ABSTRACT

Optical nonlinearities are one of the most fascinating properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials. While tremendous efforts have been made to find and optimize the second-order optical nonlinearity in enormous 2D materials, opportunities to explore higher-order ones are elusive because of the much lower efficiency. Here, we report the giant high odd-order optical nonlinearities in centrosymmetric correlated van der Waals insulator manganese phosphorus triselenide. When illuminated by two near-infrared femtosecond lasers, the sample generates a series of profound four- and six-wave mixing outputs. The near-infrared third-order nonlinear susceptibility reaches near the highest record values of 2D materials. Comparative measurements to other prototypical nonlinear optical materials [lithium niobate, gallium(II) selenide, and tungsten disulfide] reveal its extraordinary wave mixing efficiency. The wave mixing processes are further used for nonlinear optical waveguide with multicolor emission. Our work highlights the promising prospect for future research of the nonlinear light-matter interactions in the correlated 2D system and for potential nonlinear photonic applications.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of dapagliflozin in patients with acute heart failure remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of dapagliflozin (DAPA) on loop diuretics use and 90-day readmission in patients with acute heart failure. METHODS: In a retrospective cohort study, patients diagnosed with acute heart failure or chronic heart failure with acute exacerbation admitted to Fuyang People's Hospital from January 2021 to April 2023, this study used DAPA (at a dose of 10 mg once daily) in combination with standard treatment. The patients were divided into DAPA group and DAPA-Free group based on whether they used DAPA in acute heart failure. To minimize the influence of confounding factors and ensure comparability between groups, we used propensity score matching (PSM). RESULTS: A total of 399 patients were included, with 206 patients (51.63%) in the DAPA group and 193 patients (48.37%) in the DAPA-Free group. PSM produced 160 pairs. After PSM, there were no statistically significant differences between the DAPA and DAPA-Free groups in terms of readmission of all causes (16.88% vs. 18.12%, OR 0.9141, 95% CI 0.5385-1.552, log rank P = 0.739) or readmission for heart failure (11.88% vs. 15.0%, OR 0.9077, 95% CI 0.4441-1.469, log rank P = 0.484) after 90-day follow-up. Patients in the DAPA group had a lower mean daily dose of intravenous loop diuretics compared to the DAPA-Free group (20 mg/d vs. 30.00 mg/d, P<0.001), lower total loop diuretic dose during hospitalization (106.06 ± 31.23 mg vs. 144.50 ± 45.39 mg, P = 0.038) and a decreased number of diuretic types used (11.88% vs. 23.12%, P = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS: DAPA reduced the dose of intravenous loop diuretics. However, it did not improve all-cause readmission for 90 days or readmission for heart failure after discharge.

ABSTRACT

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), together with carbon monoxide (CO) and nitric oxide (NO), is recognized as a vital gasotransmitter. H2S is biosynthesized by enzymatic pathways in the skin and exerts significant physiological effects on a variety of biological processes, such as apoptosis, modulation of inflammation, cellular proliferation, and regulation of vasodilation. As a major health problem, dermatological diseases affect a large proportion of the population every day. It is urgent to design and develop effective drugs to deal with dermatological diseases. Dermatological diseases can arise from a multitude of etiologies, including neoplastic growth, infectious agents, and inflammatory processes. The abnormal metabolism of H2S is associated with many dermatological diseases, such as melanoma, fibrotic diseases, and psoriasis, suggesting its therapeutic potential in the treatment of these diseases. In addition, therapies based on H2S donors are being developed to treat some of these conditions. In the review, we discuss recent advances in the function of H2S in normal skin, the role of altering H2S metabolism in dermatological diseases, and the therapeutic potential of diverse H2S donors for the treatment of dermatological diseases.

ABSTRACT

Computer-aided implant surgery has undergone continuous development in recent years. In this study, active and passive systems of dynamic navigation were divided into active dynamic navigation system group and passive dynamic navigation system group (ADG and PDG), respectively. Active, passive and semi-active implant robots were divided into active robot group, passive robot group and semi-active robot group (ARG, PRG and SRG), respectively. Each group placed two implants (FDI tooth positions 31 and 36) in a model 12 times. The accuracy of 216 implants in 108 models were analysed. The coronal deviations of ADG, PDG, ARG, PRG and SRG were 0.85 ± 0.17 mm, 1.05 ± 0.42 mm, 0.29 ± 0.15 mm, 0.40 ± 0.16 mm and 0.33 ± 0.14 mm, respectively. The apical deviations of the five groups were 1.11 ± 0.23 mm, 1.07 ± 0.38 mm, 0.29 ± 0.15 mm, 0.50 ± 0.19 mm and 0.36 ± 0.16 mm, respectively. The axial deviations of the five groups were 1.78 ± 0.73°, 1.99 ± 1.20°, 0.61 ± 0.25°, 1.04 ± 0.37° and 0.42 ± 0.18°, respectively. The coronal, apical and axial deviations of ADG were higher than those of ARG, PRG and SRG (all P < 0.001). Similarly, the coronal, apical and axial deviations of PDG were higher than those of ARG, PRG, and SRG (all P < 0.001). Dynamic and robotic computer-aided implant surgery may show good implant accuracy in vitro. However, the accuracy and stability of implant robots are higher than those of dynamic navigation systems.

ABSTRACT

The normal modes, i.e., the eigensolutions to the dispersion relation equation, are the most fundamental properties of a plasma. The real part indicates the intrinsic oscillation frequency while the imaginary part the Landau damping rate. In most of the literature, the normal modes of quantum plasmas are obtained by means of small damping approximation, which is invalid for high-k modes. In this paper, we solve the exact dispersion relations via the analytical continuation scheme, and, due to the multi-value nature of the Fermi-Dirac distribution, reformation of the complex Riemann surface is required. It is found that the topological shape of the root locus in quantum plasmas is quite different from classical ones, in which both real and imaginary frequencies of high-k modes increase with k steeper than the typical linear behavior in classical plasmas. As a result, the time-evolving behavior of a high-k initial perturbation becomes ballistic-like in quantum plasmas.

ABSTRACT

Chiral nanostructures allow engineering of chiroptical responses; however, their design usually relies on empirical approaches and extensive numerical simulations. It remains unclear if a general strategy exists to enhance and maximize the intrinsic chirality of subwavelength photonic structures. Here, we suggest a microscopic theory and uncover the origin of strong chiral responses of resonant nanostructures. We reveal that the reactive helicity density is critically important for achieving maximum chirality at resonances. We demonstrate our general concept on the examples of planar photonic crystal slabs and metasurfaces, where out-of-plane mirror symmetry is broken by a bilayer design. Our findings provide a general recipe for designing photonic structures with maximum chirality, paving the way toward many applications, including chiral sensing, chiral emitters and detectors, and chiral quantum optics.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The progression of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is significantly influenced by circular RNAs (circRNAs), especially in tumor hypoxia microenvironment. However, the precise functions and underlying mechanisms of dysregulated circRNAs in NSCLC remain largely unexplored. METHODS: Differentially expressed circRNAs in NSCLC tissues were identified through high-throughput RNA sequencing. The characteristics of circ_0007386 were rigorously confirmed via Sanger sequencing, RNase R treatment and actinomycin D treatment. The effects of circ_0007386 on proliferation and apoptosis were investigated using CCK8, cloning formation assays, TUNEL staining, and flow cytometry assays in vitro. In vivo, xenograft tumor models were used to evaluate its impact on proliferation. Mechanistically, the regulatory relationships of circ_0007386, miR-383-5p and CIRBP were examined through dual luciferase reporter assays and rescue experiments. Additionally, we detected the binding of EIF4A3 to CRIM1 pre-mRNA by RNA immunoprecipitation and the interaction between YAP1 and EIF4A3 under hypoxic conditions by co-immunoprecipitation. RESULTS: Our investigation revealed a novel circRNA, designated as circ_0007386, that was upregulated in NSCLC tissues and cell lines. Circ_0007386 modulated proliferation and apoptosis in NSCLC both in vitro and in vivo. Functionally, circ_0007386 acted as a sponge for miR-383-5p, targeting CIRBP, which influenced NSCLC cell proliferation and apoptosis via the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. Furthermore, under hypoxic conditions, the interaction between YAP1 and EIF4A3 was enhanced, leading to the displacement of EIF4A4 from binding to CRIM1 pre-mRNA. This facilitated the back-splicing of CRIM1 pre-mRNA, increasing the formation of circ_0007386. The circ_0007386/miR-383-5p/CIRBP axis was significantly associated with the clinical features and prognosis of NSCLC patients. CONCLUSIONS: Circ_0007386, regulated by YAP1-EIF4A3 interaction under hypoxia conditions, plays an oncogenic role in NSCLC progression via the miR-383-5p/CIRBP axis.

ABSTRACT

Volatile organic compounds have drawn significant attention in recent years as a novel tool for non-invasive detection of a wide range of diseases, including gastrointestinal cancers, for which the need for effective, affordable, and non-invasive screening methods is substantial. Sample preparation is a fundamental step that greatly influences the quality of results and the feasibility of wide-range applications. This review summarizes sampling methods used in studies aiming at testing the diagnostic value of volatile organic compounds in gastrointestinal cancers, discussing in detail some of the recent advancements in automated sampling techniques. Finally, we propose some directions in which sample collection and processing can improve for VOC analysis to be popularized in clinical settings.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Digestive system cancers constitute a significant number of cancer cases, but their burden is not uniform. As Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN) 2022 has recently updated its estimates of cancer burden, we aimed to investigate the burden of six major digestive system cancers both worldwide and in China, along with geographical and temporal variations in cancer-specific incidence and mortality. METHODS: We extracted data on primary cancers of the esophagus, stomach, colorectum, liver, pancreas, and gallbladder from the GLOBOCAN database for 2022. Age-standardized incidence and mortality rates were calculated and stratified by sex, country, region, and human development index (HDI). We used the 2022 revision of the World Population Prospects (United Nations) to obtain demographic data for various age groups in China from 1988 to 2012 and used the joinpoint model and the average annual percentage change (AAPC) to analyze cancer incidence trends in China. RESULTS: In 2022, the estimated global incidence of digestive system cancers reached 4,905,882, with an estimated 3,324,774 cancer-related deaths. Colorectal cancer was most prevalent in terms of incidence and mortality. There was a significant correlation between the burden of gastrointestinal cancers and country HDI. From 1988 to 2012, the incidence of esophageal, gastric, and liver cancers declined in China, whereas colorectal and pancreatic cancer incidences continued to increase. By 2050, colorectal and liver cancers are projected to remain the leading cancer types in China in terms of incidence and mortality, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Digestive system cancers remain a significant public health challenge globally and in China. Although progress has been made in the prevention and control of some cancers, the burden of digestive system cancers persists. The implementation of tertiary prevention strategies must be intensified to reduce the incidence and mortality of digestive system cancers, mitigating their impact on public health.

The quasi-2-day wave (Q2DW) is a large temperature disturbance in the austral summer-time mesosphere. Its decay-phase movement and phase-speed are poorly understood. Q2DW events observed by the microwave limb sounder (MLS) onboard the NASA Aura satellite reveal that during the temperature Q2DW's decay-phase, the Q2DW temperature disturbance is still substantial, but its phase-speed reduces exponentially, on average, from around -70 to -20 m/s in around 30-days. Observations also reveal significant interannual variability in these phase-speed values. Q2DW events simulated by the extended Canadian middle atmosphere model (eCMAM) reveal that during the Q2DW decay-phase, the temperature Q2DW phase-speed is strongly correlated with the summer mesosphere easterly jet (SMEJ) wind values. eCMAM also shows that the phase-speed interannual variabilities partially reflect the interannual variabilities of the SMEJ. Planetary-wave diagnostics indicate that during the Q2DW's decay phase, there is still an active transfer of momentum from the SMEJ into Q2DW. The model simulations therefore indicate that the SMEJ plays a substantial role in the decaying temperature Q2DW phase-speed variabilities observed by MLS. This adds to our knowledge of how the SMEJ affects the Q2DW.

ABSTRACT

Manganous-manganic oxide (Mn3O4), akin to other manganese-based oxides, faces several critical challenges such as substantial capacity fading and limited rate performance due to its inferior electrical conductivity, in addition to the inevitable dissociation of Mn 2+ . To address these issues, we introduce for the first time a novel carbon-coated Mn3O4/Na2CO3 (Mn3O4/Na2CO3/C) composite material. Comprehensive characterizations indicate that Na2CO3 effectively curtails Mn 2+ dissolution, enhances carbon encapsulation throughout charging/discharging cycles, and exposes additional active sites on the Mn3O4/Na2CO3/C composite. Electrochemical assessments confirm that the Mn3O4/Na2CO3/C-2 cathode exhibits exceptional electrochemical performance, outperforming other cathodes in the ZnSO4 system. Moreover, the Mn3O4/Na2CO3/C-2 cathode delivers a high specific capacity of ~550 mAh g -1 at 0.1 A g -1 and maintains a significant capacity of ~230 mAh g -1 after 360 cycles at 1.0 A g -1 within the 2.0 M ZnSO4+0.2 M MnSO4 electrolyte system, demonstrating its potential as a high-performance cathode material for aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

As numerous countries around the world have entered an aging society currently, understanding the impact of aging on human health becomes critically important. Notably, aging is associated with increased prevalence of age-related diseases, with the lungs being particularly susceptible. Aging contributes to a decline in lung function, including respiratory disorders, inflammation, and oxidative stress. Therefore, it is a very important to identify and develop active substances that can mitigate lung cell aging. In current study, we evaluated the impact of Taraxasterol on lung cell senescence, showing that Taraxasterol can alleviate lung cell senescence, as evidenced by reductions in senescence-related marker molecules, including p16 and p21. Additionally, Taraxasterol was found to ameliorate inflammation and oxidative stress in lung cells. Further mechanistic studies indicated that Taraxasterol exerts anti-aging effects through the PGC1α/NRF1 signaling pathway in lung cell models. Since aging is also closely related to lung cancer, we also explored the potential anti-tumor effect of taraxasterol. Utilizing non-small cell lung cancer cells (NSCLC) as a model, we systematically study the anti-tumor effect of Taraxasterol both in vivo and in vitro. Our findings suggest that Taraxasterol exhibited anti-cancer effect through EGFR-mediated signaling. Taken together, Taraxasterol shows dual biological activities, offering promising anti-aging and anti-lung cancer benefits.

In recent years, the impact of age-related diseases on human health has become increasingly severe, and developing effective drugs to deal with these diseases has become an urgent task. Considering the essential regulatory role of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in these diseases, it is regarded as a promising target for treatment. H2S is a novel gaseous transmitter involved in many critical physiological activities, including anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, and angiogenesis. H2S also regulates cell activities such as cell proliferation, migration, invasion, apoptosis, and autophagy. These regulatory effects of H2S contribute to relieving and treating age-related diseases. In this review, we mainly focus on the pathogenesis and treatment prospects of H2S in regulating age-related diseases.

ABSTRACT

Fms-like tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3) mutations, present in over 30% of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cases and dominated by FLT3-internal tandem duplication (FLT3-ITD), are associated with poor outcomes in patients with AML. While tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs; e.g., gilteritinib) are effective, they face challenges such as drug resistance, relapse, and high costs. Here, we report that metformin, a cheap, safe, and widely used anti-diabetic agent, exhibits a striking synergistic effect with gilteritinib in treating FLT3-ITD AML. Metformin significantly sensitizes FLT3-ITD AML cells (including TKI-resistant ones) to gilteritinib. Metformin plus gilteritinib (low dose) dramatically suppresses leukemia progression and prolongs survival in FLT3-ITD AML mouse models. Mechanistically, the combinational treatment cooperatively suppresses polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1) expression and phosphorylation of FLT3/STAT5/ERK/mTOR. Clinical analysis also shows improved survival rates in patients with FLT3-ITD AML taking metformin. Thus, the metformin/gilteritinib combination represents a promising and cost-effective treatment for patients with FLT3-mutated AML, particularly for those with low income/affordability.

ABSTRACT

Heart rate (HR) and respiration rate (RR) play an important role in the study of complex behaviors and their physiological correlations in non-human primates (NHPs). However, collecting HR and RR information is often challenging, involving either invasive implants or tedious behavioral training, and there are currently few established simple and non-invasive techniques for HR and RR measurement in NHPs owing to their stress response or indocility. In this study, we employed a frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar to design a novel contactless HR and RR monitoring system. The designed system can estimate HR and RR in real time by placing the FMCW radar on the cage and facing the chest of both awake and anesthetized macaques, the NHP investigated in this study. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms existing methods, with averaged absolute errors between the reference monitor and radar estimates of 0.77 beats per minute (bpm) and 1.29 respirations per minute (rpm) for HR and RR, respectively. In summary, we believe that the proposed non-invasive and contactless estimation method could be generalized as a HR and RR monitoring tool for NHPs. Furthermore, after modifying the radar signal-processing algorithms, it also shows promise for applications in other experimental animals for animal welfare, behavioral, neurological, and ethological research.

ABSTRACT

Late-onset hypogonadism (LOH) is an age-related syndrome characterized by deficiency of serum testosterone produced by Leydig cells. Previous evidence suggested that microRNA (miR)-361-3p can serve as a promising biomarker for LOH. Nonetheless, its detailed function and molecular mechanism in LOH remain unclarified. The 24-month-old male mice were selected as an animal LOH model, and mouse Leydig cell line TM3 was stimulated with H2O2. ELISA was employed for testosterone level evaluation. Hematoxylin-eosin staining was implemented for histologic analysis of mouse testicular tissues. Western blotting and RT-qPCR were utilized for evaluating molecular protein and RNA expression, respectively. Functional experiments were conducted to test miR-361-5p roles. Luciferase reporter assay was for verifying the interaction between miR-361-5p and protein inhibitor of activated STAT 1 (PIAS1). miR-361-5p displayed a decreased level in the testes of LOH mice. Overexpressing miR-361-5p attenuated Leydig cell loss in the testis and elevated serum and intratesticular testosterone levels in LOH mice. H2O2 stimulation impaired TM3 cell viability, proliferation and intracellular testosterone production and enhanced cell apoptosis. miR-361-5p targeted PIAS1 in TM3 cell. PIAS1 upregulation counteracted miR-361-5p overexpression-mediated alleviation of cell apoptosis and elevation of testosterone synthesis in H2O2-stimualetd TM3 cells. miR-361-5p ameliorates LOH progression by increasing testosterone production and alleviate Leydig cell apoptosis via downregulation of PIAS1.

ABSTRACT

Controllable droplet manipulation has diverse applications; however, limited methods exist for externally manipulating droplets in confined spaces. Herein, we propose a portable triboelectric electrostatic tweezer (TET) by integrating electrostatic forces with a superhydrophobic surface that can even manipulate droplets in an enclosed space. Electrostatic induction causes the droplet to be subjected to an electrostatic force in an electrostatic field so that the droplet can be moved freely with the TET on a superhydrophobic platform. Characterized by its high precision, flexibility, and robust binding strength, TET can manipulate droplets under various conditions and achieve a wide range of representative fluid applications such as droplet microreactors, precise self-cleaning, cargo transportation, the targeted delivery of chemicals, liquid sorting, soft droplet robotics, and cell labeling. Specifically, TET demonstrated the ability to manipulate internal droplets from the outside of a closed system, such as performing cell labeling experiments within a sealed Petri dish without opening the culture system.
