ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore the percentage of in-use electronic sphygmomanometers independently validated clinically in China. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey and Beijing, Shenzhen, Shijiazhuang, Datong, and Shihezi were selected according to the geographical location and economic level. In each site, one tertiary hospital, two community health centers, and 20 families with electronic sphygmomanometers in use were chosen. The information of electronic sphygmomanometers including brand, model, manufacturer and production date were obtained by the trained staff. Ten electronic sphygmomanometers from each hospital, five electronic sphygmomanometers from each community health center, and one electronic sphygmomanometer from each family were surveyed, and the user's subjective judgment results and judgment basis on the accuracy of the electronic sphygmomanometer measurement were collected. We searched six registration websites (Medaval, Stride BP, dabl Educational Trust, British and Irish Hypertension Society, American Medical Association and Hypertension Canada) and two research databases (PubMed and CNKI) for the clinical validation status of each electronic sphygmomanometer. Results: A total of 200 electronic sphygmomanometers were investigated in this study, of which only 29.0% (58/200) passed independent clinical validation. When stratified by users, the percentage of being clinical validated was 46.0% (23/50) for electronic sphygmomanometers in hospitals, 42.0% (21/50) for those in community health centers and 14.0% (14/100) for those in home use, respectively, and the proportions between the three groups were significantly difference (P<0.001). Doctors in tertiary hospitals and community health service centers judged the accuracy of electronic sphygmomanometers mainly on the basis of "regular correction" (41.0% (41/100)) and "comparison with other electronic sphygmomanometers" (20.0% (20/100)), while among home users, 41.0% (41/100) were not clear about the accuracy of electronic sphygmomanometers, and 40.0% (40/100) made the judgment by "comparison with the devices in hospitals". Conclusion: The clinical validation of in-use electronic sphygmomanometers in China is low. Most of users, including healthcare professionals, are not aware of clinical validation of electronic sphygmomanometers.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To study the correlation between the movement distance of small intestinal contents and survival time in female SD rat models after one-time satiation, and to evaluate its application value for postmortem interval estimation. METHODS: Adult female SD rats were randomly divided into postprandial groups (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 h after feeding) and control group. The postprandial groups were fed for 1 h, meanwhile control group was kept fasting. All rats were sacrificed at the given time. The contents in stomach and small intestine were observed, described, compared and photographed, and the movement distance of small intestinal contents was measured. The data of postprandial groups were analysed by one-way analysis of variance. RESULTS: The stomach and duodenum of control group were empty with a little thin and yellow small intestinal liquid. The gastral cavities of 1 h postprandial group were full of undigested food. The evolutionary changes of character, colour and content were observed in the gastric and small intestinal contents of other postprandial groups. The movement distance of intestinal contents increased while the empty part decreased gradually. The differences among the postprandial groups were statistically significant (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: After a 24 h fasting with free drinking and the following 1 h feeding, an ideal animal model can be established successfully on female SD rats, which can provide an experimental basis for postmortem interval estimation based on the changes of small intestinal contents in forensic practice.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To establish a method for the age estimation of adult living donor based on pubic MSCT three-dimensional reconstruction and verify its accuracy and reliability. METHODS: The volume rendering (VR) image data of pubic symphysis surface were collected from 300 volunteers aged over 17 years old. According to different age groups, the age estimation of these volunteers was performed by the method and formula of pubic symphysis surface. RESULTS: In the 300 volunteers, the difference between biological age and actual age was <1 year in 117 cases, >1-2 years in 178 cases, >2 years in 5 cases. CONCLUSIONS: MSCT three-dimensional reconstruction technology of pubic symphysis surface can be used to estimate the age of adult living donor, which can provide a high accurate and reliable result.

BACKGROUND: Leprosy has an impact on patients' quality of life (QoL). However, there has been no study specifically on the impact of the severest type of leprosy-lepromatous leprosy on QoL. OBJECTIVE: To describe the use of Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) among patients with lepromatous leprosy in China. METHODS: Sixty-four inpatients with lepromatous leprosy of Shangluo hospital and Hanzhong hospital and sixty-four controls (healthy volunteers or patients with other dermatoses) matched for age and gender were asked to complete DLQI questionnaires from 2 September 2008 to 20 December 2008. Extensive data were collected besides DLQI, including demographic data and disease-related characteristics. Absence or presence of disability among patients with lepromatous leprosy was evaluated at the same time. RESULTS: The overall mean DLQI score for lepromatous leprosy (18.78) was higher than that for control (9.00) (P < 0.001). Patients with lepromatous leprosy scored significantly higher for all items (P < 0.001) except Q4 (clothes choice). Controls scored significantly lower for all domains of DLQI. Scores of LL increased markedly with increasing clinical severity, but were not associated with educational level, gender, age and disease duration. The inter-item correlation averaged 0.240 and Cronbach's alpha was 0.759, indicating high internal consistency. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first exclusive study to attempt to measure the impact of lepromatous leprosy on QoL. Lepromatous leprosy has a severe impact on QoL.

ABSTRACT

In order to develop a simple and safe test for the detection of vaccinated as well as wild type Pseudorabies virus (PRV) infected pigs, the modified gE gene of PRV Ea strain, obtained by cutting the 5' UTR using PCR and DNA recombinant technique, was inserted into baculovirus expression vector pFastBac 1, resulting the trans-position plamid pFE1.75. After homologous recombination, recombinant baculovirus rvBacE1.75 was gained and high level expression of glycoprotein E (gE) was observed after the infection of rvBacE1.75 to Tn-5B1-4 cells. The expression product was 80-88 kD and was specific to antisera against PRV Ea strain by Western-blotting. Purified recombinant proteins were used as an antigen in Latex Agglutination Test(gE-LAT) and the test was specific, sensitive, safe and simple.

ABSTRACT

Synthesis and bioactivities of new antagonists of luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) with novel unnatural amino acids at position five are reported. Most of them showed some antiovulatory activity at 0.5 microgram/rat and two of them inhibited ovulation completely at 1 microgram/rat using saline as vehicle.

ABSTRACT

Five new antagonists of luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) containing novel unnatural amino acids at position six are reported. They are very effective in the rat antiovulatory assay. Using saline as vehicle, antagonist-[N-Ac-D-2-Nal1, D-4-Cl-Phe2, D-3-Pal3, Arg5, D-A26, D-Ala10]-LHRH inhibited ovulation completely at 1 micrograms/rat and three of the other antagonists showed some antiovulatory activity at 0.5 micrograms/rat.

ABSTRACT

Antagonists of the luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) of increased potency is a goal for control of ovulation. In the design and synthesis of 26 decapeptides, emphasis was given to analogs with Lys8 and Arg8 and with various substitutions in positions 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8. Two antagonists, [N-Ac-D-2-Nal1,D-pClPhe2,D-3-Pal3,Ser4,Tyr5,D-Ar g6,Leu7,Lys8, Pro9,D-Ala10]-NH2 and [N-Ac-D-2-Nal1,D-pClPhe2,D-3-Pal3,Ser4,Arg5++ +,D-3-Pal6,Leu7,Arg8,Pro9, D-Ala10]-NH2 showed 80-85% antiovulatory activity (AOA) at 0.25 micrograms in the rat. The latter antagonist showed 60% AOA at 0.125 micrograms. Of four pairs of analogs with Arg8 and Lys8, respectively, two pairs favored Lys8 over Arg8 for potency. One pair showed negligible difference and another pair favored Arg8 over Lys8. There is specificity of substitution for potency. In other antagonists, D-3-Pal3, Tyr5 or Phe5, D-Arg6 and Leu7 or Nle7 or Val7 and Arg8 were variously effective substitutions for increase of potency and reduction of histamine release.

ABSTRACT

Ever increasing potency is an international goal for antagonists of the luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH). [N-Ac-D-2-Nal1,D-pClPhe2, D-3-Pal3,Ser4,Arg5,D-3-Pal6,Leu7,Arg8,Pro9,D- Ala10]-NH2 caused 60%/125 ng inhibition of ovulation in the rat, and appears to be the most potent antagonist yet described. Strategy of design was the replacement of D-Arg6 with D-3-Pal6 and of Tyr5 with Arg5. Replacing Arg5 with His5 reduced activity by 50% at 250 ng. Both the Arg5 and His5 analogs showed 100% inhibition of ovulation at 0.5 microgram. Of ten pairs of analogs with D-3-Pal6 and D-Arg6, 3/10 with D-3-Pal6 were more potent than those with D-Arg6. Histamine release was less for the D-3-Pal6 peptides of three pairs.

ABSTRACT

The sequences of four naturally occurring luteinizing hormone releasing hormones (LHRH's) differ only in positions 5, 7 and 8. Salmon and chicken II LHRH's have Trp7; porcine/ovine (P/O) and chicken I LHRH's have Leu7. The receptor for P/O LHRH might effectively bind certain antagonists with Trp7. Thirteen antagonists having Trp7 and eight antagonists with other substitutions in position 7 were synthesized. One of the thirteen antagonists with the natural Trp7, [N-Ac-D-2-Nal1,D-pClPhe2,D-3-Pal3,D-Arg6,Trp7,D- Ala10]-LHRH, not only maintained activity, but had increased potency (ca. 58%; 90% antiovulatory activity/250 ng; rats) in comparison with the companion analog with the natural Leu7 of P/O LHRH. The other twelve Trp7-antagonists had lower potency.
