ABSTRACT

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is becoming prevalent in the pediatric population. The existing pediatric MetS definitions (e.g., the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) definition and the modified National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) definition) involve complex cut-offs, precluding fast risk assessment in clinical practice.We proposed a simplified definition for assessing MetS risk in youths aged 6-17 years, and compared its performance with two existing widely used pediatric definitions (the IDF definition, and the NCEP definition) in 10 pediatric populations from 9 countries globally (n = 19,426) using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses. In general, the total MetS prevalence of 6.2% based on the simplified definition was roughly halfway between that of 4.2% and 7.7% estimated from the IDF and NCEP definitions, respectively. The ROC curve analyses showed a good agreement between the simplified definition and two existing definitions: the total area under the curve (95% confidence interval) of the proposed simplified definition for identifying MetS risk achieved 0.91 (0.89-0.92) and 0.79 (0.78-0.81) when using the IDF or NCEP definition as the gold standard, respectively.The proposed simplified definition may be useful for pediatricians to quickly identify MetS risk and cardiometabolic risk factors (CMRFs) clustering in clinical practice, and allow direct comparison of pediatric MetS prevalence across different populations, facilitating consistent pediatric MetS risk monitoring and the development of evidence-based pediatric MetS prevention strategies globally.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The American Heart Association recently issued a substantial update to the definition and scoring of cardiovascular health (CVH), now called "Life's Essential 8" (LE8). We aimed to assess the trends in overall and individual LE8 CVH metrics among adolescents in the United States. METHODS: A total of 6,999 United States adolescents aged 12-19 years from six cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007-2008 to 2017-2018 were included in this study. The individual LE8 metrics included diet, physical activity, nicotine exposure, sleep health, body mass index (BMI), blood lipids, blood glucose, and blood pressure (BP). A higher CVH score indicates better CVH health. RESULTS: The mean score of overall CVH significantly increased from 72.8 (95% confidence interval: 71.2-74.3) in 2007-2008 to 77.3 (76.1-78.5) in 2017-2018 in US adolescents (p-trend < .001). From 2007-2008 to 2017-2018, the mean scores increased from 75.5 (72.0-79.1) to 90.0 (88.0-91.9) for nicotine exposure, from 65.2 (61.6-68.8) to 73.3 (69.9-76.8) for sleep health, from 69.9 (67.1-72.8) to 73.0 (69.1-76.9) for blood lipids, and from 94.4 (93.0-95.9) to 96.2 (95.2-97.3) for BP (all p-trend < .05). However, the mean scores for diet, physical activity, and blood glucose did not significantly change (all p-trend > .05), whereas the mean score decreased from 81.4 (78.9-84.0) to 78.6 (76.4-80.8) for BMI (p-trend = .023). DISCUSSION: In United States adolescents, the overall CVH and four components (nicotine exposure, sleep health, blood lipids, and BP) significantly improved over time, diet, physical activity, and blood glucose remained unchanged, whereas BMI worsened.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The translocation of intestinal flora has been linked to the colonization of diverse and heavy lower respiratory flora in patients with septic ARDS, and is considered a critical prognostic factor for patients. METHODS: On the first and third days of ICU admission, BALF, throat swab, and anal swab were collected, resulting in a total of 288 samples. These samples were analyzed using 16S rRNA analysis and the traceability analysis of new generation technology. RESULTS: On the first day, among the top five microbiota species in abundance, four species were found to be identical in BALF and throat samples. Similarly, on the third day, three microbiota species were found to be identical in abundance in both BALF and throat samples. On the first day, 85.16% of microorganisms originated from the throat, 5.79% from the intestines, and 9.05% were unknown. On the third day, 83.52% of microorganisms came from the throat, 4.67% from the intestines, and 11.81% were unknown. Additionally, when regrouping the 46 patients, the results revealed a significant predominance of throat microorganisms in BALF on both the first and third day. Furthermore, as the disease progressed, the proportion of intestinal flora in BALF increased in patients with enterogenic ARDS. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with septic ARDS, the main source of lung microbiota is primarily from the throat. Furthermore, the dynamic trend of the microbiota on the first and third day is essentially consistent.It is important to note that the origin of the intestinal flora does not exclude the possibility of its origin from the throat.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To explore the mechanism of SETDB1 inhibiting epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT),migration and invasion in oral cancer via SOX 7 methylation. METHODS: SETDB1 and SOX7 mRNA and protein expression levels in KB cells of oral cancer and oral mucosal epithelial ATCC cells were determined by qRT-PCR and Western blot (WB). SETDB1 si-RNA was structured, then transfect into KB cells of oral cancer by liposome-mediated method. siRNA-SETDB1 was the experimental group (si-S), siRNA empty vector was the negative control group (si-N), and untransfected KB cells were the blank control group(NC). SETDB1 mRNA and protein expression levels were detected by qRT-PCR and Western blot(WB), to verify the transfection effect. The methylation levels of SOX7 were determined by pyrosequencing. The expression of N-cadherin, Vimentin, ß-catenin, and Slug proteins was detected by WB. Cell viability was measured by MTT assay, migration ability was tested by scratch healing assay, and invasion ability was tested by Transwell chamber assay. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS 21.0 software package. RESULTS: The results of Rt-qPCR and WB showed that the SETDB1 mRNA and protein expression decreased significantly in si-S group(P<0.05). Pyrosequencing test results showed that the regulation of SETDB1 could significantly reduce the SOX7 methylation rate and increased the SOX7 protein expression. WB results showed that knockdown of SETDB1 significantly inhibited the expression of EMT-related proteins N-cadherin, Vimentin, ß-catenin and Slug in oral cancer KB cells (P<0.05). The results of cell functology experiments showed that knockdown of SETDB1 could significantly inhibit survival, migration and invasion of KB cells. CONCLUSIONS: Downregulation of SETDB1 could suppress EMT, migration and invasion of oral cancer cells by regulating SOX7 methylation level, providing new ideas and targets for the diagnosis and treatment of oral cancer.

ABSTRACT

Diorhabda rybakowi Weise is one of the dominant pests feeding on Nitraria spp., a pioneer plant used for windbreaking and sand fixation purposes, and poses a threat to local livestock and ecosystems. To clarify the key olfactory genes of D. rybakowi and provide a theoretical basis for attractant and repellent development, the optimal reference genes under two different conditions (tissue and sex) were identified, and the bioinformatics and characterization of the tissue expression profiles of two categories of soluble olfactory proteins (OBPs and CSPs) were investigated. The results showed that the best reference genes were RPL13a and RPS18 for comparison among tissues, and RPL19 and RPS18 for comparison between sexes. Strong expressions of DrybOBP3, DrybOBP6, DrybOBP7, DrybOBP10, DrybOBP11, DrybCSP2, and DrybCSP5 were found in antennae, the most important olfactory organ for D. rybakowi. These findings not only provide a basis for further in-depth research on the olfactory molecular mechanisms of host-specialized pests but also provide a theoretical basis for the future development of new chemical attractants or repellents using volatiles to control D. rybakowi.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The utility of lipid screening in pediatric settings for preventing adult atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases partly depends on the lifelong tracking of lipid levels. This systematic review aimed to quantify the tracking of lipid levels from childhood and adolescence to adulthood. METHODS: We systematically searched MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, and Google Scholar in March 2022. The protocol was registered with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO; ID: CRD42020208859). We included cohort studies that measured tracking of lipids from childhood or adolescence (<18 years) to adulthood (≥18) with correlation or tracking coefficients. We estimated pooled correlation and tracking coefficients using random-effects meta-analysis. Risk of bias was assessed with a review-specific tool. RESULTS: Thirty-three studies of 19 cohorts (11,020 participants) were included. The degree of tracking from childhood and adolescence to adulthood differed among lipids. Tracking was observed for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (pooled r = 0.55-0.65), total cholesterol (pooled r = 0.51-0.65), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (pooled r = 0.46-0.57), and triglycerides (pooled r = 0.32-0.40). Only one study included tracking of non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (r = 0.42-0.59). Substantial heterogeneity was observed. Study risk of bias was moderate, mostly due to insufficient reporting and singular measurements at baseline and follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Early-life lipid measurements are important for predicting adult levels. However, further research is needed to understand the tracking of non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and the stability of risk classification over time, which may further inform pediatric lipid screening and assessment strategies.

ABSTRACT

Metal-functionalized porphyrin-like graphene structures are promising electrocatalysts for carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) as their metal centers can modulate activity. Yet, the role of metal center of metalloporphyrins (MTPPs) in CO2 reaction activity is still lacking deep understanding. Here, CO2RR mechanism on MTPPs with five different metal centers (M = Fe, Co, Cu, Zn and Ni) are examined by first-principles calculations. The *COOH formation is the rate determined step on the five MTPP structures, and the CoTPP exhibits the best CO2RR activity while ZnTPP and NiTPP are the worst, which is also verified by our experiment. The CO2RR activity is controlled by adsorption states of intermediates (*CO, *COOH), i.e., chemisorption (e.g., on CoTPP) and physisorption (on ZnTPP and NiTPP) of intermediates will lead to good and poor activity, respectively. The deeper the d-band center of the porphyrin ring complexed metal atom, the weaker bonding of MTPP with CO and COOH. Theoretical calculations and experimental results indicate that MTPPs with Co and Fe centers lead to a reduction in the energy barriers for the two uphill reaction steps in the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction process, thereby enhancing CO2 reduction electrocatalytic activity. Faradaic efficiency of CO is correlated with the reaction energy barrier of the first proton-coupled electron reduction process, displaying a strong linear correlation. This work provides a fundamental understanding of MTPPs used as electrocatalysts for CO2RR.

ABSTRACT

Obtaining soil heavy metal content characteristics and spatial distribution is crucial for preventing soil pollution and formulating environmental protection policies. We collected 304 surface soil samples (0-20 cm) in the Changqing district. At the same time, the spectral, temporal, and spatial features of soil heavy metals were derived from multi-remote sensing data; the temporal-spatial-spectral features closely related to soil heavy metals were selected via correlation analysis and used as input independent variables. The measured soil arsenic (As) content was used as the dependent variable to establish a spatial prediction model based on the random forest (RF) algorithm. The results showed the following:the As content in the soils exceeded the background value by 43.17% but did not exceed the risk screening values and intervention values, indicating slight heavy metal pollution in the soil. The accuracy ranking of the spatial prediction models with one feature type from high to low was spatial features (ratio of performance to inter-quartile range (RPIQ)=3.87)>temporal features (RPIQ=2.57)>spectral features (RPIQ=2.50). The spatial features were the most informative for predicting soil heavy metals. The models using temporal-spatial, temporal-spectral, and spatial-spectral features were superior to those using only one feature type, and the RPIQ values were 4.81, 4.21, and 4.70, respectively. The RF model with temporal-spatial-spectral features achieved the highest spatial prediction accuracy (R2=0.90; root mean square error (RMSE)=0.77; RPIQ=5.68). The As content decreased from the northwest to the southeast due to Yellow River erosion and industrial activities. The spatial prediction of soil heavy metals incorporating remote sensing temporal-spatial-spectral features and the random forest model provides effective support for soil pollution prevention and environmental risk control.

ABSTRACT

Tracking and detection have brought great challenges to network security. Therefore, this paper proposes a monitoring method of stealthy complex network attacks considering security situation awareness. By constructing a tracking model of invisible complex network attacks, public monitoring nodes are selected for monitoring. The cost of a single monitoring node is calculated by the algorithm, and the monitoring node is determined by the monitoring node algorithm, so as to reduce the resource occupancy rate of the monitoring node and improve the monitoring accuracy. The simulation results show that this method is stable in the range of 1000 to 4000 nodes, and can effectively monitor the complex network attacks of stealing secrets.

ABSTRACT

Understanding how the electronic state of transition metal atoms can influence molecular adsorption on a substrate is of great importance for many applications. Choosing NH3 as a model molecule, its adsorption behavior on defected SnS2 monolayers is investigated. The number of valence electrons n is controlled by decorating the monolayer with different transition metal atoms, ranging from Sc to Zn. Density-Functional Theory based calculations show that the adsorption energy of NH3 molecules oscillates with n and shows a clear odd-even pattern. There is also a mirror symmetry of the adsorption energies for large and low electron numbers. This unique behavior is mainly governed by the oxidation state of the TM ions. We trace back the observed trends of the adsorption energy to the orbital symmetries and ligand effects which affect the interaction between the 3σ orbitals (NH3) and the 3d orbitals of the transition metals. This result unravels the role which the spin state of TM ions plays in different crystal fields for the adsorption behavior of molecules. This new understanding of the role of the electronic structure on molecular adsorption can be useful for the design of high efficiency nanodevices in areas such as sensing and photocatalysis.

ABSTRACT

Vascular calcification is a pathological process commonly associated with atherosclerosis, chronic kidney disease, and diabetes. Paraspeckle protein NONO is a multifunctional RNA/DNA binding protein involved in many nuclear biological processes but its role in vascular calcification remains unclear. Here, we observed that NONO expression was decreased in calcified arteries of mice and patients with CKD. We generated smooth muscle-specific NONO-knockout mice and established three different mouse models of vascular calcification by means of 5/6 nephrectomy, adenine diet to induce chronic kidney failure, or vitamin D injection. The knockout mice were more susceptible to the development of vascular calcification relative to control mice, as verified by an increased calcification severity and calcium deposition. Likewise, aortic rings from knockout mice showed more significant vascular calcification than those from control mice ex vivo. In vitro, NONO deficiency aggravated high phosphate-induced vascular smooth muscle cell osteogenic differentiation and apoptosis, whereas NONO overexpression had a protective effect. Mechanistically, we demonstrated that the regulation of vascular calcification by NONO was mediated by bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2). NONO directly bound to the BMP2 promoter using its C-terminal region, exerting an inhibitory effect on the transcription of BMP2. Thus, our study reveals that NONO is a novel negative regulator of vascular calcification, which inhibits osteogenic differentiation of vascular smooth muscle cell and vascular calcification via negatively regulating BMP2 transcription. Hence, NONO may provide a promising target for the prevention and treatment of vascular calcification.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To integrate the qualitative research on the self-management experience of breast cancer patients and conduct a systematic review of their self-management experience. METHODS: Using a computer to search a series of databases such as CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, and China Biomedical Database, systematically collect and integrate qualitative research on the self-management experience of breast cancer patients, and the search time is limited to January 2010 to December 2022. The qualitative research quality evaluation standard of the Joanna Briggs Institute Centre for Evidence-Based Health Care in Australia was used as the evaluation standard of this project to complete the accurate evaluation of the literature; Meta-analysis was used to complete the effective integration of the results. RESULTS: 17 pieces of literature were included in this project, and 37 research results with strong integrity were extracted accordingly. On this basis, 7 different categories were summarised, and three integrated results were obtained: the experience of maintaining self-management, symptom recognition, and self-management. CONCLUSION: In the different stages of self-management of breast cancer patients, medical staff should give targeted guidance to help patients obtain a good prognosis.

BACKGROUND & AIM: Limited studies have investigated the association between gut microbiota and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) in children and adolescents. We aimed to identify differences in gut microbiota composition and diversity between children with MAFLD and healthy counterparts. METHODS: Data were collected from a nested case-control study (October to December, 2021) of the "Huantai Childhood Cardiovascular Health Cohort Study" in Huantai County, Zibo City, China. The study included 52 children aged 5-11 years with new-onset MAFLD and 52 healthy children matched by age and sex. Stool samples were collected and analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Shannon index and Chao index were used to assess the α diversity of gut microbiota and Principal coordinates analysis (PCoA) was performed to evaluate ß diversity between the two groups. The differences in the relative abundance of gut microbiota between MAFLD group and control group were compared by the Wilcoxon rank-sum test after false discovery rate (FDR) correction. Additionally, the gut-microbial metabolic pathways were identified using the phylogenetic investigation of communities by reconstruction of unobserved states (PICRUSt). RESULTS: We found that children with MAFLD had significant different gut microbiota composition and reduced α diversity compared with the control group. PCoA showed that the two groups can be significantly distinguished based on the unweighted unifrac distance algorithm. Gut microbiota at the phylum level such as Verrucomicrobia and Desulfobacterial, genus level such as Blautia, Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group, Coprococcus, Erysipelotrichaceae_UCG-003, UCG-002 and Akkermansia, and species level such as Bifidobacterium_longum abundances were significantly decreased in children with MAFLD compared with that in children without MAFLD. Notably, the abundance of these bacteria were found to be associated with HDL-C, SBP, DBP, WC, BMI, etc. In addition, our analysis of gut-microbial metabolic pathways identified differences in carbohydrate transport and metabolism, as well as amino acid transport and metabolism between the two groups. CONCLUSION: Significant differences in gut microbiota composition are observed between children with and without MAFLD, which indicate that gut microbiota may be a potential contributor to the development of MAFLD in childhood.

BACKGROUND: There are limited data on the association between secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure across the life course and depressive symptoms among older adults. We aimed to investigate the association of childhood household SHS exposure, adulthood household SHS exposure, lifetime social SHS exposure, and their coexistence with depressive symptoms in older adults. METHODS: Data were from the 2011-2012 and 2014 waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. About 4000 participants (aged 60 years or older) were recruited in a randomly selected half of the counties and cities in China. Data on SHS exposure, past-year depressive symptoms, and covariates were collected using a questionnaire. The chi-square test (for categorical variables) and t-test (for continuous variables) were used to assess differences in the participant characteristics across groups of SHS exposures. We estimated the odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) of depressive symptom according to different types of SHS exposure. RESULTS: Childhood household SHS exposure (OR = 1.42, 95%CI = 1.22-1.66), adulthood household SHS exposure (OR = 1.41, 95%CI = 1.21-1.63) and lifetime social SHS exposure (OR = 1.35, 95%CI = 1.14-1.58) were associated with higher odds of depressive symptoms. Additionally, those with a higher SHS exposure score had higher odds of depressive symptoms (1 point: OR = 1.56, 95%CI = 1.22-2.00; 2 points: OR = 1.77, 95%CI = 1.39-2.25; 3 points: OR = 1.83, 95%CI = 1.45-2.31). The results were similar when stratified by lifetime nonsmoking, former smoking, and current smoking. LIMITATIONS: Retrospective design may introduce recall bias. CONCLUSIONS: SHS exposure was associated with higher odds of depressive symptoms in older adults, with the effect seeming to be addictive.

Objective@#To examine the mediating effects of blood pressure, glucose, lipids, and serum uric acid on the association between childhood overweight/obesity and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), and to provide scientific evidence for the prevention and control of cardiovascular diseases during childhood.@*Methods@#One public school in Huantai County, Zibo City was selected to conduct the baseline survey from November 2017 to January 2018 using a convenient cluster sampling method. A total of 1 400 children aged 6 to 11 were included in the study. According to the classification criteria based on body mass index (BMI), participants were divided into the non overweight/obese group ( n =787) and the overweight/obese group ( n =613). The mediating effects of metabolic variables on the association between childhood overweight/obesity and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) were analyzed using the "mediation" package in R software.@*Results@#Children who were overweight/obese had higher levels of BMI- Z score (2.0±0.8), systolic blood pressure (SBP) (109.1±8.9 mmHg), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (65.4±6.8 mmHg), fasting plasma glucose (FPG) (4.8±0.5 mmol/L), insulin (INS) (11.3±7.6 μU/mL), apolipoprotein B (ApoB) (0.7±0.2 g/L), lowdensity lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (2.4±0.7 mmol/L), total cholesterol (TC) (4.2±0.9 mmol/L), triglycerides (TG) (0.9±0.4 mmol/L), and serum uric acid (SUA) (321.2±91.4 μmol/L) compared to those who were non-overweight/obese [the corresponding values were (-0.2±0.7),(104.3±8.8) mmHg, (62.2±6.2) mmHg, (4.7±0.6) mmol/L, (6.1±4.2) μU/mL, (0.6±0.2) g/L, (2.2±0.6) mmol/L, (4.1±0.7) mmol/L, (0.7±0.2) mmol/L, and (278.6±74.7) μmol/L, respectively], whereas the levels of high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were lower in overweight/obese children (1.5±0.3 mmol/L) than in non-overweight/obese children (1.7±0.4 mmol/L). All differences were statistically significant ( t =53.66, 9.88, 9.19, 3.60, 16.32, 7.36, 5.11, 2.55, 11.08, 9.58, -10.31, P <0.05). After adjusting for potential covariates, overweight/obese children had 8.72 times increased risk of developing LVH compared to the non-overweight/obese children ( OR=8.72, 95%CI =5.45-14.66, P <0.01). Mediation analysis showed that INS, HDL-C, LDL-C, TG, ApoB, and SUA partially mediated the association between childhood overweight/obesity and LVH, and among these, INS and TG had relatively strong mediating effects, accounting for 28.05% and 13.71% of the total effects, respectively.@*Conclusions@#INS, HDL-C, LDL-C, TG, ApoB, and SUA are intermediate risk factors on the association between childhood overweight/obesity and LVH. Keeping metabolic indicators (especially INS and TG) at healthy levels is particularly important for reducing the burden of cardiovascular diseases in overweight/obese children.

ABSTRACT

The printing industry has always been the key source of volatile organic compound(VOC) emissions in China. However, owing to the complexity of raw materials and processes, the fine emission inventory and its future emission reduction potential of VOCs from the printing industry have not been well characterized. In this study, the existing VOCs emission factors of the printing industry were improved, considering the neglected semi/intermediate VOCs(S/IVOCs). An emissions inventory of VOCs from the printing industry in the period of 2011-2020 in China was compiled. Through scenario analysis, the emission of VOCs under different scenarios in 2030 was predicted, and the emission reduction potential was analyzed. VOCs emissions from the printing industry in China increased first and then decreased in the period of 2011-2020. Compared with that in 2011, VOCs emissions increased by 29.6% in 2020, with an average annual growth rate of 3.0%. This was mainly due to the increasing consumption demand in the printing industry market and the lack of effective measures for integrated management of VOCs. The VOCs emission of the printing industry in China in 2020 was 861 Gg. Gravure printing and packaging processing were the two most important processes, accounting for 52.0% and 28.7%, respectively. Guangdong, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang were the largest contributors to VOC emissions, accounting for 44.12% of the total emissions. VOCs emissions of the printing industry in 2030 were 1187 Gg, 684 Gg, and 362 Gg for the baseline scenario, the general control scenario, and the strict control scenario, respectively. Compared to that in 2020, emissions under different control scenarios in 2030 increased by 37.9% and decreased by 20.6% and 57.9%, respectively. Gravure printing and packaging processing are still the focus of emission reduction.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) has been proposed as a simple and effective screening tool for assessing central obesity and cardiometabolic risk in both adult and pediatric populations. However, evidence suggests that the use of a uniform WHtR cut-off of 0.50 may not be universally optimal for pediatric populations globally. We aimed to determine the optimal cut-offs of WHtR in children and adolescents with increased cardiometabolic risk across different countries worldwide. METHODS: We used ten population-based cross-sectional data on 24,605 children and adolescents aged 6-18 years from Brazil, China, Greece, Iran, Italy, Korea, South Africa, Spain, the UK, and the USA for establishing optimal WHtR cut-offs. We performed an external independent test (9,619 children and adolescents aged 6-18 years who came from other six countries) to validate the optimal WHtR cut-offs based on the predicting performance for at least two or three cardiometabolic risk factors. RESULTS: Based on receiver operator characteristic curve analyses of various WHtR cut-offs to discriminate those with ≥ 2 cardiometabolic risk factors, the relatively optimal percentile cut-offs of WHtR in the normal weight subsample population in each country did not always coincide with a single fixed percentile, but varied from the 75th to 95th percentiles across the ten countries. However, these relatively optimal percentile values tended to cluster irrespective of sex, metabolic syndrome (MetS) criteria used, and WC measurement position. In general, using ≥ 2 cardiometabolic risk factors as the predictive outcome, the relatively optimal WHtR cut-off was around 0.50 in European and the US youths but was lower, around 0.46, in Asian, African, and South American youths. Secondary analyses that directly tested WHtR values ranging from 0.42 to 0.56 at 0.01 increments largely confirmed the results of the main analyses. In addition, the proposed cut-offs of 0.50 and 0.46 for two specific pediatric populations, respectively, showed a good performance in predicting ≥ 2 or ≥ 3 cardiometabolic risk factors in external independent test populations from six countries (Brazil, China, Germany, Italy, Korea, and the USA). CONCLUSIONS: The proposed international WHtR cut-offs are easy and useful to identify central obesity and cardiometabolic risk in children and adolescents globally, thus allowing international comparison across populations.

ABSTRACT

Quantification of behaviors in macaques provides crucial support for various scientific disciplines, including pharmacology, neuroscience, and ethology. Despite recent advancements in the analysis of macaque behavior, research on multi-label behavior detection in socially housed macaques, including consideration of interactions among them, remains scarce. Given the lack of relevant approaches and datasets, we developed the Behavior-Aware Relation Network (BARN) for multi-label behavior detection of socially housed macaques. Our approach models the relationship of behavioral similarity between macaques, guided by a behavior-aware module and novel behavior classifier, which is suitable for multi-label classification. We also constructed a behavior dataset of rhesus macaques using ordinary RGB cameras mounted outside their cages. The dataset included 65 913 labels for 19 behaviors and 60 367 proposals, including identities and locations of the macaques. Experimental results showed that BARN significantly improved the baseline SlowFast network and outperformed existing relation networks. In conclusion, we successfully achieved multi-label behavior detection of socially housed macaques with both economic efficiency and high accuracy.

ABSTRACT

Quantification of liposoluble micronutrients in large-scale vegetable oil samples is urgently needed, because their health benefits are increasingly emphasized. However, current analytical methods are limited to either labor-intensive preparation processes or time-consuming chromatography separation. In this work, an online oil matrix separation strategy for direct, rapid, and simultaneous determination of squalene, tocopherols, and phytosterols in walnut oil (WO) was developed on the basis of the lipid class separation mode of supercritical fluid chromatography. A single run was completed in 13 min containing 6 min of column cleaning and balancing. Satisfactory limit of detections (0.05-0.20 ng/mL), limit of quantifications (0.15-0.45 ng/mL), recoveries (70.61-101.44%), and matrix effects (78.43-91.62%) were achieved, indicating the reliability of this method. In addition, eight sterol esters were identified in WO, which have not previously been reported. The proposed method was applied to characterize the liposoluble micronutrient profile of WO samples obtained from different walnut cultivars, geographical origins, and processes.
