ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC), the second most prevalent thyroid cancer after papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), tends to metastasize distantly, leading to poorer outcomes. Despite substantial research, a holistic bibliometric analysis of FTC literature is lacking. This study aims to fill this gap by employing bibliometric methods to track FTC research evolution. METHODS: English FTC publications were systematically gathered from the Web of Science. Bibliometric analysis, using R, VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and Excel, synthesized data and explored global research trends and topics. RESULTS: From 2000 to 2023, 9086 authors from 1953 institutions across 75 countries contributed to 1776 papers in 491 academic journals on FTC. The last two decades have witnessed a steady increase in publications related to FTC, with the United States leading in terms of publication volume. The United States dominated both in publications and citations, with the National Cancer Institute and Sheue-Yann Cheng as leading contributors. The journal 'Thyroid' featured the most publications, while the 'Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism' ranked highest in citation frequency. Research focused on gene expression analysis and preoperative diagnostics, with recent trends shifting toward prognosis management and machine learning due to advances in medical technology and increased health awareness. CONCLUSION: This comprehensive bibliometric analysis has mapped the landscape of FTC research, highlighting key contributors, institutions, and thematic trends. Current discourse predominantly revolves around genetic analysis, prognostic determinants, and preoperative diagnostics in FTC. This foundational work guides future FTC research, providing insights into its evolution.

ABSTRACT

The colonization of alien plants in new habitats is typically facilitated by microorganisms present in the soil environment. However, the diversity and structure of the archaeal, bacterial, and fungal communities in the latitudinal spread of alien plants remain unclear. In this study, the rhizosphere and bulk soil of Chromolaena odorata were collected from five latitudes in Pu' er city, Yunnan Province, followed by amplicon sequencing of the soil archaeal, bacterial, and fungal communities. Alpha and beta diversity results revealed that the richness indices and the structures of the archaeal, bacterial, and fungal communities significantly differed along the latitudinal gradient. Additionally, significant differences were observed in the bacterial Shannon index, as well as in the structures of the bacterial and fungal communities between the rhizosphere and bulk soils. Due to the small spatial scale, trends of latitudinal variation in the archaeal, bacterial, and fungal communities were not pronounced. Total potassium, total phosphorus, available nitrogen, available potassium and total nitrogen were the important driving factors affecting the soil microbial community structure. Compared with those in bulk soil, co-occurrence networks in rhizosphere microbial networks presented lower complexity but greater modularity and positive connections. Among the main functional fungi, arbuscular mycorrhizae and soil saprotrophs were more abundant in the bulk soil. The significant differences in the soil microbes between rhizosphere and bulk soils further underscore the impact of C. odorata invasion on soil environments. The significant differences in the soil microbiota along latitudinal gradients, along with specific driving factors, demonstrate distinct nutrient preferences among archaea, bacteria, and fungi and indicate complex microbial responses to soil nutrient elements following the invasion of C. odorata.

ABSTRACT

Aim: Build a virtual screening model for ULK1 inhibitors based on artificial intelligence. Materials & methods: Build machine learning and deep learning classification models and combine molecular docking and biological evaluation to screen ULK1 inhibitors from 13 million compounds. And molecular dynamics was used to explore the binding mechanism of active compounds. Results & conclusion: Possibly due to less available training data, machine learning models significantly outperform deep learning models. Among them, the Naive Bayes model has the best performance. Through virtual screening, we obtained three inhibitors with IC50 of µM level and they all bind well to ULK1. This study provides an efficient virtual screening model and three promising compounds for the study of ULK1 inhibitors.

ABSTRACT

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary liver malignancy. Hepatic resection constitutes the major curative treatment option, but a significant proportion of patients are not surgical candidates on initial evaluation. Along with the development of novel therapeutic strategies including targeted therapies and immunotherapies, a few HCCs can achieve tumor downstaging and be curatively resected. A 52-year-old man was diagnosed with HCC with portal vein invasion and extensive pulmonary and lymph node metastasis. Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) in conjunction with donafenib and sintilimab was given. Primary tumors in the liver largely shrank with almost complete elimination of the lung metastases following treatment. The patient subsequently underwent curative surgery for HCC, and the pathological examination revealed complete necrosis of the tumor. Targeted immunotherapy was continued after surgery and no disease progression was found on the latest follow-up. Advanced HCC with distant metastasis might have an excellent response to combination therapy of TACE with tyrosine kinase-targeted inhibitors and PD-1 blocker, and achieve opportunity for curative surgery. This efficacy may be associated with the remodeling of immune microenvironment and angiogenesis. HCC is extremely heterogeneous, and the response to therapeutics varies among patients. There is a lack of useful biomarkers to predict therapeutic efficacy, which needs further studies.

ABSTRACT

Aiming at the further extension of the application scope of traditional molecular muscles, a novel bispyrene-functionalized chiral molecular [c2]daisy chain was designed and synthesized. Taking advantage of the unique dimeric interlocked structure of molecular [c2]daisy chain, the resultant chiral molecular muscle emits strong circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) attributed to the pyrene excimer with a high dissymmetry factor (glum) value of 0.010. More importantly, along with the solvent- or anion- induced motions of the chiral molecular muscle, the precise regulation of the pyrene stacking within its skeleton results in the switching towards either "inversed" state with sign inversion and larger glum values or "down" state with maintained handedness and smaller glum values, making it a novel multistate CPL switch. As the first example of chiral molecular muscle-based CPL switch, this proof-of-concept study not only successfully widens the application scopes of molecular muscles, but also provides a promising platform for the construction of novel smart chiral luminescent materials for practical applications.

ABSTRACT

Investigating the self-sorting behaviour of assemblies with subtle structural differences is a captivating yet challenging endeavour. Herein, we elucidate the unusual self-sorting behaviour of metallacages with subtle structural differences in batch reactors and microdroplets. Narcissistic self-sorting of metallacages has been observed for two ligands with identical sizes, shapes, and symmetries, with only minor differences in the substituted groups. In particular, the self-sorting process in microdroplets occurs within 1 min at room temperature, in stark contrast to batch reactors, which require equilibration for 30 min. To reveal the mechanism of self-sorting and the role of microdroplets, we conducted a series of experiments and theoretical calculations, including competitive self-assembly, cage-to-cage transformation, control experiments involving model metallacages with larger cavities, noncovalent interaction analysis, and root mean square deviation (RMSD) analysis. This research demonstrates an unusual case of self-sorting of very similar assemblies and provides a new strategy for facilitating the self-sorting efficiency of supramolecular systems.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To accurately verify the pathogenicity of variants of uncertain significance (VUS) in MUT and MMACHC genes through mass spectrometry and silico analysis. Methods: This multicenter retrospective study included 35 participating units (ClinicalTrials.gov ID: NCT06183138). A total of 3,071 newborns (within 7 days of birth) were sorted into carrying pathogenic/likely pathogenic (P/LP) variants and carrying VUS, non-variant groups. Differences in metabolites among the groups were calculated using statistical analyses. Changes in conservatism, free energy, and interaction force of MMUT and MMACHC variants were analyzed using silico analysis. Results: The percentage of those carrying VUS cases was 68.15% (659/967). In the MMUT gene variant, we found that C3, C3/C2, and C3/C0 levels in those carrying the P/LP variant group were higher than those in the non-variant group (p < 0.000). The conservative scores of those carrying the P/LP variant group were >7. C3, C3/C0, and C3/C2 values of newborns carrying VUS (c.1159A>C and c.1286A>G) were significantly higher than those of the non-variant group and the remaining VUS newborns (p < 0.005). The conservative scores of c.1159A>C and c.1286A>G calculated by ConSurf analysis were 9 and 7, respectively. Unfortunately, three MMA patients with c.1159A>C died during the neonatal period; their C3, C3/C0, C3/C2, and MMA levels were significantly higher than those of the controls. Conclusion: Common variants of methylmalonic acidemia in the study population were categorized as VUS. In the neonatal period, the metabolic biomarkers of those carrying the P/LP variant group of the MUT gene were significantly higher than those in the non-variant group. If the metabolic biomarkers of those carrying VUS are also significantly increased, combined with silico analysis the VUS may be elevated to a likely pathogenic variant. The results also suggest that mass spectrometry and silico analysis may be feasible screening methods for verifying the pathogenicity of VUS in other inherited metabolic diseases.

BACKGROUND: Data regarding the long-term recurrence in patients with intermediate-risk papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) are limited. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of primary tumor-related risk factors and lymph node (LN)-only risk factors on recurrence-free survival (RFS) in patients with intermediate-risk PTC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with PTC who received initial treatment at our institution between 2010 and 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. A total of 799 intermediate-risk PTC patients were included and further categorized into subgroups according to the different categories of intermediate risk factors. The RFS rates of these subgroups were investigated and compared. RESULTS: Structural recurrence developed in 11 patients (1.4%) of the whole cohort during a median follow-up duration of 96 months. There were no significant differences in RFS between the primary tumor-only risk group and the LN-only risk group, while the combined group of primary tumor risk factors and LN risk factor (metastatic LNs >5) was associated with a worse RFS rate. In the matched-pair analysis, no significant difference in RFS was found between patients who underwent thyroid lobectomy (TL) and those who underwent total thyroidectomy (TT) (6-year RFS: 99.6% vs. 98.8%, P = 0.316) during a median follow-up duration of 100 months. CONCLUSIONS: Intermediate-risk PTC patients who underwent TL had a comparable RFS to those who underwent TT. The combination of primary tumor risk factors and LN risk factor (metastatic LNs >5) may be a useful tool for predicting the risk of long-term structural recurrence in patients with intermediate-risk PTC.

Background: Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is a challenging malignancy. The survival outcome of MTC based on AJCC staging system does not render a discriminant classifier among early stages. Methods: 3601 MTC patients from 2000 to 2018 were identified from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Smooth curve fitting, Cox proportional hazard regression and competing risk analysis were applied. Results: A linear correlation between age and log RR (relative risk of overall death) was detected. Overlaps were observed between K-M curves representing patients aged 45-50, 50-55, and 55-60. The study cohort was divided into 3 subgroups with 2 age cutoffs set at 45 and 60. Each further advanced age cutoff population resulted in a roughly "5%" increase in MTC-specific death risks and an approximately "3 times" increase in non-MTC-specific death risks. Conclusions: The survival outcome disparity across age cutoffs at 45 and 60 for MTC has been well defined.

BACKGROUND: Parathyroid carcinoma (PC) is a rare malignancy, often diagnosed incidentally through postoperative pathological examination. The occurrence of nodular goiter, intrathyroidal parathyroid carcinoma, contralateral parathyroid adenoma (PA), and papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) is extremely uncommon, which prompted us to report our case experience. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 67-year-old male who presented with a cervical mass causing tracheal compression, which prompted him to seek medical advice. Based on preoperative auxiliary examination results from color Doppler ultrasound, SPECT parathyroid imaging, and blood tests, he was initially diagnosed with a suspected parathyroid adenoma and nodular goiter. Excision of the right lobe and isthmus of the thyroid, and left superior parathyroid gland was conducted, which were sent to intraoperative frozen pathological examination. During intraoperative observation, adhesion around the right thyroid lobe was discovered. Consequently, right central area lymph node dissection was performed due to suspicion of an aggressive malignant tumor. Histology and immunohistochemistry analysis revealed incidental intrathyroidal parathyroid carcinoma, contralateral parathyroid adenoma, classical papillary thyroid microcarcinoma, and nodular goiter. CONCLUSION: Parathyroid carcinoma should be highly suspected when extremely high levels of PTH and severe hypercalcemia are present, which cannot be simply explained by a preoperatively localized parathyroid adenoma, especially when suspicious malignant adhesion is found during intraoperative exploration. In cases where multifocal thyroid nodules are associated with increased uptake of 99Tc-sestamibi, the possibility of coexisting carcinomas should be considered, not only for thyroid malignancy but also for the potential presence of intrathyroidal parathyroid carcinoma.

ABSTRACT

Metal oxides possessing a large surface area, pore volume and desirable pore size provide more varieties and active industrial potentials. Nevertheless, it is very challenging to produce crystal metal oxides while keeping satisfactory porosity features, especially for ternary compositions. High temperature is usually needed to produce crystal metal oxides, which readily leads to the collapse of the pore structure. Herein, by employing a 'soft' dispersant agent and a hard silica template, ZrO2, TiO2 and Zr-Ti solid solutions having a tetragonal crystal structure are produced and the silica-leached materials are characterized from macroscopic to atomistic scales. The micron-sized particulate powders are composed of nanoscale 'building blocks', with crystallite sizes between ~8 and 21 nm. These polycrystalline ceramic powders exhibit a high specific surface area (up to ~200 m2·g-1) and pore volume (up to 0.5 cm3·g-1), with a pore size range of ~5-20 nm. Importantly, the Zr/Ti-O-Si-OH chemical bonds exist on the particle surface, with about two-thirds of the surface covered by silica. The hydroxyl groups can further post-graft organic ligands or directly associate with species. Synthesized mesoporous metal oxides are highly homogenous and could potentially be used in various applications because of their tetragonal structure and porosity features.

ABSTRACT

The devastating COVID-19 pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has made society acutely aware of the urgency in developing effective techniques to timely monitor the outbreak of previously unknown viral species as well as their mutants, which could be even more lethal and/or contagious. Here, we report a fluorogenic sensor array consisting of peptides truncated from the binding domain of human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (hACE2) for SARS-CoV-2. A set of five fluorescently tagged peptides were used to construct the senor array in the presence of different low-dimensional quenching materials. When orthogonally incubated with the wild-type SARS-CoV-2 and its variants of concern (VOCs), the fluorescence of each peptide probe was specifically recovered, and the different recovery rates provide a "fingerprint" characteristic of each viral strain. This, in turn, allows them to be differentiated from each other using principal component analysis. Interestingly, the classification result from our sensor array agrees well with the evolutionary relationship similarity of the VOCs. This study offers insight into the development of effective sensing tools for highly contagious viruses and their mutants based on rationally truncating peptide ligands from human receptors.

ABSTRACT

Cirrhosis is a chronic liver disease with severe consequences for a patient's health and survival. Exercise is an essential therapeutic strategy for both cirrhosis prevention and treatment. On the other hand, information regarding the present status of exercise-related research in cirrhosis is limited. Therefore, this study seeks to close the information gap in the scientific literature by using bibliometric techniques to analyze the trends, focal points, and cutting-edge research areas on exercise and cirrhosis. On September 22, 2023, research articles and reviews on exercise intervention for cirrhosis were obtained and downloaded from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). Subsequently, we employed CiteSpace (version 6.1.R6) to conduct bibliometric and knowledge graph analyses. 588 papers in 301 scholarly journals were written by 673 authors from 460 institutions spread over 63 countries and regions. The most productive nation among them is the United States. Not only is Zobair M. Younossi 1 of the most prolific writers, but he also receives the most co-citations. Most articles were published by the University of Michigan in the US, with the University of Alberta in Canada coming in second. Meanwhile, the WORLD JOURNAL OF GASTROENTEROLOGY has the most published articles, whereas HEPATOLOGY has the greatest number of co-citations. Apart from the theme words, the most frequently utilized keywords were "quality of life," "insulin resistance," and "mortality." Future research may concentrate on "obesity," "sarcopenia," and "Mediterranean diet," according to the analysis of keyword emergence. CiteSpace is used in this work to visually represent the topic of exercise intervention in cirrhosis, offering valuable information to researchers regarding the field's current status and possible future direction.

ABSTRACT

As a new type of porous crystalline composite material, MOF-COF has shown great advantages in metal separation. Herein, a CoMOF-COF was designed for highly selective separation of trace Pb2+ ions. The designed CoMOF-COF has a high density of nitrogen-oxygen functional groups and can selectively separate metal ions. There is a strong affinity between the designed CoMOF-COF material and metal Pb2+ ions, which can be attributed to the ordered heterogeneous porous structure and large amounts of nitrogen-and oxygen-containing functional groups. The composite showed high adsorption selectivity for Pb2+ ions and had adsorption capacity of 33 mg g-1, with high chemical stability. Based on this solid phase extraction material, a high sensitivity detection method for Pb2+ ions was established, which has the detection limit of 37.3 ng L-1, precision of 1.9 %. Linear detection range is 0.2-10 ng mL-1, and the detection of Pb2+ ions in actual water samples was realized. Through this study, it is proved that the strong affinity between the designed CoMOF-COF materials and metal Pb2+ ions can be attributed to the soft and hard acid-base theory, which reveals the structure-activity relationship between the porous heterostructure of such materials and metal separation, providing a highly selective separation material for the separation of other environmental pollutants.

ABSTRACT

Precision chemistry of synthetic carbon allotropes including fullerene and graphene, characterized by a well-controlled and spatially resolved addends bonding, has received widespread attention owing to its capability to tailor their physicochemical properties for high-end applications. In the context of fullerene, particularly endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs), precision chemistry emphasizes the regioselective binding of a specific number of moieties to the fullerene cage. In the case of graphene, precision chemistry focuses on achieving precise patterning and tailored modifications. Inspired by their intriguing advantages, the precision chemistry of these two members has witnessed rapid advancements. While existing reviews have outlined advancements in the precision chemistry of EMFs and graphene, this review uniquely concentrates on the most recent progress. Finally, the prospects in this field, with a special focus on the potential for creating functional materials through strategically patterned binding of fullerene and graphene networks are envisioned.

PURPOSE: To investigate the implications of Lobectomy (LT) or total thyroidectomy (TT) on psychological distress and sleep quality in PTC patients with a low to intermediate risk of recurrence and tumors measuring 1 to 4 cm. METHODS: Patients who were admitted to our hospital between July 2021 and July 2022 were prospectively enrolled in this survey. Psychological distress and sleep quality were assessed at hospitalization, discharge, and 1, 3, and 6 months post-treatment using validated scales. Participants were divided into LT and TT groups, with propensity score matching (PSM) applied for analyses. RESULTS: Among 525 eligible PTC patients, 440 patients completed all the questionnaires throughout the follow-up. After PSM, 166 patients underwent LT, and 166 patients underwent TT were enrolled. The psychological distress and sleep quality of patients in the LT group remained relatively stable during the 6-month follow-up, but patients in the TT group may have faced greater sleep quality concerns in the longitudinal assessment. Additionally, the sleep quality of the TT group was also worse than that of the LT group postoperatively. CONCLUSIONS: The sleep quality rather than other psychological distress of patients with PTC with a low to intermediate risk of recurrence is associated with the extent of surgery.

ABSTRACT

Cordyceps militaris, widely recognized as a medicinal and edible mushroom in East Asia, contains a variety of bioactive compounds, including cordycepin (COR), pentostatin (PTN) and other high-value compounds. This review explores the potential of developing C. militaris as a cell factory for the production of high-value chemicals and nutrients. This review comprehensively summarizes the fermentation advantages, metabolic networks, expression elements, and genome editing tools specific to C. militaris and discusses the challenges and barriers to further research on C. militaris across various fields, including computational biology, existing DNA elements, and genome editing approaches. This review aims to describe specific and promising opportunities for the in-depth study and development of C. militaris as a new chassis cell. Additionally, to increase the practicability of this review, examples of the construction of cell factories are provided, and promising strategies for synthetic biology development are illustrated.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUNDS: To compare the efficacy and safety of transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) combined Lenvatinib plus Camrelizumab (TLC) in unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (uHCC) with those of TACE alone . METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 222 patients with uHCC who were treated between September 2013 and Jun 2023. One group received TACE + lenvatinib + camrelizumab (TLC) (n = 97) and another group received TACE alone (n = 151). Efficacy and safety were compared after propensity score matching between the TLC and TACE groups. RESULTS: After propensity matching, the TLC group had higher objective response rate (ORR) (88.6% vs. 28.6%, P < 0.001), disease control rate (DCR) (94.3%% vs. 72.9%, P < 0.001), and conversion rates before and after propensity matching were 44.1% and 41.4%, respectively, compared with the TACE group. The median progression free survival (PFS) was longer in the TLC group than in the TACE group (12.7 vs. 6.1 months, P = 0.005). The median overall survival (OS) was longer in the TLC group than in the TACE group (19.4 vs. 13.0 months, P = 0.023). Cox multivariate analysis with different modes of adjustment showed that treatment was an independent influencing factor of PFS and OS. The interaction analysis showed that cirrhosis and Child-Pugh stage an interactive role in the PFS of different treatment. Decreased AFP after treatment portends higher ORR and DCR. CONCLUSION: TACE combined Lenvatinib plus Camrelizumab regimen was safe and superior to TACE alone in improving PFS, OS, and tumor response rates for unresectable recurrent HCC patients.

ABSTRACT

Dirac fermion in topological materials exhibits intriguing nonlinear optical responses. However, their direct correlation with the linearly dispersed band remains elusive experimentally. Here, we take topological semimetal ZrSiS as a paradigm, unveiling three unique nonlinear optical signatures of Dirac fermion. These signatures include strong quadrupolar response, quantum interference effect, and exponential divergent four-wave mixing (FWM), all of which are described by the prominent third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility. Resonantly enhanced by linear bands, quadrupolar second harmonic generation in centrosymmetric bulk overwhelms the electric-dipole contribution at the surface with inherent inversion symmetry breaking. Furthermore, owing to the interference between multiple resonant transition pathways within linear bands, difference-frequency FWM is several orders of magnitude stronger than sum-frequency FWM and third harmonic generation. The difference-frequency FWM further displays an inverse-square divergence toward degenerate excitation, whose scaling law perfectly matches with the long-sought behavior of Dirac fermion. These signatures lay the solid foundation toward the practical applications of topological materials in nonlinear optoelectronics and photonics.
