Abstract Objective to analyze the beginning of the student movement, through the creation of the Academic Center of the School of Nursing of Ribeirão Preto, a representative body of the student segment, and the actions developed during the first board. Method study from a historical perspective, with a Micro-History approach and documental analysis to treat the sources, with a temporal delimitation from 1953 to 1954. Results documentary sources were found in paper support and interviews carried out with graduates of the course. The creation was founded on December 17, 1953. During the period investigated, the entity promoted leisure and sports activities, actions to recruit and improve the school's visibility, communicated with other student organizations, financial management, and exposed concern for the political, student, and social issues. Final considerations and implications for practice triangulation of sources and literature corroborate several issues documented in the minutes of the first administration and contribute to revealing part of the history of the student movement in the 1950s and of Ribeirão Preto School of Nursing itself.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

This investigation sought to understand whether performance in naturalistic virtual reality tasks for cognitive assessment relates to the cognitive domains that are supposed to be measured. The Shoe Closet Test (SCT) was developed based on a simple visual search task involving attention skills, in which participants have to match each pair of shoes with the colors of the compartments in a virtual shoe closet. The interaction within the virtual environment was made using the Microsoft Kinect. The measures consisted of concurrent paper-and-pencil neurocognitive tests for global cognitive functioning, executive functions, attention, psychomotor ability, and the outcomes of the SCT. The results showed that the SCT correlated with global cognitive performance as measured with the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). The SCT explained one third of the total variance of this test and revealed good sensitivity and specificity in discriminating scores below one standard deviation in this screening tool. These findings suggest that performance of such functional tasks involves a broad range of cognitive processes that are associated with global cognitive functioning and that may be difficult to isolate through paper-and-pencil neurocognitive tests.

ABSTRACT

Ecological validity should be the cornerstone of any assessment of cognitive functioning. For this purpose, we have developed a preliminary study to test the Art Gallery Test (AGT) as an alternative to traditional neuropsychological testing. The AGT involves three visual search subtests displayed in a virtual reality (VR) art gallery, designed to assess visual attention within an ecologically valid setting. To evaluate the relation between AGT and standard neuropsychological assessment scales, data were collected on a normative sample of healthy adults (n = 30). The measures consisted of concurrent paper-and-pencil neuropsychological measures [Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB), and Color Trails Test (CTT)] along with the outcomes from the three subtests of the AGT. The results showed significant correlations between the AGT subtests describing different visual search exercises strategies with global and specific cognitive measures. Comparative visual search was associated with attention and cognitive flexibility (CTT); whereas visual searches involving pictograms correlated with global cognitive function (MoCA).

ABSTRACT

Objective: The purpose of the study is to analyze the nurse's image during the commencement mass for the first graduating class of the Ribeirão Preto School of Nursing at the University of São Paulo (USP) in 1957. Methods: The images were analyzed in light of the thinking of Pierre Bourdieu and the literature on rites, fashion, body language, the history of Brazil and the history of nursing. Results: Two images that meet the criteria for inclusion were found in the institution's historical collection. The graduation mass was celebrated on December 21, 1957 at 8:30 a.m. and was entitled the Solemn Mass of Thanksgiving in the Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus at the Ribeirão Preto Holy House of Mercy. Conclusion: The signs instituted in the graduation mass include the uniform, the cap and the space between the graduates and the public, which was marked with clear fabric and denotes an area of social distinction. In addition, the corporal héxis reveals seriousness and purity, and helps to establish the new image of the graduate nurse in Ribeirão Preto. This study serves to broaden the discussion on construction of the nurse's image, professional identity and the Catholic influence in nursing education.

ABSTRACT

Nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infections are on the rise and often cause skin diseases that are misdiagnosed. The authors present three cases of atypical mycobacterial infections in insulin-dependent diabetics occurring in sites of subcutaneous insulin injections. One of the patients was vitamin D deficient at the time of infection with NTM. The history and clinical presentation of the cases are presented; pathogenesis and treatment are discussed in conjunction with the correlation of mycobacterial disease susceptibility with vitamin D deficiency.

ABSTRACT

Vitamin K1 is frequently used in the treatment and prevention of hypoprothrombinemia and hemorrhagic disease of the newborn. It also serves as an antidote to anticoagulants. Erythematous, indurated, pruritic plaques uncommonly occur in adults after intramuscular injection with vitamin K1. We present a case of a localized cutaneous reaction to intramuscular vitamin K1 in a peripartum patient with acute fatty liver of pregnancy. The history and clinical presentation of our case is presented with a discussion of the pathogenesis pathogenesis of vitamin K1 and available treatment for this condition.
