ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Hispanic/Latino people with epilepsy are a growing population that has been understudied in clinical epilepsy research. U.S. veterans are at a higher risk of epilepsy due to greater exposures including traumatic brain injury. Hispanic/Latino Veterans with Epilepsy (HL-VWEs) represent a growing population; however the treatment utilization patterns of this population have been vastly understudied. METHODS: HL-VWE were identified from administrative databases during fiscal year 2019. Variables compared between Hispanic and non-Hispanic VWEs included demographics, rurality, service era, utilization of clinical services/investigations, and service-connected injury. Chi-square and Student's t tests were used for comparisons. RESULTS: Among 56 556 VWEs, 3247 (5.7%) were HL. HL-VWEs were younger (59.2 vs 63.2 years; p < .01) and more commonly urban-dwelling (81.6% vs 63.2%, p < .01) compared to non-HL-VWEs. They were also more likely to have served in recent missions such as the Persian Gulf War and post- 9/11 wars (p < .01). HL-VWEs had a higher utilization of all neurology services examined including neurology clinic visits, computed tomography (CT) scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, electroencephalography (EEG), epilepsy monitoring, and comprehensive epilepsy care (p < .01 for all). HL-VWEs were more likely to visit an emergency room or have seizure-related hospitalizations (p < .01). HL-VWEs were more likely to have a service-connected disability greater or equal to 50% (p < .01). SIGNIFICANCE: This study is one of the largest cohorts examining HL-VWEs. We found higher utilization of services in neurology, epilepsy, and neuroimaging by HL-VWEs. HL-VWE are younger, more commonly urban-dwelling, and more likely to have served during recent combat periods and have higher amounts of service-connected disability. Given that the proportion of Hispanic veterans is projected to rise over time, more research is needed to provide the best interventions and mitigate the long-term impact of epilepsy on this diverse patient group.

OBJECTIVE: Prior work has demonstrated that women have been historically underrepresented across various research fields, including neuropsychology. Given these disparities, the goal of this study was to systematically evaluate the inclusion of women as participants in neuropsychology research. The current study builds upon previous research by examining articles from eight peer-reviewed neuropsychology journals published in 2019. METHOD: Empirical articles examining human samples were included in the current review if they were available in English. Eligible articles were examined to glean whether the main topic of the article was related to a gender issue, how gender was categorized, the gender distribution of the sample, whether gender was considered in analyses, whether gender was addressed in the discussion, and what age categories the study examined. RESULTS: There was a relatively even distribution of men (51.76%) and women (48.24%) in neuropsychological research studies reviewed. There were twice as many studies that included only men compared to only women (16 vs. 8 studies), and nearly twice as many studies consisted of ≥ 75% men (16.6%) compared to ≥75% of women (8.5%). Gender-focused research was limited (3%). Furthermore, gender was frequently disregarded in analyses (58%) and often not addressed in the discussion (75%). CONCLUSIONS: The current study highlights the limitations within neuropsychology related to the representation of women in research. Although it is encouraging that neuropsychological research is generally inclusive of women participants, future research should aim to more comprehensively investigate how gender may influence cognitive risk and resilience factors across different clinical presentations. Recommendations to begin addressing this challenge and to move toward more gender-equitable research are provided.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Surgical intervention for drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) is a safe and efficacious evidence-based treatment. Yet, neurologists have historically revealed hesitance in referring patients for surgical evaluations. The present study surveyed general neurologists and epilepsy specialists to assess their views and process in referring patients for specialized epilepsy care and epilepsy surgery. METHODS: A 14-item survey assessing epilepsy referrals and views of epilepsy surgery was distributed to all neurologists currently practicing in a large national integrated health system using REDCap. Responses were qualitatively analyzed and differences between general neurologists and epileptologists were assessed using chi-squared tests. RESULTS: In total, 100 responses were received from 67 general neurologists and 33 epileptologists with several similarities and differences emerging between the two groups. Both groups endorsed surgery and neuromodulation as treatment options in DRE, felt that seizure frequency rather than duration was relevant in considering epilepsy surgery, and indicated patient preference as the largest barrier limiting epilepsy surgery. General neurologists were more likely to require ≥ 3 ASMs to fail to diagnose DRE compared to epileptologists (45% vs. 15%, p < 0.01) who more often required ≥ 2 ASMs to fail. Epileptologists were also more likely than neurologists to try a new ASM (75.8% vs. 53.7%, p < 0.05) or optimize the current ASM (75.8% vs. 49.3%, p < 0.05) in DRE. General neurologists were more likely to consider epilepsy surgery to be less efficacious (p = 0.001) or less safe (p < 0.05). SIGNIFICANCE: Overall, neurologists appear to have generally positive opinions of epilepsy surgery, which is a change from prior literature and represents a changing landscape of views toward this intervention. Furthermore, epileptologists and general neurologists endorsed more similarities than differences in their opinions of surgery and steps to referral, which is another encouraging finding. Those gaps that remain between epileptologists and general neurologists, particularly in standards of ASM prescription, may be addressed by more consistent education about DRE and streamlining of surgical referral procedures.

ABSTRACT

Background: Women Veterans with epilepsy (WVE) may have unique psychiatric comorbidities that affect presentation, treatment, and outcomes. This large, nationally representative study of Veterans Health Administration (VHA) patients explores sex differences in psychiatric diagnoses and treatment to better characterize WVE. Methods: This study included a retrospective cohort design utilizing VHA Corporate Data Warehouse administrative data. Data from 58,525 Veterans with epilepsy (8.5% women) were obtained. Psychiatric diagnoses and treatment were analyzed, with comparisons between men with epilepsy and WVE. Secondary analyses included further exploration of select gynecological conditions. Results: WVE had higher psychiatric burden than men, as evidenced by higher rates of nearly all psychiatric diagnoses, including depression (59.1% vs. 38.9%; χ2 = 771.6), posttraumatic stress disorder (42.0% vs. 26.5%; χ2 = 549.1), and anxiety disorder (44.9% vs. 24.5%; χ2 = 977.7), as well as higher use of psychotropic medication prescriptions (2.3 vs. 1.4 average number of psychotropics prescribed). Furthermore, higher percentages of women versus men utilized the emergency room for psychiatric purposes (11.7% vs. 6.9%; χ2 = 153.06) and were hospitalized with psychiatric diagnoses (9.8% vs. 6.1%; χ2 = 100.95). Discussion: Veterans with epilepsy represent a unique group with high rates of psychiatric comorbidity. These results suggest that among Veterans, men and women with epilepsy have differing psychiatric comorbidities, leading to disparate health care needs. Based on this study's findings, WVE may require a different approach to care with an increased focus on specialized psychiatric treatment for WVE.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Parental and other caregiving leave is important to postdoctoral fellows, yet there is no field-wide recommendation for leave policies among clinical neuropsychology postdoctoral training programs, which is of particular relevance given the two-year requirement for eligibility for board certification. The aims of this manuscript are to (a) discuss general guidelines and recommendations for leave policies, both informed by prior empirical evidence as well as relevant existing policy guidelines from various academic and healthcare organizations, and (b) use vignettes to provide possible solutions for potential leave scenarios. Method: A critical review of literature on family leave from public policy and political science, industrial-organizational psychology, academic medicine, and psychology was conducted and findings were synthesized. Results and Conclusions: Fellowship training programs are encouraged to adopt a competency-based model that permits flexibility in leave during training without necessarily requiring an extended end date. Programs should adopt clear policies and make this information readily available to trainees and think flexibly about training options that best meet the training needs and goals of each individual. We also encourage neuropsychologists at all levels to engage in advocacy for broader systemic supports of trainees seeking equitable family leave.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Cognitive, mood, and behavioral changes are common among persons with epilepsy (PWE), resulting in a complex neuropsychological presentation. Women with epilepsy (WWE) represent a distinct cohort within the broader epilepsy population due to sex and gender-specific factors impacting epilepsy semiology and treatment. However, unique neuropsychological profiles among WWE have not been established. This narrative review aims to further define neuropsychological correlates in WWE and promote meaningful discussion related to enhancing the provision of neuropsychological care within this clinical population. Method: Current literature in PWE examining differences in cognitive function, mental health, and quality of life (QoL) between women and men was critically reviewed, emphasizing considerations for neuropsychological practice. Results: WWE demonstrate a preservation of verbal learning and memory compared to men both pre- and post-surgically, with sex-based, neurobiological mechanisms likely contributing to this association. WWE also have elevated risk for affective disorder psychopathology, suicidality, and traumatic experiences. Epidemiology related to psychotic and bipolar spectrum disorders is less clear, and findings are mixed regarding sex-specific behavioral side effects of antiseizure and psychotropic medication. Finally, hormonal and obstetric factors are highlighted as important contributors to neuropsychological symptoms in WWE, with elevated risk for low QoL and increased stigma associated with greater medical and psychiatric comorbidities compared to men. Conclusions: While emerging literature has begun to characterize the neuropsychological presentation of WWE, future research is needed to define sex and gender differences in neuropsychological sequalae among PWE to ensure consistency and quality of care for WWE.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Higher healthcare utilization in epilepsy correlates with better clinical and quality of life outcomes. Women Veterans with epilepsy (WVE) have unique characteristics that may affect access and utilization of care. This study investigates epilepsy care in WVE, with respect to utilization of outpatient, inpatient, and emergency room care. METHODS: Data were collected from 58,525 Veterans with epilepsy using the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Corporate Data Warehouse administrative data. Overall, 8.5% of the sample were women (n = 4983). Neurology visits, comprehensive epilepsy care, neuroimaging, ASM prescription and hospital and emergency care were analyzed, and comparisons were made with men Veterans with epilepsy to identify gender differences. RESULTS: Compared to men, a greater proportion of WVE utilized services including neurology (73.8% vs. 62.0%), comprehensive epilepsy care (16.1% vs. 11.7%), epilepsy monitoring unit evaluation (EMU; 6.1% vs. 2.9%), neuroimaging (CT: 39.1% vs. 36.6%; MRI: 43.7% vs. 32.5%), and electroencephalograms: (EEG: 36.5% vs. 29.1%). WVE also evidenced higher percentages of seizure-related emergency room care usage vs. men (15.2 vs. 12.6) and hospitalizations (12.3 vs. 10.0) and were prescribed a greater number of ASMs (average:2.3 vs. 1.9). Valproate was prescribed to 17.6% of WVE, despite potential teratogenic concerns. SIGNIFICANCE: WVE have greater utilization of epilepsy care within the VHA system compared to men, which could lead to better epilepsy management and quality of life. However, higher rates of emergency care, hospitalizations, and concurrent ASMs among WVE highlight the clinical complexity and raise concern for potentially comorbid conditions including psychogenic non-epileptic seizures.

OBJECTIVE: Psychiatric conditions are frequently co-morbid in epilepsy and studies examining Veterans with epilepsy suggest this population may present with unique psychiatric and clinical features Drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) may confer a greater risk of psychiatric dysfunction; however, there is a paucity of literature documenting this. To expand our clinical understanding of Veterans with DRE, we assessed a comprehensive Veterans Health Administration (VHA)-wide sample, describing psychiatric conditions, medications, and healthcare utilization. METHODS: Psychiatric and hospitalization data were collected on 52,579 Veterans enrolled in VHA healthcare between FY2014-2ndQtr.FY2020 from the VHA Corporate Data Warehouse administrative data. Data examined include psychiatric diagnosis, psychotropic medication use, and utilization of hospital services. RESULTS: At least one psychiatric diagnosis was present in 70.2% of patients, while 49.8% had two or more diagnoses. Depression (51.7%), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (38.8%), and anxiety (38.0%) represented the most common psychiatric co-morbidities. Psychiatric medication use was present in 73.3%. Emergency room (ER) visits were highest in those with suicidality (mean 14.9 visits), followed by bipolar disorder (10.3), and schizophrenia (12.1). Psychiatric-related hospitalizations were highest for schizophrenia (mean 2.5 admissions) and bipolar disorder (2.3). Females had more psychiatric diagnoses (2.4 vs. 1.6, p < 0.001), psychiatric medications (3.4 vs. 2.3, p < 0.001), and ER utilization than males (6.9 vs. 5.5, p < 0.001). SIGNIFICANCE: A substantial psychiatric burden exists among Veterans with DRE. Compared to prior epilepsy literature, results suggest that Veterans with DRE evidence more prevalent psychiatric comorbidity, emergency care usage, and inpatient psychiatric admissions. Females were especially impacted, with greater rates of psychiatric conditions and treatment. Considering the relationship of psychiatric comorbidities in epilepsy with psychosocial functioning and quality of life, our findings highlight the need for screening and provision of services for those with DRE.

INTRODUCTION: The healthy soldier effect (HSE) describes a phenomenon of enduring health and lower mortality among veterans due in part to initial screening procedures and health care access. Although early data were supportive of a broad HSE among former military members, more recent investigations have suggested a possible attenuation of the effect with older age. The present study aimed to provide an update of the HSE using an expansive Veterans Health Administration (VHA)-wide sample with a particular focus on age and sex effects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Mortality data for veterans within the VHA were obtained from the VHA Support Service Center program office and compared to mortality data from the general U.S. population spanning FY2014 to the second quarter of FY2020. The standardized mortality ratio (SMR) was calculated for the overall sample and for age- and sex-specific cohorts. Mortality rate ratios were also calculated and compared across sexes. RESULTS: Lower SMRs were observed in veterans compared to the general U.S. population (SMR 0.866). This effect was most prominent in younger and very old veterans, although a higher mortality was seen in the 55- to 64-year age cohort (SMR 1.371 for males and 1.074 for females). The HSE in females was lower than that in males in the <55-year age group but became higher in older cohorts. CONCLUSIONS: This is the largest investigation to date examining the HSE in U.S. veterans and includes younger veterans from more recent military eras. Higher mortality among the 55- to 74-year age groups merits further investigation, as does the relatively higher mortality among older female veterans. Our findings have implications for the provision of health care and preventative care to these veterans most at risk for higher mortality.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Stroke represents a primary cause of morbidity and mortality in pregnant and postpartum people. While pregnancy-related stroke has drawn increased attention in certain domains of health research (e.g. obstetrics, neurology), neuropsychology has yet to contribute to this literature. Given neuropsychologists' crucial role in stroke evaluation and rehabilitation efforts, our field is poised to offer insights into this important topic. Method: This review presents facts about pregnancy-related stroke most relevant for neuropsychologists, including epidemiology, risk factors, and mechanisms, alongside clinical considerations and open areas of inquiry. Structured in the format of a traditional neuropsychological evaluation, we walk readers through factors to consider in record review, the clinical interview, and providing feedback and recommendations. Conclusions: Pregnancy-related stroke can be associated with marked functional disability and decreased quality of life, and it is notable that prevalence rates are increasing. Presenting at a time when people are experiencing adjustment to a new phase of life, and most commonly affecting women of color and other vulnerable populations, pregnancy-related stroke is a unique condition warranting special attention within the broader stroke discourse. This review aims to serve as a starting point for neuropsychologists to better understand the unique attributes of pregnancy-related stroke through a neuropsychology lens. Beyond that, it aims to promote broader meaningful discussion of neuropsychology's role in women's health.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: While previous studies have described psychiatric profiles in patients with psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) and epileptic seizures (ES), a well-matched comparison between males and females has been lacking. To address this shortcoming, the present study sought to explore sex differences between male and female Veterans with ES and PNES in terms of psychiatric diagnoses, trauma histories, and psychiatric treatment. METHODS: A male Veteran sample (PNES n = 87, ES n = 28) was identified matching age and seizure diagnosis with our previously-gathered female Veteran sample (PNES n = 90, ES n = 28). Retrospective chart review was used to obtain demographic, psychiatric, and seizure-related variables. Group differences between PNES and ES were first assessed among males followed by differences between males and females. RESULTS: Males with PNES were more likely to receive psychiatric treatment (82.6 % vs. 60.7 %, p = 0.017), be prescribed more psychotropics (1.6 vs. 0.9, p = 0.003), and more likely to have childhood physical abuse (27.9 % vs. 3.6 %, p = 0.007) than those with ES. Compared to PNES, males with ES presented to the epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU) significantly later (12.8 years vs. 6.1 years, p = 0.009), and were prescribed more anti-seizure medications (ASMs) previously (2.1 vs. 0.8, p = 0.009) and currently (1.6 vs. 1.0, p = 0.001). Between males and females with PNES, females evidenced more depression (76.7 % vs. 26.3 %, p < 0.001), borderline personality disorder (18.9 % vs. 4.7 %, p = 0.004), suicidality (65.6 % vs. 33.7 %, p < 0.001), and childhood sexual abuse (37.8 % vs. 11.6 %, p < 0.001), while males had higher rates of substance use disorders (37.2 % vs. 8.9 %, p < 0.001). SIGNIFICANCE: A greater psychiatric burden is seen among females compared to males with PNES, especially diagnoses of borderline personality disorder and depression. Higher rates of suicidality and inpatient psychiatric hospitalization may warrant particular consideration in screening and intervention efforts among female Veterans with PNES.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: While women now represent a majority of neuropsychology trainees, men remain prominent in senior positions. As such, female mentees are often paired with senior male mentors, a practice referred to as "cross-gender mentorship." Although cross-gender mentoring dynamics have inherent potential for missteps due to implicit power differentials, when approached through a gender-informed lens, they can be optimized and lead to personal and professional growth for women neuropsychologists. The present article provides a framework for promoting gender-informed mentorship by cataloging first-hand accounts of early career women and discussing resultant lessons and concrete suggestions for mentorship. METHOD: The authors provide first-hand accounts of experiences related to cross-gender mentorship across a variety of settings and professional contexts. From these accounts, the following steps offer a framework to encourage effective mentorship: 1) Set appropriate expectations and boundaries, 2) Address challenging clinical interactions through a gender-informed lens, 3) Foster personal and professional development, 4) Understand the intersection between gender and multicultural traits, 5) Advocate for advancement of women in the field, and 6) Maintain knowledge of women's issues. CONCLUSIONS: Providing effective mentorship for women in neuropsychology is crucial to promote ascension of women to leadership positions and close long-established disparities in the field. The authors hope that our shared experiences can serve as useful tools for both women trainees and their mentors as they embark on mentoring relationships. Practically, we envision that mentoring dyads may discuss this article at the outset of their relationship to understand potential challenges and collaboratively establish a groundwork for optimal mentoring.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The number and proportion of women served by the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is rapidly expanding, necessitating better characterization of factors unique to this population. While nascent literature has begun to better characterize women within the broader seizure population, women Veterans remain an understudied sample. To expand our clinical understanding of women with seizures, we assessed demographic and clinical characteristics, as well as psychiatric/military histories in women receiving care from an Epilepsy Center of Excellence within the VA Healthcare System. METHODS: The sample included 90 women with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES) and 28 women with epileptic seizures (ES) as the final diagnosis after epilepsy monitoring at a large VA medical center between 2010 and 2020. Retrospective chart review gathered demographics, including age, marital status, and work status; clinical characteristics, including history of traumatic brain injury (TBI) or migraines, gynecological history, and use of anti-seizure medications (ASM); psychiatric information, including trauma history, psychiatric diagnoses, and treatment; and military history related to service or service connection. Group differences were assessed between women with PNES and ES. RESULTS: The ES group was significantly older than the PNES group (47.8 v. 41.9 years, p = 0.02) and had a non-significantly longer diagnosis duration (12.3 vs. 8.6 years, p = 0.17). Clinically, the PNES group had a significantly higher rate of migraines (76.7% v. 57.1%, p = 0.04) and hysterectomy (40% v. 17.9%, p = 0.03). Many psychiatric factors differentiated the two groups, with significantly higher rates of psychotropic medication use (86.7% v. 60.7%, p = 0.002), psychiatric hospitalization (42.2% v. 21.4%, p = 0.047), and suicide attempts (42.2% v. 14.3%, p = 0.005), alongside trends toward higher rates of military sexual trauma (47.8% vs. 28.6%, p = 0.07) and childhood sexual trauma (37.8% vs. 17.9%, p = 0.05) among those with PNES. SIGNIFICANCE: This is the largest study to date characterizing women veterans with seizures seeking comprehensive seizure care and provides an update to previously published information on Veteran samples with seizures. Several characteristics differ between women Veterans with PNES and ES, spanning demographic, clinical, and psychiatric factors. Understanding the unique profile of women Veterans with epilepsy seeking care through the VA system is a crucial step in providing optimal care, including making informed diagnosis and providing appropriate treatment.

ABSTRACT

Performance validity tests (PVTs) and symptom validity tests (SVTs) detect inaccuracies in examinee-completed measures, though methods for assessing the accuracy of informant reports-which may be inaccurate due to examinee deception, motivation for external incentives (e.g., disability payments), or attempts to validate examinee experiences-remain underexplored. We used a sample of 72 veteran-informant dyads undergoing evaluation of possible epilepsy-related neurocognitive disorder to assess the association between examinee response invalidity (i.e., performance and/or symptom invalidity) and informant report measures. Examinees completed PVTs, SVTs, cognitive, and self-report measures. Informants completed measures on examinee functioning and their own caregiver burden. Performance invalidity was defined as failure on two or more PVTs. Symptom invalidity for psychopathology symptom reports (SVT-P) and cognitive/somatic symptom reports (SVT-CS) were separately defined via above-threshold scores on two or more SVT criterion. Independent samples t tests demonstrated the associations of the PVT, SVT-CS, and SVT-P groups with informant-report measures. Informants for examinees with performance invalidity reported worse functioning in the examinee than informants for examinees in the valid performance group (medium-large effect sizes). Symptom validity status (for both SVT-CS and SVT-P) was meaningfully but less strongly related to informant-reported examinee functioning (small-medium effect sizes). Neither performance nor symptom invalidity was meaningfully related to informant-reported caregiver burden (negligible effect sizes). OBJECTIVE: Health literacy is a strong psychosocial determinant of health disparities and has been found to relate to various aspects of health-related technology use. With the increased implementation of neuropsychological services performed via telehealth during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, the relationship between health literacy and comfort with teleneuropsychology warrants further investigation. METHOD: The present study examined 77 Veterans participating in neuropsychological evaluations as a part of standard clinical care. The sample was diverse in terms of age ethnicity, and psychiatric and neurocognitive diagnoses. In addition to a fixed-flexible neuropsychological battery, the Brief Health Literacy Screening Tool (BRIEF) was administered to evaluate health literacy. Self-reported comfort with the teleneuropsychological evaluation was assessed using an informal 10-point scale, and qualitative comfort responses were also recorded. RESULTS: Independent samples t-tests revealed older adults were more likely to participate in the evaluation via telephone than with VA Video Connect. Although health literacy was not related to telehealth modality, it was correlated with comfort with the teleneuropsychological evaluation (r = .34, p < .01), although it is notable that average comfort levels were high across modalities (M = 8.16, SD = 2.50). CONCLUSIONS: Findings support the notion that teleneuropsychological services may feasibly be implemented with a diverse group of patients, although flexibility with modality may be necessary. Those performing these services should also be aware that patients with lower health literacy may feel less comfortable with teleneuropsychology as they seek to build rapport and optimize evaluation engagement.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The number of women veterans seeking Veterans Health Administration services has substantially increased over the past decade. Neuropsychology remains an understudied area in the examination of gender differences. The present study sought to delineate similarities and differences in men and women veterans presenting for neuropsychological evaluation in terms of demographics, referral, medical conditions, effort, and outcome diagnosis. METHOD: A database collected from an outpatient VA neuropsychology clinic from 2013 to 2019 was analyzed (n = 232 women, 2642 men). Additional analyses examined younger (n = 836 men, 155 women) and older (n = 1805 men, 77 women) age cohorts. RESULTS: Women veterans were younger and more educated than men, whereas men had higher prevalence of vascular risk factors. Both groups were most often referred from mental health clinics and memory was the most common referral question. Although men performed worse on performance validity measures, clinicians rated women as evidencing poorer effort on a cumulative rating based on formal and embedded performance validity measures, behavioral observations, and inconsistent test patterns. Older women reported more depressive symptoms than older men and were more commonly diagnosed with depression. CONCLUSIONS: This exploratory study fills a gap in the understanding of gender differences in veterans presenting for neuropsychological evaluations. Findings emphasize consideration for the intersection of gender with demographics, medical factors, effort, and psychological symptoms by VA neuropsychologists. A better understanding of relationships between gender and these factors may inform neuropsychologists' test selection, interpretation of behavioral observations, and diagnostic considerations to best treat women veterans.
