ABSTRACT

The development of multifunctional coatings is a trend. Here, a conductive and superhydrophobic coating with nest-like structure was prepared on the wood or polyurethane (PU) sponge by spraying or soaking methods. The coating contains lignin and carboxylated multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) as the main materials, both methyl trimethoxysilane (MTMS) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as the modifiers. And benefiting from the protective effect of the nest-like structure, the coating exhibits excellent abrasion resistance (withstanding 43 abrasion cycles), stability, and UV resistance (little change in water contact angle after 240 h of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation) by optimizing the proportions. Additionally, the coating provides eminent deicing (complete removal after 142.7 s) and self-cleaning on the wood, as well as the superior sensing performance and oil absorption (15.0-49.6 g/g for various oils) on the PU sponge. When assembled into compressible piezoresistive sensor, it could clearly sense the signals of rapid, short, circulation, different speed and deformation, possessing a prosperous wearable device prospect. It is envisaged that the coating supplies a new platform for superhydrophobicity, wearable electronics and oil absorption.

ABSTRACT

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) can adversely affect surgical outcomes, and the impact on revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) outcomes is unclear. This study aimed to explore the impact of SLE on in-patient outcomes of revision TKA. The Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) database from 2005 to 2018 was searched for patients aged ≥ 18 years old who received revision TKA. Patients with and without SLE were propensity score matched (PSM) at a 1:4 ratio. Associations between SLE and in-hospital outcomes were examined using regression analyses. The study included 133,054 patients, with 794 having SLE. After 1:4 PSM, data of 3,970 patients were analyzed (SLE, 794; non-SLE, 3,176). Multivariate-adjusted analyses revealed that SLE patients had a significantly higher risk of postoperative complications (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.23, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.05-1.44, p = 0.011), non-routine discharge (aOR = 1.22, 95% CI: 1.02-1.46, p = 0.028), major blood loss (aOR = 1.19), respiratory failure/mechanical ventilation (aOR = 1.79), acute kidney injury (AKI) (aOR = 1.47), and wound dehiscence (aOR = 2.09). SLE patients also had a longer length of hospital stay (aBeta = 0.31) and greater total hospital costs (aBeta = 6.35) compared to non-SLE patients. Among those with aseptic failure, SLE patients had a significantly higher risk of postoperative complications (aOR = 1.23) and non-routine discharge (aOR = 1.36). SLE is independently associated with worse in-hospital outcomes in patients undergoing revision TKA. This study highlights the importance of heightened vigilance and tailored perioperative management for patients undergoing major surgeries in the background of SLE. Key Points • SLE significantly increases the risk of non-routine discharge, major blood loss, respiratory failure, acute kidney injury, and wound dehiscence, in patients undergoing aseptic and septic revision TKA. • Patients with SLE experience longer hospital stays and higher hospital costs compared to those without SLE. • The study's findings highlight the necessity for healthcare providers to consider the presence of SLE as a critical factor in preoperative planning and postoperative care to improve outcomes in revision TKA patients.

ABSTRACT

The development of eco-friendly, mechanically stable, and biocompatible materials for medical packaging has gained significant attention in recent years. Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) have emerged as a promising nanomaterial due to their unique tubular structure, high aspect ratio, and biocompatibility. We aim to develop a novel soybean oil-based thermoset bio-resin incorporating HNTs and to characterize its physical and functional properties for medical packaging. Soybean oil was epoxidized using an eco-friendly method and used as a precursor for preparing the thermoset resin (ESOR). Different amounts of HNTs (0.25, 0.50, and 1.0 wt.%) were used to prepare the ESOR/HNTs blends. Various characteristics such as transparency, tensile strength, thermal resistance, and water absorption were investigated. While incorporating HNTs improved the tensile strength and thermal properties of the ESOR, it noticeably reduced its transparency at the 1.0 wt.% level. Therefore, HNTs were modified using sodium hydroxide and (3-Aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) and ESOR/HNTs blends were made using 1.0 wt.% of modified HNTs. It was shown that modifying HNTs using NaOH improved the transparency and mechanical properties of prepared blends compared to those with the same amount of unmodified HNTs. However, modifying using (3-Aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) decreased the transparency but improved the water absorption of prepared resins. This study provides valuable insights into the design of HNT-based ESOR blends as a sustainable material for medical packaging, contributing to the advancement of eco-friendly packaging solutions in the healthcare industry.

ABSTRACT

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common degenerative disease of the joint with irreversible cartilage damage as the main pathological feature. With the development of regenerative medicine, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been found to have strong therapeutic potential. However, intraarticular MSCs injection therapy is limited by economic costs and ethics. Exosomes derived from MSC (MSC-Exos), as the important intercellular communication mode of MSCs, contain nucleic acid, proteins, lipids, microRNAs, and other biologically active substances. With excellent editability and specificity, MSC-Exos function as a targeted delivery system for OA treatment, modulating immunity, inhibiting apoptosis, and promoting regeneration. This article reviews the mechanism of action of MSC-Exos in the treatment of osteoarthritis, the current research status of the preparation of MSC-Exos and its application of drug delivery in OA therapy.

ABSTRACT

To develop a highly efficient adsorbent to remediate and remove hexavalent chromium ions (Cr(VI)) from polluted water, cellulose acetate (CA) and chitosan (CS), along with metal oxides (titanium dioxide (TiO2) and ferroferric oxide (Fe3O4)), and a zirconium-based metal-organic framework (UiO-66) were used to fabricate the composite porous nanofiber membranes through electrospinning. The adsorption performance, influencing factors, adsorption kinetics and isotherms of composite nanofiber membranes were comprehensively investigated. The multi-layer membrane with interpenetrating nanofibers and surface functional groups enhanced the natural physical adsorption and provided potential chemical sites. The thermal stability was improved by introducing TiO2 and UiO-66. CA/CS/UiO-66 exhibited the highest adsorption capacity (118.81 mg g-1) and removal rate (60.76%), which were twice higher than those of the control. The correlation coefficients (R2) of all the composite nanofibers regressed by the Langmuir model were significantly higher than those by the Freundlich model. The pseudo-first-order kinetic curve of CA/CS composite nanofibers showed the highest R2 (0.973), demonstrating that the whole adsorption process involved a combination of strong physical adsorption and weak chemical adsorption by the amino groups of CS. However, the R2 values of the pseudo-second-order kinetic model increased after incorporating TiO2, Fe3O4, and UiO-66 into the CA/CS composite nanofiber membranes since an enhanced chemical reaction with Cr (VI) occured during the adsorption.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Whether the application of MBP plus cannulated screws works for old femoral neck fractures (OFNF) is unknown. The purpose of this study is to present a case series of OFNF in young adults using calcar buttress plate and three cannulated screws with autologous iliac bone grafts. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of eleven young patients (6 males and 5 females) with femoral neck fractures who were treated with open reduction and internal fixation at a single center between 2013 and 2021. The subjects had trauma-to-surgery intervals longer than 3weeks and all were fixed with a calcar buttress plate combined with three cannulated screws, which were supplemented by autologous iliac bone grafts. RESULTS: All eleven cases achieved radiological union under the surgery technique, which occurred on average at 4.46±1.29months after surgery. Complications included femoral neck shortening in all cases, heterotopic ossification in three cases, and osteonecrosis of the femoral head in two cases. One patient with osteonecrosis of the femoral head received total hip arthroplasty. In follow-ups of 24-52months, the median Harris hip score was 81.64±15.39. CONCLUSIONS: The medial buttress plate in combination with three cannulated screws and iliac autograft may be a good choice for treating old femoral neck fractures in young adults.
