ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate serum heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and oxytocin levels, attachment and perceived social support levels in adolescents with parental bipolar disorder (BD) and Schizophrenia (SCZ). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This study included 9 adolescents with SCZ parents, 30 adolescents with BD parents and 31 healthy adolescents. Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), Relationship Scale Questionnaire-Adolescent Form (RSQ-A) and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) were administered to all participants. In addition, serum HSP-70 and oxytocin levels were evaluated. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of attachment style, psychiatric symptoms and perceived social support. Serum HSP-70 levels were found to be lower in adolescents whose parents had BD. Serum oxytocin levels of the SCZ group were significantly lower than those of the BD group. CONCLUSIONS: HSP-70 level was found to be lower in adolescents with BD parents. Oxytocin level was found to be lower in adolescents with SCZ parents. These findings suggest that HSP-70 and oxytocin may be a marker of early life stress in adolescents with parental psychopathology. However, studies are needed to evaluate the relationship between attachment, oxytocin and HSP-70 in adolescents exposed to parental psychopathology in early life.

ABSTRACT

The presented study comprises the one-pot synthesis and the characterization of quercetin- and caffeic acid-functionalized chitosan-capped colloidal silver nanoparticles (Ch/Q- and Ch/CA-Ag NPs), and their antibacterial and anticancer activities. The formation of Ch/Q- and Ch/CA-Ag NPs has been confirmed by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The characteristic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) absorption band has been found at 417 and 424 nm for Ch/Q- and Ch/CA-Ag NPs, respectively. The formation of a chitosan shell comprising quercetin and caffeic acid, which surround the colloidal core Ag NPs, was confirmed by UV-vis, and FTIR analyses, and monitored by TEM microscopy. The size of nanoparticles has been determined as 11.2 and 10.3 nm for Ch/Q- and Ch/CA-Ag, respectively. The anticancer activity of Ch/Q- and Ch/CA-Ag NPs has been evaluated against U-118 MG (human glioblastoma) and ARPE-19 (human retinal pigment epithelium) cells. Both NPs showed anticancer activity, but Ch/Q-Ag NPs seemed to be more effective on cancer cell lines (U-118 MG) in comparison to healthy ones (ARPE-19). Furthermore, the antibacterial activity of Ch/Q- and Ch/CA-Ag NPs against Gram-negative (P. aeruginosa and E. coli) and Gram-positive (S. aureus and S. epidermidis) bacteria was determined, and dose-dependent antibacterial effects were found.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Skin diseases have negative psychological and social consequences, especially when they are chronic and affect a visible area of the body, such as the face. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to investigate and compare the psychosocial impact of three common chronic dermatoses of the face: acne, rosacea, and seborrheic dermatitis. METHODS: The Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Social Appearance Anxiety Scale (SAAS) were used to compare acne, rosacea, and seborrheic dermatitis patients and healthy controls. The relationships between DLQI, HADS, and SAAS results were investigated, as well as their associations with disease duration and severity. RESULTS: The study included 166 acne patients, 134 rosacea patients, 120 seborrheic dermatitis patients, and 124 controls. The patient groups had significantly higher DLQI, HADS, and SAAS scores than the control group. Rosacea patients had the highest DLQI and SAAS scores, as well as the highest anxiety prevalence. Patients with seborrheic dermatitis had the highest rate of depression. The DLQI, HADS, and SAAS results were moderately correlated with each other, but their relationship with disease duration and severity was insignificant or weak at best. CONCLUSIONS: Chronic facial dermatoses have a detrimental impact on mood and quality of life. Although patients with acne, rosacea, and seborrheic dermatitis have distinct lesions, the outcomes in terms of quality of life, anxiety, and depression are largely similar. Furthermore, these patients report similar levels of social anxiety as a result of their overall appearance.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to compare combined hypothermia (CH) to the 2 classical therapeutic hypothermia (TH) methods selective head cooling (SHC) and whole-body cooling (WBC). This retrospective cohort study included neonates who underwent CH, SHC, and WBC between 2012 and 2020. Mean rectal temperature was maintained at 33.5 ± 0.5°C by cooling the head and the body in the CH group, at 34.5 ± 0.5°C by cooling the head in the SHC group, and at 33.5 ± 0.5°C by cooling the body in the WBC group. The groups were compared in terms of side effects, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scores, and status at discharge. The study included 60 neonates in the CH group, 112 in the WBC group, and 27 in the SHC group. There was no significant difference in side effects between the groups (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference in brain MRI scores between the groups (p > 0.05); however, gray matter, white matter, and total MRI scores in the CH group were lower than in the WBC group. Duration of hospitalization was shorter in the CH group than in the other two groups (p = 0.022). CH was not associated with more side effects than the two classical TH methods. In addition, some of these findings suggest that CH might result in better clinical outcome than the two classical TH methods.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence of primary headache and potential biomarkers in patients diagnosed with Hashimoto thyroiditis. METHODS: Patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis referred to the outpatient endocrinology clinic were included in the study. The demographic data, thyroid function test results, and autoantibody titers were recorded. The headache's clinical characteristics were also determined. The same researcher used the visual analog scale for headache severity rating in all patients. RESULTS: 155 patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis were included the study. There were 95 (61.3%) cases diagnosed with headache consisting of 20 (21.1%) migraine cases, 17 (17.9%) tension type headaches (TTHs), and 20 (21.1%) new daily persistent headaches (NDPHs). 38 of 155 (24.5%) had hypothyroidism related headaches (HRHs). There was no statistically significant relationship between the headache type and a high blood antibody level anti thyroid peroxidase antibody (p=0.135), while a positive correlation was found with thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) (p<0.001). Hashimoto patients with migraine (n=14, 70.0%) were found to have higher blood antibody levels, while these ratios were found as 86.8% (n=33) in HRH-patients, 76.5% (n=13) in TTH-patients, and 60.0% (n=12) in NDPH-patients. 86 of 155 (55.5%) patients reported new onset headaches after a Hashimoto's thyroiditis diagnosis, and the headaches persisted without hormone therapy in 48 (84.2%) of these patients. These patients diagnosed with primary headache and this was interpreted as demonstrating comorbidity between Hashimoto's disease and primary headaches. CONCLUSION: Detection of only the relationship between TSH level and headache suggested that different mechanisms play a role in the pathophysiology. In the diagnosis of primary headache, it is important to look into secondary reasons.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND/AIM: Drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) is a condition that affects sleep habits and the quality of life of children unfavorably. The aim of our study was to evaluate the relationship of sleep habits and sleep chronotype with the quality of life and behavioral problems in children with DRE. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In our study, 2-11-year-old children, who were either healthy or diagnosed with DRE, were evaluated. A sociodemographic data form was filled out to evaluate the general characteristics of children. The Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) and the Children's Chronotype Questionnaire (CCTQ) for sleep habits, the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) for the quality of life, and the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC) for behavioral problems were filled out through face-to-face interviews with parents. RESULTS: Thirty children with DRE and 31 healthy children were included in our study. Statistically significant differences were found in children with DRE compared to the control group in terms of the total and the subscale scores of CSHQ, including sleep onset delay, sleep duration, sleep anxiety, parasomnias, and sleep-disordered breathing (p < 0.001). There were no significant differences between the groups in terms of CCTQ total scores and sleep patterns (p > 0.05). Significant differences were found in PedsQL total and subscale scores, and ABC scores in children with DRE compared to the control group (p < 0.001). Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire, PedsQL, and ABC scores were significantly correlated with each other in children with DRE. CONCLUSIONS: Our results have shown that sleep habits and the quality of life are poor in children with DRE. Our study has shown that sleep disturbances, quality of life, and behavioral problems are strongly associated with each other in DRE. The recognition and appropriate treatment of sleep disturbances are important for improving the quality of life in children with DRE.

ABSTRACT

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs), glioblastomas (GBMs), and malignant melanomas (MMs) are neural crest-originating aggressive tumors with a poor prognosis. Signal transducer and transcription activator 3 (STAT3) plays a role in many biological processes, including cell life and proliferation, the acute phase response, chronic inflammation, autoimmunity, metabolism, and cancer progression, It is also known to be a prooncogenic transcription factor. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is one of the most potent proangiogenic stimuli ever identified. It mediates tumor neovascularization, and is associated with angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis. The prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) folate hydrolase I, despite its name, has been found in tissues other than the prostate. It is overexpressed in prostate cancer cells and several other cancers, and has the potential to be a target for radioligand therapy. We investigated the value of STAT3, VEGF and PSMA immunohistochemical expression patterns and their effects on survival in MPNSTs, GBMs, and MMs. Their expression patterns were evaluated in 25 MPNSTs, 27 GBMs, and 25 MM cases. All GBM cases stained positively for STAT3 and VEGF. In the other groups, the staining patterns were heterogeneous. None of the cases showed positive staining with PSMA. There was no statistically significant difference in survival between cases with differing VEGF and STAT3 staining patterns in the MPSNT and MM groups, but there was an increase in mortality as the VEGF score increased in the GBM group. The suppression of VEGF and STAT3 may be a promising avenue for treatment of MPNSTs, GBMs, and MMs, although further research is needed.

ABSTRACT

The European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire was translated into Turkish following a validity and reliability study, but there is no comprehensive short form available. We aimed to suggest a short form of the 47-item Turkish version of European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire in this study. Data were obtained from a cross-sectional study that included a total of 686 students, 345 male and 341 female, conducted in nine different faculties of a university using the Turkish version of European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire. The development process of the short form was conducted using principal component analysis with exploratory factor analysis, and correlation and regression analyses. The validation process was done using confirmatory factor analysis and regression analysis. Based on the results, a 12-item short form was developed, retaining the conceptual framework of the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire. The short form was shown to have adequate psychometric properties with high reliability, good validity, a high and moderate level of correlation, and a good model fit with the independent dataset in this cross-sectional study. The short form developed in this study was demonstrated to be a valid and reliable tool to measure health literacy easily and rapidly in Turkey.

ABSTRACT

Biomonitoring studies are important tools to understand the effects of endocrine-disrupting compounds on human health. Up to now, there have been no biomonitoring and risk assessment studies conducted in Turkish population in which urinary bisphenol A (BPA), 4-nonylphenol (4-NP), and 4-t-octylphenol (4-t-OP) levels were measured simultaneously. The aim of this study is to measure urinary BPA, 4-NP, and 4-t-OP on Turkish population and conduct a risk assessment using urinary levels of chemicals of interest. During the study, liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was used to measure urinary levels of above-mentioned chemicals, and human biomonitoring was used as a risk assessment tool in 103 volunteers, living in Mersin Region, Turkey. Urinary BPA, 4-NP, and 4-t-OP were founded as 0.0079 µg/g creatinine, 0.0177 µg/g creatinine, and 0.0114 µg/g creatinine, respectively. The obtained estimated daily intakes (EDIs) were calculated as 0.095 µg/kg bw/day, 0.041 µg/kg bw/day, and 0.091 µg/kg bw/day, for BPA, 4-NP, and 4-t-OP, respectively. In conclusion, although no potential health risk due to BPA and 4-NP exposure was observed, there might be health risks associated with 4-t-OP exposure in the Turkish population.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) have been recognized as a diverse group of organisms that are ubiquitous in environmental sources. In most regions of the world, NTM are not reportable as a public health disease, so epidemiological data are not easily available. However, data in published studies note increasing trends at the rate of NTM isolation from different geographic regions of the world. Increasing NTM isolation may have important public health implications. The aim of our study is the investigation of NTM from water resources and networks in Düzce, Turkey. Methods: NTM are common in water resources and water networks. They can cause waterborne infections in humans. A total of 120 water samples measured of chlorine and pH levels were decontaminated and filtered. Then, the filters were placed in the culturing media. Statistical Analysis Used: Chi-square and t-test were used for the statistical analysis. Results: NTM were detected in 20 (16.6%) samples. Nine of them (45%) were Mycobacterium fortuitum, three (15%) were Mycobacterium gordonae, three (15%) were Mycobacterium szulgai, two (10%) were Mycobacterium lentiflavum, two (10%) were Mycobacterium chelonae, and one (5%) was Mycobacterium peregrinum. Conclusions: These environmental bacteria can cause serious illnesses in both immunocompetent and especially immunocompromised individuals. For the correct treatment of these patients, it is important to determine NTM in clinical samples. Surveillance is necessary to know the source of NTM infection, to identify and type the strains, and to establish effective control measures such as disinfection, maintenance, and modernization of water systems.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Headache is the most common complaint in cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) and it may sometimes be the only symptom in these patients. This retrospective and prospective study was an investigation of any differences in terms of clinical risk factors, radiological findings, or prognosis in patients with CVST who presented with isolated headache (IH) and cases with other concomitant findings (non-isolated headache [NIH]). METHODS: A total of 1144 patients from a multicenter study of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (VENOST study) were enrolled in this research. The demographic, biochemical, clinical, and radiological aspects of 287 IH cases and 857 NIH cases were compared. RESULTS: There were twice as many women as men in the study group. In the IH group, when gender distribution was evaluated by age group, no statistically significant difference was found. The onset of headache was frequently subacute and chronic in the IH group, but an acute onset was more common in the NIH group. Other neurological findings were observed in 29% of the IH group during follow-up. A previous history of deep, cerebral, or other venous thromboembolism was less common in the IH group than in the NIH group. Transverse sinus involvement was greater in the IH group, whereas sagittal sinus involvement was greater in the NIH group. The presence of a plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI) mutation was significantly greater in the IH group. CONCLUSION: IH and CVST should be kept in mind if a patient has subacute or chronic headache. PAI, which has an important role in thrombolytic events, may be a risk factor in CVST. Detailed hematological investigations should be considered. Additional studies are needed.

ABSTRACT

We evaluated the cost and efficacy of radiobasilic and brachiobasilic arteriovenous fistula (AVF) methods in terms of forearm autogenous arteriovenous access in hemodialysis patients. We used a decision tree to compare the cost-effectiveness of proximal radiobasilic AVF (pRBAVF) and brachiobasilic AVF (BBAVF), considering the mean direct medical costs and patency rates. The overall mean cost of pRBAVF per patient (1767.59 Turkish lira [TL]) was lower than that of BBAVF (1877.99 TL). Also, the mean patency duration per patient was higher for pRBAVF (25.72 months) than BBAVF (20.21 months). The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) showed that pRBAVF was 20.04-fold more effective than BBAVF. The monthly ICERs also favored pRBAVF, which was less costly and more effective. The pRBAVF provided clinical and economic benefits for hemodialysis patients requiring forearm autogenous arteriovenous access. pRBAVF was more effective in terms of patency than BBAVF, and was also less expensive.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is a prophylactic operation that is used to mitigate the risk of stroke caused by embolism of atherosclerotic plaques in the carotid bifurcation. Previously, the large, multicentre, randomised, controlled GALA study found no significant differences in clinical outcomes between patients treated using general or local anaesthesia. While this study provided important insights into disease outcomes based on treatment modalities, it did not answer questions regarding the safety of CEA under local anaesthesia in patients at high risk for cardiovascular complications. Here, we examined the use of two different management plans in patients requiring both carotid endarterectomy and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), in terms of their effects on hospital mortality. METHODS: Thirty-four patients consecutively operated on in our cardiovascular department were included in this analysis. The patients were divided into two groups based on the anaesthetic management plan. The first group consisted of patients who underwent CEA and CABG under general anaesthesia in the same session (GA group); the second group consisted of patients who initially underwent CEA under cervical block anaesthesia followed by CABG under general anaesthesia in a separate session (CB-GA group). These two groups were compared in terms of postoperative complications and hospital mortality. RESULTS: The incidence of postoperative myocardial infarction was higher in the CB-GA group, with four patients experiencing postoperative myocardial infarction, compared to no patients in the GA group. CONCLUSIONS: For patients requiring CEA and CABG, performing both operations under general anaesthesia in the same session was safer than initially performing CEA under cervical block anaesthesia followed by CABG under general anaesthesia.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 infection is severe in the presence of older age, male gender and risk factors. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the level of anxiety created by immensely spreading COVID-19-related information and age, gender and the presence of risk factors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The data used in this study were obtained by collecting a 25-question questionnaire created through Google forms with various communication tools. RESULTS: The data of 929 people who answered the questionnaire were used. The level of anxiety increased with age significantly, upon hearing that a person from their age group was harmed by the virus (P < .001). The feelings of being depressed and hopeless significantly increased as the age increased (P < .001). There was no significant difference between the genders in terms of feeling depressed and feeling of lack of joy in life (P = .066, P = .308, respectively). Participants with chronic diseases stated that they felt more depressed and hopeless and a lack of joy in life more frequently (P < .001). CONCLUSION: Our results indicated that individuals with older age and having risk factors were more vulnerable to the stress caused by the pandemic. It is necessary for healthcare providers to identify high-risk groups by considering these situations, in order to make early psychological interventions.

ABSTRACT

Background/aim: Hantavirus is a rodent borne zoonosis caused by the members of the virus family Bunyaviridae, genus Hantavirus. In this study, we aimed to determine the role of peripheral blood leukocyte ratio in differential diagnosis of Hantavirus disease. Materials and methods: The medical records of patients at the Düzce University Medical Faculty were examined retrospectively. A total of 20 patients diagnosed with hantavirus infection confirmed by serologic tests were included in the study (Group 1). The other group consisted of 30 patients suspected of hantavirus infection but found negative (Group 2). Demographic, clinical and laboratory characteristics, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and lymphocyte/monocyte (LMR) ratios of both groups were compared. Results: As a result of the istatistics analysis, no difference was found between the groups' age, sex, and clinical complaints except lethargy-weakness (P = 0.004) and diarrhea (P < 0.001). Hemogram analysis showed a significant difference between the groups in terms of leukocyte, hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelet, mean platelet volume (P < 0.05) and PLR (P = 0.001) and LMR (P = 0.003) values from peripheral blood leukocyte ratios. Conclusion: In conclusion, NLR, PLR, and LMR ratios may be useful for clinicians in differential diagnosis of Hantavirus in patients presenting with similar symptoms of Hantavirus disease.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral venous and sinus thrombosis (CVST) may lead to cerebral edema and increased intracranial pressure; besides, ischemic or hemorrhagic lesions may develop. Intracerebral hemorrhages occur in approximately one-third of CVST patients. We assessed and compared the findings of the cerebral hemorrhage (CH) group and the CVST group. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the VENOST study, medical records of 1,193 patients with CVST, aged over 18 years, were obtained from 35 national stroke centers. Demographic characteristics, clinical symptoms, signs at the admission, radiological findings, etiologic factors, acute and maintenance treatment, and outcome results were reported. The number of involved sinuses or veins, localizations of thrombus, and lesions on CT and MRI scans were recorded. RESULTS: CH was detected in the brain imaging of 241 (21.1%) patients, as hemorrhagic infarction in 198 patients and intracerebral hemorrhage in 43 patients. Gynecologic causes comprised the largest percentage (41.7%) of etiology and risk factors in the CVST group. In the CH group, headache associated with other neurological symptoms was more frequent. These neurological symptoms were epileptic seizures (46.9%), nausea and/or vomiting (36.5%), altered consciousness (36.5%), and focal neurological deficits (33.6%). mRS was ≥3 in 23.1% of the patients in the CH group. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: CVST, an important cause of stroke in the young, should be monitored closely if the patients have additional symptoms of headache, multiple sinus involvement, and CH. Older age and parenchymal lesion, either hemorrhagic infarction or intracerebral hemorrhage, imply poor outcome.

ABSTRACT

There is not enough data about osteoporosis and the role of receptor activator of nuclear factor κ-Β ligand (RANKL)/serum osteoprotegerin (OPG) system in patients with double heterozygosity for sickle cell disease and ß-thalassemia [Hb S (HBB: c.20A>T)/ß-thal] and ß-thal trait. Aim of the study was to investigate bone mineral densities (BMD) and the role of RANKL/OPG system in these cases. We studied 58 adults with Hb S/ß-thal, 52 adults with ß-thal trait, 34 healthy subjects as a control group. The BMD was determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Biochemical markers of bone metabolism (serum calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin) parameters that affect bone metabolism (serum parathyroid hormone, thyroid-stimulating hormone, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, OPG, soluble RANKL [sRANKL]) were studied. Femoral neck Z-scores of 93.2% for ß-thal trait, 83.0% for Hb S/ß-thal patients were within the expected range. Lumbar spine Z-scores of 89.1% for ß-thal, 90.2% for Hb S/ß-thal patients were above -2.0 SD. Z-scores of the control group were within the expected range. Median serum sRANKL level was 2.80, 4.52, 5.79 pmol/L in Hb S/ß-thal, ß-thal trait, control groups, respectively (p = 0.010). Median serum OPG level was 1.07, 0.86, 0.86 pmol/L in Hb S/ß-thal, ß-thal trait, control groups, respectively (p < 0.001). ß-Thalassemia trait alone is not a risk factor for osteopenia/osteoporosis and osteoporosis does not develop in premenopausal women and men younger than 50 years with Hb S/ß-thal. However, as we determined lower levels of osteocalcin, compensatory decrease of sRANKL with compensatory increase of OPG, more severe osteoporosis may develop in advanced ages in these patient populations.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Cellulite infection is a non-necrotizing inflammation of the skin and subcutaneous tissue and is one of the most common reasons for admission to hospital. This retrospective study aimed to investigate the Neutrophil to Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR), Platelet to Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR), and Lymphocyte to Monocyte Ratio (LMR) in patients with cellulitis. METHODS: In our study, we retrospectively analyzed 96 patients with cellulitis and 98 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. The study and control groups were compared regarding NLR, PLR, and LMR.0.001). When patients with cellulitis were divided into two groups, i.e., ≥65 years and <65 years, a statistically significant difference was noted in the NLR and LMR values (p < 0.05). In the ROC curve analysis, NLR had the highest discriminative power in distinguishing between cellulitis and healthy controls (AUC = 0.950, 95% CI: 0.920-0.979, p < 0.001; 91.6% sensitivity and 89.8% specificity). CONCLUSION: NLR was significantly higher in differentiating cellulite and in patients older than 65 years. Larger, prospective studies are required to determine its usefulness in assessing differential diagnosis and prognosis in cellulitis patients.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) associated with reproductive health-related risk factors (RHRF) including pregnancy, puerperium, and oral contraceptive (OC) use can prevent severe neurological sequelae; thus, the symptoms must be documented in detail for each group. METHODS: Out of 1144 patients with CVST, a total of 777 women were enrolled from a multicenter for the study of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (VENOST). Demographic, biochemical, clinical, and radiological aspects were compared for 324 cases with RHRF and 453 cases without RHRF. RESULTS: The mean age of the RHRF (-) group (43.2 ± 13 years) was significantly higher than of the RHRF (+) group (34 ± 9 years). A previous history of deep venous thrombosis (3%), isolated cavernous sinus involvement (1%), cranial neuropathy (13%), comorbid malignancy (7%), and its disability scores after 12 months (9%) were significantly higher in the RHRF (-) group. The RHRF (+) group consisted of 44% cases of puerperium, 33% cases of OC users and 23% of pregnant women. The mean age was found to be higher in OC users (38 ± 9 years). A previous history of deep venous thrombosis was slightly higher in the pregnancy subgroup (4%). Epileptic seizures were more common in the puerperium group (44%). CONCLUSION: The results of our study indicate that the risk of CSVT increases parallel to age, OC use, and puerperium period. In addition, when considering the frequency of findings and symptoms, epileptic seizures in the puerperium subgroup of the RHRF (+) group and malignancies in the RHRF (-) group may accompany the CSVT. In daily practice, predicting these risks for the CSVT and early recognition of the symptoms will provide significant benefits to patients.
