ABSTRACT

Objective: To accurately measure the dynamic changes of peri-implant soft tissue within one year after the immediate implant placement and provisionalization with the modified socket-shield technique (MSST) in the esthetic zone, and to provide a basis for evaluating the effect of the modified socket-shield technique on the maintenance of peri-implant soft tissue. Methods: A total of 22 patients (22 implants) were prospectively included 1 year after completion of immediate implant placement and provisionalization (IIPP) within MSST in the esthetic zone from January 2022 to January 2024 at the Department of Oral Implantology in the Stomatological Hospital of Chongqing Medical University. The patients were (40±13) years old (21-75 years), including 9 males and 13 females. The intraoral optical models of patients were obtained by an intraoral scanner system preoperatively and at 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively, respectively. The standard tessellation language files of intraoral optical models at multiple time points were imported to Geomagic Studio 2013 to be superimposed and aligned for analyzing the peri-implant soft tissue contour on the labial side of the implant site at multiple levels. The amount of gingival margin recession, gingival papilla change, and thickness change of the labial side of the soft tissues at each postoperative point in time were measured at each postoperative time point, as well as evaluating the esthetic effect by the pink esthetic score (PES). Results: No adverse events occurred in all the implants during the 12-month follow-up period. The recession level of the gingival margin of the implant site (GL) was 0.08 (0.07) mm, the recession level of the mesial papilla (ML) was 0.19 (0.25) mm, and the recession level of the distal papilla (DL) was 0.19 (0.10) mm. The average collapse thickness of the soft tissue contour on the labial side of the implant (ΔD) was (0.39±0.09) mm, mainly occurring within 2 mm of the root of the gingival margin. The height of the alveolar bone was reduced by (0.17±0.08) mm. The thickness of the labial alveolar bone at 1, 3, and 5 mm root side of the implant shoulder was reduced by (0.13±0.08), (0.12±0.10) and 0.04 (0.17) mm, respectively. The postoperative pink esthetic score was 13.00 (2.25) points at 12 months, which suggested that all implant sites achieved ideal esthetic results. Conclusions: The labial soft tissue contour at implant sites shows minimal change following immediate implant placement and provisionalization using the modified socket-shield technique for 1 year in the esthetic zone.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To analyze the trajectory of drowning and road traffic injury mortality among children aged 5-14 years in China from 2008 to 2019. Methods: Mortality data of unintentional injuries were from the Mortality Surveillance Data Set of National Disease Surveillance System from 2009 to 2018 and grouped by regions, urban and rural areas, genders, and age groups. The trajectory model was used to analyze the trend of drowning and road traffic injury mortality with years. Results: The mortality of drowning and road traffic injury showed a similar trend. In the trajectory model of drowning mortality, east, middle and west rural boys and western urban boys of all ages belonged to the high mortality group. The moderate mortality group included eastern urban boys and western girls aged 5-9 years and also contained eastern and middle urban boys and western urban girls aged 10-14 years. The other combinations belonged to the low mortality group. In the trajectory model of road traffic injury mortality, western urban boys, all rural boys and western rural girls aged 5-9 years, middle and western rural boys and western urban boys aged 10-14 years belonged to the high mortality group. Eastern urban girls aged 5-9 years and 10-14 years belonged to the low mortality group. The other combinations belonged to the moderate mortality group. Conclusion: There are different groups in the trajectory model of drowning and road traffic injury mortality among children in China. Identifying the trajectory of injury mortality is helpful to carry out more targeted prevention in China.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To describe the prevalence of e-cigarette use among adolescent in Zhejiang province, and to analyze its distribution of different genders and school types to provide evidence for controlling the use of e-cigarette among adolescent. Methods: A total of 7 663 students from 60 middle schools through stratified multi-stage cluster sampling methods from Zhejiang province were surveyed by using questionnaire. Indicators as tried to use e-cigarette rate, current e-cigarette using rate, and other indicators were collected. All data were weighted by age proportions of adolescent in Zhejiang. Results: The prevalence of tried to use and current using e-cigarettes among middle school students were 6.99% and 1.45%, respectively; and there were 4.19% juniors who were susceptibility to future e-cigarette use. The rate of tied to use e-cigarette, current using e-cigarette and susceptibility to future e-cigarette use were higher in boys than in girls. The rate of current using e-cigarette was 2.07% for rural and 0.48% for urban. Technical secondary school students had the highest rate of tried to use e-cigarette and susceptibility to future e-cigarette use (13.53%, 6.91%). Junior school students (2.96%) had the lowest level of susceptibility to future tobacco use. The rate of tried e-cigarette use and current e-cigarette use and susceptibility to future e-cigarette use were higher in the group of "One of students' parents was smoker" (8.63%, 2.19%, 5.23%). The highest rate of current smoking was found in the group of "Weekly allowance more than 50 Yuan" (10.02%, 2.54%, 6.29%). Compared to technical secondary school students, senior school student (OR=0.57) and junior school students (OR=0.45) were less likely to try to use e-cigarette. Students whose weekly allowance were less than 20 Yuan were less likely to try to use e-cigarette (OR=0.49). Students who were boys (OR=5.44) and one of their parents was smoker (OR=1.59) were more likely to try to use e-cigarette. Conclusions: There were middle school students with tried e-cigarette use and current e-cigarette use, especially in technical secondary schools. The prevalence of e-cigarette using among middle school students increased with age. It is important to further spread of e-cigarette knowledge widely and deeply, and reduce the susceptible population of adolescents using e-cigarettes.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To bring forward an arthroscopic classification of the popliteal hiatus of the lateral meniscus (PHLM) tears and to assess the effects of arthroscopic all-inside repair with suture hook in management of such injuries. METHODS: This study involved 146 patients who underwent arthroscopic operation because of PHLM tears from April 2014 to October 2017, eliminating the patients who had discoid lateral meniscus. There were 81 males and 65 females, with 54 left knees and 92 right knees. The average ages were (34.7±3.7) years. Among the selected participants, there were 107 patients with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, 39 patients with medial collateral ligament (MCL) injuries, and 48 patients with medial meniscus tears. The average preoperative Lysholm and International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) scores were 57.7±9.2 and 54.1±8.9, respectively. The arthroscopic classification was based on the extent and degree of PHLM tears and using the arthroscopic all-inside repair with suture hook for such injuries. For the patients associated with ACL injuries, the ipsilateral autograft hamstring tendons use as the reconstruction graft for single bundle ACL reconstructions. The suture anchors were used for treatment of MCL Ⅲ injuries, and the arthroscopic all-inside repair for medial meniscus tears. RESULTS: A total of 146 PHLM tears in 146 patients were divided into type Ⅰ (tears not involved in popliteus tendon incisura; n=86, 58.9%), type Ⅱ (tears involved in popliteomeniscal fascicles; n=36, 24.7%), and type Ⅲ (tears involved in popliteus tendon incisura; n=24, 16.4%). For type Ⅰ, there were three subtypes, including type Ⅰa: longitudinal tear (n=53, 61.6%), type Ⅰb: horizontal tear (n=27, 31.4%), and type Ⅰc: radial tear (n=6, 7.0%). For type Ⅱ, there were also three subtypes, including type Ⅱa: anterosuperior popliteomeniscal fascicle tear (n=5, 13.9%), type Ⅱb: posterosuperior popliteomeniscal fascicle tear (n=20, 55.6%), and type Ⅱc: both tears (n=11, 30.6%). For type Ⅲ, there were two subtypes, including type Ⅲa: horizontal tear (n=9, 37.5%), type Ⅲb: radial tear (n=15, 62.5%). In the follow-up for an average of 15.3±2.6 months, all the patients had done well with significantly improved Lysholm (84.6±14.3) and IKDC (83.2±12.8) scores at the end of the last follow-up relative to preoperative scores (P > 0.01). CONCLUSION: We propose that it is possible to classify lateral meniscus tears at the popliteal hiatus region for three types, which can summarize the injury characteristics of this area. The arthroscopic all-inside repair with suture hook for the PHLM tears can avoid stitching to popliteal tendon or narrowing popliteal hiatus and have satisfactory clinical results.

ABSTRACT

Tree trunk cankers represent serious fungal diseases that pose significant threats to Chinese hickory trees (Carya cathayensis). To characterize the pathogen diversity associated with this disease, tissues were collected between 2016 and 2018 from the primary Chinese hickory plantation regions. A total of 97 cultures were isolated from trees in six towns (Longgang, Qingliangfeng, Changhua, Tuankou, Taiyang Town, and Lin'an urban area) within the Linan district, where 60% of Chinese hickory tree yields originate. The isolated cultures caused cankers on Chinese hickory tree branches, but infections did not occur on fruits or leaves under tested conditions. Combined morphological observations and phylogenetic analysis of multiple genes (ITS, ß-tubulin, and EF) indicated that five Botryosphaeriaceae species were recovered, including 89 isolates of Botryosphaeria dothidea, 4 isolates of Botryosphaeriaceae fabicerciana, 1 isolate of Botryosphaeriaceae qingyuanensis, 1 isolate of Botryosphaeriaceae corticis, and two isolates of Lasiodiplodia theobromae. B. dothidea was the most prevalent, and this is the first report of B. corticis, B. qingyuanensis, and L. theobromae infections in Chinese hickory trees. We investigated the mycelial growth, spore germination, and pathogenicity of these species at different temperatures. L. theobromae grew the fastest and B. cortices grew the slowest on potato dextrose agar. The optimum temperature of spore germination for all species was 30°C. L. theobromae was the most virulent species, followed by B. dothidea and B. qingyuanensis, then B. fabicerciana, and finally B. cortices. These new insights into fungal pathogen diversity provide critical new information to understand and manage tree trunk cankers of Chinese hickory.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the effect and specific mechanism of heat shock protein 47 (HSP47) on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM). Methods: A mouse model of type 1 diabetic cardiomyopathy was established by intraperitoneal injection of STZ. After 8 weeks of successful modeling, HSP47 was overexpressed by tail vein injection, and the heart of the mouse was harvested after 6 weeks. Hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining and Sirius red (PSR) staining were used to detect the cross-sectional area of myocardial cells and myocardial fibrosis, respectively. Immunofluorescence staining with α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and collagen Ⅰ was used to detect the degree of fibrosis activation. The expression level of fibrosis-related proteins was determined by Western blot. Results: The expression level of HSP47 in the myocardium of the diabetic group up-regulated (2.014±0.264 vs 1.004±0.064, P<0.001). The area of myocardial cells in the diabetic group was increased compared with the control group [(235.3±20.7) µm(2) vs (172.8±13.6) µm(2), P<0.001] and the cross-sectional area of myocardial cells in the HSP47 overexpression-diabetes group was further increased [(302.2±41.0) µm(2) vs (235.3±20.7) µm(2), P=0.009], while the mRNA levels of mouse cardiac hypertrophic markers atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), type B brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), myosin heavy chain ß (ß-MHC) further upregulated (all P<0.001). Compared with the control group, the myocardial fibrosis content in the diabetic group increased [(7.333±1.127)% vs (4.837±0.775)%, P=0.002] and the left ventricular fibrosis content of the HSP47 overexpressing diabetic group further increased [(9.175±1.008)% vs (7.333±1.127)%, P=0.025] and the mRNA levels of fibrosis index collagenⅠ, collagen Ⅲ, connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) and transforming growth factor ß (TGFß) further up-regulated (all P<0.001). Immunofluorescence results showed that compared with the control group, the expression of collagenⅠ up-regulated in the endothelial stroma of the diabetic group and the content of collagenⅠ in the HSP47 over-expressing diabetic group was higher (P<0.001). Western blot results indicated that the phosphorylation level of Smad3 and the protein levels of α-SMA and TGFß in HSP47 overexpressing diabetic group increased, compared with those of diabetic group (all P<0.001). Conclusion: HSP47 ameliorates STZ-induced diabetic myocardial fibrosis by activating the TGFß/Smad3 signaling pathway.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Toobserve the damage effects of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection on hematopoietic cells and to investigate the clinical significance. Methods: (1) ELISA assay wasused to detect IL-17 and IFN-γ levels in the peripheral blood serum of 36 patients on pretherapy and posttherapy. (2) Changes of peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets were detected by FACS. (3) Cytological observation of cervical lymph nodes was executed by needle aspiration cytology. (4) Cellular immunochemistry and immunofluorescence staining were performed to observe the POX release, HLA-DR expression, IL-17A and IFN-γ secretion-like expression status of activated immune cells in the bone marrow hematopoietic microenvironment. Serum samples from healthy individuals were used as controls. Bone marrow smears from patients without iron deficiency anemia were compared as bone marrow immunostaining. Results: (1) Serum levels of IL-17 and IFN-γ were significantly increased in CMV-infected patients [IL-17 (48.23±3.86) ng/L vs (20.16±1.05) ng/L,respectively; IFN-γ (40.16±3.11) vs (8.17±1.92) ng/L,P<0.01]. (2) The proportion of CD16+/CD56+NK cells was significantly increased in patients [(43.54±6.01)% vs (14.01±3.25)%, P<0.01]. The proportion of CD3+CD4+T and CD3+CD8+T cells decreased,(20.91±53.15)% vs (35.10±4.88)%, and (15.41±5.13)% vs (25.11±3.92)%,respectively,P<0.05. (3) Large numbers of abnormal lymphocytes and macrophages (MΦ) that engulf large quantities of CMV inclusion bodies were observed in bone marrow and lymph nodes. CMV infected and destroied the hematopoietic cells of various lines in the bone marrow. The activated MΦ phagocytizedthe CMV inclusion bodies and also phagocytosed CMV-infected blood cells. (4) Activated MΦ in bone marrow hematopoietic microenvironment released POX strongly positive, highly expressed class Ⅱ HLA-DR, and highly expressed inflammatory factors IL-17A and IFN-γ. (5) Twenty-twopatients with elevated WBC were treated with ganciclovir combined with antibiotics for 2 weeks after the disappearance of the foci, WBC counts and CMV-IgM levels of 16 cases were reduced to normal.Six patients with CMV who were not turned negative were tprolonged, and the granulocyte and/or platelet counts fell below normal range. Fourteenpatients withreduced granulocyte or platelet count, CMV-IgM levels were slow descend, and the ganciclovir treated more than 4 weeks. Conclusions: CMV can infect hematopoietic bone marrow nucleated blood cells and destroy hematopoiesis. NK and MΦ cells are important effector cells against CMV infection. Activated macrophages are dual in nature, they can engulf CMV virus and virus-infected blood cells, and also aggravate bone marrow immune damage by releasing inflammatory factors such as POX and IL-17A and IFN-γ.

ABSTRACT

We report the performance enhancement of AlGaN-based deep ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (DUV LEDs) using AlGaN nanoporous template (NPT). The NPT was fabricated by the electrochemical etching method and served as the dislocation filtering layer and strain relieving layer. The n-AlGaN laterally regrown on NPT showed reduced dislocation density and mitigated compressive strain comparing with that on the as-grown template (AGT). A 23% improvement of internal quantum efficiency was achieved for the multiple quantum wells thereon. Moreover, the nanopores in the NPT transformed into elongated air voids during high temperature growth process, which could facilitate the escaping of photons by scattering and thus improve the light extraction efficiency. As a consequence, the DUV LED based on NPT demonstrated an increase of the light outpower by 50% at 20 mA than that on AGT.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To study the effect of adult tobacco use after the implementation of an intervention program, in Zhejiang province from 2010 to 2013. Methods: A total of 2 000 residents aged 15-69 years from 15 counties were selected, using a stratified multi-stage cluster sampling method and a face to face interview on questionnaire, in 2010 and 2013. Intervention program was then implemented. Results: The current smoking prevalence rates were 25.77% and 25.64% respectively in the above-said two years. Comparing data gathered from the 15-69 year olds in Zhejiang province in 2010 and 2013, no statistically significant differences were found in male population, in the 45-64 age group, in the rural population, and in the junior middle school students, regarding the current smoking prevalence rates. 42.11% and 40.56% of the current daily smokers started daily smoking within 30 minutes after waking up in the morning, in 2010 and 2013, and the difference was not significant. Conclusion: Prevalence of smoking in males in Zhejiang remained high, suggesting that publicity and education intervention methods of tobacco control should be effectively improved.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the underlying mechanism of cinnamaldehyde attenuating pressure overload-induced cardiac fibrosis. Methods: The mice were randomly divided into control group, model group and treatment group by random number table and each group had 8 mice.Cardiac hypertrophy was induced by aortic banding. Heart vascular density was detected by immunohistochemical staining of CD31.The expression level of stromal cells marker α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) was detected by immunofluorescence staining in different groups. The expression levels of endothelial cell associated markers and stromal cell associated markers were detected by using Western blotting. The possible molecular pathway was also screened by using Western blotting. Human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVECs) were stimulated with TGFß1 and cultured with 10 nmol/L cinnamomum for 24 hour to further confirm the mechanism. Results: Eight weeks after operation, the vascular density was significantly decreased in model group mice heart. The expressions of stromal cells markers were increased (α-SMA: 2.57±0.38; Vimentin: 0.58±0.02) and endothelial cell markers were reduced (CD31: 0.58±0.29; CD34: 0.62±0.21). While cinnamicaldehyde treatment significantly increased the mouse heart vascular density, increased endothelial cell markers expression (CD31: 1.51±0.11; CD34: 2.37±0.44; P<0.05), and reduced stromal cells marker expression (α-SMA: 1.22±0.14; Vimentin: 0.35±0.03; P<0.05). Further studies showed that the anti-fibrosis effect of cinnamicaldehyde was mainly through the TGFß /smad signaling pathway.10 nmol/L cinnamomum attenuated TGFß1 induced endothelial mesenchymal transition in HUVECs. Conclusion: Cinnamaldehyde may be able to retard the progression of cardiac fibrosis, via blocking endothelial to mesenchymal transition, which, in verse, is through regulating TGFß /smad signaling pathway.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore the application value of assisted laparoscopic ultrasound in myomectomy. Methods: One hundred and fifty six patients who underwent myomectomy in Beijing Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital from 2011 to 2013 were enrolled. The patients were randomly divided into laparoscopic ultrasound guided group (n=57), laparoscopic group (n=54) and open resection group (n=45). The patients were followed up to calculate the residue and recurrence rates of uterine fibroids by vaginal ultrasound at 6th month and 12th-18th month after the operation. The residual and recurrence rates of the three methods were calculated and compared. Results: The recurrence rate of laparoscopic ultrasound guided group wassignificantly lower than that of laparoscopic group and open resection group (P<0.01) and (P<0.01). The residual rate of laparoscopic ultrasound guided group was also lower than that of laparoscopic group(P<0.05). However, there was no difference between the residual rates of laparoscopic ultrasound guided group and open resection group (P>0.05). When compared with open resection group, no difference was found in the residual and recurrence rates of laparoscopic group. The number of myoma was proportional to the residual rate and the recurrence rate. When the number of the myoma was more than 10, most of the cases existed residue. Conclusion: The application of assisted laparoscopic ultrasound in myomectomy couldreduce the residual and recurrence rate of uterine fibroids.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the understanding of infectious diseases, their prevention, and control, and the factors influencing this literacy among urban and rural residents of Zhejiang Province. Methods: In November- December 2014, a multistage stratified cluster sampling questionnaire was administered at study sites in eight districts of Zhejiang province: Hangzhou city Gongshu district, Hangzhou city Chun'an county, Wenzhou city Cangnan county, Dongyang city, Jiaxing city Jiashan county, Zhoushan city Putuo district, Linhai city, Lishui city Jinyun county. The inclusion criteria were: 15-60 years old, living locally for more than six continuous months, and no mental illness. The exclusion criteria were: foreigner residing locally, resident of Hong Kong, Macau, or Taiwan, or unable to communicate through speech or writing. In this study, 4 091 questionnaires were distributed, and 4 020 valid questionnaires were returned(98.26%). Health literacy regarding infectious diseases was measured at five levels: knowledge, skills, behaviors, access to information, and understanding of the prevention of infectious diseases. A total score was calculated for each questionnaire, and a total score of ≥80 was deemed to indicate an understanding of the prevention of infectious diseases. A χ2 test was used to compare the levels of health literacy in different populations with single-factor analyses, and a multivariate unconditional logistic regression model was used to analyze the factors affecting infectious diseases prevention and treatment literacy levels. Results: Of the 4 020 respondents(aged(43.84 ± 10.28)years), 1 964 were male(48.86%)and 2 056 were female(51.14%). In the total surveyed population, 15.17%(n=610)understood the prevention of infectious diseases, 294 were male(14.97%)and 316 were female(15.37%)(χ2=2.48, P=0.115). When the participants in the different age groups were analyzed, 23.11%, 20.29%, 13.27%, and 11.04% of those aged 18- 29(n=116), 30- 39(n= 166), 40- 49(n=178), and ≥50 years(n=150), respectively, understood infectious disease prevention(χ2= 63.16, P<0.001). When the participants were analyzed according to education, 46.01%, 24.86%, 12.03%, 5.27%, or 2.39% of those educated at university(n=167), at high school/vocational school/college(n=175), at middle school(n=215), at elementary school(n=46), or who were illiterate/slightly literate(n=7), respectively, understood infectious disease prevention(χ2=436.67, P<0.001). Among the urban(n=336)and rural participants(n=274), 18.98% and 12.18% understood infectious disease prevention, respectively(χ2= 35.57, P<0.001), so the urban residents had better health literacy than rural residents(OR=1.28, 95% CI= 1.06- 1.54), and those aged 18- 29 or 30- 39 years had even better health literacy than the rural residents(OR=1.39, 95%CI=1.01-1.91). When the health literacy levels of migrant workers were compared with those of agency/institutional personnel, business people, unemployed, and retirees, the OR(95% CI)values were 2.52(1.82-3.49), 1.69(1.24-2.30), 2.99(1.65-5.39), and 2.43(1.59-3.72), respectively. When the illiterate/slightly literate were compared with those educated at university, high school/vocational school/secondary school, and junior high school, the OR(95%CI)values were 35.11(15.73-78.36), 13.31(6.11-28.99), and 5.37(2.48-11.62), respectively. Conclusion: Limited levels of health literacy are common among the residents of Zhejiang Province. Lower education level, older age, and rural residence were predictors of low health literacy in this study.

ABSTRACT

Mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase kinase 5 (MAP3K5) is essential for apoptosis, proliferation, differentiation, and immune responses, and is a candidate marker for residual feed intake (RFI) in pig. We cloned the full-length cDNA sequence of porcine MAP3K5 by rapid-amplification of cDNA ends. The 5451-bp gene contains a 5'-untranslated region (UTR) (718 bp), a coding region (3738 bp), and a 3'-UTR (995 bp), and encodes a peptide of 1245 amino acids, which shares 97, 99, 97, 93, 91, and 84% sequence identity with cattle, sheep, human, mouse, chicken, and zebrafish MAP3K5, respectively. The deduced MAP3K5 protein sequence contains two conserved domains: a DUF4071 domain and a protein kinase domain. Phylogenetic analysis showed that porcine MAP3K5 forms a separate branch to vicugna and camel MAP3K5. Tissue expression analysis using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) revealed that MAP3K5 was expressed in the heart, liver, spleen, lung, kidney, muscle, fat, pancrea, ileum, and stomach tissues. Copy number variation was detected for porcine MAP3K5 and validated by qRT-PCR. Furthermore, a significant increase in average copy number was detected in the low RFI group when compared to the high RFI group in a Duroc pig population. These results provide useful information regarding the influence of MAP3K5 on RFI in pigs.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To describe the prevalence of tobacco use among teenagers in different populations by sex and grades at school, and to provide evidence for the development of smoking control and health promotion programs. METHODS: A total of 4 797 teenagers selected from 36 schools through stratified multi-stage cluster sampling in Zhejiang province and were surveyed by using a questionnaire with 3 886 eligible ones for analysis. Indicators as tried smoking, current smoking, and secondhand smoke exposure, etc., were calculated by weight on age proportions from the numbers of juniors in Zhejiang province. RESULTS: Prevalence rates of tried smoking and current smoking among teenagers were 10.91% and 2.07%, respectively. 7.72% of the juniors were susceptible to future tobacco use. The prevalence rates of tried smoking were 15.65% for boys and 5.58% for girls, 12.13% in rural and 9.24% in urban areas. Students from the 9(th) grade showed the highest rate (15.15%) while the 7(th) graders appeared the lowest level of susceptibility to future tobacco use (5.22%). The highest level of current smoking was seen in the group of " weekly allowance more than 30 Yuan, from parents"(4.07%). The prevalence of secondhand exposure to smoke in outdoor and indoor places, public transport, or at home were 57.60%, 54.45%, 46.97%, and 43.16%, respectively, among the teenagers. 3 071 juniors (77.33%) saw the smoking scenes in the past 30 days but only 1 367 juniors (28.30%) were aware of the basic knowledge on tobaccos in class, in the past 12 months. CONCLUSIONS: There were juniors who tried to smoke or were current smokers. The rate of secondhand exposure to smoking was high. A large number of the juniors were lack of education on knowledge related to tobacco control, in the classroom. It was important to promote and publicize the knowledge on tobacco so as to reduce the number of teenagers who were susceptible to future tobacco use.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUNDS: The present study aimed to evaluate benefit of hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAI) combined with systemic chemotherapy (SCT) for patients with colorectal liver metastases (CLMs) in a palliative setting. METHODS: This was a retrospective single-center study including 43 consecutive patients with CLM after failure of standard SCT. Among them, 20 (47 %) patients underwent HAI combined with SCT (Group A) and 23 historical control patients who had received SCT with or without targeted agent treatment (Group B). RESULTS: The two groups had similar characteristics. Compared with SCT alone, HAI combined with SCT prolonged survival (median 19.8 vs. 9.0 months; P = 0.045). Median hepatic progression-free survival was significantly longer for HAI combined with SCT vs. SCT alone (median 8.1 vs. 4.7 months; P = 0.027), as were response rates (25 and 0 %; P = 0.038) and progression-free survival (median 5.7 vs. 3.0 months; P = 0.02). Three patients (15 %) achieved conversion to potentially curative surgery. Grade 3/4 toxicities for Group A and Group B were neutropenia (5 and 8.7 %, respectively), anemia (5 and 0 %, respectively), and hyperbilirubinemia (0 and 4.3 %, respectively). Other complications were mostly grade 1 or 2. CONCLUSIONS: HAI combined with SCT treatment can improve overall survival compared with SCT alone in highly advanced CLM refractory to intravenous chemotherapy.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Cardiac hypertrophy is an adaptive process of the heart in response to various stimuli, but sustained cardiac hypertrophy will finally lead to heart failure. Sulforaphane-extracted from cruciferous vegetables of the genus Brassica such as broccoli, brussels sprouts, and cabbage-has been evaluated for its anticarcinogenic and antioxidant effects. AIMS: To investigate the effect of sulforaphane on angiotensin II (Ang II)-induced cardiac hypertrophy in vitro. METHODS: Embryonic rat heart-derived H9c2 cells were co-incubated with sulforaphane and Ang II. The cell surface area and mRNA levels of hypertrophic markers were measured to clarify the effect of sulforaphane on cardiac hypertrophy. The underlying mechanism was further investigated by detecting the activation of Akt and NF-κB signaling pathways. RESULTS: We found that H9c2 cells pretreated with sulforaphane were protected from Ang II-induced hypertrophy. The increasing mRNA levels of ANP, BNP, and ß-MHC in Ang II-stimulated cells were also down-regulated after sulforaphane treatment. Moreover, sulforaphane repressed the Ang II-induced phosphorylation of Akt, GSK3ß, mTOR, eIF4e, as well as of IκBα and NF-κB. CONCLUSION: Based on our results, sulforaphane attenuates Ang II-induced hypertrophy of H9c2 cardiomyocytes mediated by the inhibition of intracellular signaling pathways including Akt and NF-κB.
