ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a relatively common chronic immune-pathological and inflammatory disease and potentially oral precancerous lesion. Erosive OLP patients show the higher rate of malignant transformation than patients with non-erosive OLP. Identifying the potential biomarkers related to erosive OLP may help to understand the pathogenesis of the diseases. METHODS: Metabolic profiles were compared in control and patient subjects with erosive OLP by using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF-MS) coupled with pattern recognition methods An integrative analysis was used to identify the perturbed metabolic pathways and pathological processes that may be associated with the disease. RESULTS: In total, 12 modulated metabolites were identified and considered as the potential biomarkers of erosive OLP. Multiple metabolic pathways and pathological processes were involved in erosive OLP. CONCLUSION: The dysregulations of these metabolites could be used to explain the pathogenesis of the disease, which could also be the potential therapeutic targets for the disease.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To study the optimal waist circumference (WC) cut-off values for identifying metabolic risk factors in middle-aged and elderly subjects in Shandong Province of China. METHODS: A total of 2,873 men and 5,559 women were included in this cross-sectional study. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) was diagnosed according to the definition of Chinese Diabetes Society in 2004. The relation between WC and MetS was analyzed by multivariate logistic regression analysis. The optimal WC cut-off values were identified using the area under the ROC curve and the different diagnostic criteria for central obesity were compared. RESULTS: The WC was the risk factor for MetS independent of BMI, blood glucose, blood lipid, and blood pressure. The optimal WC cut-off value was 83.8 cm and 91.1 cm for identifying MetS in women and men, respectively. Compared with 80 cm and 85 cm for women and men, 85 cm and 90 cm had a higher Youden index for identifying all metabolic risk factors and MetS in women and men. CONCLUSION: The appropriate WC cut-off value is 85 cm and 90 cm for identifying central obesity and MetS in women and men in Shandong Province of China.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To compare therapeutic effects of acupuncture and routine western medicine is an recurrent oral ulcer of the type of accumulation of heat in the heart and spleen. METHODS: Seventy-four cases were randomly divided into 2 groups. The acupuncture group of 37 cases were treated with acupuncture at Tongli (HT 5), Gongsun (SP 4), Neiting (ST 44), Hegu (11 4), etc. The control group of 37 cases were treated with VitB2 , VitC. Their therapeutic effects were compared. RESULTS: The total effective rate was 83.8% in the treatment group and 48.6% in the control group with a very significant difference between the two groups (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: The therapeutic effect of acupuncture is significantly better than that of the control group, and acupuncture is an effective therapy for recurrent oral ulcer of type of accumulation of heat in the heart and spleen.
