ABSTRACT

A digital coding metasurface is a platform connecting the digital space and electromagnetic wave space, and has therefore gained much attention due to its intriguing value in reshaping wireless channels and realizing new communication architectures. Correspondingly, there is an urgent need for electromagnetic information theory that reveals the upper limit of communication capacity and supports the accurate design of metasurface-based communication systems. To this end, we propose a macroscopic model and a statistical model of the digital coding metasurface. The macroscopic model uniformly accommodates both digital and electromagnetic aspects of the meta-atoms and predicts all possible scattered fields of the digital coding metasurface based on a small number of simulations or measurements. Full-wave simulations and experimental results show that the macroscopic model is feasible and accurate. A statistical model is further proposed to correlate the mutual coupling between meta-atoms with covariance and to calculate the entropy of the equivalent currents of digital coding metasurface. These two models can help reconfigurable intelligent surfaces achieve more accurate beamforming and channel estimation, and thus improve signal power and coverage. Moreover, the models will encourage the creation of a precoding codebook in metasurface-based direct digital modulation systems, with the aim of approaching the upper limit of channel capacity. With these two models, the concepts of current space and current entropy, as well as the analysis of information loss from the coding space to wave space, is established for the first time, helping to bridge the gap between the digital world and the physical world, and advancing developments of electromagnetic information theory and new-architecture wireless systems.

ABSTRACT

Due to the numerous industrial parks and high traffic density in Miaoli, Taiwan, large amounts of metals may be released into the atmosphere, accumulating in street dust. Therefore, this study aimed to collect street dust in Miaoli to quantify the metals and assess the accumulation degree, sources, and potential risks. The enrichment factor (EF), geological accumulation index (Igeo), ecological risk, and non-carcinogenic and lifetime carcinogenic risk were estimated to assess the accumulation degree and the potential environmental and health risks. Pearson correlation analysis, principal component analysis, and positive matrix factor model were used to clarify the relationship between levels of metals and identify possible sources. The levels of metals in street dust in order were Fe > Zn > Mn > Cu > Cr > Ni > Pb > Sr > Co > Sb. According to Igeo, the level of Ni indicated moderately polluted. The levels of Zn, Cu, and Pb showed moderate to strong pollution, strong pollution, and very strong pollution, respectively. Results of average ecological risk analysis pointed out that Pb and Cu represent a very high risk, while other metals posed low-to moderate-level ecological risks. Excluding the Steel Enterprise area, based on the EF value and source identification, it might be concluded that Co, Sr, Fe, Mn, and Sb were mainly from natural sources, while Cu, Pb, and Zn come from anthropogenic pollution sources. Based on the results of the risk assessments, most metals pose no serious adverse health risk to humans. But, in comparison to Miaoli townships, the health risks of residents living in the Steel Enterprise area were higher. However, given that children and adolescents exposure to Co, Cr, Pb, and Ni together constitute a relatively higher carcinogenic risk (CR > 10-6), more attention needs to be paid to the populations most susceptible.

ABSTRACT

Background: Neoadjuvant intraperitoneal and systemic chemotherapy (NIPS) has shown promising results in gastric cancer (GC) with peritoneal metastasis. However, clinical practice experience of NIPS is still lacking in China. In this study, we investigate the efficacy and safety of NIPS in Chinese patients. Methods: Eligible patients received NIPS every 3 weeks. Gastrectomy was performed for patients who met the criteria of conversion surgery. The primary end point was 1-year overall survival (OS) rate. Secondary end points were the response rate, toxic effects, conversion surgery outcomes and median survival time (MST). Results: Sixty-seven patients were enrolled. The primary endpoint was achieved with 1-year OS rate reached 67.2% (95% CI, 56.8%-79.4%). Conversion surgery was performed in 42 patients (62.9%), and R0 resection was achieved in 23 patients (54.8%) with the MST of 31.3 months (95% CI, 24.3-38.3). And the MST was 19.3 months (95% CI, 16.4-22.2) for all patients. Toxicity and surgical complications were well-tolerated. Moreover, sex, R0 resection, pathological nodal stage and tumor regression grade (TRG) were independent prognostic factors for patients who underwent conversion surgery. Conclusion: The NIPS is effective and safe in treating GC patients with peritoneal metastasis. Male patients, patients who underwent R0 resection, patients with ypN0-1 or TRG 1 after conversion surgery are more likely to benefit from the NIPS. ABSTRACT

Terahertz wave manipulations, especially the phase manipulations, through metasurfaces has attracted considerable interests. Here, we develop a terahertz beam steering device using the liquid-crystal (LC)-integrated programmable metasurface. Specifically, a reflective-type 1 bit metasurface element is designed by employing a multilayer structure composed of metallic back plate-LC-complementary split ring resonator (CSRR). Numerical simulations show that, at the optimized operation frequency of 0.675 THz, the developed metasurface element has a nearly 180° phase difference between unbiased and biased states with close reflection amplitudes. Furthermore, a one-dimensional programmable metasurface array with 32 independently controlled subarrays is designed and fabricated using the lithography technology. Both simulated and measured far-field scattering patterns of the metasurface certify the anomalous beam reflection and wide-angle beam steering performances. Nevertheless, the optimal frequency red shifts to 0.645 THz in the experiment. This work may advance the application of metasurfaces in terahertz beam manipulation devices.

ABSTRACT

Four complexes from lanthanides, 3-pyridylacetate, and 1,10-phenanthroline, formulated as [Ln2(3-PAA)2(µ-Cl)2(phen)4](ClO4)2 [Ln = Gd(1), Dy(2), Eu(3), Tb(4), 3-PAA = 3-pyridylacetic acid, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline], were obtained. The four compounds were characterized by IR spectra, thermogravimetric analyses, powder X-ray diffraction, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compounds 1-4 are isomorphous, and they have a dinuclear structure. Magnetic studies reveal that 1 shows the magnetocaloric effect with -ΔS m max = 19.03 J kg-1 K-1 at 2 K for ΔH = 5 T, and 2 displays a field-induced single-molecule magnet with U eff = 19.02 K. The photoluminescent spectra of 3 and 4 exhibit strong characteristic emission, which demonstrate that the ligand-to-EuIII/TbIII energy transfer is efficient.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To describe the application of reversed contralateral distal femoral locking compression plate (DF-LCP) inserted through a progressive and intermittent drilling procedure in the treatment of osteopetrotic subtrochanteric fracture (OSF). METHODS: Three patients (one male and two females with an average age of 45.33 ± 11.09 years) with OSF hospitalized between September 2015 and September 2020, were included in this present study. Lateral approach was applied in all patients who accepted open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with a reversed contralateral DF-LCP inserted through a progressive and intermittent drilling procedure. The operation time and intraoperative blood loss were recorded to evaluate the efficiency of this surgical method. Physical examination and imaging examination of the fracture site were used to evaluate the fracture union status, the position and stability of the implant, and the alignment of the injured limb at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after operation, then a subsequent visit was conducted at least once a year. Harris Hip Score (HHS) was used to evaluate the hip joint function at 6 and 12 months after operation. RESULTS: The average operation time was 140 ± 21.60 min (110, 160, and 150 min); The average intraoperative blood loss was about 333.33 ± 23.57 ml (300, 350, and 350 ml). The average follow-up time was 22.33 ± 7.41 months (29, 26, and 12 months). All patients achieved bone union with an average time of 6.67 ± 0.94 months (6, 8, and 6 months). At the time of 6 months after operation, case 1 and 3 were almost pain-free and could walk with full weight bearing while case 2 could walk only with partial weight bearing using a crutch. The HHS scores of cases 1, 2, and 3 were 84/100, 74/100, and 92/100, respectively. At the follow-up at 12 months after operation, the HHS score improved to 91/100, 81/100, and 96/100, respectively. The contralateral incomplete old subtrochanteric fracture was deteriorated in case 1 at 26 months after operation. After 3 months of limited weight bearing using a crutch, bone union was verified in radiograph imaging. Fresh contralateral subtrochanteric fracture occurred in case 2 at 26 months after operation, which was treated using a similar surgical approach, and its clinical outcome is under follow-up. Moreover, no perioperative complications including operation-related death, vascular/nerve injury, deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and incision infection, and long-term complications involving malunion, nonunion, implant failure, ankylosis, heterotopic ossification, osteonecrosis, and osteomyelitis were identified. CONCLUSION: The application of reversed contralateral DF-LCP in OSF is practicable and reliable. Progressive and intermittent drilling is a safe and efficient method for implant insertion in this complicated situation.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Most previous studies compared survival between left-sided and right-sided colon cancer without adjustment for clinicopathological parameters. We investigated the effect of sidedness on survival among patients with early-stage colon cancer, using a propensity score matching method. METHODS: The 18 registry custom data within the SEER database were used to identify patients who were diagnosed with colon cancer between 2010 and 2014. A propensity score matching analysis was performed using the nearest neighbor method. Survival was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. A Cox proportional hazards model was applied to determine the prognostic factors. RESULTS: In the unmatched cohort, 25,094 (35.72%) patients were diagnosed with left-sided colon cancer and 45,156 (64.28%) with right-sided colon cancer. After propensity score matching, each cohort included 5118 patients, and the clinicopathological characteristics were well balanced. In the unmatched cohort, left-sided colon cancer had superior all-cause (χ2=315, P<0.01) and cancer-specific (χ2=43, P<0.01) survival than right-sided tumors. However, in the matched cohort, no difference was observed for all-cause (χ2=0.7, P=0.4) and cancer-specific (χ2=0, P=0.96) survival between left and right colon cancer. The Cox model did not indicate sidedness as a prognostic factor. In the subgroup analysis, stage II right-sided colon cancer had a better survival outcome, while stage III left-sided tumors had a better survival outcome. CONCLUSIONS: After adjusting for clinicopathological characteristics in this study, sidedness showed no impact on survival in early-stage colon cancer. However, sidedness was associated with prognostic differences in stages II and III early-stage colon cancer.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: To investigate the prevalence of overactive bladder (OAB) and assess its risk factors in 5- to 14-year-old Chinese children. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of OAB prevalence was performed by distributing 11 800 anonymous self-administered questionnaires to parents in five provinces of mainland China from July to October 2018. The questionnaires included questions on sociodemographics, history of urinary tract infection (UTI), lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), family history of LUTS, bowel symptoms, and details about the elimination communication (EC) start time. OAB was defined as urgency and increased the daytime frequency with or without urinary incontinence. RESULTS: A total of 10 133 questionnaires qualified for statistical analysis. The overall prevalence of OAB was 9.01% and decreased with age, from 12.40% at 5 years to 4.55% at 14 years (χ2 trend = 88.899; P < .001). The proportion of dry OAB increased with age, whereas the proportion of wet OAB decreased. A late-onset of EC was associated with a high OAB prevalence (χ2 trend = 39.802; P < .001). Children with obesity, a history of UTI, nocturnal enuresis (NE), a family history of LUTS, constipation, and fecal incontinence had a higher prevalence of OAB than did normal children (P < .05). CONCLUSION: Obesity, a history of UTI, NE, a family history of LUTS, and bowel symptoms are risk factors associated with OAB. Starting EC before 12 months of age might help reduce the prevalence of OAB in children.

ABSTRACT

BaTiO3 (BTO) ceramics were fabricated based on stereolithography technology. The microstructures and electric properties of the BTO ceramics were studied. X-ray patterns of sintered BTO ceramics indicated that the tetragonal phase had formed, and the grain size increased clearly as BTO weight percentage increased. Moreover, the BTO ceramics exhibited good electric properties, with a piezoelectric constant d33 of 166 pC/N at 80% BTO weight percentage. To evaluate the properties of 3D printed BTO ceramics, a 1.4 MHz focused ultrasonic array was fabricated and characterized. The -6dB bandwidth of the array was 40%, and the insertion loss at the center frequency was 50 dB. The results show that the printed BTO ceramics array have good potential to be used in ultrasonic transducers for various applications.

ABSTRACT

In this study, we reported the complete chloroplast genome of Fortunella crassifolia Swingle using the HiSeq-4000 sequencing. The chloroplast genome size is 160,229 bp, which consists of a large single-copy region (87,774 bp), a small single-copy region (18,721 bp), and a pair of IR regions (26,867 bp). The chloroplast genome contains 114 unique genes, including 80 protein-coding genes, 30 tRNAs, and 4 rRNAs. Phylogenetic maximum likelihood analysis showed that F. crassifolia was closest to Hongkong kumquat (F. hindsii). The complete chloroplast genome would be subsequently used for citrus species researches.

ABSTRACT

Congenital urinary tract obstruction is one of the most frequent malformations in fetuses or neonates, which usually causes profound impairment of renal function including reductions in both glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and tubular handling of water and solutes. Although obstruction can be released by surgical operation, the child will suffer from diuresis for sometime. It has been reported that erythropoietin (EPO) could prevent the down-regulation of aquaporin-2 (AQP2) and urinary-concentrating defects induced by renal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. However, whether EPO could promote the recovery of renal function and AQP2 expression after releasing of ureteral obstruction has not been reported yet. The purposes of the present study were to investigate the effects of EPO on renal function and AQP2 expression after release of bilateral ureteral obstruction (BUO-R) in rats. The results showed that EPO could promote interleukin (IL) 10 (IL-10) expression; inhibit tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), IL-6, and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expressions; reduce the fractional excretion of sodium (FENa) and plasma creatinine (CREA) and urea; and promote the recovery of water and salt handling and AQP2 expression in BUO-R rats, especially in the high dose of EPO-treated group rats. In conclusion, EPO could promote the recovery of renal function and AQP2 expression in BUO-R rats, which may partially associate with its anti-inflammation effect.

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of replacing dietary fish oil (FO) with palm oil (PO) in juvenile Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (9.34± 0.02g initial weight) with emphasis on growth performance, digestive enzyme activities as well as serum biochemical parameters. Also, lysozyme activity (LYZ), respiratory burst (RB), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and resistance to Streptococcus iniae were investigated. Fish were stocked in 15 rectangular fiber glass tanks (150× 60× 40 cm) at 40 fish per tank with water maintained at 210 litres. Fish were fed five isonitrogenous (33% crude protein) and isolipidic (10% lipid) diets with PO included at 0% (0% PO), 25% (25% PO), 50% (50%PO), 75% (75% PO) and 100% (100% PO) for 8 weeks. The findings demonstrated that growth, and feed utilization was not compromised when PO was used in place of FO either partially or totally. Except for protease activity which was not significantly altered, lipase and amylase activities were significantly altered when FO was replaced with PO. There were no significant differences among treatments for CAT, SOD and LYZ. Serum malondialdehyde (MDA) in fish fed 100% PO was significantly lower than all other groups whiles total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of fish fed 0% PO was significantly higher than all other groups. Fish fed 0% PO, 25% PO and 50% PO had glutathione reductase (GR) significantly higher than fish fed 75% PO and 100% PO. RB in fish fed 0% PO were significantly lower than fish fed 75% PO and 100% PO. Also, fish fed 0% PO had significantly lower total protein (TP) compared with groups fed 50% PO and 75% PO. Fish fed diets with PO had similar resistance ability to Streptococcus iniae as those fed diets with FO. However, the liver function was likely to be compromised due to the increase in aspartate amino transferase (AST) and alkaline phosphatas (ALP) along increasing PO inclusion levels. AST, total protein, triacylglycerol (TAG) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were significantly higher (p<0.05) in groups fed higher levels of PO. This study therefore concludes that feeding tilapia fingerlings with diets containing PO affects antioxidant and innate immune parameters negatively due to the reduction in LYS, TAC, GR, MDA, CAT, SOD and GSHpx.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: To investigate the feasibility of restoring bladder function and prevention of renal deterioration by neurorrhaphy in rats with neurogenic bladder (NB). METHODS: Forty-two rats were assigned to the end-to-side nerve coaptation group (ECG, n = 16), no nerve coaptation group (NCG, n = 16), and control group (CG, n = 10). In the ECG, the left ventral root (VR) and dorsal root (DR) of L6 and S1 were transected, and the distal stump of L6VR was sutured to the lateral face of L4VR. In the NCG, the left VR and DR of L6 and S1 were transected, but coaptation was not performed. In the CG, no operation was performed. Nerve regeneration, bladder function, and renal function were evaluated by FluoroGold (FG) retrograde tract tracing, cystometry, electrical stimulation, MRI, histology and biochemical assays. RESULTS: In the ECG, FG-labeled neurons were observed in the left ventral horn of L4 spinal cord. There was a significant increase in intravesical pressure upon stimulation of the left L4VR proximal to the coaptation. Maximum cystometric capacity, post-void residual urine, bladder compliance and weight, serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, and fibrotic area of bladder and kidney were lower in the ECG than in the NCG, but higher than the CG. Hydronephrosis was noticed in ECG and NCG rats. Maximum detrusor voiding pressure was higher in the ECG and CG than in the NCG. CONCLUSIONS: End-to-side neurorrhaphy is a useful method for restoring bladder function and preventing renal injury in rats with NB.

ABSTRACT

ObjectiveThe genotypes and drug-resistance mutation of hepatitis B virus (HBV) are closely related to the progression of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and effects of medication. This study was to identify the genotypes and drug-resistance mutation genes of HBV in West Guangxi and provide some laboratory evidence for anti-HBV treatment.MethodsWe collected serum samples from 869 CHB patients with HBV DNA >1.0×103 IU/mL, all from West Guangxi, between January 2016 and March 2018. We detected the genotypes and drug-resistance mutation genes in the patients by PCR and reverse dot blot (PCR-RDB).ResultsA total of 7 genotypes were identified in the patients, including genotypes B in 304 cases (34.98%), C in 268 (30.84%), D in 147 (16.92%), B+C in 28 (3.22%), B+D in 22 (2.53%), C+D in 1 (0.12%) and B+C+D in 1 (0.12%). Drug-resistance mutation was observed in 63 cases (7.25%), including 31 cases with genotype C (49.21%) and 19 with genotype B (30.16%). Fourteen gene mutation patterns were found in all, including rt204I, rt181V, rt236T, rt180M+rt204V, and rt180M+rt204V+rt204I, among which, rt180M+rt204V exhibited the highest mutation frequency (17.46%). There was a statistically significant difference between the mutation rates of genotypes B and C (19% vs 31%, P < 0.05).ConclusionCHB patients in West Guangxi have a wide variety of genotypes of HBV, mainly including genotypes B and C, with a high rate and complicated patterns of drug-resistance mutation, which has provided some reference for anti-HBV treatment in West Guangxi.

Objective There is still a lack of effective treatment for hepatitis B. The article aimed to investigate the inhibito-ry and antiviral effects of hepatitis B virus(HBV)S gene expression by anti-gene locked nucleic acid(LNA)in vivo in transgenic mice. Methods The HBV transgenic mice were divided into 5 groups by random number,6 in each group. They were blank group, irrelevant sequence group,lamivudine group,antisense locked nucleic acid group,and anti-gene locked nucleic acid group respective-ly. The lamivudine group was treated by oral gastric lavage,with 2mg/kg dose 2 times per day for continuous 7d,and the rest groups were injected with 500 mL by tail vein injection at 1,3,5 d after ad-ministration. HBV DNA was tested by real-time quantitative polymer-ase chain reaction(qPCR);HBsAg was tested by ELISA;mRNA of HBV S gene was detected by reverse transcription PCR(RT-PCR);the positive rate of HBsAg in liver cells was detected by immunohisto-chemistry. Results After the treatment of anti-gene locked nucleic acid on 3rd,5th,7thday,the inhibition rate of HBV DNA were 37.18%,50.27%,61.46%,and HBsAg were 30.17%,44%,57.76%. The inhibitory effect on 7thday was more obvious than those of the blank group,the unrelated sequence group,the lamivudine group and the antisense lock nucleic acid group,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).The expression of mRNA S gene HBV(0.33)and liver cells HBsAg positive rate(31%)was signif-icantly reduced compared with control group(P<0.05).No abnormal change was found in the function of liver and kidney tests and tis-sue HE staining. Conclusion Anti-gene lock nucleic acid targeting to S gene has strong inhibitory effects on HBV replication and expression in transgenic mice,which provides theoretical and experimental knowledge for HBV gene therapy.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To investigate the prevalence of spina bifida occulta (SBO) and its relationship with the presence of overactive bladder (OAB) in middle-aged and elderly people in China. METHODS: A cross-sectional community-based survey was carried out at 7 communities in Zhengzhou City, China from December 15, 2013 to June 10, 2014, where residents aged over 40 years were randomly selected to participate. All of the participants underwent lumbosacral radiographic analysis and relevant laboratory tests. A questionnaire including basic information, past medical history and present illness, and the OAB symptom score was filled out by all participants. Chi-square tests and logistic regression were used for data analysis with a P-value of <0.05 denoting statistical significance. RESULTS: A total of 1,061 subjects were qualified for the final statistical analysis (58.8±11.7 years; male, 471 [44.4%]; female, 590 [55.6%]). The overall prevalence of SBO was 15.1% (160 of 1,061): 18.3% (86 of 471) in men and 12.5% (74 of 590) in women. Among these subjects, 13.7% (145 of 1,061) had OAB: 13.2% (62 of 471) in men and 14.1% (83 of 590) in women. The results of logistic regression showed that age, SBO, history of cerebral infarction (HCI), and constipation were risk factors for OAB (P<0.05), while sex, history of childhood enuresis (HCE), body mass index (BMI), and diabetes mellitus (DM) were not (P>0.05). In men, age, SBO, and constipation were risk factors for OAB (P<0.05), while HCE, BMI, DM, HCI, and benign prostate hyperplasia were not (P>0.05). In women, age, SBO, and HCI were risk factors for OAB (P<0.05), while HCE, BMI, DM, vaginal delivery, and constipation were not (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of SBO is high and it is related to OAB in middle-aged and elderly people in China.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of short, evolutionary conserved non-coding RNA molecules, which are shown as the key regulators of many biological functions. External stress can alter miRNA expression levels, thereby changing the expression of mRNA target genes. Here, we show that miR-21 is involved in the regulation of alkalinity tolerance in Nile tilapia. Alkalinity stress results in a marked reduction in miR-21 levels. miR-21 loss of function could affect ion balance regulation, ROS production, and antioxidant enzyme activity in vivo. Moreover, miR-21 knockdown protects cell against alkalinity stress-induced injury in vitro. miR-21 directly regulates VEGFB and VEGFC expression by targeting the 3'-untranslated regions (UTRs) of their mRNAs, and inhibition of miR-21 significantly increases the levels of VEGFB and VEGFC expression in vivo. Taken together, our study reveals that miR-21 knockdown plays a protective role in alkalinity tolerance in tilapia.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To explore the method and effect of degloving approach in the treatment of nasal-orbital-ethmoid(NOE) complex fracture surgery. METHODS: Eleven cases of unilateral nasal-orbital-ethmoid fracture(NOE) were selected from Medical Center of Stomatology, Foshan Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. 6 were orbital fracture, 5 were nasal fracture. All the patients were treated open reduction and rigid internal fixation or rhinoplasty via midfacial degloving approach. RESULTS: Eleven patients were followed up for 3 to 12 months, all patients had transient nasal crusting and bleeding,1 case had traumatic epiphora, 4 cases had infraorbital temporary numbness,1 case of crooked nose. CONCLUSIONS: The degloving approach can achieve the advantages of a widely exposed field for operation,no facial scar,and no complications such as nasal vestibular stenosis. It is worthy of wide clinical application.

A new organocatalytic one-pot multistep transformation via Knoevenagel condensation/aza-Michael addition/electrophilic fluorination has been developed. Simple starting materials were used under mild conditions to construct fluorinated 2,3-dihydroquinolin-4(1H)-one derivatives in good to high yields (up to 98%) and diastereoselectivities (dr up to 99/1).

ABSTRACT

AIM: To assess the application of the Kasai procedure in the surgical management of hilar bile duct strictures. METHODS: Ten consecutive patients between 2005 and 2011 with hilar bile duct strictures who underwent the Kasai procedure were retrospectively analyzed. Kasai portoenterostomy with the placement of biliary stents was performed in all patients. Clinical characteristics, postoperative complications, and long-term outcomes were analyzed. All patients were followed up for 2-60 mo postoperatively. RESULTS: Patients were classified according to the Bismuth classification of biliary strictures. There were two Bismuth III and eight Bismuth IV lesions. Six lesions were benign and four were malignant. Of the benign lesions, three were due to post-cholecystectomy injury, one to trauma, one to inflammation, and one to inflammatory pseudotumor. Of the malignant lesions, four were due to hilar cholangiocarcinoma. All patients underwent Kasai portoenterostomy with the placement of biliary stents. There were no perioperative deaths. One patient experienced anastomotic leak and was managed conservatively. No other complications occurred perioperatively. During the follow-up period, all patients reported a good quality of life. CONCLUSION: The Kasai procedure combined with biliary stents may be appropriate for patients with hilar biliary stricture that cannot be managed by standard surgical methods.
