ABSTRACT

Separating valuable materials such as dyes from wastewater using membranes and returning them to the production line is a desirable environmental and economical procedure. However, sometimes, besides filtration, adsorption, and separation processes, pollutant destruction also can be suitable using photocatalytic membranes. The art of producing nanohybrid materials in contrast with nanocomposites encompasses nanomaterial synthesis as a new product with different properties from raw materials for nanohybrids versus the composition of nanomaterials for nanocomposites. According to the findings of this research, confirming proper synthesis of nanohybrid is one challenge that can be overcome by different analyses, other researchers' reports, and the theoretical assessment of physical or chemical reactions. The application of organic-inorganic nanomaterials and frameworks is another challenge that is discussed in the present work. According to the findings, Nanohybrid Membranes (NHMs) can achieve 100% decolorization, but cannot eliminate salts and dyes, although the removal efficiency is notable for some salts, especially divalent salts. Hydrophilicity, antifouling properties, flux, pressure, costs, usage frequency, and mechanical, chemical, and thermal stabilities of NHMs should be considered.

ABSTRACT

The present study assessed the performance and fouling of adding granular activated carbon (GAC) and sponge (BioCube), as two different media, to a membrane sequencing batch reactor (MSBR) system in wastewater treatment containing Acid Red 18 (AR 18). Anaerobic phase, aerobic phase, and hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 24 h, 12 h, and 72 h were considered for 500 mg/L AR 18 removal at a sludge retention time (SRT) of 20 days by separately adding up to 35% BioCube volume and 8 g/L GAC to the reactors. Based on the kinetic study, 63 mg/L (87% removal) and 115 mg/L (77% removal) remaining dye were reported in the GAC and BioCube membrane sequencing batch reactors (GAC-MSBR and BioCube-MSBR), respectively. A gradual oxidation-reduction potential decline toward -416 mV confirmed better dye removal in GAC-MSBR than BioCube-MSBR, observing a sudden drop to -354 mV. The morphology can explain better biological treatment in GAC-MSBR in addition to the adsorption process. Soluble microbial products (SMPs) of 126.92 mg/L and 395.18 mg/L were obtained for GAC-MSBR and BioCube-MSBR, respectively. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) and SMP indicated that the GAC-MSBR water quality is better than that of the other reactor.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common diseases worldwide. Studies have shown that melatonin, as a regulatory hormone, is effective in different cell protective pathways. We aimed to compare serum melatonin levels of patients with NAFLD with different stages of fibrosis with that of healthy individuals. METHODS In this cross-sectional study patients, aged >20 years with elevated serum liver enzymes and trance abdominal sonographic diagnosis of fatty liver who met the exclusion criteria for NAFLD were included. The participants were categorized into three groups as follows: 1) severe fibrosis (fibrosis > 9.1 kPa and steatosis > 285 dbm), 2) mild-moderate fibrosis (fibrosis: 6-9.0 kPa and steatosis 240-285), and 3) normal group with fibrosis < 5.8 kPa and steatosis < 240 dbm based on Fibroscan evaluation. Five ml of fasting venous blood was taken from each patient and the control group for laboratory assessment. A questionnaire including demographic, anthropometric, laboratories (serum ALT, AST, triglyceride, total cholesterol and melatonin level), and clinical data was completed for all participants. RESULTS 97 people with a mean±SD age of 42.21 ± 11 years were enrolled. 59 (60.0%) patients were women. we observed that the melatonin levels were increased by advancing fibrosis. Based on control- attenuated parameter results the melatonin levels significantly differed between the healthy individuals and patients with severe steatosis. There was a direct association between increased melatonin levels and liver enzymes. CONCLUSION As a regulatory hormone, melatonin may directly be associated with liver cell injuries. Therefore, considered regulatory substances such as melatonin either diagnostic or therapeutic can improve the patients' outcome.

ABSTRACT

Neural networks have become standard tools in the analysis of data, but they lack comprehensive mathematical theories. For example, there are very few statistical guarantees for learning neural networks from data, especially for classes of estimators that are used in practice or at least similar to such. In this paper, we develop a general statistical guarantee for estimators that consist of a least-squares term and a regularizer. We then exemplify this guarantee with ℓ1-regularization, showing that the corresponding prediction error increases at most logarithmically in the total number of parameters and can even decrease in the number of layers. Our results establish a mathematical basis for regularized estimation of neural networks, and they deepen our mathematical understanding of neural networks and deep learning more generally.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The long-term sequelae of methotrexate (MTX) remain the major cause of concern for both patients and therapists. Therefore, new approaches to decrease MTX side effects are needed. The study was carried out to evaluate the effects of Iris songarica Schrenk (IS) rhizome extract against MTX-induced hepatic and renal injuries in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups (n=8) including control, MTX, IS50, IS150 and IS300. Control and MTX groups were only treated orally with saline; whereas, IS50, IS150 and IS300 groups were treated with IS extract at three different doses (50, 150, and 300 mg/kg, respectively). Besides, the MTX and experimental groups were received a single dose of MTX (20 mg/kg) intraperitoneally on day 4. On the ninth day, animals were sacrificed, blood transaminases, urea and creatinine were assessed and the concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) and the activity of super-oxide dismutase (SOD) were determined in both liver and kidney tissues. Moreover, hepatic and renal damages were evaluated histopathologically. RESULTS: MTX by increasing oxidative stress (MDA) and decreasing antioxidant capacity (SOD) induced hepatic and renal damages as confirmed by biochemical and histological parameters analyses. However, treatment with IS caused significant improvements in hepatic and renal histological architectures and SOD activity (p<0.01) along with reducing liver enzymes, urea, creatinine and MDA (p<0.01). CONCLUSION: The results of the present study showed that IS extract through antioxidant and probably anti-inflammatory activities, could effectively limit MTX-induced hepatic and renal injuries in rats.

Abstract Introduction Tonsillectomy is one of the most common surgeries in the head and neck worldwide. This operation is carried out by different methods, the most frequent of which are the cold dissection and bipolar electrocautery techniques. Objective This study was conducted to assess and compare postoperative morbidity between cold dissection and bipolar electrocautery. Methods This prospective randomized clinical trial was performed on 534 patients who underwent tonsillectomy in Vali-e-Asr Hospital of Birjand, east of Iran from October, 2013 to October, 2015. The patients were systematically selected for cold dissection technique or bipolar electrocautery technique groups. Time of surgery, amount of intraoperative blood loss, postoperative hemorrhage, the intensity of local pain 4 and 24 hours after operation and nausea and/or vomiting were recorded and compared in the two groups to decide which technique is better. The data were analyzed in SPSS software (ver-22). The p-value less than 0.5 was considered significant. Results In this study, 51.7% of the cold dissection technique patients and 50.6% of the bipolar electrocautery technique participants were male. Compared to the cold dissection technique, the average intraoperative blood loss was significantly lower (p < 0.001) in the bipolar electrocautery technique group, while the intensity of local pain 4 and 24 hours after the operation was significantly higher (p < 0.001). Other variables showed no significant differences between the two groups. Conclusion Based on the findings of the present investigation, the bipolar electrocautery technique is suggested for tonsillectomy in children, while the cold dissection technique is preferred for adult patients.


Resumo Introdução A tonsilectomia é uma das cirurgias mais comuns de cabeça e pescoço em todo o mundo. Essa cirurgia é feita por diferentes métodos, os mais frequentes são a dissecção a frio e por eletrocauterização bipolar. Objetivo Este estudo foi feito para avaliar e comparar a morbidade pós-operatória na dissecção a frio e eletrocauterização bipolar. Método Este ensaio clínico prospectivo e randomizado foi feito em 534 pacientes submetidos a tonsilectomia no Vali-e-Asr Hospital de Birjand, no leste do Irã, de outubro de 2013 a outubro de 2015. Os pacientes foram selecionados de forma sistemática para o grupo submetido à técnica de dissecção a frio ou para o grupo com uso da técnica de eletrocauterização bipolar. Para a avaliação acerca da melhor técnica, os seguintes parâmetros foram registrados e comparados entre os dois grupos: tempo de cirurgia, quantidade de perda sanguínea intraoperatória, hemorragia pós-operatória, intensidade da dor local 4 e 24 horas após a cirurgia e ocorrência de náuseas e/ou vômitos. Os dados foram analisados no software SPSS (versão 22). O valor de p inferior a 0,5 foi considerado significante. Resultados Neste estudo, 51,7% dos participantes do grupo técnica de dissecção a frio e 50,6% do grupo técnica de eletrocauterização bipolar eram do sexo masculino. No grupo operado pela técnica de eletrocauterização bipolar a média de perda sanguínea intraoperatória foi significantemente menor (p < 0,001) em comparação à técnica de dissecção a frio, enquanto a intensidade da dor local 4 e 24 horas após a cirurgia foi significativamente maior (p < 0,001). As outras variáveis não apresentaram diferenças significantes entre os dois grupos. Conclusão Com base nos achados da presente investigação, para a tonsilectomia em crianças sugere-se o uso da técnica de eletrocauterização bipolar, enquanto a técnica de dissecção a frio é recomendada para pacientes adultos.

ABSTRACT

Tonsillectomy is one of the oldest and most common procedures worldwide. This surgery is performed by different methods include cold dissection technique (CDT) and bipolar electrocautery technique (BET). Assessment and comparison of postoperative outcomes in cold dissection and bipolar electrocautery is the aim of present study. This randomized controlled clinical trial study was conducted as double-blind on 534 patients. The enrolled patients underwent tonsillectomy in Vali-e-Asr Hospital of Birjand city from Oct. 2013-Oct. 2015. Al patients systematically allocated into two groups treated with cold dissection or bipolar electrocautery methods. Intensity of throat pain scores, Otalgia, analgesic consumption, resume normal diet, body temperature and also wound healing on 10th day after operation were measured and compared between the two groups. The gathered data were analyzed by SPSS software (Ver-22) and using necessary tests. The differences between studied groups less than 0.5 (p < 0.05) considered significant statically. 51.7 and 50.6% in the CDT and the BET groups were male respectively. In comparison between the groups the mean of pain scores 4 and 24 h after operation in the BET group were higher significantly (p < 0.001). Otalgia only 4 h after surgery was higher significantly in the BET group (p = 0.008). All the other studied parameters were significantly more desirable in the CDT group (p < 0.001). According to the findings of present study it seems that the CDT is safer and more favorable than the BET in tonsillectomy.

To date, most of studies have only focused on metabolic effects of dietary oils while recent evidence proposes that they can influence kidneys structure. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of long-term consumption of olive, cottonseed and sesame oils on renal morphology in rats. 70 male Wistar rats randomly assigned into seven equal groups and treated with standard diet (control), the standard diet enriched with 10% or 20% (W/W) of either olive oil (OLI10%, OLI20%), cottonseed oil (COT10%, COT20%) or sesame oil (SES10%, SES20%) for 5 months. Quantitative features of the kidney including kidney and cortex volumes and the number of glomeruli were analyzed stereologically. Moreover, kidney sections histologically were evaluated. All of the studied oils in low concentration had no devastating effects on renal morphology and also its pathological features. However, only in SES20% group, kidney volume as well as, cortical volume was higher than the control group. Besides, accumulation of carbohydrate macromolecules and renal fibrosis were markedly increased in SES20% group compared to the control. The results suggest that sesame oil, especially at high concentration, may lead to renal deformities as a result of histopathological changes such as dilatation, fibrosis, and tubular defects.

ABSTRACT

Monitoring variations in the upper airway narrowing during sleep is invasive and expensive. Since snoring sounds are generated by air turbulence and vibrations of the upper airway due to its narrowing; snoring sounds may be used as a non-invasive technique to assess upper airway narrowing. Our goal was to develop a subject-specific acoustic model of the upper airway to investigate the impacts of upper airway anatomy, e.g. length, wall thickness and cross-sectional area, on snoring sounds features. To have a subject-specific model for snoring generation, we used measurements of the upper airway length, cross-sectional area and wall thickness from every individual to develop the model. To validate the proposed model, in 20 male individuals, intensity and resonant frequencies of modeled snoring sounds were compared with those measured from recorded snoring sounds during sleep. Based on both modeled and measured results, we found the only factor that may positively and significantly contribute to snoring intensity was narrowing in the upper airway. Furthermore, measured resonant frequencies of snoring were inversely correlated with the upper airway length, which is a risk factor for upper airway collapsibility. These results encourage the use of snoring sounds analysis to assess the upper airway anatomy during sleep.

ABSTRACT

Mercury being one of the most toxic heavy metals has long been a focus of concern due to its gravest threats to human health and environment. Although multiple methods have been developed to detect and/or remove dissolved mercury, many require complicated procedures and sophisticated equipment. Here, we describe a simple surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) active ZnO/Ag nanoarrays that can detect Hg(2+), remove Hg(2+) and can be fully regenerated, not just from Hg(2+) contamination when heat-treated but also from the SERS marker when exposed to UV as a result of the self-cleaning ability of this schottky junction photocatalyst. The sensors are also highly selective because of the unique way mercury (among other chemicals) interacts with Ag nanoparticles, thus reducing its SERS activity.

ABSTRACT

Rostral fluid shift during sleep from the lower body part into the neck can increase neck circumference (NC) and narrow the upper airway. Such narrowing in the upper airway may increase turbulence of airflow passing through the upper airway; thus, induce snoring. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of changes in NC during sleep on snoring sound characteristics. Fifteen non-obese men slept supine, and their sleep was monitored by a regular polysomnography. Snoring sounds were recorded with a microphone attached to the neck. NC was measured before and after sleep with a measuring tape. Snoring sounds' average power was calculated in different frequency ranges of 100 - 4000 Hz, 100 - 150 Hz, 150 - 450 Hz, 450 - 600 Hz, 600 - 1200 Hz, 1200 - 1800 Hz, 1800 - 2500 Hz and 2500 - 4000 Hz. Statistical analysis showed that increases in NC after sleep were strongly correlated with higher average power of the snoring sounds in the frequency ranges of 100-4000 Hz (r=0.74, P=0.004), 100-150 Hz (r=0.70, P=0.008), 150-450 Hz (r=0.73, P=0.005), and 450 - 600 Hz (r= 0.65, P=0.025). These results encourage the use of snoring sound analysis for monitoring the effects of fluid accumulation in the neck in relation to sleep apnea.

ABSTRACT

This paper utilizes a statistical approach, the response surface optimization methodology, to determine the optimum conditions for the Acid Black 172 dye removal efficiency from aqueous solution by electrocoagulation. The experimental parameters investigated were initial pH: 4-10; initial dye concentration: 0-600 mg/L; applied current: 0.5-3.5 A and reaction time: 3-15 min. These parameters were changed at five levels according to the central composite design to evaluate their effects on decolorization through analysis of variance. High R2 value of 94.48% shows a high correlation between the experimental and predicted values and expresses that the second-order regression model is acceptable for Acid Black 172 dye removal efficiency. It was also found that some interactions and squares influenced the electrocoagulation performance as well as the selected parameters. Optimum dye removal efficiency of 90.4% was observed experimentally at initial pH of 7, initial dye concentration of 300 mg/L, applied current of 2 A and reaction time of 9.16 min, which is close to model predicted (90%) result.
