ABSTRACT

Several neuropeptides present in bone tissues, produced by nerve fibers and bone cells, have been reported to play a role in regulating the fine-tuning of osteoblast and osteoclast functions to maintain bone homeostasis. This study aims to characterize the influence of the neuropeptide vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) on the differentiation process of human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into osteoblasts and on their anabolic function. We describe the mRNA and protein expression profile of VIP and its receptors in MSCs as they differentiate into osteoblasts, suggesting the presence of an autocrine signaling pathway in these cells. Our findings reveal that VIP enhances the expression of early osteoblast markers in MSCs under osteogenic differentiation and favors both bone matrix formation and proper cytoskeletal reorganization. Finally, our data suggest that VIP could be exerting a direct modulatory role on the osteoblast to osteoclast signaling by downregulating the receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand/osteoprotegerin ratio. These results highlight the potential of VIP as an osteoinductive differentiation factor, emerging as a key molecule in the maintenance of human bone homeostasis.

ABSTRACT

The increased risk of fractures in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is nowadays well recognized. However, the exact mechanism of action of diabetic bone disease has not been fully elucidated. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are gene regulators that operate post-transcriptionally and have been implicated in the development of various metabolic disorders including T1DM. Previous studies have implicated a role for miR-144-5p and miR-21-5p, which are involved in controlling oxidative stress by targeting Nrf2, in T1DM. To date, it is unclear whether miR-144-5p and miR-21-5p affect bone health in T1DM. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the influence of miR-144-5p and miR-21-5p knockdown in the development of bone disease in T1DM male mice. Therefore, T1DM was induced in 10-wk-old male mice using streptozotocin (STZ). One week later, after development of hyperglycemia, antagomir-144-5p and antagomir-21-5p or their non-targeting control were administered at 10 mg/kg BW once a week until the end of the experiment. At 14 wk of age, glucose levels, bone, and fat mass were analyzed. The results revealed that treating T1DM male mice with antagomir-144-5p and antagomir-21-5p did not protect against diabetes development or bone loss, despite the successful downregulation of the miRNAs and the normalization of Nrf2 mRNA levels in bone tissue. Histological and serological parameters of bone formation or resorption were not altered by the antagomir treatment. Finally, we measured the expression of miRNA-144-5p or miRNA-21-5p in the serum of 30 individuals with T1DM and compared them to non-diabetic controls, but did not find an altered expression of either miRNA. In conclusion, the knockdown of miR-144-5p and miR-21-5p does not affect STZ-induced diabetes development or loss of bone mass in male mice. However, it does normalize expression of the anti-oxidant factor Nrf2 in diabetic bone tissue.

Introduction Ozone (O3) is one of the most prevalent atmospheric pollutants, arising from a photochemical reaction between volatile organic compounds (VOC), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and sunlight. O3 triggers oxidative stress, resulting in lipid oxidation, inflammation, alterations in metabolic and cellular signaling, and potentially initiating cell death in vulnerable brain regions. Inflammation and oxidative stress are recognized for their ability to induce cell death, primarily through the apoptosis pathway, involving various proteins that participate in this process via two pathways: intrinsic and extrinsic. Objective This study aims to identify the expression of pro-apoptotic proteins and Bcl-2 in the frontal cortex, cerebellum, and hippocampus of rats exposed to O3 acutely. Methods Two groups of 20 Wistar rodents (250-300 g) were established. The control group (n=10) was exposed to unrestricted polluted air for 12 hours, while the experimental group (n=10) was exposed to 1 ppm of O3. After exposure, the animals were sacrificed for immunofluorescence and Western blot analysis. Using a t-test, the arbitrary units of pro-apoptotic proteins and Bcl-2 were compared between the two groups. Results Significant increases in caspase-8 and caspase-3 activation were found in the O3-exposed group compared to the control group, specifically in the frontal cortex, cerebellum, and hippocampus. Additionally, notable changes in Bcl-2 expression were observed in these brain regions. The TUNEL (terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling) assay further indicated significant differences in immunopositivity between the groups in the same areas. However, intrinsic apoptotic proteins such as Bax, VDAC1, and cytochrome-c did not show significant differences between the groups within these structures. Western blot analyses aligned with the immunofluorescence results, showing statistically significant concentrations of caspase-8 in the cerebellum, caspase-3 in the hippocampus, and Bcl-2 in the frontal cortex in the O3 exposed group. Conversely, proteins like Bax, cytochrome-c, and VDAC1 did not exhibit significant differences in all analyzed structures. Conclusions This study demonstrates that acute exposure to 1 ppm of ozone can trigger neuronal apoptosis in the frontal cortex, hippocampus, and cerebellum of rats, primarily through the activation of the extrinsic apoptosis pathway via caspase-8 and caspase-3. Additionally, it causes a reduction in Bcl-2 expression, an essential antiapoptotic protein. Despite not observing the activation of intrinsic pathway proteins like BAX, VDAC, or cytochrome-c, the study suggests that chronic O3 exposure might promote cell death by activating this pathway, requiring further long-term research.

Flood exposure has been linked to shifts in population sizes and composition. Traditionally, these changes have been observed at a local level providing insight to local dynamics but not general trends, or at a coarse resolution that does not capture localized shifts. Using historic flood data between 2000-2023 across the Contiguous United States (CONUS), we identify the relationships between flood exposure and population change. We demonstrate that observed declines in population are statistically associated with higher levels of historic flood exposure, which may be subsequently coupled with future population projections. Several locations have already begun to see population responses to observed flood exposure and are forecasted to have decreased future growth rates as a result. Finally, we find that exposure to high frequency flooding (5 and 20-year return periods) results in 2-7% lower growth rates than baseline projections. This is exacerbated in areas with relatively high exposure to frequent flooding where growth is expected to decline over the next 30 years.

Epilepsy stands as a prominent neurological disorder, affecting a substantial number of individuals who, unfortunately, do not respond to conventional antiepileptic medications. To unravel the intricate mechanisms underlying epileptic seizures and explore potential therapeutic avenues, researchers have turned to animal models. Among these models, rats have emerged as one of the cornerstones of epilepsy research. This bibliometric analysis embarks on the crucial task of delving into the role of rat models in deciphering the mysteries of epileptic seizures and, notably, pinpointing the most prevalent models in use. Our study harnessed Scopus' citation tracking feature to review a range of research papers dating from 1969 to 2020, all dedicated to the exploration of epileptic seizures in rats. The citations that emerged from this rigorous process were subjected to thematic coding, primarily centered around the specific epileptic animal models employed, and subsequently, comprehensive descriptive statistics were computed. In this effort, we found a total of 1,318 publications that explore the world of rat studies, accumulating a substantial citation count of 44,824 references. This analysis illuminated the invaluable role that research employing rat models has played in shaping our current clinical understanding of epileptic seizures. Notably, several models have emerged as predominant forces in this field, including those induced by pilocarpine, pentylenetetrazole (PTZ), kainic acid (KA), electric kindling, and electroshock. This bibliometric exploration serves as a resounding reminder of the pivotal position that rat models occupy in advancing our comprehension of epilepsy. These findings resonate strongly, underscoring the continued importance of directing research and development funding toward this debilitating disorder, with the ultimate aim of maximizing the benefits for the patients grappling with this condition. The potential to revolutionize our approach to epilepsy and enhance the quality of life for those affected remains a beacon of hope, illuminated by the contributions of these tireless researchers and their trusty rat companions.

Few studies have reported long-term follow-up data on selective preventive interventions for adolescents. No follow-up selective preventive transdiagnostic studies for adolescents at-risk for emotional disorders, such as anxiety and depression, have been reported. To fill this gap, this study aims to provide the first follow-up assessment of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) studying selective transdiagnostic prevention in at-risk adolescents. A 12-month follow-up assessment was conducted with subjects who originally received either PROCARE (Preventive transdiagnostic intervention for Adolescents at Risk for Emotional disorders), PROCARE+, which includes the PROCARE protocol along with personalized add-on modules or an active control condition (ACC) based on emotional psychoeducation, and their respective booster session for each experimental condition. 80 subjects (47.5% girls) aged between 12 and 18 years (M = 14.62; SD 1.43) who completed these treatment conditions were available for the 12-month follow-up. The results demonstrate the superior long-term efficacy of the PROCARE+ intervention in mitigating emotional symptoms and obsessive-compulsive symptomatology compared to the PROCARE and ACC conditions, with effect sizes notably exceeding those commonly observed in preventive programs. While the three treatments demonstrated beneficial impacts, the pronounced results associated with PROCARE+ at the 12-month follow-up emphasized the importance of personalized treatment modules and the sustained benefits of booster sessions in the realm of preventive psychological interventions. The findings also highlight the potential role of add-on modules in enhancing the effects of the PROCARE+ condition.

The Enteric Nervous System (ENS) is described as a division of the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS), located within the gut wall and it is formed by two main plexuses: the myenteric plexus (Auerbach's) and the submucosal plexus (Meissner's). The contribution of the ENS to the pathophysiology of various neurological diseases such as Parkinson's or Alzheimer's disease has been described in the literature, while some other studies have found a connection between epilepsy and the gastrointestinal tract. The above could be explained by cholinergic neurons and neurotransmission systems in the myenteric and submucosal plexuses, regulating the vagal excitability effect. It is also understandable, as the discharges arising in the amygdala are transmitted to the intestine through projections the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus, giving rise to efferent fibers that stimulate the gastrointestinal tract and consequently the symptoms at this level. Therefore, this review's main objective is to argue in favor of the existing relationship of the ENS with the Central Nervous System (CNS) as a facilitator of epileptogenic or ictogenic mechanisms. The gut microbiota also participates in this interaction; however, it depends on many individual factors of each human being. The link between the ENS and the CNS is a poorly studied epileptogenic site with a big impact on one of the most prevalent neurological conditions such as epilepsy.

ABSTRACT

Background Endovascular intervention of femoropopliteal chronic total occlusions (CTOs) is technically more complex. However, there is lack of comparative analysis between CTO and non-CTO femoropopliteal interventions. Methods and Results We report procedural details and outcomes of patients treated for femoropopliteal CTO and non-CTO lesions in the XLPAD (Excellence in Peripheral Artery Disease) registry (NCT01904851) between 2006 and 2019. Primary outcomes were procedural success and 1-year major adverse limb events, a composite of all-cause death, target limb revascularization, or major amputation. Analysis included 2895 patients (CTO: n=1516 patients; non-CTO: n=1379 patients) with 3658 lesions (CTO: n=1998 lesions; non-CTO: n=1660 lesions). Conventional balloon angioplasty (20.86% versus 33.48%, P<0.001) or drug-coated balloon angioplasty (1.26% versus 2.93%, P<0.001) were more frequent in the non-CTO group, whereas bare-metal stents (28.09% versus 20.22%, P<0.001) or covered stents (4.08% versus 1.83%, P<0.001) were more frequent in the CTO group. Debulking procedures were more commonly performed in the non-CTO group (41.44% versus 53.13%, P<0.001), despite a similar degree of calcification between the 2 groups. Procedural success was higher in the non-CTO group (90.12% versus 96.79%, P<0.001). Procedural complications were higher in the CTO group (7.21% versus 4.66%, P=0.002), mainly due to excess distal embolization (1.5% versus 0.6%, P=0.015). Adjusted 1-year major adverse limb events were higher in the CTO group (22.47% versus 18.77%, P=0.019), driven mainly by target limb revascularization (19.00% versus 15.34%, P=0.013). Conclusions Procedural success is lower for endovascular treatment of femoropopliteal CTO compared with non-CTO lesions. CTO lesions are associated with higher rates of periprocedural complications and reinterventions after 1 year.

ABSTRACT

Significant evidence does exist on the effectiveness of transdiagnostic interventions to improve emotional problems in clinical populations, and their application as universal and indicated prevention programs. However, no randomized controlled trials (RCT) studying selective transdiagnostic prevention intervention have been published. This is the first known RCT to evaluate the efficacy/effectiveness of an evidence-based selective prevention transdiagnostic program for emotional problems in adolescents. The impact of three different interventions was evaluated: (1) PROCARE (Preventive transdiagnostic intervention for Adolescents at Risk for Emotional disorders), which is a group-based, abbreviated version of the Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders in Adolescents (UP-A), along with adding a booster session to reduce risk of onset of anxiety and depression, (2) PROCARE + , which includes the PROCARE protocol along with personalized add-on modules tailored to match adolescents' risk factors, and (3) an active control condition (ACC) based on emotional psychoeducation. In total, 208 adolescents (48.5% girls) evidencing high risk and low protective factors were randomized and allocated to PROCARE, PROCARE + or ACC. Data from 153 adolescents who completed all assessments in the different phases of the study were analyzed. Self- and parent-reported measures were taken at baseline, as well as after the intervention, a 6 month follow-up was carried out, together with a 1 month follow-up after the booster session. Differences between conditions were significant on most of the outcome measures, with superior effect sizes for PROCARE + in the short and long term. Interventions were acceptable in terms of acceptability, with good satisfaction rates. Tailored targeted selective transdiagnostic interventions focused on mitigating risk factors and promoting protective factors in vulnerable adolescents are promising.

Despite increased use of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) during peripheral artery interventions, evidence for reproducibility of IVUS measurements and its relation to angiography is lacking. Forty cross-sectional IVUS images of the femoropopliteal artery from 20 randomly selected patients enrolled in the XLPAD (Excellence in Peripheral Artery Disease) registry who underwent peripheral artery interventions and met criteria based on IVUS consensus guidelines were independently assessed by 2 blinded readers. IVUS images from 6 patients (40 images) were selected for angiographic correlation and met criteria for identifiable landmarks (e.g., stent edge and bifurcation). Lumen cross-sectional area (CSA), external elastic membrane (EEM) CSA, luminal diameter, and reference vessel diameter were repeatedly measured. The Lumen CSA and EEM CSA intra-observer agreement by Spearman rank-order correlation (ρ) was >0.993, intraclass correlation coefficient was >0.997, and repeatability coefficient was <1.34. For the interobserver measurement of luminal CSA and EEM CSA, the ρ = 0.742 and 0.764; intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.888 and 0.885; and repeatability coefficient = 7.24 and 11.34, respectively. A Bland-Altman plot for lumen and EEM CSA showed good reproducibility. For angiographic comparison, the ρ for luminal diameter, luminal area, and vessel area were 0.419, 0.414, and 0.649, respectively. Femoropopliteal IVUS measurements showed strong intra-observer and interobserver agreement; IVUS and angiographic measurements did not demonstrate a similar strong agreement.

Introducción: Los arrecifes de coral son ecosistemas altamente degradados, por lo que ha sido necesario implementar acciones de restauración activa para recuperar su estructura y funcionamiento. Se ha implementado la propagación clonal para obtener fragmentos pequeños (~ 10 cm) de las ramas distales de colonias donadoras de corales de la especie Acropora palmata, para posteriormente fijarlos en el sustrato arrecifal, simulando el efecto de dispersión que ocurre de manera natural en esta especie, a lo que en este trabajo se denomina ''dispersión asistida". Sin embargo, es necesario evaluar los efectos de esta técnica como son: la cantidad de fragmentos que se puede obtener de cada colonia, el periodo de recuperación de tejido de las colonias donadoras y los fragmentos sembrados. Objetivo: Evaluar el efecto de poda en las colonias donadoras estimando el porcentaje de tejido podado de colonias donadoras de A. palmata y su tasa de recuperación 30 meses después. Métodos: Se realizaron cuatro monitoreos: antes, inmediatamente después de la poda, un mes después de la siembra, y 30 meses después, en cuatro colonias de A. palmata localizadas en el Parque Nacional Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún y Punta Nizuc en el Caribe mexicano. La modelación 3D basada en fotogrametría se realizó con el software Agisoft Metashape Pro, mientras que las métricas de área de superficie de tejido, extensión radial y apical se obtuvieron mediante el software CloudCompare. Resultados: Posterior a la colecta de fragmentos de las colonias, se observó que el material utilizado en la dispersión asistida representa menos del 12% del tejido vivo. Después de un mes, las colonias donadoras presentaban una recuperación del 5% con tejido nuevo recubriendo las áreas de corte. Las colonias donadoras perdieron, en promedio, 65% de tejido vivo tras el impacto de cuatro huracanes, y en un caso la colonia fue totalmente eliminada, pero con los fragmentos sembrados se pudo conservar el genotipo. Conclusiones: La dispersión asistida podría incrementar el tejido vivo de corales ramificados en intervalos de tiempo relativamente cortos, sin comprometer la integridad de la colonia donadora, si se poda menos del 12%.


Introduction: Coral reefs are highly degraded ecosystems, for which it has been necessary to implement active restoration actions to recover their structure and functioning. Asexual propagation has been implemented to obtain small fragments (~10 cm) from the distal branches of donor colonies of corals of the species Acropora palmata, to subsequently relocate them in the reef substrate, simulating the dispersion effect that occurs naturally in the species, which in this work is called assisted propagation. However, it is necessary to evaluate the effects of this technique, such as the number of fragments that can be obtained from each colony, the tissue recovery period of the donor colonies and fragments. Objective: To address the effect of pruning on donor colonies by estimating the percentage of live tissue removed from donor colonies of A. palmata and their recovery rate after 30-months. Methods: Four surveys were carried out: before, immediately after pruning, one month after outplanting, and 30 months after pruning on four colonies of A. palmata located in the Parque Nacional Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún and Punta Nizuc in the Mexican Caribbean. Photogrammetry-based 3D modeling was performed using Agisoft Metashape Pro software, while tissue surface area, radial and apical growth were obtained using CloudCompare software. Results: After fragment collection, the material used in the assisted propagation represents less than 12% of the living tissue. After one month, the donor colonies showed a recovery of 5%, with new tissue covering the cut areas. The donor colonies lost on average 65 % of living tissue after four hurricanes, and in one case the colony was lost all together, but with the outplanted fragments the genotype could be preserved. Conclusions: Assisted propagation could increase living tissue of branching corals in relatively short intervals of time, without serious damage to the donor colony if less than 12 % is removed.

Differences between conditions were significant on most of the outcome measures, with superior effect sizes for PROCARE +. Interventions were excellent in terms of acceptability, with good satisfaction rates. Tailored selective transdiagnostic interventions focused on mitigating risk factors and promoting protective factors in vulnerable adolescents are promising.

CONTEXT: MicroRNAs (miRNAs)-short, single-stranded, noncoding RNAs-regulate several biological processes, including bone metabolism. OBJECTIVE: We investigated circulating miRNAs as promising biomarkers for treatment monitoring in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis on denosumab (DMAB) therapy. METHODS: In this prospective, observational, single-center study, 21 postmenopausal women treated with DMAB were included for a longitudinal follow-up of 2 years. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) was performed to screen for serological miRNAs at baseline, month 6, and month 24. Reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was used to confirm NGS findings in the entire cohort. Bone turnover markers (BTM) P1NP and CTX, and bone mineral density (BMD) by dual x-ray absorptiometry were assessed and correlated to miRNAs. RESULTS: BMD at the hip (5.5%, P = 0.0006) and lumbar spine significantly increased (11.4%, P = 0.017), and CTX (64.1%, P < 0.0001) and P1NP (69.3%, P < 0.0001) significantly decreased during treatment. NGS analysis revealed significant changes in miRNAs after 2 years of DMAB treatment but not after 6 months. Seven miRNAs were confirmed by RT-qPCR to be significantly changed during a 2-year course of DMAB treatment compared to baseline. Four of these were mainly transcribed in blood cells, including monocytes. Correlation analysis identified significant correlation between change in miRNA and change in BTMs as well as BMD. Based on effect size and correlation strength, miR-454-3p, miR-26b-5p, and miR-584-5p were defined as top biomarker candidates, with the strongest association to the sustained effect of denosumab on bone in osteoporotic patients. CONCLUSION: Two years of DMAB treatment resulted in upregulation of 7 miRNAs, 4 of which are mainly transcribed in monocytes, indicating a potential impact of DMAB on circulating osteoclast precursor cells. These changes were associated to BMD gain and BTM suppression and could therefore be useful for monitoring DMAB treatment response.

ABSTRACT

Labeling data is often expensive and time-consuming, especially for tasks such as object detection and instance segmentation, which require dense labeling of the image. While few-shot object detection is about training a model on novel (unseen) object classes with little data, it still requires prior training on many labeled examples of base (seen) classes. On the other hand, self-supervised methods aim at learning representations from unlabeled data which transfer well to downstream tasks such as object detection. Combining few-shot and self-supervised object detection is a promising research direction. In this survey, we review and characterize the most recent approaches on few-shot and self-supervised object detection. Then, we give our main takeaways and discuss future research directions. Resumen ANTECEDENTES: Los tumores anexiales durante el embarazo requieren una conducta terapéutica segura para la madre y el feto, por lo que el obstetra debe tener claro cuándo la opción quirúrgica es la indicada y cuál la menos agresiva para la madre y el feto. Describir la implementación de la laparoscopia con minilaparotomía en un caso de tumor anexial en el embarazo puede contribuir a conocer las ventajas y desventajas de la estrategia quirúrgica de estos casos. CASO CLÍNICO: Paciente de 29 años, 70 kg de peso, talla de 1.61 m e IMC 27 en curso de las 16 semanas de embarazo, que acudió al servicio de Urgencias debido a un dolor abdominal. Ante la persistencia del síntoma se estableció el diagnóstico de síndrome doloroso abdominal, secundario a un tumor anexial gigante. Se programó para una laparoscopia diagnóstica y operatoria con minilaparotomía. Se dio de alta del hospital a las 24 horas posteriores a la cirugía y el embarazo finalizó a las 39 semanas. METODOLOGÍA: Búsqueda retrospectiva de artículos publicados durante los últimos diez años e indizados en la base de PubMed con los MeSH: adnexal masses pregnancy, adnexal masses pregnancy and laparoscopic surgery. RESULTADOS: Se incluyeron 34 artículos de revisión, 8 reportes de caso y un editorial, estos últimos 9 se consideraron cuando proveyeron información relevante para el conocimiento de una técnica quirúrgica. Se eliminaron los artículos en los que se utilizó cirugía asistida por robot o técnica con uso de orificios naturales (NOTES), revisiones que fueran exclusivas de patología oncológica, así como casos en niñas, al no disponer de esta tecnología en nuestro medio o no estar en etapa reproductiva, podría incurrirse en un riesgo de transferencia. Así mismo, se eliminaron los artículos sin explicación de las ventajas de la técnica propuesta. CONCLUSIÓN: En pacientes embarazadas con tumor anexial gigante, la laparoscopia con minilaparotomía es una opción de tratamiento segura para el feto y la madre. Con esta técnica se consigue una rápida recuperación, disminución de los riesgos de lesión uterina, pronta reintegración a la vida cotidiana y un buen desenlace cosmético.


Abstract BACKGROUND: Adnexal tumors during pregnancy require safe therapeutic behavior for the mother and the fetus, so the obstetrician must be clear when the surgical option is indicated and within the approach which would be less aggressive for the fetal-maternal binomial. Describing the implementation of laparoscopy with mini laparotomy in a case of adnexal tumor in pregnancy can contribute to understanding the advantages and disadvantages of the surgical strategy in these cases. CLINICAL CASE: Patient aged 29 years, weight 70 kg, height 1.61 m and BMI 27 in the course of 16 weeks of pregnancy, who attended the emergency department due to abdominal pain. Given the persistence of the symptom, a diagnosis of painful abdominal syndrome secondary to a giant adnexal tumour was established. She was scheduled for diagnostic and operative laparoscopy with mini-laparotomy. She was discharged from hospital 24 hours after surgery and the pregnancy ended at 39 weeks. METHODOLOGY: A literature search of the last 10 years was performed in Pubmed under the MeSH terms: adnexal masses pregnancy, adnexal masses pregnancy and laparoscopic surgery. RESULTS: Thirty-four review articles, eight case reports and one editorial were included, the latter nine were considered when they provided information relevant to the knowledge of a surgical technique. We eliminated articles in which robot-assisted surgery or a technique using natural orifices (NOTES) was used, reviews that were exclusive to oncological pathology, as well as cases in girls, as this technology was not available in our environment or they were not in the reproductive stage, which could incur a risk of transfer. Likewise, articles that did not explain the advantages of the proposed technique were eliminated. CONCLUSION: In pregnant patients with giant adnexal tumours, laparoscopy with mini-laparotomy is a safe treatment option for the foetus and the mother. This technique achieves a rapid recovery, reduced risk of uterine injury, early reintegration into daily life and a good cosmetic outcome.

ABSTRACT

Starch is a biocompatible and economical biopolymer in which interest has been shown in obtaining electrospun fibers. This research reports that cassava (CEX) and pea (PEX) starches pretreated by means of reactive extrusion (REX) improved the starches rheological properties and the availability of amylose to obtain fibers. Solutions of CEX and PEX (30-36% w/v) in 38% v/v formic acid were prepared and the rheological properties and electrospinability were studied. The rheological values indicated that to obtain continuous fibers without beads, the entanglement concentration (Ce) must be 1.20 and 1.25 times the concentration of CEX and PEX, respectively. In CEX, a higher amylose content and lower viscosity were obtained than in PEX, which resulted in a greater range of concentrations (32-36% w/v) to obtain continuous fibers without beads with average diameters ranging from 316 ± 65 nm to 394 ± 102 nm. In PEX, continuous fibers without beads were obtained only at 34% w/v with an average diameter of 170 ± 49 nm. This study showed that starches (20-35% amylose) pretreated through REX exhibited electrospinning properties to obtain fibers, opening the opportunity to expand their use in food, environmental, biosensor, and biomedical applications, as vehicles for the administration of bioactive compounds.
