ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is a common autoimmune skin disease. Capsaicin has been found to exert a positive effect on vitiligo treatment, and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are also confirmed to be an ideal cell type. This study aimed to explore the influence of capsaicin combined with stem cells on the treatment of vitiligo and to confirm the molecular mechanism of capsaicin combined with stem cells in treating vitiligo. METHODS AND RESULTS: PIG3V cell proliferation and apoptosis were detected using CCK-8 and TUNEL assays, MitoSOX Red fluorescence staining was used to measure the mitochondrial ROS level, and JC-1 staining was used to detect the mitochondrial membrane potential. The expression of related genes and proteins was detected using RT‒qPCR and Western blotting. Coimmunoprecipitation was used to analyze the protein interactions between HSP70 and TLR4 or between TLR4 and mTOR. The results showed higher expression of HSP70 in PIG3V cells than in PIG1 cells. The overexpression of HSP70 reduced the proliferation of PIG3V cells, promoted apoptosis, and aggravated mitochondrial dysfunction and autophagy abnormalities. The expression of HSP70 could be inhibited by capsaicin combined with MSCs, which increased the levels of Tyr, Tyrp1 and DCT, promoted the proliferation of PIG3V cells, inhibited apoptosis, activated autophagy, and improved mitochondrial dysfunction. In addition, capsaicin combined with MSCs regulated the expression of TLR4 through HSP70 and subsequently affected the mTOR/FAK signaling pathway CONCLUSIONS: Capsaicin combined with MSCs inhibits TLR4 through HSP70, and the mTOR/FAK signaling pathway is inhibited to alleviate mitochondrial dysfunction and autophagy abnormalities in PIG3V cells.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To examine the bi-directorial association between diversified leisure activity participation and cognitive function over a 7-year period. METHODS: Data analyzed was from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), a large-scale longitudinal national study. The baseline survey was conducted in 2011 with follow-up every three years. We traced a total of 2718 participants over a period of 7 years. We used adjusted random intercept cross-lagged panel models (RI-CLPMs) to examine the bi-directorial associations between diversified leisure activity participation and cognitive function. RESULTS: We observed bi-directorial associations between diversity of leisure activity and cognitive function across waves at the between-person and within-person levels. The adjusted random intercept cross-lagged panel models fitted the data appropriately, and the 3-year cross-lagged effects of prior diversified leisure activity participation on cognitive function (ß = 0.058, p < 0.01) and cognitive function on subsequent diversified leisure activity participation (ß = 0.047, p < 0.05) were significant. The results remained after adjusting the model for baseline sex, age, educational level, marital status and current residence, the number of chronic diseases, ADL, depressive symptoms, sleep quality, smoking, and drinking. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that a reciprocal causality relationship between diversified leisure activity participation and cognitive function, indicating a "positive circle" that further promotes cognition over time.

ABSTRACT

Exposure to PM2.5, a harmful type of air pollution, has been associated with compromised male reproductive health; however, it remains unclear whether such exposure can elicit transgenerational effects on male fertility. Here, we aim to examine the effect of paternal exposure to real-world PM2.5 on the reproductive health of male offspring. We have observed that paternal exposure to real-world PM2.5 can lead to transgenerational primary hypogonadism in a sex-selective manner, and we have also confirmed this phenotype by using an external model. Mechanically, we have identified small RNAs (sRNAs) that play a critical role in mediating these transgenerational effects. Specifically, miR6240 and piR016061, which are present in F0 PM sperm, regulate intergenerational transmission by targeting Lhcgr and Nsd1, respectively. We have also uncovered that piR033435 and piR006695 indirectly regulate F1 PM sperm methylation by binding to the 3'-untranslated region of Tet1 mRNA. The reduced expression of Tet1 resulted in hypermethylation of several testosterone synthesis genes, including Lhcgr and Gnas, impaired Leydig cell function and ultimately led to transgenerational primary hypogonadism. Our findings provide insights into the mechanisms underlying the transgenerational effects of paternal PM2.5 exposure on reproductive health, highlighting the crucial role played by sRNAs in mediating these effects. The findings underscore the significance of paternal pre-conception interventions in alleviating the adverse effects of environmental pollutants on reproductive health.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown that lack of leisure activities, either outdoor or social activities, impedes cognitive function. However, the interrelationship between poor cognition and deficient activities is understudied. In addition, whether exposure to air pollution, such as PM2.5, can accelerate the detrimental 'inactivity-poor cognition' cycle, is worthy of investigation. METHODS: We used data from the 2008, 2011, 2014, and 2018 waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). We assessed the frequency of outdoor or social activities at each wave. The cognitive function was examined using a China-Modified Mini-mental State Examination. We estimated the residential exposure to fine particular matter (PM2.5) via a satellite-based model. We applied cross-lagged panel (CLP) model to examine the bi-directional relationship between outdoor or social activities and cognitive function. We then examined the effect of PM2.5 exposure with sequent cognitive function and activities using generalized estimation equation (GEE) model. FINDINGS: Overall, we observed significant bi-directional associations between outdoor or social activities and cognitive function. Participants with better cognitive function in the last wave were more likely to engage in outdoor or social activities in the following wave (outdoor activities: ß = 0.37, 95% CI [0.27,0.48], P < 0.01; social activities: ß = 0.05, 95% CI [0.02,0.09] P < 0.01). Meanwhile, higher engagement in outdoor or social activities in the last wave was associated with more favorable cognitive function in the following wave (outdoor activities: ß = 0.06, 95% CI [0.03,0.09], P < 0.01; social activities: ß = 0.10, 95% CI [0.03,0.18], P < 0.01). Notably, an increase in PM2.5 exposure during the preceding year was significantly associated with a declining cognitive function (ß = -0.05, 95% CI [-0.08,-0.03], P < 0.01), outdoor activities (ß = -0.02, 95% CI [-0.04, -0.01], P < 0.01) and social activities (ß = -0.02, 95% CI [-0.02, -0.01], P < 0.01) in the current year; the lagged effects of the PM2.5 exposure in the past year of the last wave on activities and cognitive function of the following wave were also observed. INTERPRETATION: Our findings not only indicate the bi-directional links between the frequency of outdoor or social activities and cognitive function, but also report that PM2.5 exposure plays a role in catalyzing the detrimental inactivity-poor cognition cycle. Future research should investigate whether the policy-driven interventions, such as clean air policies, can break the unfavorable activity-cognition cycle, and thereby promoting health from the dual gains in leisure activities and cognition.

ABSTRACT

Generalizing out-of-distribution (OoD) is critical but challenging in real applications such as unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) flight control. Previous machine learning-based control has shown promise in dealing with complex real-world environments but suffers huge performance degradation facing OoD scenarios, posing risks to the stability and safety of UAVs. In this paper, we found that the introduced random noises during training surprisingly yield theoretically guaranteed performances via a proposed functional optimization framework. More encouragingly, this framework does not involve common Lyapunov assumptions used in this field, making it more widely applicable. With this framework, the upperbound for control error is induced. We also proved that the induced random noises can lead to lower OoD control errors. Based on our theoretical analysis, we further propose OoD-Control to generalize control in unseen environments. Numerical experiments demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm, surpassing previous state-of-the-art by 65% under challenging unseen environments. We further extend to outdoor real-world experiments and found that the control error is reduced by 50% approximately.

OBJECTIVE: Both piperine and a 308-nm excimer laser have significant curative effects on vitiligo. This study mainly explored the molecular mechanism of a 308-nm excimer combined with piperine in regulating melanocyte proliferation. METHODS: Epidermal melanocytes were cultured in piperine solution, and the cells were irradiated by an XTRAC excimer laser treatment system at 308-nm output monochromatic light. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and Western blot were for detecting the expression levels of genes or proteins. The 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) and Transwell method was for assessing cell viability and migration capacity. The content of melanin was also detected. RESULTS: The combination of the 308-nm excimer laser and piperine enhanced the cell proliferation, migration, and melanin production of melanocytes and upregulated the level of miR-328, and restraint of miR-328 reversed the influence of the 308-nm excimer laser and piperine. Secreted frizzled-related protein 1 (SFRP1) is a direct target gene of miR-328, and miR-328 can inhibit the expression of SFRP1 and elevate the protein level of the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway. CONCLUSION: The 308-nm excimer laser combined with piperine may be more efficient than piperine alone in the remedy of vitiligo, and the miR-328/SFRP1 and Wnt/ß-catenin pathways are participated in the proliferation, migration, and melanin synthesis of melanocytes.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a highly heterogeneous cancer. This heterogeneity has an impact on the efficacy of immunotherapy. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been found to play regulatory functions in cancer immunity. However, the global landscape of immune-derived lncRNA signatures has not yet been explored in colorectal cancer. METHODS: In this study, we applied DESeq2 to identify differentially expressed lncRNAs in colon cancer. Next, we performed an integrative analysis to globally identify immune-driven lncRNA markers in CRC, including immune-associated pathways, tumor immunogenomic features, tumor-infiltrating immune cells, immune checkpoints, microsatellite instability (MSI) and tumor mutation burden (TMB). RESULTS: We also identified dysregulated lncRNAs, such as LINC01354 and LINC02257, and their clinical relevance in CRC. Our findings revealed that the differentially expressed lncRNAs were closely associated with immune pathways. In addition, we found that RP11-354P11.3 and RP11-545G3.1 had the highest association with the immunogenomic signature. As a result, these signatures could serve as markers to assess immunogenomic activity in CRC. Among the immune cells, resting mast cells and M0 macrophages had the highest association with lncRNAs in CRC. The AC006129.2 gene was significantly associated with several immune checkpoints, for example, programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) and B and T lymphocyte attenuator (BTLA). Therefore, the AC006129.2 gene could be targeted to regulate the condition of immune cells or immune checkpoints to enhance the efficacy of immunotherapy in CRC patients. Finally, we identified 15 immune-related lncRNA-generated open reading frames (ORFs) corresponding to 15 cancer immune epitopes. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, we provided a genome-wide immune-driven lncRNA signature for CRC that might provide new insights into clinical applications and immunotherapy.

Emerging studies have demonstrated spinal microglia play a critical role in central sensitization and contribute to chronic pain. Although several mediators that contribute to microglia activation have been identified, the mechanism of microglia activation and its functionally diversified mechanisms in pathological pain are still unclear. Here we report that injured sensory neurons-derived Galectin-3 (Gal3) activates and reprograms microglia in the spinal dorsal horn (SDH) and contributes to neuropathic pain. Firstly, Gal3 is predominantly expressed in the isolectin B4 (IB4)-positive non-peptidergic sensory neurons and significantly up-regulated in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons and primary afferent terminals in SDH in the partial sciatic nerve ligation (pSNL)-induced neuropathic pain model. Gal3 knockout (Gal3 KO) mice showed a significant decrease in mechanical allodynia and Gal3 inhibitor TD-139 produced a significant anti-allodynia effect in the pSNL model. Furthermore, pSNL-induced microgliosis was compromised in Gal3 KO mice. Additionally, intrathecal injection of Gal3 produces remarkable mechanical allodynia by direct activation of microglia, which have enhanced inflammatory responses with TNF-α and IL-1ß up-regulation. Thirdly, using single-nuclear RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq), we identified that Gal3 targets microglia and induces reprogramming of microglia, which may contribute to neuropathic pain establishment. Finally, Gal3 enhances excitatory synaptic transmission in excitatory neurons in the SDH via microglia activation. Our findings reveal that injured sensory neurons-derived Gal3 programs microglia in the SDH and contribute to neuropathic pain.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Since December 2019, the emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, which gave rise to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has considerably impacted global health. The identification of effective anticoronavirus peptides (ACVPs) and the establishment of robust data storage methods are critical in the fight against COVID-19. Traditional wet-lab peptide discovery approaches are time-- consuming and labor-intensive. With advancements in computer technology and bioinformatics, machine learning has gained prominence in the extraction of functional peptides from extensive datasets. METHODS: In this study, we comprehensively review data resources and predictors related to ACVPs published over the past two decades. In addition, we analyze the influence of various factors on model performance. RESULTS: We have reviewed nine ACVP-containing databases, which integrate detailed information on protein fragments effective against coronaviruses, providing crucial references for the development of antiviral drugs and vaccines. Additionally, we have assessed 15 peptide predictors for antiviral or specifically anticoronavirus activity. These predictors employ computational models to swiftly screen potential antiviral candidates, offering an efficient pathway for drug development. CONCLUSION: Our study provides conclusive results and insights into the performance of different computational methods, and sheds light on the future trajectory of bioinformatics tools for ACVPs. This work offers a representative overview of contributions to the field, with an emphasis on the crucial role of ACVPs in combating COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

1,2-Azaborines represent a unique class of benzene isosteres that have attracted interest for developing pharmaceuticals with better potency and bioavailability. However, it remains a long-standing challenge to prepare monocyclic 1,2-azaborines, particularly multi-substituted ones, in an efficient and modular manner. Here we report a straightforward method to directly access diverse multi-substituted 1,2-azaborines from readily available cyclopropyl imines/ketones and dibromoboranes under relatively mild conditions. The reaction is scalable, shows a broad substrate scope, and tolerates a range of functional groups. The utility of this method is demonstrated in the concise syntheses of BN isosteres of a PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitor and pyrethroid insecticide, bifenthrin. Combined experimental and computational mechanistic studies suggest that the reaction pathway involves boron-mediated cyclopropane ring-opening and base-mediated elimination, followed by an unusual low-barrier 6π-electrocyclization accelerated by the BN/CC isomerism. This method is anticipated to find applications for the synthesis of BN-isostere analogues in medicinal chemistry, and the mechanistic insights gained here may guide developing other boron-mediated electrocyclizations.

Distance learning programs in sustainability science provide a structured curriculum that covers various aspects of sustainability. Despite the growing recognition of distance learning in higher education, existing literature has primarily focused on specific and detailed factors, without a comprehensive summary of the global themes, especially neglecting in-depth exploration of poor engagement factors. This study bridged this gap by not only examining detailed factors but also synthesizing the overarching themes that influenced student engagement. The aim of this study was to investigate the factors that impact student engagement in distance learning within higher education institutions across different countries. By developing a theoretical framework, three key aspects of student engagement in higher education were identified. A total of 42 students and 2 educators affiliated with universities participated in semi-structured interviews. The findings of this paper indicated that sociocultural, infrastructure, and digital equity factors were the main influencing factors of student engagement. Furthermore, a student engagement assessment system was developed using machine learning algorithms to identify students with low levels of engagement and conduct further analysis that considers the three aforementioned factors. The proposed automated approach holds the potential to enhance and revolutionize digital learning methodologies.

Petroleum microorganisms play a crucial role in the application of microbial-enhanced oil recovery, and the community structures of petroleum microorganisms have been widely studied. Due to variations in reservoir geological conditions, reservoir microbial communities exhibit unique characteristics. However, previous studies have primarily focused on microbial community changes within a single well, a single block, and before and after water flooding, and thus, cross-horizon and cross-regional comparative studies of in situ microbial communities are lacking. In this study, the 16S rRNA full-length sequencing method was adopted to study bacterial communities in crude oil samples taken from two wells at the same depths (depths of 2425 m and 2412 m) but approximately 20 km apart in the Hujianshan oilfield, located in the Ordos Basin. At the same time, the results were combined with another layer of research data from another article (from a depth of 2140 m). The aim was to compare the differences in the microbial community structures between the oil wells on a horizontal scale and a vertical scale. The results revealed that there were minimal differences in the microbial community structures that were influenced by the horizontal distances within a small range (<20 km), while differences were observed at a larger spatial scale. However, the dominant bacteria (Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes) in the different oilfields were similar. Vertical depth variations (>300 m) had significant impacts on the communities, and this was mainly controlled by temperature. The greater the depth, the higher formation temperature, leading to an increase in thermophilic and anaerobic bacteria within a community.

Purpose: Uncorrected hyperopic children must overcome an apparent conflict between accommodation and vergence demands to focus and align their retinal images. This study tested hypotheses about simultaneous accommodation and vergence performance of young hyperopes to gain insight into ocular motor strategies used to maintain eye alignment. Methods: Simultaneous eccentric photorefraction and Purkinje image tracking were used to assess accommodative and vergence responses of 26 adult emmetropes (AE) and 94 children (0-13 years) viewing cartoons. Children were habitually uncorrected (CU) (spherical equivalent refractive error [SE] -0.5 to +4 D), corrected and aligned (CCA), or corrected with a history of refractive esotropia (CCS). Accommodative and vergence accuracy, dissociated heterophoria, and vergence/accommodation ratios in the absence of retinal disparity cues were measured for 33- and 80-cm viewing distances. Results: In binocular viewing, median accommodative lags for 33 cm were 1.0 D (AE), 1.33 D (CU), 1.25 D (CCA), and 1.0 D (CCS). Median exophorias at 80 and 33 cm were 1.2 and 4.5 pd (AE), 0.8 and 2.5 pd (CU), and 0 and 1.2 pd (CCA), respectively. Without disparity cues, most response vergence/accommodation ratios were between 1 and 2 meter angle/D (∼5-10 pd/D) (69% of AE, 44% of CU, 60% of CCA, and 50% of CCS). Conclusions: Despite apparent conflict in motor coupling, uncorrected hyperopes were typically exophoric and achieved adultlike accuracy of both vergence and accommodation simultaneously, indicating ability to compensate for conflicting demands rather than bias to accurate vergence while tolerating inaccurate accommodation. Large lags and esophoria are therefore atypical. This analysis provides normative guidelines for clinicians and a deeper mechanistic understanding of how hyperopes avoid strabismus.

ABSTRACT

Performance evaluation of microorganisms that have emulsifying and degrading effects on crude oil has been extensively conducted in the laboratory. However, the ultimate goal of microbial enhanced oil recovery is field application, so the pilot simulation experiments are crucial. In this study, a micro-visualization model and the real cores were chosen to investigate the actual recovery efficiency and the mechanism of the consortium bacteria B-ALL, which has been proven to have good emulsification and degradation effects in lab studies in porous media. At the same time, the cast thin sections and rate-controlled porosimetry were combined to analyze the pore throat structure of the displacement core. It was found that the recovery efficiency was positively correlated with the microbial injection volume as well as the incubation time. For the microscopic model with high pores and high permeability, the efficiency of secondary water flooding can be increased by 44.77% after six days of incubation with two pore volume microbes. For the real tight cores, the maximum secondary water flooding efficiency under the same condition was 6.98%. Through visual modeling, microorganisms increase the oil washing efficiency mainly by emulsification and changing the wettability. The generated oil droplets will play a role in plugging and improving the wave efficiency. However, tight reservoirs have the characteristics of large pores and small throats, and curved and necking throats are developed, greatly reducing permeability. The microbial recovery efficiency was lower under shorter cultivation times. This study provides a practical basis for the application of consortium bacteria in tight oil fields to enhance recovery.

BACKGROUND: Avian infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), a coronavirus, causes a huge economic loss to the poultry industry. Andrographolide (APL) is a compound with a variety of pharmacological properties, including antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects. In this study, APL was evaluated for antiviral activity by its anti-apoptotic, anti-pyroptosis, and anti-inflammatory effects. METHODS: The cytotoxicity of APL was determined by the MTT method. We investigated the therapeutic impact of APL on IBV through a plate assay. We explored that APL inhibited IBV-induced apoptosis, pyroptosis, and inflammation in HD11 cells by RT-qPCR and immunofluorescence. Also, it was verified in the clinical chicken embryo trial. RESULTS: We found that APL down-regulated apoptosis-related genes Caspase-3, Caspase-8, Caspase-9, Bax, Bid, and Bak, down-regulated pyroptosis gene DFNA5, and down-regulated inflammation-related genes (NF-κB, NLRP3, iNOS, TNF-α, and IL-1ß). In addition, APL reduced the reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in cells. Finally, clinical trials showed that APL inhibited IBV-induced apoptosis, pyroptosis, and inflammation, as well as reduced the mortality and malformation of chicken embryos. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we delved into the antiviral properties of APL in the context of chicken macrophage (HD11) infection with IBV. Our findings confirm that andrographolide effectively inhibits apoptosis, pyroptosis, and inflammation by IBV infection. Furthermore, this inhibition was verified on chicken embryos in vivo. This inhibition suggests a substantial potential for APL as a therapeutic agent to mitigate the harmful effects of IBV on host cells.

ABSTRACT

The formation and sedimentation of oil-mineral aggregates (OMAs) is the major method to transport spilled oil to the seafloor. In this study, the formation and sedimentation experiments of OMA using montmorillonite and four crude oils were performed in a wave tank in the presence of chemical dispersant. Most of the formed OMAs were droplet OMAs, and single droplet OMA would aggregate into multiple ones under the action of the dispersant. The size of the oil droplets trapped in the OMA increased with time and was larger for the oil with higher viscosity. The sinking velocities of OMAs formed in this study were between 100-1200 µm s-1 and they were positively correlated with their diameter. The density of OMA was of the same order as that of the crude oil that formed them. An increase in the dispersant dosage could promote the formation of OMAs. The oil content in OMAs was higher for the denser oil in the presence of a dispersant. The maximum oil trapping efficiency of OMAs was 48.05%. This study provides fundamental data on the formation kinetics of OMAs.

ABSTRACT

The quantitative evaluation of peripheral ocular optics is essential in both myopia research and the investigation of visual performance in people with normal and compromised central vision. We have developed a widefield scanning wavefront sensor (WSWS) capable of multidirectional scanning while maintaining natural central fixation at the primary gaze. This Shack-Hartmann-based WSWS scans along any retinal meridian by using a unique scanning method that involves the concurrent operation of a motorized rotary stage (horizontal scan) and a goniometer (vertical scan). To showcase the capability of the WSWS, we tested scanning along four meridians including a 60° horizontal, 36° vertical, and two 36° diagonal scans, each completed within a time frame of 5 seconds.

ß-Nicotinamide mononucleotide is a biologically active nucleotide compound, and its excellent anti-aging activity is widely used in medicine and has multiple functions, making NMN have broad application prospects in the fields of nutrition, health food, and even medicine. Herein, based on the supply of the co-substrate PRPP, we designed and constructed three in vivo NMN synthesis pathways using glucose, xylose, and arabinose as raw materials and Escherichia coli as the host. The best in vivo pathway through whole-cell catalysis was identified. Then, we optimized the cell culture and catalytic conditions of the optimal path to determine the optimal conditions and ultimately obtained an NMN titer of 1.8 mM.

OBJECTIVE: To design appropriate orthosis for hallux valgus, a difficult foot condition that affects a quarter of the body's bones, we need to clarify the numerical biomechanical features, which have not been established in previous biomechanical studies. Therefore, we constructed a finite element model of the bunion foot to investigate the orthopaedic force compensation mechanism. METHODS: A patient with moderate hallux valgus was recruited. CT imaging data in DICOM format were extracted for three-dimensional foot model reconstruction. In conjunction with the need for rapid design of bunion orthosis, a metatarsal force application sizing method based on an orthogonal test design was investigated. The orthogonal test design was used to obtain the hallux valgus angle (HVA) and the inter metatarsal angle (IMA) data for different force combinations. Based on the extreme difference analysis and analysis of variance of the test results, the influence of different force combinations on the bunion angle was quickly determined. RESULTS: The results showed that the stress concentration occurred mainly in the first metatarsal bone. The distribution trend was in the medial and lateral middle of the bone and gradually decreased to the dorsal base of the bone body. The greatest stress occurs in the cartilage between the phalanges and metatarsals. In 25 groups of simulation experiments, HVA was reduced from 27.7° to 13°, and IMA was reduced from 12.5° to 7.3°. CONCLUSION: Applying detailed orthopaedic force collocation to the first metatarsal column can effectively restore the mechanics and kinematics of hallux valgus, and provide a reference for the treatment of bunion valgus and the design of orthopaedic devices.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: It remains unclear whether plant-based or animal-based dietary patterns are more beneficial for older adults more in maintaining muscle mass. Using a prospective cohort with nationwide sample of China older adults in this study, we aimed to examine the relationship between adhering to plant-based diet patterns or animal-based diet patterns and muscle loss. METHODS: We included 2771 older adults (≥ 65 years) from the Chinese Longitudinal Health Longevity Survey (CLHLS) with normal muscle mass at baseline (2011 and 2014 waves), which followed up into 2018. Plant-based dietary pattern scores and preference subgroups were constructed using 16 common animal-based and plant-based food frequencies. We used the corrected appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) prediction formula to assess muscle mass. We applied the Cox proportional hazard risk regression to explore associations between dietary patterns and low muscle mass (LMM). RESULTS: During a mean of 4.1 years follow-up, 234 (8.4%) participants with normal muscle mass at baseline showed LMM. The plant-based dietary pattern reduced the risk of LMM by 5% (Hazard Ratios [HR]: 0.95, 95% confidence intervals [95%CI]: 0.92-0.97). In addition, a high plant-based food company with a high animal-based food intake pattern reduced the risk of LMM by 60% (HR: 0.40, 95% CI: 0.240-0.661) and 73% (HR: 0.27, 95% CI: 0.11-0.61) in the BADL disability and IADL disability population compared with a low plant-based food and high animal-based food intake, whereas a high plant-based food and low animal-based food intake was more beneficial in reducing the risk of LMM in the normal BADL functioning (HR: 0.57, 95% CI: 0.35-0.90) and IADL functioning (HR: 0.51, 95% CI: 0.28-0.91) population. CONCLUSIONS: When it comes to maintaining muscle mass in older Chinese people with functional independence, a plant-based diet pattern is more beneficial and effective than the animal-based one. People with functional dependence may profit from a combination of plant-based and animal-based diets to minimize muscle loss.
