ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Describe the characteristics and changes in the profile of women who sought care after experiencing sexual violence (SV) during the first six months of the COVID-19 pandemic in a Brazilian city. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional retrospective study. Data from emergency care and legal abortion requests of women assisted at the Women's Health Care Center Hospital (School of Medical Sciences, University of Campinas, Brazil) due to SV experienced between March 23 and August 23, 2020 (Quarantine Group, QG), were collected and compared with data from the same period of the previous biennium (Comparison Group, CG). χ2 and Fisher's exact tests were used to compare groups; the significance level was 5%. RESULTS: Data for 236 women were analyzed; 70 women were included in the QG and 166 in the CG. In the QG, there was a restriction in the area of origin of women, with a higher proportion of women who lived in Campinas (P = 0.0007) and a higher frequency of chronic SV (P = 0,035). There were no rapes associated with the use of social media or apps in the QG, but 9.8% of women in the CG experienced rape associated with the use of social media or apps. There were higher rates of domestic violence (P = 0.022) and intimidation through physical force (P = 0.011) in the first two months. CONCLUSION: The COVID-19 quarantine affected the profile of women who sought care after experiencing SV. The quarantine resulted in changes in the area of origin of patients, hindering access to health services and leading to higher rates of chronic and domestic SV, particularly in the first 2 months of the pandemic.

ABSTRACT

To evaluate the microstructural characterization, mechanical properties and antimicrobial activity of acrylic resins incorporated with different concentrations of reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Specimens were made of self-cured and heat-cured acrylic resins for the control group and concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, and 3%. The microstructural characterization was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDS). For mechanical testing, flexural strength, and Knoop hardness tests were performed. Microbiological evaluations were performed by colony forming units (CFU) analysis, tetrazolium salt reduction (XTT), and SEM images. The modified acrylic resins showed increased mechanical properties at low concentrations (p < 0.05) and with reduced S. mutans (p < 0.05). Reduced graphene oxide interfered with the mechanical performance and microbiological properties of acrylic resins depending on the concentration of rGO, and type of polymerization and microorganism evaluated. The incorporation of graphene compounds into acrylic resins is an alternative to improve the antimicrobial efficacy and performance of the material.

ABSTRACT

Aim: To develop a ß-AgVO3 gel and evaluate its physicochemical stability and antifungal activity against Candida albicans. Materials & methods: The gel was prepared from the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ß-AgVO3. The physicochemical stability was evaluated by centrifugation, accelerated stability (AS), storage (St), pH, syringability, viscosity and spreadability tests and antifungal activity by the agar diffusion. Results: The MIC was 62.5 µg/ml. After centrifugation, AS and St gels showed physicochemical stability. Lower viscosity and higher spreadability were observed for the higher ß-AgVO3 concentration and the minimum force for extrusion was similar for all groups. Antifungal effect was observed only for the ß-AgVO3 gel with 20xMIC. Conclusion: The ß-AgVO3 gel showed physicochemical stability and antifungal activity.


We used silver and vanadium to make a gel that can kill fungi in the mouth. We looked at the color of the gel, it's smell and also checked how well it lasted. The gel turned yellow and had no smell and did not spoil for at least 2 months. When we tested the gel against a type of fungus, it worked as well as another medicine called chlorhexidine, which is sold in pharmacies. But when we compared it with another medicine called nystatin, our gel was not as effective in killing the fungus.

Esta coletânea nos conduz por experiências trilhadas por educandos (as) e educadores (as) à colheita da Especialização e Aperfeiçoamento em Educação Popular e Promoção de Territórios Saudáveis na Convivência com o Semiárido com participantes do Ceará e do Rio Grande do Norte. Esse processo formativo se desenvolveu como uma das estratégias da Política Nacional de Educação Popular em Saúde (PNEPS-SUS) em uma profícua articulação entre movimentos de educação popular em saúde e movimentos que atuam no campo das lutas do campo e da cidade. No primeiro volume desta coletânea intitulada "Entrelaçando arte, cultura e saúde: possibilidades de coracionar o cuidado com a vida" estão as produções construídas por esse conjunto de sujeitos sociais durante o curso nos trabalhos de conclusão do curso, articulados na temática da arte, cultura e saúde. Neste segundo volume das produções advindas desses trabalhos de conclusão de curso tem como foco a participação popular a partir das experiências nos territórios. Assim, essa obra intitulada "Vozes que vem dos territórios: a participação popular que emerge do cotidiano" evidencia a diversidade de trilhas que advêm dessa questão geral a fim de que os leitores (as) possam refletir sobre as diversas formas de participação social e popular presente nas comunidades e territórios. Esta obra está organizada em três seções, a saber: "Lutas e Organização Popular em Territórios Urbanos, do Campo e das Águas"; "Educação do campo e promoção da saúde" e "A força das mulheres, das juventudes e do controle social em contextos urbanos e comunidades tradicionais". ABSTRACT

In the search for alternatives to overcome the challenge imposed by drug resistance development in cancer treatment, the modulation of autophagy has emerged as a promising alternative that has achieved good results in clinical trials. Nevertheless, most of these studies have overlooked a novel and selective type of autophagy: chaperone-mediated autophagy (CMA). Following its discovery, research into CMA's contribution to tumor progression has accelerated rapidly. Therefore, we now understand that stress conditions are the primary signal responsible for modulating CMA in cancer cells. In turn, the degradation of proteins by CMA can offer important advantages for tumorigenesis, since tumor suppressor proteins are CMA targets. Such mutual interaction between the tumor microenvironment and CMA also plays a crucial part in establishing therapy resistance, making this discussion the focus of the present review. Thus, we highlight how suppression of LAMP2A can enhance the sensitivity of cancer cells to several drugs, just as downregulation of CMA activity can lead to resistance in certain cases. Given this panorama, it is important to identify selective modulators of CMA to enhance the therapeutic response.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to incorporate ß-AgVO3 and rGO into self-curing (SC) and heat-curing (HC) acrylic resins and to evaluate their physicochemical, mechanical, and antimicrobial properties while correlating them with the characterized material structure. Acrylic resin samples were prepared at 0 % (control), 0.5 %, 1 %, and 3 % for both nanoparticles. The microstructural characterization was assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) (n = 1) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) (n = 1). The physicochemical and mechanical tests included flexural strength (n = 10), Knoop hardness (n = 10), roughness (n = 10), wettability (n = 10), sorption (n = 10), solubility (n = 10), porosity (n = 10), and color evaluation (n = 10). The microbiological evaluation was performed by counting colony-forming units (CFU/mL) and cell viability (n = 8). The results showed that the ß-AgVO3 samples showed lower counts of Candida albicans, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Streptococcus mutans due to their promising physicochemical properties. The mechanical properties were maintained with the addition of ß-AgVO3. The rGO samples showed higher counts of microorganisms due to the increase in physicochemical properties. It can be concluded that the incorporation of ß-AgVO3 into acrylic resins could be an alternative to improve the antimicrobial efficacy and performance of the material.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Cannabinoids show great therapeutic potential, but their effect on anesthesia still remains unclear. Use of chronic recreational Cannabis in humans undergoing anesthetic procedures tends to require a higher dose when compared to non-users. On the other hand, studies on rodents and dogs have shown that cannabinoid agonists may potentiate certain anesthetics. This contrast of effects possibly occurs due to different time lengths of administration of different phytocannabinoids at different doses, and their distinct effects on the Endocannabinoid System, which is also affected by anesthetics such as propofol and isoflurane. Methods: Twenty-seven healthy male dogs, client-owned, ranging from 1 to 7 years, and from 5 to 35 kg were selected, mean weight 15.03±7.39 kg, with owners volunteering their animals to participate in the research performed in the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC). Dogs were randomized into 3 groups. The Control Group (CON, n = 9), receiving only Extra Virgin Olive Oil, the same oil-base used in the treatment groups. Group 2 (G2, n = 9) received 2 mg/kg of total phytocannabinoids, and Group 3 (G3, n = 9) received 6 mg/kg of total phytocannabinoids. All groups received their treatments transmucosally, 75 min before their induction with propofol. Heart and respiratory rate, blood pressure, temperature and sedation were evaluated prior to, and at 30, 60, and 75 min after administration of the fsCBD-rich extract or Placebo extract. Preanesthetic medication protocol was also included across all treatment groups, 15 min before induction. Parametric data was analyzed with one-way ANOVA, followed by Student-Newman-Keuls (SNK) if significant statistical differences were found. Non-parametric data was analyzed using Friedman's test, followed by Dunn test for comparisons between all timepoints in the same group. Kruskal-Wallis followed by Dunn was utilized for between groups comparisons. Propofol dose necessary for induction was analyzed through One-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's Multiple Comparisons Test, using Instat by Graphpad, and differences were considered statistically significant when p < 0.05. Our analysis assessed if statistical significance was present between time points in the same group, and between groups in the same time points. Results: In our study, 6 mg/kg of total phytocannabinoids were able to reduce the dose of propofol necessary for induction by 23% when compared to the control group. The fsCBD-rich extract did not produce significant sedation within or between groups, although statistically significant differences in heart rate and systolic blood pressure were found. Discussion: Our findings indicate that phytocannabinoids could be an adjunct option in anesthesia, although further research is necessary to better confirm this data. Additionally, further research is needed to determine the best dosage, delivery method, time for administration, ideal molecular profile for desired effects, safety, drug-drug interactions, and transurgical effects.

OBJECTIVES: To incorporate the nanostructured silver vanadate decorated with silver nanoparticles (AgVO3) into denture base materials: heat-cured (HC) and 3D printed (3DP) resins, at concentrations of 2.5 %, 5 %, and 10 %; and to evaluate the antimicrobial activity in two multi-species biofilm: (1) Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, and Streptococcus mutans, (2) Candida albicans, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus, and the wettability. METHODS: The AgVO3 was added to the HC powder, and printed samples were coated with 3DP with AgVO3 incorporated. After biofilm formation, the antimicrobial activity was evaluated by colony forming units per milliliter (CFU/mL), metabolic activity, and epifluorescence microscopy. Wettability was assessed by the contact angles with water and artificial saliva. RESULTS: In biofilm (1), HC-5 % and HC-10 % showed activity against S. mutans, HC-10 % against C. glabrata, and HC-10 % and 3DP-10 % had higher CFU/mL of C. albicans. 3DP-5 % had lower metabolic activity than the 3DP control. In biofilm (2), HC-10 % reduced S. aureus and P. aeruginosa, and HC-5 %, 3DP-2.5 %, and 3DP-5 % reduced S. aureus. 3DP incorporated with AgVO3, HC-5 %, and HC-10 % reduced biofilm (2) metabolic activity. 3DP-5 % and 3DP-10 % increased wettability with water and saliva. CONCLUSION: HC-10 % was effective against C. glabrata, S. mutans, P. aeruginosa, and S. aureus, and HC-5 % reduced S. mutans and S. aureus. For 3DP, 2.5 % and 5 % reduced S. aureus. The incorporation of AgVO3 into both resins reduced the metabolic activity of biofilms but had no effect on C. albicans. The wettability of the 3DP with water and saliva increased with the addition of AgVO3. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The incorporation of silver vanadate into the denture base materials provides antimicrobial efficacy and can prevent the aggravation of oral and systemic diseases. The incorporation of nanomaterials into printed resins is challenging and the coating is an alternative to obtain the inner denture base with antimicrobial effect.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to answer the question formulated according to the PICO strategy: 'Which essential oils show antimicrobial activity against biofilms formed on dental acrylic resin?' composed by population (dental acrylic resin), intervention (application of essential oils), comparison (denture cleansers, antifungal drugs, chlorhexidine, and oral mouthwashes), and outcome (antibiofilm activity). In vitro experimental studies evaluating the activity of EOs on biofilm formed on acrylic resin were included. PRISMA guidelines were followed, and the search was performed in the PubMed, Science Direct, Embase, and Lilacs databases and in the gray literature using Google Scholar and ProQuest in December 2023. A manual search of the reference lists of the included primary studies was performed. Of the 1467 articles identified, 37 were selected for full-text reading and 12 were included. Twelve EOs were evaluated, of which 11 showed activity against Candida spp., 3 against Staphylococcus aureus, and 1 against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The EOs of Cymbopogon citratus, Cinnamomum zeylanicum, and Cymbopogon nardus showed higher action than chlorhexidine, C. nardus higher than Listerine, C. citratus higher than nystatin, and Melaleuca alternifolia higher than fluconazole and nystatin. However, chlorhexidine was more effective than Lippia sidoides and Salvia officinalis, sodium hypochlorite was more effective than L. sidoides, nystatin was more effective than Zingiber officinale, Amphotericin B more effective than Eucalyptus globulus and M. alternifolia. In conclusion, the EOs of C. zeylanicum, C. citratus, C. nardus, and M. alternifolia showed antimicrobial activity to reduce biofilm on dental acrylic resin.

ABSTRACT

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Gel formulations containing antimicrobials are a potential alternative for the development of new medicines for the treatment of denture stomatitis (DS). However, whether they are more effective than antifungal drugs is unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematic review was to identify whether gels formulated with antimicrobial substances are more effective and biocompatible for the treatment of DS than antifungal drugs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This systematic review was structured according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO; CRD42022379510). Searches were performed in the PubMed, Lilacs, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar databases in November 2022. Randomized and nonrandomized clinical trials comparing the efficacy of experimental gels and conventional antifungals in the treatment of DS were included. RESULTS: Gels formulated with Zataria multiflora essential oil and clove and cinnamon extracts showed higher antimicrobial efficacy compared with miconazole and clotrimazole. Formulations containing Uncaria tomentosa, Punica granatum, and propolis extract showed similar efficacy to nystatin and miconazole. Two formulations containing P. granatum were less effective than nystatin and miconazole. Gels of Z. multiflora and miconazole induced adverse effects including burning, itching, nausea, and vomiting. The included studies did not evaluate the biocompatibility of the gels. CONCLUSIONS: Gels formulated with natural antimicrobials such as Z. multiflora, U. tomentosa, P. granatum, propolis, and clove and cinnamon showed higher or similar antimicrobial efficacy to conventional antifungals in the treatment of DS. The biocompatibility of experimental gels based on natural agents should be evaluated.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of incorporating the antimicrobial nanomaterial ß-AgVO3 into orthodontic resin, focusing on degree of conversion, surface characteristics, microhardness, adhesion properties, and antimicrobial activity. METHODS: The 3 M Transbond XT resin underwent modification, resulting in three groups (Control, 2.5% addition, 5% addition) with 20 specimens each. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy assessed monomer conversion. Laser confocal microscopy examined surface roughness, and microhardness was evaluated using Knoop protocols. Shear strength was measured before and after artificial aging on 36 premolar teeth. Microbiological analysis against S. mutans and S. sanguinis was conducted using the agar diffusion method. RESULTS: Degree of conversion remained unaffected by time (P = 0.797), concentration (P = 0.438), or their interaction (P = 0.187). The 5% group exhibited the lowest surface roughness, differing significantly from the control group (P = 0.045). Microhardness showed no significant differences between concentrations (P = 0.740). Shear strength was highest in the control group (P < 0.001). No significant differences were observed in the samples with or without thermocycling (P = 0.759). Microbial analysis revealed concentration-dependent variations, with the 5% group exhibiting the largest inhibition halo (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Incorporating ß-AgVO3 at 2.5% and 5% concentrations led to significant differences in surface roughness, adhesion, and antimicrobial activity. Overall, resin modification positively impacted degree of conversion, surface characteristics, microhardness, and antimicrobial activity. Further research is warranted to determine clinically optimal concentrations that maximize antimicrobial benefits while minimizing adverse effects on adhesion properties. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Incorporating ß-AgVO3 into orthodontic resin could improve patient quality of life by prolonging intervention durability and reducing the impact of cariogenic microorganisms. The study's findings also hold promise for the industry, paving the way for the development of new materials with antimicrobial properties for potential applications in the health sector.

Objective.to develop an optimization and training pipeline for a classification model based on principal component analysis and logistic regression using neuroimages from PET with 2-[18F]fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG PET) for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD).Approach.as training data, 200 FDG PET neuroimages were used, 100 from the group of patients with AD and 100 from the group of cognitively normal subjects (CN), downloaded from the repository of the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). Regularization methods L1 and L2 were tested and their respective strength varied by the hyperparameter C. Once the best combination of hyperparameters was determined, it was used to train the final classification model, which was then applied to test data, consisting of 192 FDG PET neuroimages, 100 from subjects with no evidence of AD (nAD) and 92 from the AD group, obtained at the Centro de Diagnóstico por Imagem (CDI).Main results.the best combination of hyperparameters was L1 regularization andC≈ 0.316. The final results on test data were accuracy = 88.54%, recall = 90.22%, precision = 86.46% and AUC = 94.75%, indicating that there was a good generalization to neuroimages outside the training set. Adjusting each principal component by its respective weight, an interpretable image was obtained that represents the regions of greater or lesser probability for AD given high voxel intensities. The resulting image matches what is expected by the pathophysiology of AD.Significance.our classification model was trained on publicly available and robust data and tested, with good results, on clinical routine data. Our study shows that it serves as a powerful and interpretable tool capable of assisting in the diagnosis of AD in the possession of FDG PET neuroimages. The relationship between classification model output scores and AD progression can and should be explored in future studies.

Resumo Objetivos: analisar os fatores associados à insegurança na realização das atividades laborais durante a pandemia de COVID-19 entre profissionais de saúde bucal do Sistema Único de Saúde do Ceará. Métodos: estudo transversal com dados secundários disponibilizados pela Coordenadoria de Atenção à Saúde do Ceará, coletados em maio de 2020. Foram construídos modelos de regressão logística. Resultados: participaram 801 profissionais, dos quais 72,8% eram cirurgiões-dentistas, 73,9% relataram não ter recebido todos os equipamentos de proteção individual (EPI) recomendados e 58,2% relataram não se sentirem seguros para realizar atividades laborais. Na análise ajustada, foram associados à insegurança laboral: maior tempo de formação (RC=1,90; IC95%: 1,12; 3,20), vínculo empregatício efetivo (RC=1,85; IC95%: 1,15; 2,99) e não recebimento de todos os EPI recomendados (RC=1,84; IC95%: 1,16; 2,91); enquanto a chance de insegurança foi menor entre os profissionais que atuavam no nível secundário de atenção à saúde (RC=0,52; IC95%: 0,28; 0,96). Conclusão: os profissionais relataram situação de insegurança laboral durante a primeira onda da pandemia. O estudo revelou a necessidade de melhorias nas condições de trabalho com distribuição de EPI de forma equitativa em todo o estado, garantindo um exercício laboral mais seguro.


Abstract Objectives: to analyze the factors associated with workplace insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic among oral healthcare providers of the Unified Health System of the state of Ceará. Methods: cross-sectional study with secondary data made available by the Health Care Coordination, which were collected in May 2020. Logistic regression models were constructed. Results: in total, 801 professionals participated in this research, of whom 72.8% were dentists, 73.9% reported receiving only some of the recommended Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and 58.2% reported feeling unsafe to carry out work activities. In the adjusted analysis, the following factors were associated with workplace insecurity: permanent employment (OR=1.85; 95%CI: 1.15; 2.99) and not receiving all the recommended PPE (OR=1.84; 95%CI: 1.16; 2.91); whereas the chance of feeling insecure was higher among dental assistants and technicians (OR=2.13; 95%CI 1.34; 3.40) than among dental surgeons. Conclusion: professionals reported workplace insecurity during the first wave of the pandemic. This study shows the need for improving working conditions with equal distribution of PPE throughout the state, ensuring safer working conditions.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to review systematically the literature about the antimicrobial action of evaluated cleansers on the Co-Cr alloy of RPD. The search was conducted in MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, Lilacs, Embase and Science Direct May, 2022. The review was performed based on PRISMA guidelines and recorded in Open Science Framework. Independent reviewers performed the search, selection, extraction, and analysis of the data. The risk of bias of the in vitro and clinical trials studies was analyzed by the Joanna Briggs Institute tool. A total of 187 articles were found and 9 were included. The cleansers that showed antimicrobial action were 2% and 5.25% sodium hypochlorite, 0.12% chlorhexidine and NitrAdine effervescent tablet. Polident, Corega Tabs effervescent tablets and 5 mg/mL chitosan solution showed intermediate effects. Propolis and green tea toothpaste were not effective. Three articles presented a high risk of bias and 6, low risk. The cleansers that showed the highest antimicrobial efficacy on Co-Cr alloy were 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate and NitrAdine and can be safely used on RPD framework.

ABSTRACT

Planted forest soils can have great potential for CO2-C sequestration, mainly due to belowground C inputs, which impact deep soil C (DSC) accumulation. However, there are still gaps in understanding the CO2 emission dynamics in eucalypt plantations. Therefore, we used isotopic techniques to investigate the dynamics of the soil surface CO2-C flux and CO2-C concentration with depth for a eucalypt plantation influenced by different C inputs (above- and belowground). The gas evaluations were carried in depth the root to valuation of root priming effect (RPE) was calculated. In addition, measurements of the plant (C-fine root and C-litterfall) and soil (total organic carbon - TOC, total nitrogen - TN, soil moisture - SM, and soil temperature - ST) were performed. After planting the eucalypt trees, there was an increase in the soil surface CO2-C flux with plant growth. Root growth contributed greatly to the soil surface CO2-C flux, promoting greater surface RPE over time. In comparison to the other factors, SM had a greater influence on litterfall decomposition and root respiration. It was not possible to detect losses in TOC and TN in the different soil layers for the 31-month-old eucalypt. However, the 40-month-old eucalypt showed a positive RPE with depth, indicating possible replacement of DSC ("old C") by rhizodeposition-C ("new C") in the soil. Thus, in eucalyptus plantations, aboveground plant growth influences CO2 emissions on the soil surface, while root growth and activity influence C in deeper soil layers. This information indicates the need for future changes in forest management, with a view to reducing CO2 emissions.
