ABSTRACT
Nutcracker syndrome is a vascular anomaly consisting of external compression of the left renal vein by the superior mesenteric artery and the aorta artery. It may manifest with recurrent abdominal or pelvic pain, flank pain, macro- or microscopic hematuria, gonadal varices, or asymptomatic. We present a 10-year-old female patient with chronic progressive pain of more than two years of evolution in the left flank and radiating to the pelvic area. A diagnosis of nutcracker syndrome was made. The surgical resolutuion consisted in the transposition of the left ovarian vein to the left iliac vein. The patient remains asymptomatic at one year of follow-up. In selected patients, venous decongestion of the left renal vein to the inferior vena cava using the ovarian vein is a low-complexity therapeutic possibility with a low incidence of complications.
El síndrome de cascanueces es una anomalía vascular que consiste en la compresión externa de la vena renal izquierda por la arteria mesentérica superior y la arteria aorta. Se puede manifestar como dolor abdominal o pélvico recurrente, dolor en flancos, hematuria macro o microscópica, várices gonadales, o asintomático. Presentamos una paciente de sexo femenino de 10 años de edad, con dolor crónico progresivo de más de dos años de evolución en flanco izquierdo e irradiado a la zona pélvica. Se realizó diagnóstico de síndrome de cascanueces y se decidió la resolución quirúrgica realizando transposición de la vena ovárica izquierda a la vena ilíaca izquierda. La paciente persiste asintomática al año de seguimiento. En pacientes seleccionados, la descongestión venosa de la vena renal izquierda hacia la vena cava inferior, utilizando la vena ovárica, es una posibilidad terapéutica de baja complejidad y con baja incidencia de complicaciones.
ABSTRACT
Crops contamination with aflatoxins (AFs) and zearalenone (ZEA) threaten human and animal health; these mycotoxins are produced by several species of Aspergillus and Fusarium. The objective was to evaluate under field conditions the influence of the wet season on the dissemination of AF- and ZEA-producing fungi via houseflies collected from dairy farms. Ten dairy farms distributed in the semi-arid Central Mexican Plateau were selected. Flies were collected in wet and dry seasons at seven points on each farm using entomological traps. Fungi were isolated from fly carcasses via direct seeding with serial dilutions and wet chamber methods. The production of AFs and ZEA from pure isolates was quantified using indirect competitive ELISA. A total of 693 Aspergillus spp. and 1274 Fusarium spp. isolates were obtained, of which 58.6% produced AFs and 50.0% produced ZEA (491 ± 122; 2521 ± 1295 µg/kg). Houseflies and both fungal genera were invariably present, but compared to the dry season, there was a higher abundance of flies as well as AF- and ZEA-producing fungi in the wet season (p < 0.001; 45.3/231 flies/trap; 8.6/29.6% contaminated flies). These results suggest that rainy-weather conditions on dairy farms increase the spread of AF- and ZEA-producing Aspergillus spp. and Fusarium spp. through houseflies and the incorporation of their mycotoxins into the food chain.

Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) was synthesized following hot injection method and the process was optimized by varying temperature conditions. Four samples at different temperatures viz., 200, 250, 300 and 350 °C were prepared and analyzed using different characterization techniques. Based on the correlation between XRD, Raman and XPS, we conclude that the formation of ZnS and SnS2 occurs at 350 °C but at 200 °C there is no breakdown of the complex as per XRD. According to Raman and XPS analysis, as the temperature rises, the bonds between the metals become weaker, which is visibly seen in Raman and XPS due to the minor peaks of copper sulfide. Scanning electron microscopic analysis confirmed nanometric particles which increase in size with temperature. The photocatalytic evaluation showed that CZTS synthesized at 200 °C performed efficiently in the removal of the two colorants, methylene blue and Rhodamine 6G, achieving 92.80% and 90.65%, respectively. The photocatalytic degradation efficiencies decreased at higher temperatures due to bigger sized CZTS particles as confirmed by SEM results. Computational simulations confirm that CZTS has a highly negative energy -25,764 Ry, confirming its structural stability and higher covalent than ionic character.

This study documents the presence of anti-Neospora caninum antibodies and their association with certain risk factors in 2 deer species from the central region of Veracruz State, Mexico. A total of 90 blood samples, 20 from temazate deer (Mazama temama) and 70 from white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), were taken from 3 farms, and serum samples were subjected to ELISA indirect test to detect N. caninum antibodies; the association between the serological status and the possible risk factors was then estimated. The overall presence of anti-N. caninum antibodies was 57.7% (52/90; 95% CI 46.9-67.9), with positive animals identified on all farms; in white-tailed deer it was 57% and in temazate deer 60%. Prevalence was higher in females than males. Adult animals had a higher prevalence than young ones. The risk analysis identified the age in the adult animal category (odds ratio 5.8) as being associated with the presence of anti-N. caninum antibodies. These results provide evidence of the significant contamination of oocysts in the environment and allow us to estimate the contribution of deer to the sylvatic cycle.

The opposing forces of gene flow and isolation are two major processes shaping genetic diversity. Understanding how these vary across space and time is necessary to identify the environmental features that promote diversification. The detection of considerable geographic structure in taxa from the arid Nearctic has prompted research into the drivers of isolation in the region. Several geographic features have been proposed as barriers to gene flow, including the Colorado River, Western Continental Divide (WCD), and a hypothetical Mid-Peninsular Seaway in Baja California. However, recent studies suggest that the role of barriers in genetic differentiation may have been overestimated when compared to other mechanisms of divergence. In this study, we infer historical and spatial patterns of connectivity and isolation in Desert Spiny Lizards (Sceloporus magister) and Baja Spiny Lizards (Sceloporus zosteromus), which together form a species complex composed of parapatric lineages with wide distributions in arid western North America. Our analyses incorporate mitochondrial sequences, genomic-scale data, and past and present climatic data to evaluate the nature and strength of barriers to gene flow in the region. Our approach relies on estimates of migration under the multispecies coalescent to understand the history of lineage divergence in the face of gene flow. Results show that the S. magister complex is geographically structured, but we also detect instances of gene flow. The WCD is a strong barrier to gene flow, while the Colorado River is more permeable. Analyses yield conflicting results for the catalyst of differentiation of peninsular lineages in S. zosteromus. Our study shows how large-scale genomic data for thoroughly sampled species can shed new light on biogeography. Furthermore, our approach highlights the need for the combined analysis of multiple sources of evidence to adequately characterize the drivers of divergence.

The objective of the study was to estimate the seroprevalence of Neospora caninum and Toxoplasma gondii in venison from Aguascalientes, Mexico, their possible association with some risk factors, and to identify the presence of parasite DNA in blood and tissues. For this study, 5 farms and four species of venison were included, where 43 blood serum samples were obtained and in 37 of these animals a peripheral blood sample was also obtained; from hunted deer, 6 liver and 2 heart samples were obtained. The samples were analyzed by ELISA and PCR tests, respectively. The association between the serological status and the possible risk factors was estimated. The overall seroprevalence in N. caninum was 47% (20/43; CI 95% 31-62), with positive animals in all farms in a range of 18 to 100%, while for T. gondii it was 49% (21/43; CI 95% 33-64), with positive animals in 80% of farms in a range of 18 to 100%. The prevalence of N. caninum DNA detection in blood was 59% (22/37; CI 95% 42-74), with positive animals in all farms, in a range of 45 to 100%, while in T. gondii it was 76% (28/37; CI 95% 58-87), with positive animals in all farms, in a range of 56 to 100%. Age (> 4 years) was identified as associated with seroprevalence in N. caninum (OR 5.2) and in T. gondii (OR 12.7). DNA from both parasites was detected in the liver and heart samples. The results shown that venison populations included in the study are living in an environment highly contaminated with oocysts excreted by the definitive host.

La muerte involucra, para los médicos, un análisis complejo que determina su actitud hacia el paciente, principalmente los comportamientos en situaciones de diagnóstico, tratamiento y la relación médico-paciente. Objetivos. 1) Describir las actitudes del personal médico de un hospital pediátrico ante la muerte. 2) Explorar si existen factores asociados a esas actitudes. Población y métodos. Estudio transversal, por encuesta. Se invitó a los médicos de un hospital pediátrico de tercer nivel de la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, Argentina, a completar el Cuestionario de actitud ante la muerte (CAM). Se investigaron variables sociodemográficas, categoría profesional y área laboral, haber presenciado la muerte de pacientes, autopercepción de actitud positiva ante la muerte y actitud ante la muerte según CAM. Resultados. Entre el 01 de junio de 2021 y el 01 de junio de 2022 se incluyeron 362 participantes, con edad media de 39,88 (± 11,56) años y experiencia médica asistencial de 14,06 (± 11,97) años. Presentaron actitud positiva 35 (9,67 %). Encontramos significancia estadística para mayor probabilidad de actitud positiva en edad ≥ 40 años (p = 0,02, IC95 % 1,1-3,9), experiencia médica asistencial ≥ 14 años (p = 0,042, IC95 % 1-4,1), creencia religiosa (p = 0,003, IC95 % 1,4-10,5), práctica religiosa activa (p <0,001, IC95 % 1,6-6,9) y autopercepción positiva ante la muerte (p = 0,002, IC95 % 1,7-30,8). Conclusiones. El 9,67 % de los encuestados presentó actitud positiva ante la muerte. Los factores asociados a ella fueron edad ≥ 40 años, experiencia médica asistencial ≥ 14 años, creencia religiosa, práctica religiosa activa y la autopercepción personal de actitud positiva ante la muerte.

Objectives. 1) To describe the attitudes towards death among medical staff working at a children's hospital. 2) To explore factors associated with such attitudes. Population and methods. Cross-sectional, survey study. The physicians working at a tertiary care children's hospital completed the Questionnaire of attitudes towards death (QAD). Sociodemographic variables, professional category, work setting, having witnessed the death of patients, self-perception of a positive attitude towards death, and attitude towards death according to the QAD were studied. Results. Between June 1st, 2021 and June 1st, 2022, 362 participants were included; mean age: 39.88 years (± 11.56), health care experience: 14.06 years (± 11.97). A positive attitude was observed in 35 (9.67%). A statistical significance was observed for a greater probability of a positive attitude among those who were ≥ 40 years old (p = 0.02, 95% CI: 1.13.9), had health care experience for ≥ 14 years (p = 0.042, 95% CI: 14.1), had a religious belief (p = 0.003, 95% CI: 1.410.5), actively practiced their religion (p < 0.001, 95% CI: 1.66.9), and had a positive self-perception in the face of death (p = 0.002, 95% CI: 1.730.8). Conclusions. A positive attitude towards death was observed in 9.67% of surveyed participants. Associated factors were age ≥ 40 years, health care experience for ≥ 14 years, religious belief, active religious practice, and self-perception of a positive attitude towards death.

The objective of this study was to describe the epidemiology of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum infection by estimating seroprevalence and its association with certain risk factors in goats from Aguascalientes, Mexico. A total of 150 blood samples was taken from 10 farms and serum samples were subjected to enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay indirect test to detect T. gondii and N. caninum antibodies; the association between seroprevalence and some potential risk factors was estimated through logistic regression analysis. The general seroprevalence for T. gondii was 12.6%, observed in the farms in a range of 6.6 to 60%, finding seropositive animals in 80% of them; for N. caninum the seroprevalence was 3.3% and in farms a range of 6.6 to 13.3% was identified and 30% of them had at least 1 seropositive animal. The coinfection was 0.66%. The risk analysis for T. gondii identified a history of abortions (odds ratio 9.25) as a factor associated with seroprevalence; for N. caninum, no risk factor was identified.

Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l. is an intra- and peridomiciliary tick of medical and veterinary importance, whose control is carried out through the application of various ixodicides, to which it can develop resistance. The objective of this work was to determine the discriminant doses (d.d.) to identify resistance against three ixodicides - fipronil, flumethrin and coumaphos - in R. sanguineus s.l. larvae originating from Mexico. Engorged ticks were collected from naturally infested dogs residing in rural communities in five Mexican states; the dogs had no history of recent treatment with ixodicides. All ticks were identified as R. sanguineus s.l. They were incubated for 25 days and their progeny was used in the larval package test (LPT) to be exposed to d.d. as determined in Rhipicephalus microplus, and those that were susceptible were analyzed using the LPT with six concentrations, for fipronil from 0.1 to 0.003125%, for flumethrin from 0.02 to 0.000625% and for coumaphos from 0.4 to 0.0125%. Mortality was analyzed with Probit methodology, to calculate the 50 and 99% lethal concentrations (LC50 and LC99). The d.d. was determined as a consensus value by multiplying the LC99 value × 2. Nine double susceptible samples (fipronil + flumethrin) and one triple susceptible sample (fipronil + flumethrin + coumaphos) were found; the d.d. determined were fipronil 0.05%, flumethrin 0.01% and coumaphos 0.43%. These doses can be used to rapidly and inexpensively identify resistant populations in samples collected in the field.
ABSTRACT
CONTEXT AND PURPOSE: This work aimed to study the seroprevalence of natural infection by T. gondii in different population segments of dogs from Aguascalientes, Mexico as well as its possible association with some risk factors. METHODS: The study included 210 clinically healthy dogs from three population segments: rural, stray and pet. A blood serum sample was collected on a single occasion and processed by indirect immunofluorescence considering a dilution of 1:16 as a positive reaction; the association between the presence of antibodies and the potential risk factors was estimated with logistic regression. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of anti-T. gondii antibodies in the studied population was 59% (123/210; CI 95% 51-65) being different between population segments, in rural dogs 74% (59/80; CI 95% 62-82), in stray dogs 60% (48/80; CI 95% 48-70) and in pet dogs 32% (16/50; CI 95% 19-46), the titers of the positive sera were in a range of 1:16-1:128. In rural dogs the seroprevalence according to the municipality was in a range of 55% to 100% finding positive dogs in all the studied municipalities. The zootechnical function of guarding the property in rural dogs was identified as a risk factor (OR 2.4), while in pet dogs it was living with cats (OR 7) as well as sharing the drinking water container (OR 4); in stray dogs it was not possible to identify any risk factor. CONCLUSIONS: This study documents the wide presence of anti-T. gondii antibodies in the population groups examined, this being more important in rural dogs.

The brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l., is considered the most widely distributed three-host tick in the world and has medical and veterinary importance; the control of infestation is carried out with acaricides, towards which it can develop resistance. This study aimed to determine the discriminant dose (d.d) of amitraz to identify resistance in R. sanguineus s.l. larvae natives from Mexico and to evaluate its application in field-collected ticks. Engorged ticks were collected from naturally infested dogs residing in rural communities and were incubated for 25 days, and their progeny was used in a larval immersion test (LIT) to be exposed to the d.d. determined in Rhipicephalus microplus, and those that were susceptible were analyzed using the LIT in six concentrations. Mortality was analyzed through probit methodology to calculate the lethal concentration (LC) 50 and 99. The d.d. was determined as a consensus value by multiplying the LC99 × 2, and then, we proceeded to evaluate it in in-field samples by using the LIT technique. The d.d. calculated was 4 ppm. The in-field evaluation found 64% of the resistant samples to amitraz with mortality percentages between 98.3% and 0.35%. This dose can be used to rapidly and inexpensively identify resistant populations in samples collected in the field.

PURPOSE: Resistant starch (RS) content has exhibited beneficial effects on glycemic control; however, few studies have investigated the effects of this substance on postprandial responses and appetite in subjects with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Here, we aimed to examine the effects of RS from two sources on glycemic response (GR), postprandial lipemia, and appetite in subjects with T2D. METHODS: In a randomized and crossover study, 17 subjects with T2D consumed native banana starch (NBS), high-amylose maize starch (HMS) or digestible maize starch (DMS) for 4 days. On day 5, a 6-h oral meal tolerance test (MTT) was performed to evaluate glycemic and insulinemic responses as well as postprandial lipemia. Besides, subjective appetite assessment was measured using a visual analogue scale. RESULTS: NBS induced a reduction on fasting glycemia, glycemia peak and insulinemic response during MTT. However, no modifications on postprandial lipemia were observed after RS treatments. Both NBS and HMS reduced hunger and increased satiety. CONCLUSION: NBS supplementation induced more beneficial effects on glycemic metabolism than HMS even when all interventions were matched for digestible starch content. RS intake did not modify postprandial lipemia, however, positively affected subjective appetite rates. Metastatic malignancies of the oral cavity are rare lesions, accounting for only 1-4% of all oral malignancies, and can occur in the jaw bones, the oral soft tissues, or even both. Although hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common primary hepatic tumor, no more than 1% of the cases show oral involvement. When metastatic tumor involves the oral cavity, the most frequent site is the posterior angle of the mandible. Histologically, hence, immunohistochemical markers are used for diagnosis. Glypican-3 and HepPar1 are the markers that can be used to confirm the microscopic diagnosis of HCC. Very rarely, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) metastasizes to the oral cavity, and such cases have a poor prognosis due to delay in diagnosis. We present a 74-year-old male with a metastasis of HCC in the left mandibular body as the first manifestation. Histologic examination confirmed metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma in the oral mucosa with immunohistochemical (IHC) markers. A review of pertinent literature was performed. Given the rarity of the disease, treatment principles are based mainly on retrospective series and case reports. We report an exceptionally unusual presentation with few cases (<70) reported in the literature, thus representing a diagnostic challenge.
ABSTRACT
Anaerobic digestion (AD) has recently been studied to obtain products of greater interest than biogas, such as volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and phytoregulators. The effect of the initial pH of cow manure and the fermentation time of the AD on the microbial composition, VFAs, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and gibberellic acid (GA3) production was evaluated. The cow manure (7% solids) was adjusted to initial pH values of 5.5, 6.5, 7.5, and 8.5, and the AD products were analyzed every four days until day 20. The initial pH and the fermentation time had an important effect on the production of metabolites. During AD, only the hydrolytic and acidogenic stages were identified, and the bacteria found were from the phyla Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, and Spirochaetes. The most abundant genera produced in the four AD were Caproiciproducens, Clostridium sensu stricto 1, Romboutsia, Paeniclostridium, Turicibacter, Peptostreptococcaceae, Ruminococcaceae and Fonticella. The highest amount of VFAs was obtained at pH 8.5, and the production of the acids was butyric > acetic > propionic. The maximum production of GA3 and IAA was at an initial pH of 6.5 on day 20 and a pH of 5.5 on day 4, respectively. There was a strong correlation (> 0.8) between the most abundant microorganisms and the production of VFAs and GA3. The anaerobic digestion of cow manure is a good alternative for the production of VFAs, GA3 and IAA.
ABSTRACT
This research presents the technical considerations for implementing the CeCi (Computer Electronic Communication Interface) social robot. In this case, this robot responds to the need to achieve technological development in an emerging country with the aim of social impact and social interaction. There are two problems with the social robots currently on the market, which are the main focus of this research. First, their costs are not affordable for companies, universities, or individuals in emerging countries. The second is that their design is exclusively oriented to the functional part with a vision inherent to the engineers who create them without considering the vision, preferences, or requirements of the end users, especially for their social interaction. This last reason ends causing an aversion to the use of this type of robot. In response to the issues raised, a low-cost prototype is proposed, starting from a commercial platform for research development and using open source code. The robot design presented here is centered on the criteria and preferences of the end user, prioritizing acceptability for social interaction. This article details the selection process and hardware capabilities of the robot. Moreover, a programming section is provided to introduce the different software packages used and adapted for the social interaction, the main functions implemented, as well as the new and original part of the proposal. Finally, a list of applications currently developed with the robot and possible applications for future research are discussed.

The objectives of the study were to estimate the prevalence of anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in free-range chickens in Aguascalientes, Mexico, its association with certain risk factors, and the frequency of parasite DNA in the heart. Eighty-one small rural family farms were included, and blood and heart samples were taken from 150 clinically healthy, adult, free-range chickens. Serum samples were processed by indirect immunofluorescence antibody test considering a dilution of 1:16 as a positive reaction, while the DNA detection was done by PCR. The correlation between the presence of antibodies and the potential risk factors was estimated with logistic regression. The overall seroprevalence in the examined populations was 67%, with a range from 33% to 100% among municipalities, and 78% of the farms having at least one seropositive bird. The PCR test identified the presence of parasite DNA for one case only. Among the variables, the presence of cats and the presence of other animal species on the farm were the ones that had the highest values, while the presence of feral cats and the presence of noxious fauna were also identified as potential risk factors. The results indicate high soil contamination by T. gondii oocysts, which implies the active role of cats living on the farms.

Aspergillus species can produce aflatoxins (AFs), which can severely affect human and animal health. The objective was to evaluate the efficacy of reducing AF contamination of a non-aflatoxigenic isolate of A. flavus experimentally coinoculated with different aflatoxigenic strains in whole plant (WP), corn silage (CS), immature grains (IG) and in culture media (CM). An L-morphotype of A. flavus (CS1) was obtained from CS in a dairy farm located in the Mexican Highland Plateau; The CS1 failed to amplify the AFs biosynthetic pathway regulatory gene (aflR). Monosporic CS1 isolates were coinoculated in WP, CS, IG and CM, together with A. flavus strains with known aflatoxigenic capacity (originating from Cuautitlán and Tamaulipas, Mexico), and native isolates from concentrate feed (CF1, CF2 and CF3) and CS (CS2, CS3). AF production was evaluated by HPLC and fungal growth rate was measured on culture media. The positive control strains and those isolated from CF produced a large average amount of AFs (15,622 ± 3952 and 12,189 ± 3311 µg/kg), whereas A. flavus strains obtained from CS produced a lower AF concentration (126 ± 25.9 µg/kg). CS1 was efficient (p < 0.01) in decreasing AF concentrations when coinoculated together with CF, CS and aflatoxigenic positive control strains (71.6−88.7, 51.0−51.1 and 63.1−71.5%) on WP, CS, IG and CM substrates (73.9−78.2, 65.1−73.7, 63.8−68.4 and 57.4−67.6%). The results suggest that the non-aflatoxigenic isolate can be an effective tool to reduce AF contamination in feed and to minimize the presence of its metabolites in raw milk and dairy products intended for human nutrition.
