ABSTRACT

Dynamics and properties of breathers for the modified Korteweg-de Vries equations with negative cubic nonlinearities are studied. While breathers and rogue waves are absent in a single component waveguide for the negative nonlinearity case, coupling can induce regimes of modulation instabilities. Such instabilities are correlated with the existence of rogue waves and breathers. Similar scenarios have been demonstrated previously for coupled systems of nonlinear Schrödinger and Hirota equations. Both real- and complex-valued modified Korteweg-de Vries equations will be treated, which are applicable to stratified fluids and optical waveguides, respectively. One special family of breathers for coupled, complex-valued equations is derived analytically. Robustness and stability of breathers are studied computationally. Knowledge of the growth rates of modulation instability of plane waves provides an instructive prelude on the robustness of breathers to deterministic perturbations. A theoretical formulation of the linear instability of breathers will involve differential equations with periodic coefficient, i.e., a Floquet analysis. Breathers associated with larger eigenvalues of the monodromy matrix tend to suffer greater instability and increased tendency of distortion. Predictions based on modulation instability and Floquet analysis show excellent agreements. The same trend is obtained for simulations conducted with random noise disturbances. Linear approaches like modulation instabilities and Floquet analysis, thus, generate a very illuminating picture of the nonlinear dynamics.

ABSTRACT

Physical activity (PA) and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) are associated with successful brain and cognitive aging. However, little is known about the effects of PA, CRF, and exercise on the brain in the oldest-old. Here we examined white matter (WM) integrity, measured as fractional anisotropy (FA) and WM hyperintensity (WMH) burden, and hippocampal (HIPP) volume of Olga Kotelko (1919-2014). Olga began training for competitions at age of 77 and as of June 2014 held over 30 world records in her age category in track-and-field. We found that Olga's WMH burden was larger and the HIPP was smaller than in the reference sample (58 healthy low-active women 60-78 years old), and her FA was consistently lower in the regions overlapping with WMH. Olga's FA in many normal-appearing WM regions, however, did not differ or was greater than in the reference sample. In particular, FA in her genu corpus callosum was higher than any FA value observed in the reference sample. We speculate that her relatively high FA may be related to both successful aging and the beneficial effects of exercise in old age. In addition, Olga had lower scores on memory, reasoning and speed tasks than the younger reference sample, but outperformed typical adults of age 90-95 on speed and memory. Together, our findings open the possibility of old-age benefits of increasing PA on WM microstructure and cognition despite age-related increase in WMH burden and HIPP shrinkage, and add to the still scarce neuroimaging data of the healthy oldest-old (>90 years) adults.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: To study the agreement between audiometric test results measured in non-soundproof environments at the worksite, and in a soundproof booth. METHODS: In a cross sectional prevalence study on noise induced hearing loss, 885 transport workers whose hearing thresholds were measured by a standard audiometric test method in non-soundproof environments at the worksite were identified to have some hearing loss (>25 dB), and were retested in a soundproof booth. RESULTS: At 4-8 KHz, the mean of the absolute differences in hearing threshold obtained by these two methods was 2 dB or less. When the proportions of hearing loss (> or =30 dB for any frequencies at 3-8 KHz, or > or =90 dB for three low frequencies at 0.5-2 KHz, or > or =90 dB for three high frequencies at 3-6 KHz) were compared, considerable differences existed. A much better agreement was obtained when the criteria for hearing loss as measured in the field test under non-soundproof conditions were relaxed by 5 dB. At 4 KHz, the difference between the proportion of subjects with hearing loss as measured in the field and that as measured in the booth was the smallest. The kappa statistic was highest at 3 and 4 KHz. CONCLUSIONS: Audiometric test results conducted in non-soundproof environments in the field are comparable to those obtained in a soundproof environment among transport workers with a hearing loss of >25 dB. The hearing threshold at 4 KHz appears suitable for the estimation of the prevalence of hearing loss when appropriate adjustments are made in the diagnostic criteria.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, a synchronization scheme independent of the sign of the driving signal is developed and analyzed. The corresponding synchronization phenomenon is termed sign-independent synchronization in this context. In our coupling scheme, an even coupling function is used at the response in an attempt to make the response independent of the sign of the driving signal. Furthermore, the Jacobian (and hence the stability) defined on the synchronization manifold of sign-independent synchronization systems can be made identical to that of a corresponding active-passive decomposition system. Hence the conditions for achieving stable sign-independent synchronization can be generally established as a trivial case in unidirectionally coupled chaotic systems where the method of active-passive decomposition is applicable. Through numerical experiments performed on both continuous and discrete systems, we demonstrate that in-phase synchronization can be maintained even if the phase of the driving signal is randomly inverted. We believe the proposed chaotic synchronization will find important application in digital communications.

ABSTRACT

Physical, chemical and microbiological characteristics of two 'keiwais' (brackish ponds built along the coastal area for shrimp cultivation) in the Mai Po Marshes, Hong Kong, were measured and compared. One keiwai, located closer to the domestic and agricultural areas, had lower shrimp production than the other. Physical, microbiological and most of the chemical parameters of two keiwais showed no significant difference, while the keiwai closer to the domestic and agricultural areas had higher biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), and higher levels of phosphate (PO4(3-)-P) and cadmium (Cd2+). Results of the present study indicate that these keiwais were polluted by sewage discharged from nearby domestic, agricultural and industrial areas. The possibility that water received by the less polluted keiwai was purified by surrounding mangroves and sediments in the Mai Po Marshes is discussed.
