ABSTRACT

Noise produced by scientific equipment during fisheries surveys is largely unstudied, though these sound sources may have an effect on the organisms of interest and on their resultant stock assessments. This paper describes acoustic signatures of two underwater mobile vehicles and accompanying research ships used to survey demersal fishes, and discusses the acoustic contributions of the survey equipment to rockfish habitat. Increases in noise over ambient levels were high, but the majority of sound energy was generated by communication and navigation instrumentation on the ships and survey vehicles, and was out of the expected sensitivity range for fish hearing.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to assess the incidence of diagnosed sinusitis and the effect of diagnosis and treatment on the outcome in critically ill burn victims. Chart analysis of 84 consecutive burn victims requiring mechanical ventilation for greater than 7 days was performed. Sinusitis was diagnosed in 13/84 patients (15%). There was no difference in age or total body surface area burned, or the incidence of inhalation injury, ARDS, pneumonia and sepsis (P>0.05). Co-morbid disease was similar in both the groups. The number of ventilator-dependent days and hospital length of stay were higher in the sinusitis group (P<0.05). The hospital mortality in those diagnosed and treated for sinusitis was 23% (3/13) as opposed to 48% (34/71) in those not diagnosed with sinusitis (P<0.05). Increased number of ventilator-dependent days and longer hospital stay are associated with the diagnosis of sinusitis. Our findings suggest an improved survival in those diagnosed and treated for sinusitis.

ABSTRACT

The authors discuss the ethical considerations involved in using psychotropic medications with incarcerated offenders. Medications cannot be used as tool of oppression. Medication cannot be used to justify overpopulation, to quietly terminate prisoners, and must be administered by licensed health professionals. There must be informed consent.

ABSTRACT

A 24-year-old man, who was late attaining developmental milestones and tested in the severely mentally retarded range, had incurred third- and fourth-degree burns at 2.5 years that resulted in a deformed, anesthetic, and useless distal left upper limb. Following wrist disarticulation, he was fitted with a cosmetic prosthesis that he accepted enthusiastically. It permitted him to use his left upper limb as an effective assister. Attempts to wear and use a functional prosthesis were not successful because the bulbous stump was covered with abnormal skin that ulcerated whenever he wore the prosthesis. At present, he resides at home with his mother and has all self-care skills. He attends a day treatment program and helps his mother with household chores as well as neighborhood errands. The prognosis for continued functional improvement is good, even though he remains severely mentally retarded.
