ABSTRACT

General anesthetics were first used over 170 years ago; however, the mechanisms of how general anesthetics induce loss of consciousness (LOC) remain unclear. Ciprofol, a novel intravenous anesthetic, has been developed by incorporating cyclopropyl into the chemical structure of propofol. This modification offers the benefits of rapid onset and minimal injection pain. Recent studies have revealed that the glutamatergic neurons of the lateral habenula (LHb) play a crucial role in modulating the LOC induced by propofol and sevoflurane. Nevertheless, the specific involvement of LHb in the anesthetic effects of ciprofol remains uncertain. Here, using targeted recombination in active populations (TRAP) combined with electroencephalogram/electromyography recordings and the righting reflex behavioral test, our study revealed that intravenous infusion of ciprofol for 1 h could lead to the induction of c-Fos expression in the LHb in mice. The combination of TRAP and gene ablation, aimed at selectively ablating ciprofol-activated neurons in the LHb, has been shown to facilitate the emergence of ciprofol anesthesia and decrease the proportion of delta waves during the emergence phase. Chemogenetic inhibition of these neurons produced a comparable effect, whereas chemogenetic activation resulted in the opposite outcome. Chemogenetic activation of ciprofol-activated neurons in the LHb delays the emergence of anesthesia and induces a deep hypnotic state during the emergence phase. Taken together, our findings suggest that LHb ciprofol-activated neurons modulate the state of consciousness and could potentially be targeted to manipulate consciousness during ciprofol anesthesia.

ABSTRACT

Background: Small intestinal lymphangioma is a very rare benign lesion. Thus far, the literature on small intestinal lymphangioma has mainly involved case reports. The present study retrospectively examined the clinical features of patients with a pathological diagnosis of small intestinal lymphangioma. Materials and methods: From January 2010 to January 2021, 15 patients were pathologically diagnosed with small intestinal lymphangioma. The age, gender, clinical manifestation, computed tomography (CT) findings, endoscopic findings, localization of the lesion, treatment method, complications, and follow-up were retrospectively analyzed. Results: Most of the patients had no symptoms, and those with symptoms had melena or abdominal pain. Lymphangioma was located in the duodenum in nine cases (60.0%), jejunum in two (13.3%), jejunal-ileal junction with mesentery involvement in one (6.7%) and ileum in three (20.0%). Three cases (20.0%) had multiple lesions, and the other 12 (80.0%) had single lesions. The median size of the lesions was 0.8 cm. Thirteen cases were found by endoscopy, and nine cases of them had white-colored spots on the surface. Ten cases (66.7%) underwent endoscopic treatment, three (20.0%) underwent surgical treatment, and two (13.3%) were followed up. Postoperative acute pancreatitis developed in one patient after endoscopic resection of duodenal papillary lymphangioma; postoperative abdominal bleeding occurred in one patient with jejunal lymphangioma who underwent partial small bowel resection. Conclusion: Small intestinal lymphangioma is extremely rare, and its clinical manifestations are non-specific. Endoscopy is of great value in the diagnosis of small intestinal lymphangioma. Depending on the clinical manifestations, the size, location and scope of the lesions, follow-up, endoscopic treatment and surgery can be selected.

ABSTRACT

Four experiments investigated the extent to which a limited pool of resources can be shared between different tasks performed simultaneously when it is efficient to do so. The experiments used a prioritized processing paradigm, in which stimuli for both a primary task and a background task were presented in each trial. If the primary-task stimulus required a response in a trial, participants made only that response. If the primary-task stimulus did not require a response, participants responded to the background task. The main manipulation was the relative probability that a response would be required to the primary versus background task. In some blocks, the majority of trials required responses to the primary task (Experiments 1 and 2: 80%; Experiments 3 and 4: 60%), whereas in other blocks the majority required responses to the background task. Background-task responses were substantially faster in blocks where they were more likely to be required, consistent with the idea that more capacity was allocated to them in these blocks. Backward compatibility effects on primary-task responses and stimulus-onset asynchrony effects on background-task responses provided further evidence of greater capacity allocation to the background task when there was a higher probability of responding to it. The results support the view that two tasks can be processed in parallel, with resources divided between them, when it is efficient to do so.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents an edge detection algorithm based on singular value eigenvector and gradient operator. In the proposed algorithm, the singular values of image blocks are first calculated, and the Sobel gradient template is extended to eight other directions. Then the gradient values of image pixels are determined according to the stability of the singular values of image blocks. The determination of gradient threshold is considered from both global and local aspects. After calculating the global and local gradient thresholds of the original image, the gradient threshold of the whole image is determined by weighting function. Then the edge pixels of the image are filtered according to the gradient threshold, and the edge information image of the original image is obtained. The experimental data show that the proposed algorithm can resist a certain degree of noise interference, and the accuracy and efficiency of edge extraction are better than other similar algorithms.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The elevation of plasma von Willebrand factor (vWF) has been proposed to be a predictor of lung cancer. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) causes endothelial activation, resulting in the secretion of vWF. However, the role of vWF in patients with T2DM complicated with lung cancer remains unclear. AIM: To investigate the clinical value of serum vWF as a tumor marker in patients with T2DM combined with lung adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS). METHODS: This study enrolled 43 patients with T2DM combined with lung AIS (T2DM + AIS group), 43 patients with T2DM alone (T2DM group), 43 patients with lung AIS alone (AIS group), and 43 healthy volunteers (control group). The serum levels of vWF, insulin-like growth factor 1, and insulin-like growth factor binding protein 3 were determined. Multiple linear stepwise regression was performed to determine the correlations among variables. RESULTS: Serum concentration of vWF in the T2DM + AIS group was significantly higher than those in the T2DM, AIS, and control groups (P < 0.05). Serum vWF levels in the T2DM and AIS groups were significantly higher than that in the control group (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in serum vWF level between the T2DM and AIS groups. In the T2DM + AIS group, serum vWF was independently associated and positively correlated with serum levels of insulin-like growth factor 1 and insulin-like growth factor binding protein 3 (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Serum vWF level may represent a novel biomarker for the early diagnosis of lung AIS.

ABSTRACT

The CANON process has the disadvantages of long start-up periods and unstable operation. In the SBAF system, under strictly controlled conditions of dissolved oxygen (DO) and temperature, a CANON process is started up in 51 days and is operated stably for 278 days using a new method of independent research and development. The results show that the maximum and average ARR are 98.9% and 95.1%, respectively. The maximum and average TNR are 85.9% and 75.1%, respectively. Furthermore, a small quantity of nitratenitrogen exists in this system. The microbial structure features of the sludge are analyzed by 16S rDNA macro high-throughput genome sequencing. It is verified that Proteobacteria is the main microorganism in the AOB, and Planctomycete Candidatus Brocadia is the main microorganism in the AnAOB. Both of them collaborate on total nitrogen removal in the CANON process.

ABSTRACT

Long period start-up is one of the main restraining factors of the single-stage completely autotrophic nitrogen removal over nitrite (CANON) process. This study investigated the fast start-up of the CANON process initiated by a submerged biological aerated filter (SBAF) method. With conventional activated sludge from the secondary sedimentation tank of municipal waste water treatment plants as the seed sludge, the CANON process was successfully started up after the acclimation of sludge microorganisms for 48 days under the experimental conditions of (30±2)℃,organic carbon free and controlled dissolved oxygen (stage Ⅰ:0.3-0.5mg·L-1;stage Ⅱ-Ⅳ:0.1-0.2mg·L-1),with the maximum removal rates of ammonia nitrogen and total nitrogen achieved at 99.9% and 86.5%,respectively.The population structure characteristics of microorganisms in the system were studied using high-throughput sequencing of 16S rDNA amplicon. The results demonstrated that the two dominant microbial strains in the system were Proteobacteria and Planctomycetes, accounting for 26.6% and 17.8%,respectively.The major contributors of nitrogen removal were Nitrosomonas in ß-Proteobacteria and Candidatus brocadia in Brocadiae.Through the above experiments,it was revealed that the investigated SBAF based CANON possesses had the advantages of fast start-up,efficient biological nitrogen removal and stable operation process.

ABSTRACT

The traditional biochemical treatment of printing and dyeing wastewater has limited efficiency. This study investigated whether H2O2 could strengthen the biological ability of the hydrolytic acidification/biological contact oxidation process (A/O), which effectively treats the printing and dyeing wastewater. After biofilm formation and the biochemical system startup and operation by H2O2, the system was successfully started and steadily operated when H2O2was added into reactor A with the H2O2 voluve fraction of 3 mL·L-1, doses of 100.0 mL, the flow velocity of 0.67 mL·min-1, and dosing frequency of once a day. The experimental results showed that the average removal efficiencies of COD, ammonia nitrogen, PVA, and color of printing and dyeing wastewater were 89.8%, 96.7%, 87.4%, and 92.1%, respectively. The microorganism community structures of reactor A and reactor O in this system were analyzed by high-throughput sequencing of 16S rDNA amplicon. The results demonstrated that the three dominant microbial strains in reactor A were Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Verrucomicrobia, and in reactor O were Planctomycetes, Proteobacteria, and Acidobacteria.

ABSTRACT

In order to understand the chromosome structure of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas cv. Xushu 18), molecular cytogenetic analyses were carried out on I. batatas. by using 45S rDNA fluorescence in situ hybridization (45S rDNA-FISH), self genomic in situ hybridization (self-GISH), and silver staining techniques. Twelve, sixteen, and eighteen regions were silver stained in the interphase nucleus of I. batatas. The results of FISH analysis demonstrated 16 or 18 signals with different intensity on chromosomes of I. batatas. Self-GISH analysis showed that the intensive signals on I. batatas mitotic chromosomes were distributed along the chromosomes. However, the signals located in centromeric, subcentromeric, and telomeric regions were stronger and denser than those in other regions.
