ABSTRACT

Almost 250 years ago the autopsy of Agustin de Ahumada y Villalon was performed by Domingo Russi, Chief Surgeon at the Royal Hospital for Natives in Mexico City. This situation will be unimportant if the former wasn't the 42nd Viceroy of New Spain; his autopsy showed a situs inversus totalis, and probably this is the first scientific report of such malformation. For many years the report by Mathew Baillie (1761-1823) of an autopsy with the same findings as the first of its kind was believed, but actually the former almost three decades earlier was performed. In 1688 Jean M. Mery (1645-1722) at the Paris Academy of Medicine gave a talk reporting autopsy findings of the same malformations. Some aspects of the life of both personages are described, the autopsy report is showed and a short history about postmortem studies are mentioned mainly those made in Spain and New Spain. Through many centuries a very close relationship has been kept and medicine has not been the exception, in the field of human pathology in the middle third of the 20th century a distinguished pathologist, Dr. Isaac Costero-Tudanca, migrated to Mexico and gave flowering to pathology and a great generation of Mexican pathologists was generated headed by Dr. Ruy Perez-Tamayo.

ABSTRACT

Photocatalysis using ZnO-Fe2O3 coupled catalyst removed partially the organic matter dissolved in kraft black liquor obtained from pinus wood cooking. The photo-assisted oxidation using different ZnO/Fe2O3 ratios was studied following the CO, evolution during the course of the reaction. A synergy of the composite improves the mineralization observed. The optimal ZnO to Fe2O3 ratio varied from 0.5 to 0.7 which allowed the highest mineralization rates.

ABSTRACT

The photocatalytic degradation of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in aqueous solution was investigated using TiO2 catalysts. The samples were prepared by the sol-gel method using different gelation pH and different calcination temperatures. The solids were characterized by specific surface area, X-ray diffraction, UV-Vis absorbance, FTIR and pentachlorophenol adsorption. The catalytic activity of the solids was evaluated in a conventional photoreactor at 298 K using 30 ppm of pentachlorophenol. It was found that the reaction follows a first-order reaction and the kinetic constant values change slightly with the pH of gelation and more significantly with the calcination temperature.

ABSTRACT

We compared the safety, tolerability and efficacy of the HMGCoA reductase inhibitor pravastatin and probucol in the treatment of patients with primary hypercholesterolemia using an active, drug controlled, double blind, randomized, double placebo design. Patients were included if LDL-C levels after a minimum of six weeks on an AHA phase I diet were greater than 150 mg/dL and triglycerides were less than 350 mg/dL. Included patients were randomly assigned to either pravastatin 40 mg pm or probucol 500 mg bi. They also received matching placebos for each drug. The active drug period lasted 16 weeks, during which the patients were seen at 4, 8, 12 and 16 weeks after baseline. There were no significant differences in baseline values between both treatment groups. Significantly lower values of total cholesterol and LDL-C were observed with pravastatin as compared to probucol. While a non significant increase of HDL-C was observed with pravastatin, a remarkable and statistically significant decrease was observed with probucol. A large dispersion of triglycerides levels was observed with both drugs and no statistically significant changes were demonstrated. Both pravastatin and probucol were well tolerated: only minimal clinical and laboratory changes, not considered to have been drug-related, were observed. No changes, considered drug-related, were observed in the cristalline lens. This study shows an overall superiority of pravastatin over probucol with significant larger decreases of total cholesterol and LDL-C and a better effect on HDL-C.

ABSTRACT

Fournier gangrene is a disease which primarily affects adults. This finding makes it rarely seen within the pediatric population. Therefore, we feel it convenient to inform of a case of Fournier gangrene which occurred in an eight day old neonate, successfully treated with surgical debridement, the administering of solutions and antibiotics. This is the youngest patient ever described in the medical literature. Neonate; Fournier; gangrene.
