ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This meta-analysis aimed to synthesize randomized controlled trials to evaluate the effects of enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) on exercise capacity and quality of life in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). METHODS: Both English and Chinese databases were searched from their inception to June 30, 2020 (PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, CINAHL (EBSCO), Web of Science for English publications and Chinese Biomedical Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Data for Chinese publication). Titles, abstracts, and full-text articles were screened against study inclusion criteria: randomized controlled trials studying EECP intervention for patients with CHF. The meta-analysis was conducted with Revman 5.3 or STATA 16.0. RESULTS: Eight randomized controlled trials were included. EECP induced significant improvement in 6-min walking distance (WMD=84.79 m; 95% CI, 47.64 to 121.95; P < .00001). Moreover, EECP was beneficial for left ventricular ejection fraction (SMD = 0.64; 95% CI,0.29 to 1.00; P = .0004), and N-terminal pro brain natriuretic peptide (SMD = -0.61; 95%CI, -1.20 to -0.01; P = 0.04).However, compared with the control groups, EECP did not significantly reduce the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire scores(WMD, -9.28; 95% CI, -19.30 to 0.75; P = 0.07). CONCLUSIONS: Despite heterogeneity and risk of bias, this meta-analysis confirms that EECP can improve exercise capacity in CHF patients, especially the elderly. However, the evidence that EECP improves the quality of life in patients with CHF is still insufficient. More and larger well-designed randomized controlled trials are still warranted. ABSTRACT

Since the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in December 2019, an epidemic has spread rapidly worldwide. COVID-19 is caused by the highly infectious severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2. A 42-year-old woman presented to hospital who was suffering from epigastric discomfort and dyspepsia for the past 5 days. Before the onset of symptoms, she was healthy, and had no travel history to Wuhan or contact with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases. An examination showed chronic superficial gastritis with erosion and esophagitis. Enhanced magnetic resonance imaging of the abdomen showed a lesion in the right lower lobe of the lungs. Chest computed tomography showed multiple ground-glass opacity in the lungs. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was negative for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2. There was no improvement after antibiotic treatment. Polymerase chain reaction performed 2 days later was positive and she was diagnosed with COVID-19. After several days of antiviral and symptomatic treatments, her symptoms improved and she was discharged. None of the medical staff were infected. Clinical manifestations of COVID-19 are nonspecific, making differentiating it from other diseases difficult. This case shows the sequence in which symptoms developed in a patient with COVID-19 with gastrointestinal symptoms as initial manifestations.

ABSTRACT

Atherosclerosis has been recognized as a chronic inflammatory disease, which can harden the vessel wall and narrow the arteries. MicroRNAs exhibit crucial roles in various diseases including atherosclerosis. However, so far, the role of miR-328 in atherosclerosis remains barely explored. Therefore, our study concentrated on the potential role of miR-328 in vascular endothelial cell injury during atherosclerosis. In our current study, we observed that oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL)-induced human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) apoptosis and inhibited cell viability dose-dependently and time-dependently. In addition, indicated dosage of ox-LDL obviously triggered HUVECs inflammation and oxidative stress process. Then, it was found that miR-328 in HUVECs was reduced by ox-LDL. HUVECs apoptosis was greatly repressed and cell survival was significantly upregulated by overexpression of miR-328. Furthermore, mimics of miR-328 rescued cell inflammation and oxidative stress process induced by ox-LDL. Oppositely, inhibitors of miR-328 strongly promoted ox-LDL-induced endothelial cells injury in HUVECs. By using bioinformatics analysis, high-mobility group box-1 (HMGB1) was predicted as a downstream target of miR-328. HMGB1 has been reported to be involved in atherosclerosis development. The correlation between miR-328 and HMGB1 was validated in our current study. Taken these together, it was implied that miR-328 ameliorated ox-LDL-induced endothelial cells injury through targeting HMGB1 in atherosclerosis.

ABSTRACT

In the present work, a neodymium organic framework Nd(BTC) was synthesized by the solvothermal reaction of Nd(NO3)3 x 5H2O and H3BTC (BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) in mixed solvents of DMF, ethanol and water, and was identified by elemental analysis. This MOF complex was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TGA-DSC) analysis, UV-visible absorption spectra and fluorescence spectra. This polycrystalline powder lost DMF and H2O when heated to 120 degrees C, then remained stable till the temperature reached 500 degrees C. Near infrared fluorescence at 1064 nm due to the 4 F3/2--> 4 I11/2 transition of Nd3+ ions was exhibited when excited by 808 nm laser beam. It was also been found that up-conversion fluorescence of Nd(BTC) peaked at about 450 nm due to 2 D5/2 -->4 I11/2 transition of Nd3+ ions can be observed under the excitation of a 580 nm laser line. The mechanism of the up-conversion fluorescence of Nd(BTC) at around 450 nm under the excitation of 580 nm laser can be ascribed to both excited-state absorption and energy transfer up-conversion. This result indicated that such MOF can be employed as an up-conversion luminescence material in many potential application areas such as bio-labeling and fluorescence image.
