ABSTRACT

The continuous expansion of modern cities not only leads to ecological degradation but also seriously threatens regional ecological security and sustainable development. The construction of ecological security patterns (ESPs) has emerged as a significant approach to alleviate or even solve the conflict between regional development and ecological protection. The Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle (CCEC) represents the core area of regional economic development strategy in western China, characterized by rapid economic growth from 2000 to 2020. This study integrates assessments of ecosystem services importance, eco-environmental sensitivity and landscape connectivity; uses circuit theory and hydrological analysis to establish a research framework for the spatiotemporal evolution of regional ESP; and develops an optimized ESP combined with the Major Function Oriented Zone. The results indicate that urban expansion significantly impacted the ESP of the CCEC between 2000 and 2020. The fragmentation and merging of ecological sources occurred simultaneously, the number of patches reduced by 28.13% from 64 to 46. The early ecological security network was compromised, leading to the disappearance or elongation of some ecological corridors. The number of ecological corridors decreased by 36.03% from 136 to 87; the total length was reduced by 29.92% from 7500.57 km to 5256.28 km. Urgent optimization of the ESP is needed, reducing the number of key ecological protection areas by 50% from 106 to 53 while increasing priority restoration areas by 13.51% from 37 to 42. The study also reveals the insufficiency of the current Major Function Oriented Zone in protecting linear corridors, necessitating focused attention on the protection and restoration of ecological sources and surrounding corridors in important development zones. Additionally, a spatial optimization strategy of "one shelter, two cores, and three regions" is proposed to enhance regional ecosystem stability and connectivity. The aim was to strike a balance between ecological protection and food security by recommending an ecological corridor width range of 30∼100 m. These research findings offer scientific guidance for ecological space protection and restoration in the CCEC, contributing to the enhancement of both scientific and rational ecological planning in rapidly urbanizing areas.

ABSTRACT

Globally, lakes are drying up and shrinking and inland lakes, in particular, face severe water shortage problems. Thus, the degradation mechanisms and protection measures for inland lakes urgently need to be explored. Hongjiannao Lake (HL), an inland lake on the border of Shaanxi Province and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China, was selected for the present case study. The evolution of HL was analyzed and the current lake water storage was measured on site. The driving factors of water resource changes in HL were discussed based on meteorological and landcover data. The results showed that (1) from 1929 to 2021, the lake area of HL experienced four stages: formation, stability, shrinkage and recovery. The smallest water area was 31.08 km2 in 2015, half the size of lake in the 1960s. (2) Spatially, the morphological changes of HL mainly occurred where the rivers entered the lake. (3) In 2021, the average depth of HL was 3.77 m, and the water storage capacity was 140.56 million m3. (4) The annual average evaporation was 3.36 times the amount of the annual average precipitation in Hongjiannao Basin (HB), but climate change was not the main driver of changes in the HL area. (5) In the past 20 years, cultivated land and artificial surface increased by 3.11% and 1.04%, respectively, whereas grassland and water body decreased by 3.51% and 0.45%, respectively. The expansion of cultivated land and artificial surface, as well as the construction of reservoirs upstream of the lake, hindered the replenishment of water resources to HL. This study recommends a range of strategies for water resource protection in inland lakes, including implementing ecological restoration projects, carrying out inter-basin water transfer measures, improving the efficiency of regional water resource use, and improving industrial structure and distribution.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The two-child policy implemented in China resulted in a surge of high-risk pregnancies among advanced maternal aged women and presented a window of opportunity to identify a large number of placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) cases, which often invoke severe blood loss and hysterectomy. We thus had an opportunity to evaluate the surgical outcomes of a unique conservative PAS management strategy for uterus preservation, and the impacts of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in PAS surgical planning. METHODS: Cross-sectional study, comparing the outcomes of a new uterine artery ligation combined with clover suturing technique (UAL + CST) with the existing conservative surgical approaches in a maternal public hospital with an annual birth of more than 20,000 neonates among all placenta previa cases suspecting of PAS between January 1, 2015 and December 31, 2018. RESULTS: From a total of 89,397 live births, we identified 210 PAS cases from 400 singleton pregnancies with placenta previa. Aside from 2 self-requested natural births (low-lying placenta), all PAS cases had safe cesarean deliveries without any total hysterectomy. Compared with the existing approaches, the evaluated UAL + CST had a significant reduction in intraoperative blood loss (ß=-312 ml, P < .001), RBC transfusion (ß=-1.08 unit, P = .001), but required more surgery time (ß = 16.43 min, P = .01). MRI-measured placenta thickness, when above 50 mm, can increase blood loss (ß = 315 ml, P = .01), RBC transfusion (ß = 1.28 unit, P = .01), surgery time (ß = 48.84 min, P < .001) and hospital stay (ß = 2.58 day, P < .001). A majority of percreta patients resumed normal menstrual cycle within 12 months with normal menstrual fluid volume, without abnormal urination or defecation. CONCLUSIONS: A conservative surgical management approach of UAL + CST for PAS is safe and effective with a low complication rate. MRI might be useful for planning PAS surgery. ABSTRACT

The widespread use of the Internet of Things (Iot) makes it possible to connect everything but having enough IP addresses is a fundamental requirement of this paradigm. All previous environmental monitoring systems in China are based on IPv4. In combination with the characteristics and requirements of China's atmospheric environment monitoring system, this paper develops a monitoring system based on IPv6 technology. Users can directly access the monitoring equipment through the IPv6 website to view data and configure operations. This paper first introduces the design and implementation of the software and hardware of the system, then introduces the simplification of IPv6 protocol, the transplantation of IPv6 protocol on ARM and the design and implementation of embedded Web server system. The experimental results show that the developed atmospheric environment monitoring system can realize continuous data acquisition based on IPv6 and provide data-driven support for environmental protection management and decision-making.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Contrast-induced encephalopathy (CIE) is a rare complication of cardiac catheterization; clinical manifestations include cortical blindness, seizures and focal neurological deficits. In general, recurrent epileptic seizures following cardiac catheterization with iodixanol occur more rarely than do other complications. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report a case of a 76-year-old male patient who experienced unstable angina for nearly 10 months and was admitted to our hospital. Repeat cardiac catheterization was performed using iodixanol. At approximately 20 h after the first cardiac catheterization, his upper limbs began to exhibit slight trembling; the patient was conscious and could not control these movements. A total of 6 episodes occurred before the second cardiac catheterization was performed, with each episode lasting approximately 2 s. These symptoms were not treated. At approximately 2 h after the second cardiac catheterization, the symptoms became more severe, and the frequency of the episodes increased significantly; the symptoms had fully subsided at 6 h after the second operation. An electroencephalogram (EEG) demonstrated diffuse slowing with epileptiform abnormalities. Paroxysmal spike-wave and slow wave discharges were observed in the bilateral areas, and the abnormalities were marked in the frontal areas. These observations led us to conclude that the patient was experiencing epileptic seizures. During 6 months of monthly clinical follow-up visits after discharge, no abnormalities of the nervous system were found by cardiologists or neurologists, and the patient's EEG was normal. No antiepileptic drugs were administered throughout this process. CONCLUSIONS: CIE, especially recurrent epileptic seizures, is a rare but often reversible complication of cardiac catheterization with iodixanol. Its symptoms can be mild and therefore are easily ignored by physicians. Early CIE detection may be achieved by EEG. Repeated exposure to contrast agents carries the risk of recurrent epileptic seizures.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of morroniside against matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)2/9 and focal cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury in rats. A rat model of focal cerebral I/R injury rats was established and rats were administered with 30, 90 or 270 mg/kg/day morroniside for 7 days. The expression of MMP2/9 and neuronal apoptosis were assessed. In addition, the expression of active caspase-3, B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) and Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax) were measured. The results revealed that MMP2 and MMP9 expression was upregulated and the percentage of apoptotic neurons was increased in rats with focal cerebral I/R injury compared with the control. However, treatment with morroniside significantly inhibited I/R-induced MMP2/9 expression and neuron apoptosis compared with the untreated I/R injury group. Morroniside administration also decreased the expression of active caspase-3 and increased the Bcl-2/Bax ratio compared with untreated rats with focal cerebral I/R injury. The inhibitory effect of morroniside on MMP2/9 expression and neuron apoptosis was dose dependent. In summary, the results of the present study suggest that morroniside is able to protect against cerebral I/R injury in the brain and may have potential as a therapeutic treatment for patients who have suffered a stroke.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: During March 2008, a college in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in China, reported a measles outbreak, amid a city-wide outbreak involving >2700 cases. METHODS: Suspected case patients were defined as patients with onset of fever (≥38°) and rash between 7 March and 30 April 2008. Probable case patients were defined as suspected case patients with >3 days of rash or known exposure to someone with laboratory-confirmed measles. Confirmed case patients were defined as suspected or probable case patients with Koplik spots or positive titer for immunoglobulin M antibody. We conducted a case-control investigation to identify risk factors for transmission. RESULTS: We identified 162 suspected (attack rate, 1.9%), 99 probable, and 62 confirmed case patients. The epidemic curve indicated a point source initially, followed by person-to-person transmission. Approximately 63% of 90 probable case patients and 27% of 150 asymptomatic student controls randomly selected among classmates of student case patients visited internet cafés during the exposure period (odds ratio [OR], 4.5; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.6-8.0); 66% of case patients and 45% of student controls reported close contact with a measles case patient (OR, 2.3; 95% CI, 1.3-3.9). In stratified analysis, visiting internet cafés (OR, 4.0; 95% CI, 1.5-11) remained significantly associated with disease, but contact with case patients (OR, 1.9; 95% CI, .79-4.4) became nonsignificant. CONCLUSIONS: This measles outbreak was transmitted in internet cafés, followed by secondary transmission. Chinese universities should require proof of immunity or 2 doses of measles vaccine at college entry.
