ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between the residual glomerular filtration rate (GFR) on the operated side and the GFR on the contralateral side following partial nephrectomy (PN) in patients with localized renal cell carcinoma (RCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Following institutional review board approval, we conducted a retrospective analysis of clinical records from May 2018 to July 2023, involving 118 patients who underwent partial nephrectomy for unilateral localized kidney tumors (T1-T2). Glomerular filtration rate data were assessed using single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/computed tomography imaging [using 9mTc-DTPA (diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid) renal dynamic imaging]. The independent determinants of postoperative renal function or renal function change were determined using linear regression analysis. In addition, the patient's demographic, clinical, and nephrometry characteristics were collected. RESULTS: A total of 58 patients were finally enrolled. The preoperative and postoperative GFR of bilateral kidneys showed a significant positive correlation. Postoperative GFR of the operated kidney was the independent predictor of GFR of contralateral kidney (p = 0.001). Tumor diameter (p = 0.036), age (p = 0.005), and postoperative GFR of the contralateral kidney (p = 0.001) were all independent predictors of postoperative GFR of the operated kidney. ΔGFR1 was the independent predictor of ΔGFR2. Results showed that a more pronounced postoperative decline in GFR on the operated side corresponded to a weaker compensatory capacity of the contralateral-side kidney. CONCLUSIONS: During the course of the surgical procedure, the active endeavor to safeguard the renal function of the operated kidney side holds paramount importance, which yields positive outcomes for postoperative kidney function on the contralateral side, consequently contributing to the overall preservation of renal function.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to explore the perceived effectiveness of waterpipe (WP) tobacco specific health warning labels (HWLs) among young adult WP smokers and nonsmokers in Lebanon. Before participating in focus group discussions, participants (n = 66; WP smokers n = 30; nonsmokers n = 36; age 18-33) completed a brief survey to rate the effectiveness of 12 HWLs' and rank them according to four risk themes (WP health effects, WP harm to others, WP-specific harm, and WP harm compared to cigarettes). Differences in HWLs ratings by WP smoking status were examined and the top-ranked HWL in each theme were identified. HWLs depicting mouth cancer and harm to babies were rated as the most effective by both WP smokers and non-smokers. WP smokers rated HWLs which depicted harm to children and infants as more effective than non-smokers. The top-ranked HWLs for perceived overall effectiveness were those depicting "oral cancer", "harm to babies", "orally transmitted diseases" and "mouth cancer". HWLs depicting oral lesions and harm to babies were rated as most effective, while HWLs showing the harmful effects of WP secondhand smoke on infants and children were rated as less effective by nonsmokers compared to smokers. Our study provides evidence on the potential effectiveness of HWLs for further evaluation in Lebanon and the Eastern Mediterranean region. The results will inform and guide the development and implementation of tobacco control policy.

ABSTRACT

[Objective]To explore the clinical experience of the treatment of coronary heart disease by Professor TANG Shuhua.[Methods]Through the clinical study with the teacher to collect and collate the relevant information and medical records, from the etiology and pathogenesis of coronary heart disease, governance and other aspects of the specific analysis and discussion on Professor TANG Shuhua treatment of this disease academic point of view and clinical experience,it summed up the rule of prescription, and to the case of evidence, through regular follow-up,observed the treatment effect. [Results]Professor TANG Shuhua believes that"Yin deficiency endogenous heat and blood stasis" is an important pathogenesis of coronary heart disease. Professor TANG in the treatment of coronary heart disease takes the pathogenesis as a guide, with the proposed nourishing liver and kidney, Qingrejiedu, invigorates the circulation of general pulse function applied to add and subtract, on the basis of Lu Huang Ke Li significantly improves the symptoms of coronary heart disease angina pectoris, delays the development of coronary heart disease progression and improves the quality of life.[Conclusion]Professor TANG Shuhua's treatment of coronary heart disease by nourishing Yin and heat and activating blood circulation is significant, which is of great significance to guiding the treatment of coronary heart disease.
