ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the short-term effects of three myopia-control lenses, which impose peripheral myopic defocus while providing clear central vision, on central and peripheral visual performance in myopic children. METHODS: Twenty-one myopic children were enrolled in the study. Central visual performance was assessed using the quick contrast sensitivity function. Peripheral visual performance was evaluated by measuring peripheral contrast threshold and global motion perception, while subjects maintained fixation through the central portion of the lens. Single-vision spectacle lenses (SVL), spectacle lenses with highly aspherical lenslets (HAL) and defocus-incorporated soft contact (DISC) lenses were evaluated in random order, followed by orthokeratology (OK) lenses. All tests were performed monocularly on the right eye. RESULTS: The area under the log contrast sensitivity function (AULCSF) with DISC lenses was lower than that with SVL (1.14 vs. 1.40, p < 0.001) and HAL (1.14 vs. 1.33, p = 0.001). HAL increased the temporal visual field contrast threshold compared with OK lenses (p = 0.04), and OK lenses decreased the superior visual field contrast threshold compared with that of SVL (p = 0.04) and HAL (p = 0.005). HAL also increased the peripheral coherence threshold for identifying the contraction movement compared with OK lenses (p = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The short-term use of these optical interventions for myopia control exhibited measurable differences in central and peripheral visual performance. Relevant attention could be paid to these differences, especially when children switch to different treatments. DISC lenses exhibited worse central contrast sensitivity than SVL and HAL. Imposing peripheral defocus signals did not affect children's peripheral visual performance compared with SVL. However, considering the poorer peripheral visual performance provided by HAL, OK lenses are recommended for children if there are specific demands for global scene recognition and motion perception.

ABSTRACT

The enzymatic approach is a highly effective and the major scientific method to eliminating bitter components in citrus-derived products nowadays. Microbial production of limonin invertase stands out due to its pivotal role in the removal of the bitter substance, limonin. The optimization of fermentation parameters and the study of scale-up fermentation are imperative for product commercialization. In this study, we focused on optimizing stirring speed, fermentation temperature, and initial pH to enhance the growth and limonin invertase production by the Aspergillus tabin strain UA13 in a 5-l stirred-tank bioreactor. Our results revealed the following optimal parameters are: a stirring speed of 300 rpm, a fermentation temperature of 35°C and a pH 5.0. Under these optimized conditions, the limonin invertase activity reached its peak at 63.38 U ml-1, representing a 1.67-fold increase compared to the unoptimized conditions (38.10 U ml-1), while also reducing the fermentation duration by 12 h. Furthermore, our research demonstrated that limonin invertase effectively hydrolyze limonin in grapefruit juice, reducing its content from 13.28 to 2.14 µg ml-1, as determined by HPLC, resulting in a 6.21-fold reduction of the bitter substance.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Specialized agricultural services are a new trend in agricultural production around the world, especially in developing countries. However, the growing impacts of specialized agricultural services on pesticide application intensity are unclear. In regions facing pesticide overuse, do specialized agricultural services exacerbate or mitigate the problem? RESULTS: Based on province-level panel data from China from 2004 to 2018, this study examines the impact of specialized agricultural services on pesticide application intensity, considering both direct and indirect (i.e. spatial spillover) effects. The dual impacts of specialized agricultural services on pesticide application intensity in China are identified. First, specialized agricultural services directly increase pesticide application intensity, likely due to increased cultivation and specialized management of land that was previously abandoned or marginally managed. Second, there is a negative indirect or spatial spillover effect of specialized agricultural services on pesticide application intensity, likely due to technology and efficiency diffusion enabled by the cross-regional provision of specialized agricultural services. The net impact of specialized agricultural services on pesticide application intensity is negative. CONCLUSION: Crop protection services are regarded as the core force to promote the reduction of pesticide application intensity. Steps should be taken to promote the research and development, demonstration, and promotion of new technologies and equipment for crop protection services, particularly the development of crop protection by drones. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Spectacle lenses with highly aspherical lenslets (HAL) and slightly aspherical lenslets (SAL) showed effective myopia control. This study was to investigate their effects on macular choroidal thickness (ChT) in myopic children. METHODS: Exploratory analysis from a 2-year, double-masked, randomised trial. 170 children aged 8-13 years with myopia between -0.75D and -4.75D, astigmatism of 1.50D or less, and anisometropia of 1.00D or less were recruited. Participants were randomly assigned in a 1:1:1 ratio to receive HAL, SAL or single vision spectacle lenses (SVL). The subfoveal, parafoveal and perifoveal ChT were evaluated every 6 months. RESULTS: 154 participants completed all examinations. The ChT showed significant changes over time in all three groups in all regions (all p<0.05). The ChTs continuously decreased in the SVL group (ranging from -20.75 (SD 22.34) µm to -12.18 (22.57) µm after 2 years in different regions). Compared with the SVL group, ChT in the SAL group decreased less (ranging from -16.49 (21.27) µm to -5.29 (18.15) µm). In the HAL group, ChT increased in the first year and then decreased in the second year (ranging from -0.30 (27.54) µm to 8.92 (23.97) µm after two years). The perifoveal ChT decreased less than the parafoveal ChT, and the superior region decreased the least. CONCLUSIONS: The ChT of the macula decreased after 2 years of myopia progression with SVL. Wearing spectacle lenses with aspherical lenslets reduced or abolished the ChT thinning and HAL had a more pronounced effect. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: ChiCTR1800017683.

ABSTRACT

Importance: Reducing myopia progression can reduce the risk of associated ocular pathologies. Objective: To evaluate whether spectacle lenses with higher lenslet asphericity have a higher myopia control efficacy throughout 2 years. Design, Setting, and Participants: This double-masked randomized clinical trial was conducted between July 2018 and October 2020 at the Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University in Wenzhou, China. Children aged 8 to 13 years with a cycloplegic spherical equivalent refraction (SER) of -0.75 D to -4.75 D and astigmatism with less than -1.50 D were recruited. A data and safety monitoring committee reviewed findings from a planned interim analysis in 2019. Interventions: Participants were randomly assigned in a 1:1:1 ratio to receive spectacle lenses with highly aspherical lenslets (HAL), spectacle lenses with slightly aspherical lenslets (SAL), or single-vision spectacle lenses (SVL). Main Outcome and Measures: Two-year changes in SER and axial length and their differences between groups. Results: Of 157 participants who completed each visit (mean [SD] age, 10.4 [1.2] years), 54 were analyzed in the HAL group, 53 in the SAL group, and 50 in the SVL group. Mean (SE) 2-year myopia progression in the SVL group was 1.46 (0.09) D. Compared with SVL, the mean (SE) change in SER was less for HAL (by 0.80 [0.11] D) and SAL (by 0.42 [0.11] D; P ≤ .001). The mean (SE) increase in axial length was 0.69 (0.04) mm for SVL. Compared with SVL, increase in axial length was slowed by a mean (SE) of 0.35 (0.05) mm for HAL and 0.18 (0.05) mm for SAL (P ≤ .001). Compared with SVL, for children who wore HAL at least 12 hours every day, the mean (SE) change in SER was slowed by 0.99 (0.12) D, and increase in axial length slowed by 0.41 (0.05) mm. Conclusions and Relevance: In this study, HAL and SAL reduced the rate of myopia progression and axial elongation throughout 2 years, with higher efficacy for HAL. Longer wearing hours resulted in better myopia control efficacy for HAL. Trial Registration: Chinese Clinical Trial Registry Identifier: ChiCTR1800017683.

ABSTRACT

Reducing fertilizer use is key to curbing agricultural pollution and ensuring food safety. Land transfer enables farmers to obtain a more appropriate production scale, but its effect on the intensity of fertilizer application is not theoretically certain. On one hand, farmers with more land may adopt more scientific production methods, thus reducing the use of chemical fertilizers. On the other hand, the short-term behavior of land grantees on transferred land may increase fertilizer use intensity. This paper attempts to theoretically elucidate the specific mechanisms by which land transfer affects the intensity of fertilizer application and to verify the relationship between the two using data from fixed rural observation sites across China from 2011-2014 with the fixed-effects model and the mediating effect model. This paper concludes that (1) land transfer significantly reduces the intensity of fertilizer use; (2) land transfer increases the land size and promotes the use of machinery by farmers, but only the increase in land size further reduces the intensity of fertilizer application; (3) the effect of land transfer on fertilizer application intensity is significant only for food crops and not for cash crops, and (4) the effect of land transfer on fertilizer application intensity is most pronounced in western China, where land fragmentation is the severest and insignificant in eastern China, where agricultural modernization is more advanced.

ABSTRACT

Poverty seriously hinders the inclusive development of mankind and is closely related to economic growth, ecological protection, ecological restoration and sustainable use of resources. Based on the data of economic census and rural fixed observation point, a spatial econometric model is established to test the direct impact and spatial spillover effect of industrial clusters on rural poverty alleviation. The result of household-level is that the number of industrial clusters has a negative effect on poverty, namely the farmers who live in the county with more industrial clusters, may be less likely to become the poor. The number of industrial clusters in other regions also has a negative effect on poverty. By dividing farmers into the poverty and non-poverty group, the study finds that, for the poverty group, the number of industrial clusters has a positive direct and spillover effect on farmers' income. For the non-poverty group, the number of local industrial clusters has a positive direct effect on farmers' income, but the number of industrial clusters in other regions does not have any effects or has a negative direct effect on farmers' income. By classifying the industries, the study discovers that the labor-intensive industrial clusters, such as textiles, manufacture and processing of machinery parts and paper industries, have a positive effect on farmers' income.
