ABSTRACT

Hydrogels are an attractive category of biointerfacing materials with adjustable mechanical properties, diverse biochemical functions, and good ionic conductivity. Despite these advantages, their application in electronics has been restricted because of their lack of semiconducting properties, and they have traditionally only served as insulators or conductors. We developed single- and multiple-network hydrogels based on a water-soluble n-type semiconducting polymer, endowing conventional hydrogels with semiconducting capabilities. These hydrogels show good electron mobilities and high on/off ratios, enabling the fabrication of complementary logic circuits and signal amplifiers with low power consumption and high gains. We demonstrate that hydrogel electronics with good bioadhesive and biocompatible interface can sense and amplify electrophysiological signals with enhanced signal-to-noise ratios.

ABSTRACT

Accumulating evidence suggests that imbalanced oxidative stress (OS) may contribute to the mechanism of schizophrenia. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the associations of OS parameters with psychopathological symptoms in male chronically medicated schizophrenia (CMS) and treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS) patients. Levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), hydroxyl radical (·OH), peroxidase (POD), α-tocopherol (α-toc), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-1 (TIMP-1) were assayed in males with CMS and TRS, and matched healthy controls. Schizophrenia symptoms were assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). The results demonstrated significant differences in the variables H2O2 (F = 5.068, p = 0.008), ·OH (F = 31.856, p < 0.001), POD (F = 14.043, p < 0.001), α-toc (F = 3.711, p = 0.027), TAC (F = 24.098, p < 0.001), and MMP-9 (F = 3.219, p = 0.043) between TRS and CMS patients and healthy controls. For TRS patients, H2O2 levels were correlated to the PANSS positive subscale (r = 0.386, p = 0.032) and smoking (r = -0,412, p = 0.021), while TAC was significantly negatively correlated to the PANSS total score (r = -0.578, p = 0.001) and POD and TAC levels were positively correlated to body mass index (r = 0.412 and 0.357, p = 0.021 and 0.049, respectively). For patients with CMS, ·OH levels and TAC were positively correlated to the PANSS general subscale (r = 0.308, p = 0.031) and negatively correlated to the PANSS total score (r = -0.543, p < 0.001). Furthermore, H2O2, α-toc, and ·OH may be protective factors against TRS, and POD was a risk factor. Patients with CMS and TRS exhibit an imbalance in OS, thus warranting future investigations.

ABSTRACT

Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) have attracted increasing attention due to their merits of high transconductance, low operating voltage, and good biocompatibility, ideal for biosensors. However, further advances in their practical applications face challenges of low n-type performance and poor stability. Here, it is demonstrated that wet-spinning the commercially available n-type conjugated polymer poly(benzimidazobenzophenanthroline) (BBL) into highly aligned and crystalline fibers enhances both OECT performance and stability. Although BBL is only soluble in high-boiling-point strong acids, it can be wet-spun into high-quality fibers with adjustable diameters. The BBL fiber OECTs exhibit a record-high area-normalized transconductance (gm,A ) of 2.40 µS µm-2 and over 10 times higher figure-of-merit (µC*) than its thin-film counterparts. More importantly, these fiber OECTs exhibit remarkable stability with no noticeable performance attenuation after 1500 cycles over 4 h operation, outperforming all previously reported n-type OECTs. The superior performance and stability can be attributed to shorter π-π stacking distance and ordered molecular arrangement in the fibers, endowing the BBL fiber OECT-based biosensors with outstanding sensitivity while keeping a miniaturized form factor. This work demonstrates that, beyond new material development, developing new fabrication technology is also crucial for addressing the performance and stability issues in n-type OECTs.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: A significant association between women's reproductive traits and the risk of schizophrenia (SCZ) has been discovered, but the causalities remain unclear. We designed a two-sample univariate Mendelian randomization (MR) study using female-specific SNPs collected from a large-scale genome-wide association study as a genetic tool to explore the causal effect of female reproductive traits on the risk of SCZ, and conducted a multivariate MR study to re-validate the above findings. METHODS: From extensive genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of people with European ancestry (n = 176,881 to 418,758 individuals), summary-level data on five female reproductive variables were extracted. Summary-level information on SCZ was taken from a GWAS meta-analysis involving 320,404 people with European ancestry. The inverse variance weighting estimations for both univariable MR (UVMR) and multivariable MR (MVMR) were presented as the primary results. MR-Egger, weighted median, simple mode, and weighted mode regression methods for UVMR, and MVMR-Egger, MVMR-Lasso, and MVMR-median methods for MVMR were used for sensitivity analyses. RESULTS: The UVMR produced compelling proof for a connection between genetically predicted later age at first sexual intercourse (AFS) (OR, 0.632; 95% CI, 0.512-0.777; P < 0.01) and decreased SCZ risk. Pleiotropy analysis of the AFS-SCZ association confirmed the robustness of the MR results (P > 0.05). Consistent, substantial causal effects of AFS (OR, 0.592; 95%CI, 0.407-0.862; P < 0.01) on the risk of SCZ were demonstrated after adjusting for body mass index, years of schooling, and smoking initiation using MVMR. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings provide convincing evidence that early AFS is a risk factor for SCZ. SCZ risk may be decreased by raising awareness of reproductive healthcare for women.

ABSTRACT

Serum neuropeptide levels may be linked to schizophrenia (SCZ) pathogenesis. This study aims to examine the relation between five serum neuropeptide levels and the cognition of patients with treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS), chronic stable schizophrenia (CSS), and in healthy controls (HC). Three groups were assessed: 29 TRS and 48 CSS patients who were hospitalized in regional psychiatric hospitals, and 53 HC. After the above participants were enrolled, we examined the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) and the blood serum levels of α-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH), ß-endorphin (BE), neurotensin (NT), oxytocin (OT) and substance.P (S.P). Psychiatric symptoms in patients with SCZ were assessed with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. SCZ patients performed worse than HC in total score and all subscales of the RBANS. The levels of the above five serum neuropeptides were significantly higher in SCZ than in HC. The levels of OT and S.P were significantly higher in CSS than in TRS patients. The α-MSH levels in TRS patients were significantly and negatively correlated with the language scores of RBANS. However, the BE and NT levels in CSS patients were significantly and positively correlated with the visuospatial/constructional scores of RBANS. Moreover, the interaction effect of NT and BE levels was positively associated with the visuospatial/constructional scores of RBANS. Therefore, abnormally increased serum neuropeptide levels may be associated with the physiology of SCZ, and may cause cognitive impairment and psychiatric symptoms, especially in patients with TRS.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To determine whether using robots in spine surgery results in more clinical advantages and fewer adverse consequences. Methods: Between October 1990 and October 2022, a computer-based search was conducted through the databases of PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Biology Medicine, VIP databases, and WAN FANG. The study only included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the clinical efficacy and safety of robot-assisted surgery with those of conventional spine surgery. The review was conducted following PRISMA 2020, and AMSTAR-2 was used to evaluate the methodological quality. R version 4.2.1 was used in the meta-analysis. The Cochrane Collaboration Tool was used for evaluating the risk of bias. Results: This study analyzed 954 participants from 20 RCTs involving cervical spondylosis, lumbar degenerative disease, scoliosis, etc. The robot-assisted group outperformed the freehand group in terms of intraoperative blood loss, number of screws in grade A position, grade A + B position, radiation dose, and hospital stay. Operation duration, visual analog scale scores of low back pain, Oswestry disability index, and radiation exposure time did not significantly differ between the two groups. Conclusions: Although robotic spine surgery is more accurate in pedicle screw placement than conventional methods, the robot group did not demonstrate an advantage in terms of clinical efficacy. Studies of complications and cost-effectiveness are still very rare.

ABSTRACT

Tui Na or massage therapy alleviates symptoms related to intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD). However, precise, repeatable, standardized instructions for Tuina manipulation are lacking. This study establishes IDD model rabbits induced by fibrous ring puncture, creates targeted Tuina stimulation protocols at the acupuncture points in the lumbar region, and describes in detail the operation methods and requirements of kneading, pointing, and flicking. New Zealand male white rabbits (n = 15) were selected and randomly divided into a blank group, a model group, and a Tuina group. The rabbits in the model group and the Tuina group were molded by fibrous ring puncture; the rabbits in the model group were only immobilized on the operating table without treatment. In contrast, the Tuina group used the "8N/10N, 30 cycles/min" prescription for kneading, pointing, and flicking to perform the intervention, using tactile sensory aids to monitor and regulate the intensity of the Tuina operation. Imaging diagnosis and pathological tests were used to assess the effect of Tuina in rabbits, and the results showed improved imaging features and significantly lowered pathology scores of lumbar disc degeneration in the Tuina group compared to the model group (P < 0.01). Targeted Tuina in the lumbar region may be beneficial in the alleviation of lumbar disc degeneration, but further verification is needed. By regularly performing Tuina and recording the mechanical information involved enables reproducible manipulation prescriptions and helps to observe the basic features of the underlying mechanism of Tuina for IDD.

BACKGROUND: It has been more than 2 years since the 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic destabilized the world, adversely affecting not only physical health, but also mental health. During this time, frontline medical workers were at a greater health risk, especially female medical workers. Changes or abnormalities in the menstrual cycle-an important indicator of women's health-may jeopardize female reproductive functioning. Considering that emotional health and sleep status may be related to the menstrual cycle, this study aimed to investigate the association between menstrual cycle changes, anxiety, sleep dysfunction, and other factors among female medical workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted by distributing online questionnaires to female medical workers in China from February to May 2022. The study included 160 women aged 18-45 years old. The questionnaires covered data related to the participants' sociodemographic characteristics, medical and reproductive history, and lifestyle. The Rating Scale for Clinical Manifestations of Menopathy (SCMM), Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and Sleep Dysfunction Rating Scale (SDRS) were utilized. Data were analyzed using chi-square tests, t-tests, and linear regression analysis. RESULTS: A total of 160 female medical staff were randomly selected in this research, of whom seven scored less than 3 points, 85 scored 3-11 points, and 68 scored more than 11 points on the total score of the SCMM. Compared to pre-pandemic scores, scores of dizziness and tinnitus were significantly higher during the COVID-19 pandemic. Scores corresponding to the following clinical symptoms were also higher during the pandemic: Menopathy, including hypaphrodisia, dim complexion, abnormal urination, languidness, dim menstruation, thin menstruation, dysmenorrhea, and empty or saggy lower abdomen (p < 0.05). However, pre-pandemic scores of vaginal bleeding quantity were significantly higher than those found during the COVID-19 pandemic (p < 0.05). Scores of vaginal bleeding quantity were significantly lower in cabin hospitals than other types of hospitals, and a similar finding was observed for vaginal bleeding duration (all p < 0.05). Moreover, the findings of the univariable and multivariable linear regression analysis revealed a link between consistent exercise, the underlying illness, the SDRS score, the SAS score, and the total score of SCMM (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we found that menstruation in female medical workers was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, regular exercise and good physical condition were protective factors, while anxiety and insomnia were risk factors for menstrual abnormalities.

Objective: The aim of this study was to comprehensively evaluate the efficacy of oblique lateral interbody fusion (OLIF) and transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) in the treatment of degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis by meta-analysis. Methods: A computer-based search of PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science Core Collection databases, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Biology Medicine, and Wanfang Digital Periodicals was conducted from the time of inception of each database to December 2021. The review process was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines and registered in the PROSPERO database. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.4 software provided by the Cochrane Library. Results: Thirteen studies were included in the statistical analysis. One randomized controlled study and 12 cohort studies with 954 patients were included. In terms of operation time, intraoperative blood loss, Oswestry disability index score, intervertebral height, and complications, the OLIF group was better than the TLIF group, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of visual analogue scale score, lumbar lordosis or fused segment lordosis (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Both OLIF and TLIF are effective surgical modalities in the treatment of degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis. They achieve similar therapeutic effects, but OLIF is superior to TLIF in restoring intervertebral height. At the same time, OLIF has the advantages of short operation time and less intraoperative blood loss.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disease in women that seriously interferes with patient's metabolic and reproductive functions. The current diagnostic criteria for PCOS are expert-based and still disputed. Previous studies have identified changes in DNA methylation in peripheral blood of women with PCOS, but their diagnostic potential for PCOS remains to be studied. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to identify potential methylation biomarkers for the diagnosis of PCOS in blood. METHODS: Methylation profiling of peripheral blood was downloaded from a public database, Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO), including 30 PCOS patients (diagnosed with the revised 2003 Rotterdam consensus criteria) and 30 age-matched healthy women recruited from Centre of Reproductive Medicine, Linyi People's Hospital, Shandong, China. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) was utilized to identify PCOS-related co-methylation CpG sites (co- MPs). Functional enrichment analysis was performed on the localized genes of PCOS-related co- MPs. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression was used to screen out CpG methylation signatures for PCOS diagnosis, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was conducted to evaluate their diagnostic accuracy. To assess the accuracy of the combination of the investigated indicators, multivariate ROC analysis was performed on the predicted probability values obtained using binary logistic regression on the methylation levels of selected CpGs. RESULTS: Seven co-methylation modules were obtained, among which the turquoise module is the most relevant to PCOS, containing 194 co-MPs. The genes that these co-MPs located in were mainly associated with the immune-related pathway. According to LASSO regression, three Co- MPs (cg23464743, cg06834912, cg00103771) were identified as potential diagnostic biomarkers of PCOS. ROC analysis showed an AUC (area under curve) of 0.7556 (sensitivity 60.0%, specificity 83.3%) for cg23464743, 0.7822 (sensitivity 70.0%, specificity 80.0%) for cg06834912, and 0.7611 (sensitivity 63.3%, specificity 83.3%) for cg00103771. The diagnostic accuracy of the combination of these 3 indicators presented to be higher than any single one of them, with the AUC of 0.8378 (sensitivity 73.3%, specificity 93.3%). CONCLUSION: The combination of 3 CpG methylation signatures in blood was identified with a good diagnostic accuracy for PCOS, which may bring new insight into the development of PCOS diagnostic markers in the future.

Background: Most previous studies on acupuncture in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) have focused on improving functional efficacy and safety, while related mechanisms have not been systematically reviewed. Acupuncture modulates cytokines to attenuate cartilage extracellular matrix degradation and apoptosis, key to the pathogenesis of KOA, but the mechanisms are complex. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to assess the efficacy of acupuncture quantitatively and summarily in animal studies of KOA. Methods: Nine databases including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science (including Medline), Cochrane library, Scopus, CNKI, Wan Fang, and VIP were searched to retrieve animal studies on acupuncture interventions in KOA published since the inception of the journal. Relevant literature was screened, and information extracted. Meta-analysis was performed using Revman 5.4 and Stata 17.0 software. Results: The 35 included studies involved 247 animals, half of which were in acupuncture groups and half in model groups. The mean quality level was 6.7, indicating moderate quality. Meta-analysis showed that acupuncture had the following significant effects on cytokine levels in p38MAPK and mitochondrial pathways: (1) p38MAPK pathway: It significantly inhibits p38MAPK, interleukin-1beta (IL-1ß), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), phosphorylated (p)-p38MAPK, matrix metalloproteinase-13 (MMP-13), MMP-1, a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs-5 (ADAMST-5) expression, and significantly increased the expression of collagen II and aggrecan. (2) mitochondrial pathway: It significantly inhibited the expression of Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax), cysteine protease-3 (caspase-3), caspase-9, and Cytochrome-c (Cyt-c). And significantly increased the expression of B cell lymphocytoma-2 (Bcl-2). In addition, acupuncture significantly reduced chondrocyte apoptosis, Mankin's score (a measure of cartilage damage), and improved cartilage morphometric characteristics. Conclusion: Acupuncture may inhibit cytokine expression in the p38MAPK pathway to attenuate cartilage extracellular matrix degradation, regulate cytokines in the mitochondrial pathway to inhibit chondrocyte apoptosis, and improve cartilage tissue-related phenotypes to delay cartilage degeneration. These findings provide possible explanations for the therapeutic mechanisms and clinical benefits of acupuncture for KOA. BACKGROUND: Since the 1990s, families from the ecologically hostile mountainous southern areas of Ningxia Province, China, have been migrating to the northern areas of the province. This study compared the prevalence of behavioral problems among migrant adolescents to those among host adolescents (adolescents from the northern areas) and adolescents in the region of origin (adolescents from the southern areas), to determine whether ecological migration is related to adolescent behavioral problems, and possible changes in such problems over time. METHODS: We used the Children and Adolescents Ecological Migration Survey on Mental Health, administered to 4805 students aged 12-16 years and their parents between 2012 and 2014 (W1), of whom 1753 students and their parents completed the follow-up between 2014 and 2017 (W2). Parents answered questions related to adolescent behavioral problems, main source of family income, parents' desire to reverse migrate, improved standard of living, and parents' educational attainment, while children completed the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire and a classroom environment questionnaire. RESULTS: The prevalence of behavioral problems among the migrant adolescents (28.04%) was significantly higher than among host adolescents (21.59%) or adolescents in the region of origin (24.37%; p < 0.001) at W1. After adjusting for gender and age, parents' work outside the home was the main source of family income (OR = 1.42, 95% CI = 1.13-1.78), and adolescents' learning burden (OR = 1.04, 95% CI = 1.01-1.06) in school negatively influenced behavioral problems. Strong student-teacher relationships (OR = 0.97,95% CI = 0.94-0.99) and parents who had no intention to move back to the original residence (OR = 0.70, 95% CI = 0.52-0.94) exerted a protective effect at W1; at W2, a protective effect was associated with improved living conditions (OR = 0.39-0.55, 95% CI = 0.25-0.84). The extent of behavioral problems among migrant adolescents significantly decreased after two years. CONCLUSION: Ecological migration will increase children's behavioral problems in the early stage, with various factors influencing the extent of these problems.

ABSTRACT

Conventional pressure sensing devices are well developed for either indirect evaluation or internal measuring of fluid pressure over millimeter scale. Whereas, specialized pressure sensors that can directly work in various liquid environments at micrometer scale remain challenging and rarely explored, but are of great importance in many biomedical applications. Here, pressure sensor technology that utilizes capillary action to self-assemble the pressure-sensitive element is introduced. Sophisticated control of capillary flow, tunable sensitivity to liquid pressure in various mediums, and multiple transduction modes are realized in a polymer device, which is also flexible (thickness of 8 µm), ultraminiature (effective volume of 18 × 100 × 580 µm3 ), and transparent, enabling the sensor to work in some extreme situations, such as in narrow inner spaces (e.g., a microchannel of 220 µm in width and 100 µm in height), or on the surface of small objects (e.g., a 380 µm diameter needle). Potential applications of this sensor include disposables for in vivo and short-term measurements.

ABSTRACT

Lanthanide bis(trimethylsilyl)amides, [(Me3Si)2N]3Ln(µ-Cl)Li(THF)3, were used as efficient catalysts for a one-pot reaction of α-ketoesters, dialkyl phosphite, and activated alkenes to produce α-dicarbonyl cyclopropanes in moderate to high yields. The reaction was stereoselective and the two adjacent carbonyls linked to the cyclopropane were in the cis-configuration. The high efficiency of the lanthanide amide in catalysing the reaction is the result of the cooperation between the lanthanide metal centre and the N(SiMe3)2 anion.

With the discovery of the liquid spreading mechanism on the peristome of Nepenthes alata, many studies focusing on uni-directional liquid spreading microstructures have been carried out with an emphasis on structural improvement and the spreading mechanism. Although there are various kinds of microstructures that can accomplish small-scale liquid uni-directional transportation, liquid spreading has not been optimized on a slope because of the unwanted backward flow generated by fabrication defects; inspired by the microstructure of the peristome surface of Nepenthes and the topography of the lizard skin, in this study, we present an innovative, easily processed microstructure that possesses the property of intensified uni-directional liquid spreading even on an oblique substrate. This property is derived from a new, hybrid mechanism that can significantly enhance the uni-directional liquid transportation.

ABSTRACT

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To reveal nurses' self-reported practice of managing chest tubes and to define decision-makers for these practices. BACKGROUND: No consensus exists regarding ideal chest-tube management strategy, and there are wide variations of practice based on local policies and individual preferences, rather than standardised evidence-based protocols. DESIGN: This article describes a cross-sectional study. METHODS: Questionnaires were emailed to 31 hospitals in Tianjin, and the sample consisted of 296 clinical nurses whose work included nursing management of chest drains. The questionnaire, which was prepared by the authors of this research, consisted of three sections, including a total of 22 questions that asked for demographic information, answers regarding nursing management that reflected the practice they actually performed and who the decision-makers were regarding eight chest-drain management procedures. McNemar's test was used to analyse the data. RESULTS: The results indicated that most respondents thought that it was necessary to manipulate chest tubes to remove clots impeding unobstructed drainage (91.2%). Most respondents indicated that dressings would be changed when the dressing was dysfunctional. At the same time, more than half of respondents approved of changing dressings routinely, and the frequency of changing dressings varied. When drainage was employed for pleural effusion and for a pneumothorax, 64.6% and 94.5% of respondents, respectively, considered that underwater seal-drainage bottles should be changed routinely, and the frequency of changing bottles both varied. The results indicated that nurses were the primary decision-makers in the replacement of chest tubes, manipulation of chest tubes and monitoring of drainage fluid. CONCLUSIONS: There was considerable variation in respondents' self-reported clinical nursing practice regarding management of chest drains. The rationale on which respondents' practices were based also varied greatly. This study indicated that nurses were the primary decision-makers for three of eight procedures regarding management of chest drains, which reflects that clinical nurses' decision-making power regarding management of chest drains was weak. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: This study describes the nurse-reported practices of Chinese nurses from Tianjin, including changing and selecting dressing types, manipulating chest tubes, clamping drains and replacing drainage bottles, and the study defines who the decision-makers were for these interventions. By focusing on nurses' self-report of behaviours in managing chest drains (actual nursing practice vs. nursing knowledge), this article also relates the literature to the research findings and denotes the gaps in knowledge for future research.
