and Ti(4)+ ions in the two phases is practically constant; only the proportion of the phases changes. The magnetic moments in the BiFeO(3)-based phase, in contrast to BiFeO(3), deviate from the basal plane. The temperature evolutions of the spin components along the hexagonal axis and within the perpendicular plane are different, leading to a spin re-orientation transition. The antiferromagnetic order in the PbTiO(3)-based phase corresponds to a simple structure with the propagation vector (1/2, 1/2, 1/2). The temperature dependence of the antiferromagnetic moment in the tetragonal phase at x = 0.5 indicates a canted antiferromagnetic order and a net ferromagnetic moment. A strong magnetic coupling between the two constituting phases due to the nanoscale character of the phases and well-developed interface between nanoparticles has been observed. The system of (BiFeO(3))(1-x)(PbTiO(3))(x) demonstrates an interesting scenario, where the proximity effects in the unstable system play a crucial role in the appearance of the unusual magnetic properties.

ABSTRACT

The ac susceptibility and magnetization curves of a glued Dy(2)O(3) powder sample are measured by an ac susceptometer and a dc superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer, both of which have been calibrated previously. It is shown that the magnetic moment of the paramagnetic sample as a function of field and temperature may be accurately expressed by a combination of the Curie-Weiss law and the Langevin function at T > 45 K with three adjusting parameters, so that the dc magnetization curves and the magnitude and phase of ac susceptibility at different values of dc bias field measured by any magnetometer can be calibrated by using Dy(2)O(3) as a standard. The expressions are empirical and cannot be justified in the entire field and temperature range by existing theories of paramagnetism. Below 10 K, indication of approaching a possible phase transition is found. It is shown that pure Dy(2)O(3) powder may be used as a primary standard, with susceptibility [13.28(T + 17)](-1) emu/Oe/g at T > 50 K and H < 10 kOe, in consistency with the Curie-Weiss law and the quantum mechanical theory of paramagnetism.

ABSTRACT

Single crystals of the mixed valence compound Pb3Ni1.5Mn5.5O15 were successfully grown. Polarized Raman spectroscopy revealed that they belong to the point group D(3d), in accordance with single-crystal x-ray diffraction data which were refined within the trigonal space group P3c1 (No. 165), with lattice parameters a = 9.941(3) Å and c = 13.543(3) Å. Strongly anisotropic long range magnetic order is established below 65 K.

ABSTRACT

We demonstrate that the magnetization of a ferromagnet in contact with an antiferromagnetic multiferroic (LuMnO(3)) can be speedily reversed by electric-field pulsing, and the sign of the magnetic exchange bias can switch and recover isothermally. As LuMnO(3) is not ferroelastic, our data conclusively show that this switching is not mediated by strain effects but is a unique electric-field driven decoupling of the ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic domain walls. Their distinct dynamics are essential for the observed magnetic switching.

ABSTRACT

A high-quality low-temperature ac susceptometer is calibrated by comparing the measured ac susceptibility of a copper cylinder with its eddy-current ac susceptibility accurately calculated. Different from conventional calibration techniques that compare the measured results with the known property of a standard sample at certain fixed temperature T, field amplitude H(m), and frequency f, to get a magnitude correction factor, here, the electromagnetic properties of the copper cylinder are unknown and are determined during the calibration of the ac susceptometer in the entire T, H(m), and f range. It is shown that the maximum magnitude error and the maximum phase error of the susceptometer are less than 0.7% and 0.3 degrees, respectively, in the region T=5-300 K and f=111-1111 Hz at H(m)=800 A/m, after a magnitude correction by a constant factor as done in a conventional calibration. However, the magnitude and phase errors can reach 2% and 4.3 degrees at 10,000 and 11 Hz, respectively. Since the errors are reproducible, a large portion of them may be further corrected after a calibration, the procedure for which is given. Conceptual discussions concerning the error sources, comparison with other calibration methods, and applications of ac susceptibility techniques are presented.

ABSTRACT

The Fe3+ lattice in the Bi2Fe4O9 compound is found to materialize the first analogue of a magnetic pentagonal lattice. Because of its odd number of bonds per elemental brick, this lattice, subject to first neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions, is prone to geometric frustration. The Bi2Fe4O9 magnetic properties have been investigated by macroscopic magnetic measurements and neutron diffraction. The observed noncollinear magnetic arrangement is related to the one stabilized on a perfect tiling as obtained from a mean field analysis with direct space magnetic configuration calculations. The peculiarity of this structure arises from the complex connectivity of the pentagonal lattice, a novel feature compared to the well-known case of triangle-based lattices.

ABSTRACT

Three novel stable Pt(III) complexes with distorted octahedral structure and (dz2)1 ground state have been obtained in the course of Pt(II)-hematoporphyrin IX ((7,12-bis(1-hydroxyethyl)-3,8,13,17-tetramethyl-21H-23H-porphyn-2,18-dipropionic acid), Hp) interaction in alkaline aqueous medium and aerobic conditions. A redox interaction also takes place together with the complexation process leading to the formation of Pt(III) species and organic radicals. The processes in the reaction system and the structure of the complexes formed cis-[Pt(III)(NH3)2(Hp-3H)(H2O)2]H2O1, [Pt(III)(Hp-3H)(H2O)2]H2O2, and [Pt((O,O)Hp-2H)Cl(H2O)3] 3, were studied by UV-Vis, IR, EPR and XPS spectra, thermal (TGS, DSC), potentiometric and magnetic methods. The newly synthesized complexes show promising cytotoxic activity comparable with that of cis-platin in in vitro tests against a panel of human leukemia cell lines. The observed cytotoxicity of the complex 2 against SKW-3 cells (KE-37 derivative) is due to induction of cell death through apoptosis.

ABSTRACT

The magnetic properties of ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic Co-CoO core-shell nanoparticles are investigated as a function of the in-plane coverage density from 3.5% to 15%. The superparamagnetic blocking temperature, the coercivity, and the bias field radically increase with increasing coverage. This behavior cannot be attributed to the overall interactions between cores. Rather, it can be semiquantitatively understood by assuming that the shells of isolated core-shell nanoparticles have strongly degraded magnetic properties, which are rapidly recovered as nanoparticles come into contact.

ABSTRACT

The magnetic exchange between epitaxial thin films of the multiferroic (antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric) hexagonal YMnO3 oxide and a soft ferromagnetic (FM) layer is used to couple the magnetic response of the FM layer to the magnetic state of the antiferromagnetic one. We will show that biasing the ferroelectric YMnO3 layer by an electric field allows control of the magnetic exchange bias and subsequently the magnetotransport properties of the FM layer. This finding may contribute to paving the way towards a new generation of electric-field controlled spintronic devices.
