ABSTRACT

By primarily adjusting the reagent amounts, particularly the volume of AgNO3 solution introduced, Ag2O cubes with decreasing sizes from 440 to 79 nm, octahedra from 714 to 106 nm, and rhombic dodecahedra from 644 to 168 nm are synthesized. 733 nm cuboctahedra are also prepared for structural analysis. With in-house X-ray diffraction (XRD) peak calibration, shape-related peak shifts are recognizable. Synchrotron XRD measurements at 100 K reveal the presence of bulk and surface layer lattices. Bulk cell constants also deviate slightly. They show a negative thermal expansion behavior with shrinking cell constants at higher temperatures. The Ag2O crystals exhibit size- and facet-dependent optical properties. Bandgaps red-shift continuously with increasing particle sizes. Optical facet effect is also observable. Moreover, synchrotron XRD peaks of a mixture of Cu2O rhombicuboctahedra and edge- and corner-truncated cubes exposing all three crystal faces can be deconvoluted into three components with the bulk and the [111] microstrain phase as the major component. Interestingly, while the unheated Cu2O sample shows clear diffraction peak asymmetry, annealing the sample to 450 K yields nearly symmetric peaks even when returning the sample to room temperature, meaning even moderately high temperatures can permanently change the crystal lattice.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Ever since the use of bisphenol A (BPA) has been restricted, concerns have been raised regarding the use of its substitutes, such as bisphenol S (BPS) and bisphenol F (BPF). Meanwhile, the EU European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) issued the new tolerable daily intake (TDI) after the latest re-risk assessment for BPA, which enforced the need for cumulative risk assessment in the population. This study was conducted to identify BPA and its substitute's exposure characteristics of the general Taiwanese population and estimate the cumulative risk of bisphenol exposure. Methods: Urine samples (N = 366 [adult, 271; minor, 95]) were collected from individuals who participated in the Taiwan Environmental Survey for Toxicants 2013. The samples were analyzed for BPA, BPS, and BPF through ultraperformance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Daily intake (DI) levels were calculated for each bisphenol. Hazard quotients (HQs) were calculated with the consideration of tolerable DI and a reference dose. Additionally, hazard index (HI; sum of HQs for each bisphenol) values were calculated. Results: Our study found that the median level of BPA was significantly higher in adults (9.63 µg/g creatinine) than in minors (6.63 µg/g creatinine) (p < 0.001). The DI of BPS was higher in female (0.69 ng/kg/day) than in male (0.49 ng/kg/day); however, the DIs of BPF and BPS were higher in boys (1.15 and 0.26 ng/kg/day, respectively) than in girls (0.57 and 0.20 ng/kg/day, respectively). Most HI values exceeded 1 (99% of the participants) after EFSA re-establish the TDI of BPA. Discussion: Our study revealed that the exposure profiles and risk of BPA and its substitute in Taiwanese varied by age and sex. Additionally, the exposure risk of BPA was deemed unacceptable in Taiwan according to new EFSA regulations, and food contamination could be the possible source of exposure. We suggest that the risk of exposure to BPA and its substitutes in most human biomonitoring studies should be reassessed based on new scientific evidence.

ABSTRACT

The discharge of heavy metals into the environment has adversely affected the aquatic ecology due to their toxic and non-biodegradation nature. In this research, a three-dimensional graphene oxide/carboxymethylcellulose/aluminium sulphate (GOCAS) aerogel was synthesised and evaluated as a novel means for lead and zinc removal. The GOCAS aerogel was synthesised via ice-templating of graphene oxide with carboxymethylcellulose and aluminium sulphate as the crosslinking and functionalisation additives. Characterisation of the aerogel by various analytical techniques confirmed the successful integration of the substrates. The hydroxyl and sulphate groups in the aerogel were found to participate in the adsorption of both metals. The equilibrium of lead adsorption was found to correlate well to the Freundlich isotherm, while zinc adsorption better fitted to the Langmuir isotherm. The adsorption kinetic of both metals was found to be best described by the pseudo-second-order model. The interactive influences of concentration, temperature, contact time and dose on the metal elimination were explored by a central composite design, and the optimum adsorption capacity for lead was found to be 138.7 mg/g at a GOCAS dose of 20 mg, initial concentration of 100 mg/L, temperature of 50 °C and contact time of 45 min. The optimum adsorption capacity for zinc was 52.69 mg/g at 30 mg, 65 mg/L, 45 °C and 40 min. Furthermore, regeneration studies with hydrochloric acid eluant were successfully conducted for up to four adsorption-desorption cycles. Overall, this work demonstrates that GOCAS aerogel is a viable nanosorbent for the adsorption of lead and zinc from water systems.

ABSTRACT

In chronic kidney disease (CKD), renal fibrosis is an unavoidable result of various manifestations. However, its pathogenesis is not yet fully understood. Here, we revealed the novel role of Homeobox D10 (HOXD10) in CKD-related fibrosis. HOXD10 expression was downregulated in CKD-related in vitro and in vivo fibrosis models. UUO model mice were administered adeno-associated virus (AAV) containing HOXD10, and HOXD10 overexpression plasmids were introduced into human proximal tubular epithelial cells induced by TGF-ß1. The levels of iron, reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipid ROS, the oxidized glutathione/total glutathione (GSSG/GSH) ratio, malonaldehyde (MDA), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were determined using respective assay kits. Treatment with AAV-HOXD10 significantly attenuated fibrosis and renal dysfunction in UUO model mice by inhibiting NOX4 transcription, ferroptosis pathway activation, and oxidative stress. High levels of NOX4 transcription, ferroptosis pathway activation and profibrotic gene expression induced by TGF-ß1/erastin (a ferroptosis agonist) were abrogated by HOXD10 overexpression in HK-2 cells. Moreover, bisulfite sequencing PCR result determined that HOXD10 showed a hypermethylated level in TGF-ß1-treated HK-2 cells. The binding of HOXD10 to the NOX4 promoter was confirmed by chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) analysis and dual-luciferase reporter assays. Targeting HOXD10 may represent an innovative therapeutic strategy for fibrosis treatment in CKD.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Human patients often experience an episode of serious seizure activity, such as status epilepticus (SE), prior to the onset of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), suggesting that SE can trigger the development of epilepsy. Yet, the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. The low-density lipoprotein receptor related protein (Lrp4), a receptor for proteoglycan-agrin, has been indicated to modulate seizure susceptibility. However, whether agrin-Lrp4 pathway also plays a role in the development of SE-induced TLE is not clear. METHODS: Lrp4f/f mice were crossed with hGFAP-Cre and Nex-Cre mice to generate brain conditional Lrp4 knockout mice (hGFAP-Lrp4-/-) and pyramidal neuron specific knockout mice (Nex-Lrp4-/-). Lrp4 was specifically knocked down in hippocampal astrocytes by injecting AAV virus carrying hGFAP-Cre into the hippocampus. The effects of agrin-Lrp4 pathway on the development of SE-induced TLE were evaluated on the chronic seizure model generated by injecting kainic acid (KA) into the amygdala. The spontaneous recurrent seizures (SRS) in mice were video monitored. RESULTS: We found that Lrp4 deletion from the brain but not from the pyramidal neurons elevated the seizure threshold and reduced SRS numbers, with no change in the stage or duration of SRS. More importantly, knockdown of Lrp4 in the hippocampal astrocytes after SE induction decreased SRS numbers. In accord, direct injection of agrin into the lateral ventricle of control mice but not mice with Lrp4 deletion in hippocampal astrocytes also increased the SRS numbers. These results indicate a promoting effect of agrin-Lrp4 signaling in hippocampal astrocytes on the development of SE-induced TLE. Last, we observed that knockdown of Lrp4 in hippocampal astrocytes increased the extracellular adenosine levels in the hippocampus 2 weeks after SE induction. Blockade of adenosine A1 receptor in the hippocampus by DPCPX after SE induction diminished the effects of Lrp4 on the development of SE-induced TLE. CONCLUSION: These results demonstrate a promoting role of agrin-Lrp4 signaling in hippocampal astrocytes in the development of SE-induced development of epilepsy through elevating adenosine levels. Targeting agrin-Lrp4 signaling may serve as a potential therapeutic intervention strategy to treat TLE.

Epidemiological evidence showed that serum high perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) levels are associated with multiple eye related diseases, but the potential underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. Zebrafish and photoreceptor cell (661w) models were used to investigate the molecular mechanism of PFOS induced eye development defects. Our results showed a novel molecular mechanism of PFOS-induced inflammation response-mediated photoreceptor cell death associated with eye development defects. Inhibition of Caspase-8 activation significantly decreased photoreceptor cell death in PFOS exposure. Mechanistically, Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) mediates activation of Caspase-8 promote activation of NLR family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome to elicit maturation of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1ß) via Caspase-1 activation, facilitating photoreceptor cell inflammation damage in PFOS exposure. In addition, we also made a novel finding that Caspase-3 activation was increased via Caspase-8 activation and directly intensified cell death. Our results show the important role of Caspase-8 activation in PFOS induced eye development defects and highlight Caspase-8 mediated activation of the NLRP3 inflammation triggers activation of Caspase-1 and promote the maturation of IL-1ß in retinal inflammatory injury.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, there has been a growing demand for drug design approaches that incorporate a higher number of sp3-hybridized carbons, necessitating the development of innovative cross-coupling strategies to reliably introduce aliphatic fragments. Here, we present a powerful approach for the light-mediated B-alkyl Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling between alkyl boranes and aryl bromides. Alkyl boranes were easily generated via hydroboration from readily available alkenes, exhibiting excellent regioselectivity and enabling the selective transfer of a diverse range of primary alkyl fragments onto the arene ring under photocatalytic conditions. This methodology eliminates the need for expensive catalytic systems and sensitive organometallic compounds, operating efficiently at room temperature within just 30 min. We further demonstrate the translation of the present protocol to continuous-flow conditions, enhancing scalability, safety, and overall efficiency of the method. This versatile approach offers significant potential for accelerating drug discovery efforts by enabling the introduction of complex aliphatic fragments in a straightforward and reliable manner.

Growing evidence has demonstrated that gut microbiota could be developed as a therapeutic target due to its contribution to microglia activation in the pathological process of ischemic stroke. Acorus tatarinowii oils (AT oils), which is considered as the active fraction of a traditional Chinese herbal medicine Acorus tatarinowii, exerts various bioactivities and prebiotic effects. However, it remains unclear that the effect of AT oils on inflammatory response after ischemic stroke and whether its underlying mechanism is associated to gut microbiota and the intestinal barrier. In the current study, we aim to investigate the anti-microglial neuroinflammation mechanism of AT oils in a middle cerebral artery occlusion model of ischemic stroke. The compositions of AT oils were identified by GC-MS. Our results demonstrated that AT oils could effectively relieve cerebral infarction, inhibit neuronal apoptosis, degrade the release of pro-inflammatory factors (TNF-α, IL-17, IL-6 and IFN-γ), and mediate the polarization of microglia. Moreover, AT oils restored the composition and the balance of gut microbiota in stroke rats, and reduced abundance of opportunistic genera including Verrucomicrobia, Akkermansia and Tenericutes, as well as increased beneficial bacteria abundance such as Tenericutes and Prevotella_copri. To investigate the role of gut microbiota on AT oils against ischemic stroke, we conducted the fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) experiments with gut microbiota consumption, which suggested that the depletion of gut microbiota took away the protective effect of AT oils, confirming the importance of gut microbiota in the protective effect of AT oils on ischemic stroke. FMT experiments have demonstrated that AT oils preserved the gut permeability and blood-brain barrier, as well as mediated the microglial phenotype under the intervention of gut microbiota. In summary, AT oils could efficaciously moderate neuronal damage and intervene microglial phenotype by reversing gut microbiota disorder in ischemic stroke rats.

Aconitum coreanum (A. coreanum), a traditional Chinese medicine, has been proved to treat ischemic stroke (IS). However, the mechanisms of A. coreanum's anti-stroke is currently unknown. This study aimed to uncover the effect and mechanisms of A. coreanum. And study raw Aconitum coreanum (RA) and steamed Aconitum coreanum (SA) and Aconitum coreanum processed with ginger and Alumen (GA) on the mechanism of the pharmacological action of treating IS. Determining whether the efficacy is affected after processing. The right unilateral ligation of the carotid artery of gerbils was used to mimic IS. The neurological function score, infarct volume, oxidative stress level and inflammatory factor expression were measured in gerbils after IS. Western blot and immunofluorescence analyses were conducted to evaluate the expression of related proteins. Metabolomic analyzes IS-related metabolic pathways in urinary metabolites. RA, SA and GA significantly improved the infarct volume and behavioral score of IS gerbils, increased the expression of brain tissue superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), nitric oxide (NO) and decreased the content of malondialdehyde (MDA), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). Western blot and immunofluorescence analysis results showed that RA, SA and GA significantly increased the expression of P-Akt, PI3K, HO-1 and KEAP1. Metabolomic studies identified 112 differential metabolites, including L-Proline, Riboflavin, Leukotriene D4, and 7-Methylxanthine, as potential biomarkers of stroke, involving 14 metabolic pathways including riboflavin metabolism, pyrimidine metabolism, and purine metabolism. Our findings indicated that A. coreanum protected against cerebral ischemia injury probably via the PI3K/Akt and KEAP1/NRF2 pathway. A. coreanum before and after processing both had a protective effect against IS brain injury in gerbils. The A. coreanum efficacy was not reduced after processing. Even compared to RA, SA had better efficacy.

ABSTRACT

MOTIVATION: Systems biology aims to better understand living systems through mathematical modelling of experimental and clinical data. A pervasive challenge in quantitative dynamical modelling is the integration of time series measurements, which often have high variability and low sampling resolution. Approaches are required to utilize such information while consistently handling uncertainties. RESULTS: We present BayModTS (Bayesian modelling of time series data), a new FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable) workflow for processing and analysing sparse and highly variable time series data. BayModTS consistently transfers uncertainties from data to model predictions, including process knowledge via parameterized models. Further, credible differences in the dynamics of different conditions can be identified by filtering noise. To demonstrate the power and versatility of BayModTS, we applied it to three hepatic datasets gathered from three different species and with different measurement techniques: (i) blood perfusion measurements by magnetic resonance imaging in rat livers after portal vein ligation, (ii) pharmacokinetic time series of different drugs in normal and steatotic mice, and (iii) CT-based volumetric assessment of human liver remnants after clinical liver resection. AVAILABILITY AND IMPLEMENTATION: The BayModTS codebase is available on GitHub at https://github.com/Systems-Theory-in-Systems-Biology/BayModTS. The repository contains a Python script for the executable BayModTS workflow and a widely applicable SBML (systems biology markup language) model for retarded transient functions. ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The study investigated whether percutaneous partial pressure of oxygen (PtcO2), percutaneous partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PtcCO2), and the derived tissue perfusion index (TPI) can predict the severity and short-term outcomes of severe and critical COVID-19. DESIGN: Prospective observational study conducted from January 1, 2023 to February 10, 2023. SETTING: A teaching hospital specializing in tertiary care in Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province, China. PARTICIPANTS: Adults (≥18 years) with severe and critical COVID-19. INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The general information and vital signs of the patients were collected. The PtcO2 and PtcCO2 were monitored in the left dorsal volar. The ratio of TPI was defined as the ratio of PtcO2/fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) to PtcCO2. Mortality at 28 was recorded. The ability of the TPI to assess disease severity and predict prognosis was determined. ENDPOINT: Severity of the disease on the enrollment and mortality at 28. RESULTS: A total of 71 patients with severe and critical COVID-19, including 40 severe and 31 critical cases, according to the COVID-19 treatment guidelines published by WHO, were recruited. Their median age was 70 years, with 56 (79%) males. The median SpO2/FiO2, PtcO2, PtcCO2, PtcO2/ FiO2, and TPI values were 237, 61, 42, 143, and 3.6 mm Hg, respectively. Compared with those for severe COVID-19, the TPI, PtcO2/ FiO2, SpO2/FiO2, and PtcO2 were significantly lower in critical COVID-19, while the PtcCO2 was significantly higher. After 28 days, 26 (37%) patients had died. TPI values < 3.5 were correlated with more severe disease status (AUC 0.914; 95% CI: 0.847-0.981, P < 0.001), and TPI < 3.3 was associated with poor outcomes (AUC 0.937; 95% CI 0.880-0.994, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The tissue perfusion index (TPI), PtcCO2, and PtcO2/ FiO2 can predict the severity and outcome of severe and critical COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

The annual increase in myopia prevalence poses a significant economic and health challenge. Our study investigated the effect of calcitriol role in myopia by inducing the condition in guinea pigs through form deprivation for four weeks. Untargeted metabolomics methods were used to analyze the differences in metabolites in the vitreous body, and the expression of vitamin D receptor (VDR) in the retina was detected. Following form deprivation, the guinea pigs received intraperitoneal injections of calcitriol at different concentrations. We assessed myopia progression using diopter measurements and biometric analysis after four weeks. Results indicated that form deprivation led to a pronounced shift towards myopia, characterized by reduced choroidal and scleral thickness, disorganized collagen fibers, and decreased scleral collagen fiber diameter. Notably, a reduction in calcitriol expression in vitreous body, diminished vitamin D and calcitriol levels in the blood, and decreased VDR protein expression in retinal tissues were observed in myopic guinea pigs. Calcitriol administration effectively slowed myopia progression, preserved choroidal and scleral thickness, and prevented the reduction of scleral collagen fiber diameter. Our findings highlight a significant decrease in calcitriol and VDR expressions in myopic guinea pigs and demonstrate that exogenous calcitriol supplementation can halt myopia development, enhancing choroidal and scleral thickness and scleral collagen fiber diameter.

Lung cancer is the main cause of cancer deaths around the world. Nitrosamine 4-(methyl nitrosamine)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) is a tobacco-specific carcinogen of lung cancer. Abundant evidence implicates long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in tumorigenesis. Yet, the effects and mechanisms of lncRNAs in NNK-induced carcinogenesis are still unclear. In this study, we discovered that NNK-induced transformed Beas-2B cells (Beas-2B-NNK) showed increased cell migration and proliferation while decreasing rates of apoptosis. RNA sequencing and differentially expressed lncRNAs analyses showed that lncRNA PSMB8-AS1 was obviously upregulated. Interestingly, silencing the lncRNA PSMB8-AS1 in Beas-2B-NNK cells reduced cell proliferation and migration and produced cell cycle arrest in the G2/M phase along with a decrease in CDK1 expression. Conclusively, our results demonstrate that lncRNA PSMB8-AS1 could promote the malignant characteristics of Beas-2B-NNK cells by regulating CDK1 and affecting the cell cycle, suggesting that it may supply a new prospective epigenetic mechanism for lung cancer.

Antibiotic resistance is a global health crisis. Notably, carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) pose a significant clinical challenge due to the limited effective treatment options. This problem is exacerbated by persisters that develop upon antibiotic exposure. Bacteria persisters can tolerate high antibiotic doses and can cause recalcitrant infections, potentially developing further antibiotic resistance. Iron is a critical micronutrient for survival. We aimed to evaluate the utility of iron chelators, alone and in combination with antibiotics, in managing persisters. We hypothesized that iron chelators eradicate CRE persisters in vitro, when administered in combination with antibiotics. Our screening revealed three clinical isolates with bacteria persisters that resuscitated upon antibiotic removal. These isolates were treated with both meropenem and an iron chelator (deferoxamine mesylate, deferiprone or dexrazoxane) over 24 h. Against our hypothesis, bacteria persisters survived and resuscitated upon withdrawing both the antibiotic and iron chelator. Pursuing our aim, we next hypothesized that iron chelation is feasible as a post-antibiotic treatment in managing and suppressing persisters' resuscitation. We exposed bacteria persisters to an iron chelator without antibiotics. Flow cytometric assessments revealed that iron chelators are inconsistent in suppressing persister resuscitation. Collectively, these results suggest that the iron chelation strategy may not be useful as an antibiotic adjunct to target planktonic bacteria persisters.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To establish thresholds in the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) pain interference, physical function, fatigue, and depression scores on the basis of their association with subsequent use of the emergency department (ED) or urgent care by people diagnosed with cancer. METHODS: Retrospective data from 952 people seen at Henry Ford Cancer and insured through the Health Alliance Plan were analyzed using generalized linear mixed-effects models. The log odds of ED or urgent care use during 14 or 30 days after each patient-reported outcome (PRO) assessment were related to PRO scores, while adjusting for comorbidity, sociodemographic, and tumor characteristics. RESULTS: Pain interference and physical function were associated with subsequent ED or urgent care visits, but fatigue and depression were not, and the results for 14- and 30-day visits were similar. Thresholds anchored in the likelihood of these visits differed according to cancer stage. For people with advanced cancer, a pain interference score of 60 or higher (odds ratio [OR] 3.75, [95% CI, 1.53 to 7.87]) and a physical function score lower than 40 (OR 2.94, [95% CI, 1.22 to 7.06]) produced the largest ORs with narrowest CIs for 30-day visits. For people with nonadvanced cancer, the thresholds of 65 for pain interference (OR 2.64, [95% CI, 1.40 to 5.01]) and 35 for physical function (OR 1.87, [95% CI, 1.01 to 3.45]) produced largest ORs with narrowest CIs for 30-day visits. CONCLUSION: These anchor-based thresholds in PROMIS scores can inform clinicians' actions with the goal of preventing ED or urgent care visits.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have reported a potential relationship between depressive disorder (DD), immune function, and inflammatory response. Some studies have also confirmed the correlation between immune and inflammatory responses and Bell's palsy. Considering that the pathophysiology of these two diseases has several similarities, this study investigates if DD raises the risk of developing Bell's palsy. METHODS: This nationwide propensity score-weighting cohort study utilized Taiwan National Health Insurance data. 44,198 patients with DD were identified as the DD cohort and 1,433,650 adult subjects without DD were identified as the comparison cohort. The inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) strategy was used to balance the differences of covariates between two groups. The 5-year incidence of Bell's palsy was evaluated using the Cox proportional-hazard model, presenting results in terms of hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: The average age of DD patients was 48.3 ± 17.3 years, and 61.86% were female. After propensity score-weighting strategy, no significant demographic differences emerged between the DD and comparison cohort. The Cox proportional hazards model revealed a statistically significant adjusted IPTW-HR of 1.315 (95% CI: 1.168-1.481) for Bell's palsy in DD patients compared to comparison subjects. Further independent factors for Bell's palsy in this model were age (IPTW-HR: 1.012, 95% CI: 1.010-1.013, p < 0.0001), sex (IPTW-HR: 0.909, 95% CI: 0.869-0.952, p < 0.0001), hypertension (IPTW-HR: 1.268, 95% CI: 1.186-1.355, p < 0.0001), hyperlipidemia (IPTW-HR: 1.084, 95% CI: 1.001-1.173, p = 0.047), and diabetes (IPTW-HR: 1.513, 95% CI: 1.398-1.637, p < 0.0001) CONCLUSION: This Study confirmed that individuals with DD face an elevated risk of developing Bell's palsy. These findings hold significant implications for both clinicians and researchers, shedding light on the potential interplay between mental health and the risk of certain physical health outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Contaminants may induce immune response polarization, leading to immune diseases, such as allergic diseases. Evidence concerning the effects of chlorinated paraffins (CPs), an emerging persistent organic pollutant, on immune system is scarce, particularly for epidemiological evidence. This study explores the association between CPs exposure and allergic diseases (allergic rhinitis, atopic eczema, and allergic conjunctivitis) in children and adolescents in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) in China. Herein, 131,304 children and adolescents from primary and secondary schools in the PRD were included and completed the questionnaire survey. The particulate matter (PM) samples were collected in the PRD and the PM2.5-bound CP concentrations were analyzed. In the multivarious adjustment mixed effect model (MEM), an IQR increase in ∑CPs was significantly associated with allergic diseases (rhinitis, eczema, and conjunctivitis) with the estimated odds ratios (ORs) for 1.11 (95% CI: 1.10, 1.13), 1.17 (95% CI: 1.15, 1.19), and 1.82 (95% CI: 1.76, 1.88), respectively. Interaction analysis indicated that overweight and obese individuals might have greater risk. Similar effect estimates were observed in several sensitivity analyses. This study provided epidemiological evidence on the immunotoxicity of CPs. More studies to confirm our findings and investigate mechanisms are needed.

ABSTRACT

Designing nanocomposite hydrogels with oriented nanosheets has emerged as a promising toolkit to achieve preferential performances that go beyond their disordered counterparts. Although current fabrication strategies via electric/magnetic force fields have made remarkable achievements, they necessitate special properties of nanosheets and suffer from an inferior orientation degree of nanosheets. Herein, a facile and universal approach is discovered to elaborate MXene-based nanocomposite hydrogels with highly oriented, heterogeneous architecture by virtue of supergravity to replace conventional force fields. The key to such architecture is to leverage bidirectional, force-tunable attributes of supergravity containing coupled orthogonal shear and centrifugal force field for steering high-efficient movement, pre-orientation, and stacking of MXene nanosheets in the bottom. Such a synergetic effect allows for yielding heterogeneous nanocomposite hydrogels with a high-orientation MXene-rich layer (orientation degree, f = 0.83) and a polymer-rich layer. The authors demonstrate that MXene-based nanocomposite hydrogels leverage their high-orientation, heterogeneous architecture to deliver an extraordinary electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness of 55.2 dB at 12.4 GHz yet using a super-low MXene of 0.3 wt%, surpassing most hydrogels-based electromagnetic shielding materials. This versatile supergravity-steered strategy can be further extended to arbitrary nanosheets including MoS2, GO, and C3N4, offering a paradigm in the development of oriented nanocomposites.
