ABSTRACT

Anthelmintics are drugs used for controlling pathogenic helminths in animals and plants. The natural compound betaine and the recently developed synthetic compound monepantel are both anthelmintics that target the acetylcholine receptor ACR-23 and its homologs in nematodes. Here, we present cryo-electron microscopy structures of ACR-23 in apo, betaine-bound, and betaine- and monepantel-bound states. We show that ACR-23 forms a homo-pentameric channel, similar to some other pentameric ligand-gated ion channels (pLGICs). While betaine molecules are bound to the classical neurotransmitter sites in the inter-subunit interfaces in the extracellular domain, monepantel molecules are bound to allosteric sites formed in the inter-subunit interfaces in the transmembrane domain of the receptor. Although the pore remains closed in betaine-bound state, monepantel binding results in an open channel by wedging into the cleft between the transmembrane domains of two neighboring subunits, which causes dilation of the ion conduction pore. By combining structural analyses with site-directed mutagenesis, electrophysiology and in vivo locomotion assays, we provide insights into the mechanism of action of the anthelmintics monepantel and betaine.

ABSTRACT

To study the effects of caspase inhibitors on hemodynamics and inflammatory factors in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) model rats. Sixty healthy male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups, namely, the control group, ARDS group and ARDS + Caspase inhibitor group, with 20 rats in each group. The control group was intraperitoneally injected with 2 mL/kg saline, and the ARDS model group was established by intraperitoneally injecting 4 mg/kg Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), ARDS + Caspase inhibitor group was adminstered 20 mg/kg caspase inhibitor after intraperitoneal LPS injection. Changes in pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) at 6 and 12 h before and after administration were recorded. Moreover, arterial blood gas was evaluated with a blood gas analyzer and changes in the partial pressure of O2 (PaO2), partial pressure of CO2 (PaCO2), partial pressure of O2/fraction of inspired O2 (PaO2/FiO2) were evaluated. In addition, the lung wet/dry weight (W/D) ratio and inflammatory factor levels in lung tissue were determined. Finally, pathological sections were used to determine the pulmonary artery media thickness (MT), MT percentage (MT%), and the degree of muscle vascularization. The pulmonary arterial pressure of rats was determined at several time points. Compared with the control group, the model group had a significantly increased pulmonary arterial pressure at each time point (P < 0.01), and the mean arterial pressure significantly increased at 6 h (P < 0.05). Compared with that of rats in the model group, the pulmonary arterial pressure of rats in drug administration group was significantly reduced at each time point after administration (P < 0.01), and the mean arterial pressure was significantly reduced at 6 h (P < 0.05). The arterial blood gas analysis showed that compared with those in the control group, PaO2, PaCO2 and PaO2/FiO2 in the model group were significantly reduced (P < 0.01), and PaO2, PaCO2 and PaO2/FiO2 were significantly increased after caspase inhibitor treatment (P < 0.05 or 0.01). The levels of the inflammatory mediators tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the model group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P < 0.01), and they were significantly decreased after caspase inhibitor treatment (P < 0.01). In the model group, pulmonary artery MT, MT% and the degree of muscle vascularization were significantly increased (P < 0.05 or 0.01), and pulmonary artery MT and the degree of muscle vascularization were significantly reduced after caspase inhibitor treatment (P < 0.05 or 0.01). Apoptosis Repressor with a Caspase Recuitment Domain (ARC) can alleviate the occurrence and development of pulmonary hypertension (PH) by affecting hemodynamics and reducing inflammation.

ABSTRACT

Dynamic impacts of short-term enrofloxacin (ENR) exposure on juvenile marine fish are not well understood, and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We therefore investigated the accumulation and elimination of ENR in the liver of juvenile black seabream Acanthopagrus schlegelii. Meanwhile, the dynamic alterations of biochemical parameters and liver transcriptomes after short-term bath immersion and withdrawal treatment were explored. The results indicated that the contents of ENR in the liver were significantly increased after bath administration for 24 h, and then quickly declined to very low concentrations along with the decontamination time increasing. Judging from the changes in biochemical indicators and liver transcriptomic alterations, 0.5 and 1 mg/L ENR exposure for 24 h triggered oxidative stress, impairment of immune system, as well as aberrant lipid metabolism via differential molecular pathways. Interestingly, biochemical and transcriptome analysis as well as integrated biomarker response (IBR) values showed that more significant changes appeared in 1 mg/L ENR group at decontamination periods, which indicated that the impact of high dose ENR on juvenile A. schlegelii may persist even after depuration for 7 days. These results revealed that the risk of short-term bath of 1 mg/L ENR should not be overlooked even after depuration period. Therefore, attention should be paid to the dosage control when administering the drug to juvenile A. schlegelii, and the restoration of physiological disturbance may be an important factor in formulating a reasonable treatment plan.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: EEG reactivity is a predictor for neurological outcome in comatose patients after cardiac arrest (CA); however, its application is limited by variability in stimulus types and visual assessment. We aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of the quantitative analysis of EEG reactivity induced by standardized electrical stimulation and for early prognostication in this population. METHODS: This prospective observational study recruited post-CA comatose patients in Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University (Beijing, China) between January 2016 and June 2023. EEG reactivity to electrical or traditional pain stimulation was randomly performed via visual and quantitative analysis. Neurological outcome within 6 months was dichotomized as good (Cerebral Performance Categories, CPC 1-2) or poor (CPC 3-5). RESULTS: Fifty-eight post-CA comatose patients were admitted, and 52 patients were included in the final analysis, of which 19 (36.5%) had good outcomes. EEG reactivity induced with the electrical stimulation had superior performance to the traditional pain stimulation for good outcome prediction (quantitative analysis: AUC 0.932 vs. 0.849, p = 0.048). When using the electrical stimulation, the AUC of EEG reactivity to predict good outcome by visual analysis was 0.838, increasing to 0.932 by quantitative analysis (p = 0.039). Comparing to the traditional pain stimulation by visual analysis, the AUC of EEG reactivity for good prognostication by the electrical stimulation with quantitative analysis was significantly improved (0.932 vs. 0.770, p = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS: EEG reactivity induced by the standardized electrical stimulation in combination with quantitative analysis is a promising formula for post-CA comatose patients, with increased predictive accuracy.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to conduct an umbrella review of meta-analyses to synthesize the existing evidence regarding the relationship between vitamin D receptor (VDR) polymorphism and breast cancer (BC) risk. A comprehensive search was performed across multiple databases, including Embase, PubMed, Scopus, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and the Web of Science. The investigation included 17 meta-analyses for the BsmI polymorphism, 6 for the Cdx2 polymorphism, and 6 for the Poly (A) polymorphism. Among the 119 datasets analyzed, only 6 (5 %) reported statistically significant outcomes (p < 0.05), comprising 2 comparisons for VDR BsmI polymorphism (3 %), 1 for VDR Cdx-2 polymorphism (4 %), and 3 for VDR Poly (A) polymorphism (14 %), across various genetic models. Notably, significant heterogeneity was observed in 82 comparisons, and publication bias was detected in 16 comparisons. Furthermore, a substantial proportion (86 %) of the included studies exhibited critically low methodological quality. In conclusion, our findings suggest that VDR polymorphism (BsmI, Cdx-2, and Poly (A)) is not strongly associated with BC risk in the general population.

ABSTRACT

Well-established knowledge about inversion-symmetric Bi2TexSe3-x topological insulators characterizes the promising new-generation quantum device. Noticeably, the inversion asymmetric phase containing different surface electronic structures may create an extra topological phenomenon pointing to a new device paradigm. Herein, Janus Bi2TeSe2 single-crystal nanosheets with an unconventional stacking sequence of Se-Bi-Se-Bi-Te are realized via chemical vapor deposition growth, which is clarified by atomically resolved AC-STEM and elemental mapping. An obvious polarization-dependent second-harmonic generation with a representative 6-fold rotational symmetry is detected due to the broken out-of-plane mirror symmetry in this system. Low-temperature transport measurements display a strange metal-like linear-in-temperature resistivity. Anomalous conductance peaks under low magnetic fields induced by the weak antilocalization effect of topological surface states and the two-dimensional transport-dominated anisotropic magnetoresistance are revealed. These findings correlate the Janus Bi2TeSe2 phase with emerging physics topics, which would inspire fresh thoughts in well-developed Bi3TexSe3-x topological insulators and open up opportunities for exploring hybrid nonlinear optoelectronic topological devices.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Generalized muscle weakness is the primary characteristic of sarcopenia. Handgrip strength (HGS) is widely employed to detect muscle weakness. However, knee extension strength (KES) declines much earlier and more pronounced than HGS, and there is a stronger correlation between KES and functional performance. Therefore, KES may be a more appropriate proxy for identifying muscle weakness compared to HGS. The purpose of this review was to clarify the KES measurement towards a standardized approach and summarize the cut-off points for KES. METHODS: A literature search was conducted in Web of Science, PubMed, Elsevier, Scopus and Medline databased up to July 10th, 2023. RESULTS: A total of 12 articles were ultimately included in this review, which proposed various cut-off points for KES. Notably, these studies exhibited high heterogeneities, including diverse living settings for participants, KES measurement, methods for KES normalization, methodologies for determining cut-off points and study designs. CONCLUSIONS: No consensus on cut-off points for KES was reached due to the heterogeneities in KES measurement and normalized methods among studies. To enhance the comparability among studies and facilitate the sarcopenia screening framework, a standardized approach for KES measurement and KES normalization are needed. Regarding KES measurement, the hand-held dynamometer-based isometric KES is easy to access and ideally suited for both clinical and community settings, while isokinetic KES, representing the gold standard, is preferred for research settings. Additionally, it is suggested to normalize isometric KES to body weight (BW), while normalizing isokinetic KES to allometrically scaled BW.

ABSTRACT

The Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System 29-item Profile version 2.1 (PROMIS-29 V2.1) is a widely utilized self-reported instrument for assessing health outcomes from the patients' perspectives. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the PROMIS-29 V2.1 Chinese version among patients with hematological malignancy. Conducted as a cross-sectional, this research was approved by the Medical Ethical Committee of the Institute of Hematology and Blood Diseases Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College (registration number QTJC2022002-EC-1). We employed convenience sampling to enroll eligible patients with hematological malignancy from four tertiary hospitals in Tianjin, Shandong, Jiangsu, and Anhui province in China between June and August 2023. Participants were asked to complete a socio-demographic information questionnaire, the PROMIS-29 V2.1, and the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General (FACT-G). We assessed the reliability, ceiling and floor effects, structural, convergent discriminant and criterion validity of the PROMIS-29 V2.1. A total of 354 patients with a mean age of 46.93 years was included in the final analysis. The reliability of the PROMIS-29 V2.1 was affirmed, with Cronbach's α for the domains ranging from 0.787 to 0.968. Except sleep disturbance, the other six domains had ceiling effects, which were seen on physical function (26.0%), anxiety (37.0%), depression (40.4%), fatigue (18.4%), social roles (18.9%) and pain interference (43.2%), respectively. Criterion validity was supported by significant correlations between the PROMIS-29 V2.1 and FACT-G scores, as determined by the Spearman correlation test (P < 0.001). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) indicated a good model fit, with indices of χ2/df (2.602), IFI (0.960), and RMSEA (0.067). The Average Variance Extracted (AVE) values for the seven dimensions of PROMIS-29 V2.1, ranging from 0.500 to 0.910, demonstrated satisfactory convergent validity. Discriminant validity was confirmed by ideal √AVE values. The Chinese version of the PROMIS-29 V2.1 profile has been validated as an effective instrument for assessing symptoms and functions in patients with hematological malignancy, underscoring its reliability and applicability in this specific patient group.

ABSTRACT

A magnetic composite (Fe3O4@SiO2@PNIPAM-co-NHMA) with high adsorption capacity and recoverability was developed for the enrichment and determination of flavonoids in Scutellaria Radix (SR). A magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) technique using Fe3O4@SiO2@PNIPAM-co-NHMA absorbent in combination with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was developed for selectively enrichment and determination of the biologically active flavonoids in the aqueous extract of SR, including baicalein, baicalin, wogonoside and wogonin. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the magnetic adsorbent could adsorb up to 77.0 ± 0.98 % - 98.15 ± 0.15 % of four representative flavonoids from SR, with elution rates varying from 55.10 ± 0.25 % to 91.94 ± 1.85 %. The limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quantitation (LOQ) were 0.01-0.35 µg/mL and 0.03-0.98 µg/mL, respectively. In addition, it remained effective after six replicates, demonstrating its potential as a recoverable adsorbent for enriching flavonoids in traditional Chinese medicine.

ABSTRACT

Accurate assessment of evapotranspiration (ETa) and crop coefficient (Kc) is crucial for optimizing irrigation practices in water-scarce regions. While satellite-based surface energy balance models offer a promising solution, their application to sparse canopies like apple orchards requires specific validation. This study investigated the spatial and temporal dynamics of ETa and Kc in a drip-irrigated 'Pink Lady' apple orchard under Mediterranean conditions over three growing seasons (2012/13, 2013/14, 2014/15). The METRIC model, incorporating calibrated sub-models for leaf area index (LAI), surface roughness (Zom), and soil heat flux (G), was employed to estimate ETa and Kc. These estimates were validated against field-scale Eddy Covariance data. Results indicated that METRIC overpredicted Kc and ETa with errors less than 10 %. These findings highlight the potential of the calibrated METRIC model as a valuable decision-making tool for irrigation management in apple orchards.

ABSTRACT

At present, graphite is a widely used anode material in commercial lithium-ion batteries for its low cost, but the large volume expansion (about 10%) after fully lithiated makes the material prone to cracking and even surface stripping in the cycle. Therefore, the development of zero-strain anode materials (volume change <1%) is of great significance. LiAl5O8 is a zero-strain insertion anode material with a high theoretical specific capacity. However, the Li+ storage mechanism remains unclear, and the cycle life as well as fast-charging capability need to be greatly improved to meet the practical requirements. In this study, LiAl5O8 nanorods are prepared by utilizing aluminum ethoxide nanowires as a soft template and doped with the Zr element to further improve the Li+ diffusion coefficient and electronic conductivity, which in turn improves cycle and rate performances. The Zr-doped LiAl5O8 presents a high reversible capacity of 227.2 mAh g-1 after 20,000 cycles under 5 A g-1, which significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art anode materials. In addition, the Li+ storage mechanisms of LiAl5O8 and Zr-doped LiAl5O8 are clearly clarified with a variety of characterization techniques including nuclear magnetic resonance. This work greatly promotes the practical process of zero-strain insertion anode materials.

Marine litter pollution poses a significant threat to offshore ecosystems, eliciting widespread concern. We investigated seafloor litter patterns in the Pearl River Estuary and adjacent coastal waters of China in 2023 via bottom trawl survey. Average number and weight densities were found to be 154.34 ± 30.95 n/km2 and 2384.63 ± 923.98 g/km2, respectively. Plastic was the most abundant material by number density (79.07 %), and rubber the highest by weight density (22.93 %). Overall number density varied from 40.50 ± 22.50 to 221.13 ± 52.44 n/km2, with the highest in Daya Bay and the lowest in Guanghai Bay. Weight density varied from 189.93 ± 71.94 to 5386.70 ± 3050.30 g/km2, with the highest in Qiao Island and the lowest in Honghai Bay. The main source was plastic bags and wrappers. The Pearl River Delta and Daya Bay were identified as seafloor litter distribution hotspots. Controlling plastic waste input is crucial for reducing seafloor litter in the Pearl River Estuary.

ABSTRACT

Little is known about the independent and joint effects of the energy-adjusted dietary inflammatory index (E-DII) and dietary diversity score (DDS) on sarcopenia and its components (low muscle mass, low muscle strength, and low physical performance). A total of 155,669 UK Biobank participants with ≥1 (maximum 5) 24 h dietary assessments were included in this cross-sectional analysis. We used logistic regression models to investigate the associations of E-DII and DDS with sarcopenia and its three components. We further examined the joint effects of E-DII and DDS on sarcopenia and its components using additive and multiplicative interaction analyses. We observed that lower E-DII and higher DDS were associated with lower odds of sarcopenia and its components. There were significant joint associations of E-DII and DDS with sarcopenia and low physical performance (p-interaction < 0.05) on the multiplicative interactive scale. Our study suggests that lower dietary inflammatory potential and higher dietary diversity might be important protective factors against sarcopenia and its components. More cases of sarcopenia and low physical performance might be preventable by adherence to a more anti-inflammatory diet combined with a higher dietary diversity.

ABSTRACT

Cancer of unknown primary (CUP) site poses diagnostic challenges due to its elusive nature. Many cases of CUP manifest as pleural and peritoneal serous effusions. Leveraging cytological images from 57,220 cases at four tertiary hospitals, we developed a deep-learning method for tumor origin differentiation using cytological histology (TORCH) that can identify malignancy and predict tumor origin in both hydrothorax and ascites. We examined its performance on three internal (n = 12,799) and two external (n = 14,538) testing sets. In both internal and external testing sets, TORCH achieved area under the receiver operating curve values ranging from 0.953 to 0.991 for cancer diagnosis and 0.953 to 0.979 for tumor origin localization. TORCH accurately predicted primary tumor origins, with a top-1 accuracy of 82.6% and top-3 accuracy of 98.9%. Compared with results derived from pathologists, TORCH showed better prediction efficacy (1.677 versus 1.265, P < 0.001), enhancing junior pathologists' diagnostic scores significantly (1.326 versus 1.101, P < 0.001). Patients with CUP whose initial treatment protocol was concordant with TORCH-predicted origins had better overall survival than those who were administrated discordant treatment (27 versus 17 months, P = 0.006). Our study underscores the potential of TORCH as a valuable ancillary tool in clinical practice, although further validation in randomized trials is warranted.

PURPOSE: Through three neurocritical care unit (NCCU) surveys in China, we tried to understand the development status of neurocritical care and clarify its future development. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional survey method and self-report questionnaires, the number and quality of NCCUs were investigated through three steps: administering the questionnaire, sorting the survey data, and analyzing the survey data. RESULTS: At the second and third surveys, the number of NCCUs (76/112/206) increased by 47% and 84%, respectively. The NCCUs were located in tertiary grade A hospitals or teaching hospitals (65/100/181) in most provinces (24/28/29). The numbers of full-time doctors (359/668/1337) and full-time nurses (904/1623/207) in the NCCUs increased, but the doctor-bed ratio and nurse-bed ratio were still insufficient (0.4:1 and 1.3:1). CONCLUSION: In the past 20 years, the growth rate of NCCUs in China has accelerated, while the allocation of medical staff has been insufficient. Although most NCCU hospital bed facilities and instruments and equipment tend to be adequate, there are obvious defects in some aspects of NCCUs.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, the incidence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has increased, but the etiology and pathogenesis remain unclear. In this narrative review, we review and systematically summarize the methods used to construct animal models to study ASD and the related behavioral studies based on recent literature. Utilization of various ASD animal models can complement research on the etiology, pathogenesis, and core behaviors of ASD, providing information and a foundation for further basic research and clinical treatment of ASD.

While the diversity of species formation is broadly acknowledged, significant debate exists regarding the universal nature of hybrid species formation. Through an 18-year comprehensive study of all Populus species on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, 23 previously recorded species and 8 new species were identified. Based on morphological characteristics, these can be classified into three groups: species in section Leucoides, species with large leaves, and species with small leaves in section Tacamahaca. By conducting whole-genome re-sequencing of 150 genotypes from these 31 species, 2.28 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified. Phylogenetic analysis utilizing these SNPs not only revealed a highly intricate evolutionary network within the large-leaf species of section Tacamahaca but also confirmed that a new species, P. curviserrata, naturally hybridized with P. cathayana, P. szechuanica, and P. ciliata, resulting in 11 hybrid species. These findings indicate the widespread occurrence of hybrid species formation within this genus, with hybridization serving as a key evolutionary mechanism for Populus on the plateau. A novel hypothesis, "Hybrid Species Exterminating Their Ancestral Species (HSEAS)," is introduced to explain the mechanisms of hybrid species formation at three different scales: the entire plateau, the southeastern mountain region, and individual river valleys.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the therapeutic efficacy of scalp acupuncture combined with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) for post-stroke cognitive impairment at different time intervals. METHOD: This retrospective cohort study divided patients into two groups according to the timing of the scalp acupuncture combined with rTMS intervention. Group A received scalp acupuncture combined with rTMS at 1 month post-stroke and routine basic treatment and cognitive function training at two months post-stroke. Group B received routine basic treatment and cognitive function training at 1 month post-stroke and scalp acupuncture combined with rTMS at 2 months post-stroke. Both groups underwent cognitive assessment using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) before treatment and at the ends of the first and second months post-stroke. RESULTS: The study population included 92 total stroke patients divided evenly into Groups A and B. Group A's total scores were higher at the end of the first month of treatment compared with baseline and remained stable at the end of the second month of treatment. By contrast, Group B's total score remained stable at the end of the first month of treatment compared with baseline and increased by the end of the second month. There were no significant differences in the scores at baseline or the end of the second month between the two groups. CONCLUSION: Scalp acupuncture combined with rTMS can effectively treat cognitive function in patients with post-stroke cognitive impairment, regardless of the timing of the intervention.

ABSTRACT

Background and purpose: Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) have been identified as potential prognostic markers in various conditions, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and stroke. This study aims to investigate the dynamic changes of NLR and MLR following cerebral contusion and their associations with six-month outcomes. Methods: Retrospective data were collected from January 2016 to April 2020, including patients diagnosed with cerebral contusion and discharged from two teaching-oriented tertiary hospitals in Southern China. Patient demographics, clinical manifestations, laboratory test results (neutrophil, monocyte, and lymphocyte counts) obtained at admission, 24 hours, and one week after cerebral contusion, as well as outcomes, were analyzed. An unfavorable outcome was defined as a Glasgow Outcome Score (GOS) of 0-3 at six months. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify independent predictors of prognosis, while receiver characteristic curve analysis was used to determine the optimal cutoff values for NLR and MLR. Results: A total of 552 patients (mean age 47.40, SD 17.09) were included, with 73.19% being male. Higher NLR at one-week post-cerebral contusion (adjusted OR = 4.19, 95%CI, 1.16 - 15.16, P = 0.029) and higher MLR at admission and at 24 h (5.80, 1.40 - 24.02, P = 0.015; 9.06, 1.45 - 56.54, P = 0.018, respectively) were significantly associated with a 6-month unfavorable prognosis after adjustment for other risk factors by multiple logistic regression. The NLR at admission and 24 hours, as well as the MLR at one week, were not significant predictors for a 6-month unfavorable prognosis. Based on receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, the optimal thresholds of NLR at 1 week and MLR at admission after cerebral contusion that best discriminated a unfavorable outcome at 6-month were 6.39 (81.60% sensitivity and 70.73% specificity) and 0.76 (55.47% sensitivity and 78.26% specificity), respectively. Conclusion: NLR measured one week after cerebral contusion and MLR measured at admission may serve as predictive markers for a 6-month unfavorable prognosis. These ratios hold potential as parameters for risk stratification in patients with cerebral contusion, complementing established biomarkers in diagnosis and treatment. However, further prospective studies with larger cohorts are needed to validate these findings.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effect of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) on the frontal ankle motor control in individuals with chronic ankle instability (CAI) during drop-landing. DESIGN: This was a randomized, controlled, double-blind trial. Thirty-six individuals with CAI were randomly assigned to each group. Participants received 6-week NMES intervention and sham stimulation in the NMES and control groups, respectively. Data was collected at week0 and week6. A mixed-effects model and analysis of covariance were employed to investigate the between-group differences in continuous and discrete outcome variables at week6, with the outcome variables at week0 as covariates. RESULTS: Compared to control group, NMES group exhibited a 2.66° (2.45, 2.86) reduction in frontal ankle inversion angle, a 47.41°/s (-16.05, -78.77) decrease in peak ankle inversion angular velocity, and a 0.43 Nm/kg (0.18, 0.68) increase in peak ankle eversion moment during drop-landing at week6. CONCLUSION: Applying 6-week NMES to the fibularis longus resulted in decreased ankle inversion angle and ankle inversion angular velocity, and increased peak ankle eversion moment during drop-landing. Consequently, NMES could be considered an effective modality for individuals with CAI to enhance the frontal ankle movement patterns and overall ankle motor control.
