ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Cancer registries offer an avenue to identify cancer clusters across large populations and efficiently examine potential environmental harms affecting cancer. The role of known metal carcinogens (i.e., cadmium, arsenic, nickel, chromium(VI)) in breast and colorectal carcinogenesis is largely unknown. Historically marginalized communities are disproportionately exposed to metals, which could explain cancer disparities. We examined area-based metal exposures and odds of residing in breast and colorectal cancer hotspots utilizing state tumor registry data and described the characteristics of those living in heavy metal-associated cancer hotspots. METHODS: Breast and colorectal cancer hotspots were mapped across Kentucky, and area-based ambient metal exposure to cadmium, arsenic, nickel, and chromium(VI) were extracted from the 2014 National Air Toxics Assessment for Kentucky census tracts. Among colorectal cancer (n = 56,598) and female breast cancer (n = 77,637) diagnoses in Kentucky, we used logistic regression models to estimate Odds Ratios (ORs) and 95% Confidence Intervals to examine the association between ambient metal concentrations and odds of residing in cancer hotspots, independent of individual-level and neighborhood risk factors. RESULTS: Higher ambient metal exposures were associated with higher odds of residing in breast and colorectal cancer hotspots. Populations in breast and colorectal cancer hotspots were disproportionately Black and had markers of lower socioeconomic status. Furthermore, adjusting for age, race, tobacco and neighborhood factors did not significantly change cancer hotspot ORs for ambient metal exposures analyzed. CONCLUSION: Ambient metal exposures contribute to higher cancer rates in certain geographic areas that are largely composed of marginalized populations. Individual-level assessments of metal exposures and cancer disparities are needed.

ABSTRACT

A systematic literature review was conducted to examine all recent academic, peer-reviewed studies of menstrual hygiene management (MHM) across adolescent girls in Anglophone West Africa. The objective was to assess the status of the scholarship surrounding the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of MHM across English-speaking West African countries and identify gaps in the literature for further research. The authors searched the epidemiological literatures indexed in PubMed and cross-referenced bibliographies for studies published between 2010-2022. Of 59 abstracts and articles screened, 35 met the final inclusion criteria. Despite differences in study design, setting, and data sources, the study results concurred on an average age of menarche between 12-15 years old among adolescent girls. The knowledge of MHM came from multiple sources, most commonly mothers, female siblings, and teachers and higher knowledge was associated with age, source, wealth, religion, and education level. Less than half of the adolescent girls knew about menstruation before menarche. Many studies showed that girls were shocked by their first period and fearful of staining. Menstruation was associated with dysmenorrhea, fear/embarrassment, and missing school. The existing studies suggest that more implementation and evaluation of menstrual hygiene management materials, education, and facilities are needed to address the educational, physical, and social disparities that exist among girls in West African countries.


Une revue systématique de la littérature a été menée pour examiner toutes les études universitaires récentes évaluées par des pairs sur la gestion de l'hygiène menstruelle (MHM) chez les adolescentes d'Afrique de l'Ouest anglophone. L'objectif était d'évaluer l'état de la recherche sur les connaissances, les attitudes et les pratiques de la GHM dans les pays anglophones d'Afrique de l'Ouest et d'identifier les lacunes dans la littérature pour des recherches plus approfondies. Les auteurs ont recherché dans la littérature épidémiologique indexée dans PubMed et des bibliographies croisées pour les études publiées entre 2010 et 2022. Sur les 59 résumés et articles examinés, 35 répondaient aux critères d'inclusion finaux. Malgré les différences dans la conception, le cadre et les sources de données de l'étude, les résultats de l'étude concordaient sur un âge moyen des premières règles entre 12 et 15 ans chez les adolescentes. La connaissance de la GHM provenait de sources multiples, le plus souvent des mères, des frères et sœurs et des enseignants, et les connaissances supérieures étaient associées à l'âge, à la source, à la richesse, à la religion et au niveau d'éducation. Moins de la moitié des adolescentes connaissaient leurs règles avant les premières règles. De nombreuses études ont montré que les filles étaient choquées par leurs premières règles et craignaient les taches. Les menstruations étaient associées à la dysménorrhée, à la peur/à la gêne et à l'absence à l'école. Les études existantes suggèrent qu'une plus grande mise en œuvre et une plus grande évaluation du matériel, de l'éducation et des installations de gestion de l'hygiène menstruelle sont nécessaires pour remédier aux disparités éducatives, physiques et sociales qui existent parmi les filles dans les pays d'Afrique de l'Ouest.

ABSTRACT

The photoreceptor outer segment (OS) is the phototransductive organelle in the vertebrate retina. OS tips are regularly ingested and degraded by the adjacent retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), offsetting the addition of new disk membrane at the base of the OS. This catabolic role of the RPE is essential for photoreceptor health, with defects in ingestion or degradation underlying different forms of retinal degeneration and blindness. Although proteins required for OS tip ingestion have been identified, spatiotemporal analysis of the ingestion process in live RPE cells is lacking; hence, the literature reflects no common understanding of the cellular mechanisms that affect ingestion. We imaged live RPE cells from mice (both sexes) to elucidate the ingestion events in real time. Our imaging revealed roles for f-actin dynamics and specific dynamic localizations of two BAR (Bin-Amphiphysin-Rvs) proteins, FBP17 and AMPH1-BAR, in shaping the RPE apical membrane as it surrounds the OS tip. Completion of ingestion was observed to occur by scission of the OS tip from the remainder of the OS, with a transient concentration of f-actin forming around the site of imminent scission. Actin dynamics were also required for regulating the size of the ingested OS tip, and the time course of the overall ingestion process. The size of the ingested tip is consistent with the term "phagocytosis." However, phagocytosis usually refers to engulfment of an entire particle or cell, whereas our observations of OS tip scission indicate a process that is more specifically described as "trogocytosis," in which one cell "nibbles" another cell.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT The ingestion of the photoreceptor outer segment (OS) tips by the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is a dynamic cellular process that has fascinated scientists for 60 years. Yet its molecular mechanisms had not been addressed in living cells. We developed a live-cell imaging approach to investigate OS tip ingestion, and focused on the dynamic participation of actin filaments and membrane-shaping BAR proteins. We observed scission of OS tips for the first time, and were able to monitor local changes in protein concentration preceding, during, and following scission. Our approach revealed that actin filaments were concentrated at the site of OS scission and were required for regulating the size of the ingested OS tip and the time course of the ingestion process.

INTRODUCTION: Given the growing awareness of the health risks associated with e-cigarettes, many users will access information about how to effectively quit using e-cigarettes, and the internet likely will be a popular source of information. However, little is known about the readability of online e-cigarette cessation information. Therefore, the goal of the current study was to assess the readability of webpage information about e-cigarette cessation. METHODS: A search of webpages was conducted using the following search terms: vaping addiction, quit vaping, quit Juul, stop vaping, stop Juul, and vaping cessation. The 464 webpages identified were coded for target audience, message valence, and source, and then assessed for reading level with the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level assessment. RESULTS: On average, webpage content was written at a 7th grade reading level (Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level Mean=7.34, SD=2.22) and less than 25% of webpages met readability guidelines (i.e. ≤6th grade reading level). There were no differences in readability by target audience, message valence, or webpage source. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that most online content related to e-cigarette cessation is not written at a level that is easily understood by general audiences. Thus, tobacco control advocates should assess the reading level of their messaging to ensure wide accessibility of information.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep deficiency is associated with health risks, and time outdoors is related to health benefits. This study assessed time outdoors and its association with sleep normality. METHODS: As part of a health study in Louisville, Kentucky, 735 participants completed questionnaires on their health status, behaviors, neighborhoods, and demographics in 2018-2019. The measures included information on sleep, time outdoors, and mental and physical health. Participant characteristics were assessed by dichotomized sleep normality (N=728), and logistic regression (N=709) examined potential associations between time outdoors and sleep. RESULTS: As time spent outdoors increased from ≤4 hours to >4 - ≤8 hours (OR=1.04; 95% CI: 0.65-1.64) and >8 - ≤12 hours (OR=1.17; 95% CI: 0.63-2.17), odds of normal sleep increased; however, those who spent >12 - ≤16 hours (OR=0.63; 95% CI: 0.31-1.27) or >16 hours (OR=0.83; 95% CI: 0.45-1.53) outdoors had a lower likelihood of normal sleep. No associations between time outdoors and sleep were significant. There was a significant trend of less bodily pain associated with normal sleep (p<0.001) and in the association of depression and sleep, where odds of normal sleep decreased as depression severity increased (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Consistent with extant literature, findings indicate associations between less pain and increased odds of normal sleep and between higher severity of depression and lower odds of normal sleep. Findings for an overall association between time outdoors and sleep normality were not significant. Future work should seek to better explicate the predictor variables to assess how greenness and activity type shape associations with sleep.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to green spaces is beneficial to mental health in a variety of ways, ranging from stress reduction to increased attentiveness and elevated self-esteem. The impact of views of greenness, as opposed to direct exposure, has been examined, but the association between self-reported views and depressive symptoms is not known. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between views of greenness and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) score. METHODS: Questionnaire responses from 191 participants in the Health, Environment, and Action in Louisville (HEAL) study were examined. Univariate statistical analyses included Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis, and Spearman rank tests. Inferential statistical analysis was linear regression. RESULTS: Participant satisfaction with residential greenness was significantly associated with reduced PHQ-9 score (partially adjusted: linear coefficient = -0.42; 95% CI: -0.70 - -0.14; fully adjusted: linear coefficient = -0.21; 95% CI: -0.44 - 0.02). Additionally, being satisfied with local greenness was significantly associated with having views of greenness from home (linear coefficient = 1.97; 95% CI: 1.23-2.68). CONCLUSIONS: Though views of greenness were not directly associated with depression, satisfaction with local greenness was associated with reduced PHQ-9 score, and having views of greenness from home was crudely associated with increased greenness satisfaction. The findings suggest urban greening interventions that focus on greenness satisfaction may be a strategy to reduce depression. Further research is necessary to better understand these relationships.
