ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To validate the effects of subject position on single energy metal artifact reduction (SEMAR) of a reverse shoulder prosthesis using computed tomography (CT). METHODS: A water phantom with a reverse shoulder prosthesis was scanned at four positions on the XY plane of the CT gantry (on-center, 50 mm, 100 mm, and 150 mm from on-center in the negative direction of the X axis, respectively). We obtained images with and without SEMAR. The artifact index (AI) was measured via physical assessment. Scheffé's (Ura) paired comparison methods were performed with the amount of metal artifact by ten radiological technologists via visual assessment. RESULTS: The AI was significantly reduced when using SEMAR. As the phantom moved away from the on-center position, the AI increased, and metal artifacts increased in Scheffé's methods. CONCLUSION: SEMAR reduces metal artifacts of a reverse shoulder prosthesis, but metal artifacts may increase as the subject position moves away from the on-center position.

ABSTRACT

Caulerpa lentillifera is a kind of edible seaweed, known as 'sea grape' or 'green caviar'. It is used in fresh salads. However, it is sensitive to low temperature and osmotic pressure, and is easily spoilt by storage in a refrigerator or washing with tap water. That is the reason why it is difficult to prevent food poisoning, especially due to Vibrio parahaemolyticus. In this study we investigated of marine bacteria and V. parahaemolyticus in C. lentillifera and cultured them in order to develop effective control of bacteria in commercial farms. The sixteen farms in the Okinawa Islands were investigated from August to September in 2006. A total of 176 samples were collected from eleven points during the cultivation processes and from the products. About 10(3) cfu/mL of marine bacteria were detected in the seawater used in the tank culture, but after cultivation of C. lentillifera the number had increased to about 10(6) cfu/mL. The number of marine bacteria in C. lentillifera did not change significantly through the process of planting to the final product (about 10(7) cfu/g). V. parahaemolyticus was detected in seawater from all processes and C. lentillifera was isolated from 56% of seawater, 25% of seed-stocks, and 18.8% of product samples, though but thermostable direct hemolysin gene was not detected from enrichment cultures or isolated V. parahaemolyticus strains. These results indicate that for prevention of food poisoning by V. parahaemolyticus in C. lentillifera, it is important to establish a suitable sterilization procedure for each process.

ABSTRACT

We treated 12 patients with rheumatoid arthritis by filtration leukocytapheresis (FLCP) and evaluated its effect on leukocyte enzyme activities. We calculated the number of leukocytes removed and assessed the clinical response. We also evaluated the cellular enzyme activities of elastase and dipeptidylpeptidase IV (DPP IV). Out of 12 patients, 7 patients achieved 20% improvement for 4 weeks following FLCP. The FLCP treatment resulted in removal of 96% of granulocytes, 98% of monocytes, and 61% of lymphocytes. Granulocytes and monocytes with high elastase activity were effectively removed by FLCP. The elastase activity of granulocytes was increased 4 weeks after the last FLCP only in responders. On the other hand, the DPP IV activity of lymphocytes was low at 4 weeks after the last FLCP in responders. Modulation of leukocyte enzyme activities is one of the main effects of FLCP therapy and alteration of granulocytes, monocytes, and lymphocytes.
