ABSTRACT

Cimicifuga dahurica (C. dahurica) is an important medicinal plant in the northern region of China. The best supplemental light environment helps plant growth, development, and metabolism. In this study, we used two-year-old seedlings as experimental materials. The white light as the control (CK). The different ratios of red (R) and blue (B) combined light were supplemented (T1, 2R: 1B, 255.37 µmol m-2·s-1; T2, 3R: 1B, 279.69 µmol m-2·s-1; T3, 7R: 1B, 211.16 µmol m-2·s-1). The growth characteristics, photosynthetic pigment content, photosynthesis and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, and primary metabolite content were studied in seedlings. The results showed that: 1) The fresh weight from shoot, root, and total fresh weight were significantly (P < 0.05) increased under T2 and T3 treatment. 2) The contents of chlorophyll a (Chl a), chlorophyll b (Chl b), and total chlorophyll (Chl) were significantly (P < 0.05) increased under T2 treatment, and carotenoid (car) content was reduced. 3) The photochemical quenching (qP), the actual photosynthetic efficiency of PSII (Y(II)), and the photosynthetic electron transfer rate (ETR) from leaves were significantly (P < 0.05) increased under T1 treatment. The Net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs), intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), and transpiration rate (Tr) were significantly (P < 0.05) increased under T2 and T3 treatments. 4) A total of 52 primary metabolites were detected in C. dahurica leaves. Compared with CK, 14, 15, and 18 differential metabolites were screened under T1, T2, and T3 treatments. In addition, D-xylose, D-glucose, glycerol, glycolic acid, and succinic acid were significantly (P < 0.05) accumulated under the T2 treatment, which could regulate the TCA cycle metabolism pathway. The correlation analysis suggested that plant growth was promoted by regulating the change of D-mannose content in galactinol metabolism and amino sugar and nucleotide sugar metabolism. In summary, the growth of C. dahurica was improved under T2 treatment.

ABSTRACT

The intrinsic anisotropy of NbSe2 provides a favorable prerequisite of second harmonic generation (SHG) and rich possibilities for tailoring its nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. Here we report the highly efficient SHG of mechanically exfoliated NbSe2 flakes. The nonlinear optical response changes with excitation wavelengths, layer thicknesses, and polarizations of the excitation laser. The anisotropic SHG response further exhibits the intrinsic non-centrosymmetric crystal structure and could effectively assign the crystalline orientation of NbSe2 flakes. Interestingly, although NbSe2 flakes with tens of nanometers thickness experience attenuations in SHG performance, more efficient SHG anisotropy ratios were obtained, which are around 4 times higher than that of the 5-layer counterpart. The determined second-order nonlinearities of NbSe2 flakes (monolayer: ∼1.0 × 103 pm/V; 3-layer: ∼73 pm/V) are comparable to those of the commonly reported two-dimensional materials (e.g., MoS2, WSe2, graphene) with the same number of layers and much higher than those of commercial nonlinear optical crystals.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To identify important MRI features to differentiate hepatic mucinous cystic neoplasms (MCN) from septated hepatic cysts (HC) using random forest and compared with logistic regression algorithm. METHODS: Pathologically diagnosed hepatic cysts and hepatic MCNs with pre-operative contrast-enhanced MRI in our hospital from 2010 to 2023 were collected and only septated lesions on enhanced MRI were enrolled. A total of 21 septated HC and 18 MCNs were included in this study. Eighteen MRI features were analyzed and top important features were identified based on random forest (RF) algorithm. The results were evaluated by the prediction performance of a RF model combining the important features and compared with the performance of the logistic regression (LR) algorithm. Finally, for each identified feature, diagnostic probability, sensitivity, and specificity were calculated and compared. RESULTS: Four variables, i.e., the septation arising from wall without indentation, multiseptate, intracapsular cyst sign, and solitary lesion were extracted as top important features with significance for MCNs by the random forest algorithm. The RF model using these variables had an AUC of 0.982 (0.95CI, 0.950-1.000), compared with the LR model based on two identified features with AUC of 0.931 (0.95CI, 0.846-1.000), p = 0.202. Among the four important features, multiseptate had the highest specificity (95.2%) and good sensitivity (72.2%, lower than the septation from wall without indentation, 94.4%) to diagnose MCNs. CONCLUSION: Four out of 18 MRI features were extracted as reliably important factors to differ hepatic MCNs from septated HC. The combination of these four features in a RF model could achieve satisfactory diagnostic efficacy.

ABSTRACT

Two-dimensional molybdenum borides (MBenes) comprise a new class of 2D transition metal borides that exhibit potential photonics applications. Recently, the synthesis of individual single-layer Mo4/3B2Tx (T = O, F, OH) MBene sheets has been realized, which attracted considerable attention in optoelectronics. However, there is still a lack of understanding and regulation of the photophysical processes of Mo4/3B2Tx MBene. Here, we demonstrate that Mo4/3B2Tx MBene exhibits a surface termination-dependent electronic structure, carrier dynamics, and nonlinear optical response over a wide wavelength range (500-1550 nm). As prepared 2D Mo4/3B2F2 MBene possesses a semimetal material property that exhibits a shorter intraband scattering process (<100 ps) and a considerable nonlinear optical response at a broadband cover optical communication C band at 1550 nm. These thrilling results are confirmed theoretically and experimentally. The analysis of these results adds to the regulating and understanding of the basic photophysical processes, which is anticipated to be beneficial for the further design of MBene-based photonics and nanoelectronics devices.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Although en bloc dissection of hepatic hilum lymph nodes has many advantages in radical tumor treatment, the feasibility and safety of this approach for laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (LPD) require further clinical evaluation and investigation. AIM: To explore the application value of the "five steps four quadrants" modularized en bloc dissection technique for accessing hepatic hilum lymph nodes in LPD patients. METHODS: A total of 52 patients who underwent LPD via the "five steps four quadrants" modularized en bloc dissection technique for hepatic hilum lymph nodes from April 2021 to July 2023 in our department were analyzed retrospectively. The patients' body mass index (BMI), preoperative laboratory indices, intraoperative variables and postoperative complications were recorded. The relationships between preoperative data and intraoperative lymph node dissection time and blood loss were also analyzed. RESULTS: Among the 52 patients, 36 were males and 16 were females, and the average age was 62.2 ± 11.0 years. There were 26 patients with pancreatic head cancer, 16 patients with periampullary cancer, and 10 patients with distal bile duct cancer. The BMI was 22.3 ± 3.3 kg/m², and the median total bilirubin (TBIL) concentration was 57.7 (16.0-155.7) µmol/L. All patients successfully underwent the "five steps four quadrants" modularized en bloc dissection technique without lymph node clearance-related complications such as postoperative bleeding or lymphatic leakage. Correlation analysis revealed significant associations between preoperative BMI (r = 0.3581, P = 0.0091), TBIL level (r = 0.2988, P = 0.0341), prothrombin time (r = 0.3018, P = 0.0297) and lymph node dissection time. Moreover, dissection time was significantly correlated with intraoperative blood loss (r = 0.7744, P < 0.0001). Further stratified analysis demonstrated that patients with a preoperative BMI ≥ 21.9 kg/m² and a TIBL concentration ≥ 57.7 µmol/L had significantly longer lymph node dissection times (both P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The "five steps four quadrants" modularized en bloc dissection technique for accessing the hepatic hilum lymph node is safe and feasible for LPD. This technique is expected to improve the efficiency of hepatic hilum lymph node dissection and shorten the learning curve; thus, it is worthy of further clinical promotion and application.

ABSTRACT

The separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers in semiconducting materials are essential processes that determine the efficiency of optoelectronic devices and photocatalysts, and transient absorption spectroscopy provides a powerful support for exploring the diffusion and recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. Herein, high-quality Cu1.81S nanoplates were synthesized by a hot injection method, and were used as starting templates for the preparation of Cu1.81S-CdS heterojunctions and CdS nanoplates by cation exchange. Their carrier dynamics were investigated by transient absorption spectroscopy, which revealed that photogenerated holes may be transferred from the CdS phase to the Cu1.81S phase under 400 nm excitation. This process is in the opposite direction to the hole transfer induced by near-infrared localized surface plasmon resonance in copper sulfide heterostructures. Moreover, density functional theory calculations were used to further explain the visible light-induced hole transport process. This transfer is a potential way to increase the rate of H2 production and enhance the photostability of the catalyst.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study aimed to identify clinical characteristics associated with the prevalence of progressive pulmonary fibrosis (PPF) in interstitial lung disease (ILD) and to develop a prognostic nomogram model for clinical use. Methods: In this single-centered, retrospective study, we enrolled ILD patients with relatively comprehensive clinical data and assessed the incidence of PPF within a year using collected demographics, laboratory data, high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT), and pulmonary function test (PFT) results. We used a training cohort of ILD patients to identify early predictors of PPF and then validated them in an internal validation cohort and subsets of ILD patients using a multivariable logistic regression analysis. A prognostic nomogram was formulated based on these predictors, and the accuracy and efficiency were evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), calibration plot, and decision curve analysis (DCA). Results: Among the enrolled patients, 120 (39.09%) cases had connective tissue disease-associated interstitial lung disease (CTD-ILD), 115 (37.46%) had non-idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis idiopathic interstitial pneumonia (non-IPF IIP), and 35 (11.4%) had hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP). Overall, 118 (38.4%) cases experienced pulmonary fibrosis progression. We found that baseline DLco% pred (OR 0.92; 95% CI, 8.93-0.95) was a protective factor for ILD progression, whereas combined pneumonia (OR 4.57; 95% CI, 1.24-18.43), modified Medical Research Council dyspnea score (mMRC) (OR 4.9; 95% CI, 2.8-9.5), and high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) score (OR 1.22; 95% CI, 1.07-1.42) were independent risk factors for PPF. The AUC of the proposed nomogram in the development cohort was 0.96 (95% CI, 0.94, 0.98), and the calibration plot showed good agreement between the predicted and observed incidence of PPF (Hosmer-Lemeshow test: P = 0.86). Conclusion: ILD patients with combined pneumonia, low baseline DLco% pred, high mMRC marks, and high HRCT scores were at higher risk of progression. This nomogram demonstrated good discrimination and calibration, indicating its potential utility for clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Endometrial receptivity is crucial for the establishment of a healthy pregnancy outcome. Previous research on endometrial receptivity primarily examined endometrial thickness, endometrial echo types, and endometrial blood supply. OBJECTIVE: To explore the differences in the elastic modulus of the endometrium in women with various pregnancy outcomes by real-time shear wave elastography (SWE) and to investigate its application value in evaluation of endometrial receptivity. METHODS: A total of 205 pregnant women who were admitted at Wenzhou People's Hospital between January 2021 and December 2022 were selected. Three-dimensional transvaginal sonography and real-time shear wave elastography were performed in the proliferative phase and receptive phase of the endometrium, and the average elastic modulus of the endometrium in the two phases was obtained and compared. According to whether the pregnancy was successful or not, the participants were divided into the pregnancy group (n= 72) and non-pregnancy group (n= 133), and the differences in intimal thickness, 3D blood flow parameters, and average elastic modulus of intima were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The average elastic modulus of the endometrium in the proliferative phase and receptive phase was (23.92 ± 2.31) kPa and (11.82 ± 2.24) kPa, respectively, and the difference was statistically significant P< 0.05. The average elastic modulus of the endometrium in the pregnancy group and non-pregnancy group was (9.97 ± 1.08) kPa and (12.82 ± 2.06) kPa, respectively, and the difference was statistically significant P< 0.05. The area under the curve of predicting pregnancy by the average elastic modulus of the endometrium in the receptive phase was 0.888 (0.841∼0.934), with corresponding P value < 0.05. The critical value was 11.15, with a corresponding sensitivity of 81.7% and specificity of 78.2%. CONCLUSION: Real-time shear wave elastography can quantitatively evaluate endometrial elasticity, indirectly reflect the endometrial phase, and provide a new diagnostic concept for evaluating endometrial receptivity and predicting pregnancy outcome in infertile patients.

ABSTRACT

Interlayer charge-transfer (CT) in 2D atomically thin vertical stacks heterostructures offers an unparalleled new approach to regulation of device performance in optoelectronic and photonics applications. Despite the fact that the saturable absorption (SA) in 2D heterostructures involves highly efficient optical modulation in the space and time domain, the lack of explicit SA regulation mechanism at the nanoscale prevents this feature from realizing nanophotonic modulation. Here, the enhancement of SA response via CT in WS2/graphene vertical heterostructure is proposed and the related mechanism is demonstrated through simulations and experiments. Leveraging this mechanism, CT-induced SA enhancement can be expanded to a wide range of nonlinear optical modulation applications for 2D materials. The results suggest that CT between 2D heterostructures enables efficient nonlinear optical response regulation.

ABSTRACT

We theoretically explore the conditions for generating optical bistability (OB) in a heterodimer comprised of a semiconductor quantum dot (SQD) and a metallic nanoshell (MNS). The MNS is made of a metallic nanosphere as a core and a dielectric material as a shell. For the specific hybrid system considered, the bistable effect appears only if the frequency of the pump field is equal to (or slightly less than) the exciton frequency for a proper shell thickness. Bistability phase diagrams, when plotted, show that the dipole-induced bistable region can be greatly broadened by changing the shell thickness of the MNS in a strong exciton-plasmon coupling regime. In particular, we demonstrate that the multipole polarization not only narrows the bistable zone but also enlarges the corresponding thresholds for a given intermediate scaled pumping intensity. On the other hand, when the SQD couples strongly with the MNS, the multipole polarization can also significantly broaden the bistable region and induce a great suppression of the FWM (four-wave mixing) signal for a fixed shell thickness. These interesting findings offer a fresh understanding of the bistability conditions in an SQD/MNS heterodimer, and may be useful in the fabrication of high-performance and low-threshold optical bistable nanodevices.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of electroacupuncture on threshold of pain, gait, proliferation and differentiation of muscle satellite cell in rats with acute blunt trauma of gastrocnemius muscle, and to explore the possible mechanism of electroacupuncture in promoting the repair of acute injury of skeletal muscle. METHODS: A total of 48 SD rats were randomly divided into a blank group (6 rats), a model group (24 rats) and an electroacupuncture group (18 rats). In the model group and the electroacupuncture group, the model of acute blunt trauma of gastrocnemius muscle was established by self-made impactor. In the electroacupuncture group, electroacupuncture was applied at "Chengshan" (BL 57) and "Yanglingquan" (GB 34) on the right side, with disperse-dense wave, in frequency of 2 Hz/100 Hz, once a day, 30 min each time. Electroacupuncture intervention was performed for 3, 7 and 14 days according to the sampling time. On the 1st, 3rd, 7th and 14th days after modeling, the mechanical withdrawal pain threshold of hindfoot was detected by Von Frey method; the standing time and the maximum contact area of the right hindfoot were recorded by Cat Walk XTTM animal gait analysis instrument; the morphology of the right gastrocnemius muscle and the number of inflammatory cells were observed by HE staining; the positive expression of paired box gene 7 (Pax7) and myogenic differentiation (MyoD) of the right gastrocnemius muscle was detected by immunofluorescence. RESULTS: After modeling, the muscle fiber rupture and massive infiltration of red blood cells and inflammatory cells were observed in the right gastrocnemius muscle; after electroacupuncture intervention, the morphology of muscle fiber was intact and the infiltration of inflammatory cells was improved. Compared with the blank group, in the model group, the differences of mechanical withdrawal pain threshold between the left and right foot were increased (P<0.05), the standing time was shortened and the maximum contact area of the right hindfoot was decreased (P<0.05), the number of inflammatory cells and the positive expression of Pax7 and MyoD of the right gastrocnemius muscle were increased (P<0.05) on the 1st, 3rd, 7th and 14th days after modeling. Compared with the model group, in the electroacupuncture group, the differences of mechanical withdrawal pain threshold were decreased (P<0.05), the standing time was prolonged (P<0.05), the number of inflammatory cells of right gastrocnemius muscle was decreased (P<0.05) on the 7th and 14th days after modeling; the maximum contact area of the right hindfoot was increased (P<0.05), the positive expression of MyoD of the right gastrocnemius muscle was increased (P<0.05) on the 3rd, 7th and 14th days after modeling; the positive expression of Pax7 of the right gastrocnemius muscle was increased (P<0.05) on the 3rd day after modeling. CONCLUSION: Electroacupuncture can effectively improve the pain threshold and gait in rats with acute blunt trauma of gastrocnemius muscle, and promote the repair of skeletal muscle injury, the mechanism may be related to the up-regulation of Pax7 and MyoD, so as to promoting the proliferation and differentiation of muscle satellite cell.

ABSTRACT

Poor stability retards the industrialization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). One of the effective ways to solve this issue is to modify the perovskite surface to improve the efficiency and stability of the PSCs. Herein, we synthesized CuFeS2 nanocrystals and applied them to modify the perovskite surface. The efficiency of the PSCs with CuFeS2 modification is improved to 20.17% from 18.64% for the control devices. Some investigations demonstrate that the CuFeS2 modification passivates the perovskite surface defects and induces better energy band arrangement. Furthermore, the stability of the PSCs with CuFeS2 modification is improved compared with the devices without CuFeS2 modification. The efficiency of the PSCs with CuFeS2 modification maintains 93% of its initial value, whereas that of the devices without CuFeS2 modification decreases to 61% of the initial value. This work demonstrates that CuFeS2 is a novel material used as a modification layer to enhance the efficiency and stability of the PSCs.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Apoptosis is an important physiological process, making a great difference to development and tissue homeostasis. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic joint disease characterized by degeneration and destruction of articular cartilage and bone hyperplasia. This purpose of this study is to provide an updated review of the role of apoptosis in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis. METHODS: A comprehensive review of the literature on osteoarthritis and apoptosis was performed, which mainly focused on the regulatory factors and signaling pathways associated with chondrocyte apoptosis in osteoarthritis and other pathogenic mechanisms involved in chondrocyte apoptosis. RESULTS: Inflammatory mediators such as reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitric oxide (NO), IL-1ß, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and Fas are closely related to chondrocyte apoptosis. NF-κB signaling pathway, Wnt signaling pathway, and Notch signaling pathway activate proteins and gene targets that promote or inhibit the progression of osteoarthritis disease, including chondrocyte apoptosis and ECM degradation. Long non-coding RNAs (LncRNAs) and microRNAs (microRNAs) have gradually replaced single and localized research methods and become the main research approaches. In addition, the relationship between cellular senescence, autophagy, and apoptosis was also briefly explained. CONCLUSION: This review offers a better molecular delineation of apoptotic processes that may help in designing new therapeutic options for OA treatment.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR) is one of the most common congenital digestive tract malformations and can cause stubborn constipation or gastrointestinal obstruction after birth, causing great physical and mental pain to patients and their families. Studies have shown that more than 20 genes are involved in HSCR, and most cases of HSCR are sporadic. However, the overall rate of familial recurrence in 4331 cases of HSCR is about 7.6%. Furthermore, familial HSCR patients show incomplete dominance. We still do not know the penetrance and genetic characteristics of these known risk genes due to the rarity of HSCR families. METHODS: To find published references, we used the title/abstract terms "Hirschsprung" and "familial" in the PubMed database and the MeSH terms "Hirschsprung" and "familial" in Web of Science. Finally, we summarized 129 HSCR families over the last 40 years. RESULTS: The male-to-female ratio and the percentage of short segment-HSCR in familial HSCR are much lower than in sporadic HSCR. The primary gene factors in the syndromic families are ret proto-oncogene (RET) and endothelin B receptor gene (EDNRB). Most families show incomplete dominance and are relevant to RET, and the RET mutation has 56% penetrance in familial HSCR. When one of the parents is a RET mutation carrier in an HSCR family, the offspring's recurrence risk is 28%, and the incidence of the offspring does not depend on whether the parent suffers from HSCR. CONCLUSION: Our findings will help HSCR patients obtain better genetic counseling, calculate the risk of recurrence, and provide new insights for future pedigree studies.

ABSTRACT

The emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants, commonly with many mutations in S1 subunit of spike (S) protein are weakening the efficacy of the current vaccines and antibody therapeutics. This calls for the variant-proof SARS-CoV-2 vaccines targeting the more conserved regions in S protein. Here, we designed a recombinant subunit vaccine, HR121, targeting the conserved HR1 domain in S2 subunit of S protein. HR121 consisting of HR1-linker1-HR2-linker2-HR1, is conformationally and functionally analogous to the HR1 domain present in the fusion intermediate conformation of S2 subunit. Immunization with HR121 in rabbits and rhesus macaques elicited highly potent cross-neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 and its variants, particularly Omicron sublineages. Vaccination with HR121 achieved near-full protections against prototype SARS-CoV-2 infection in hACE2 transgenic mice, Syrian golden hamsters and rhesus macaques, and effective protection against Omicron BA.2 infection in Syrian golden hamsters. This study demonstrates that HR121 is a promising candidate of variant-proof SARS-CoV-2 vaccine with a novel conserved target in the S2 subunit for application against current and future SARS-CoV-2 variants.

ABSTRACT

Background Nicorandil was reported to improve microvascular dysfunction and reduce reperfusion injury when administered before primary percutaneous coronary intervention. In this multicenter, prospective, randomized, double-blind clinical trial (CHANGE [Effects of Nicorandil Administration on Infarct Size in Patients With ST-Segment-Elevation Myocardial Infarction Undergoing Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention]), we investigated the effects of nicorandil administration on infarct size in patients with ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention. Methods and Results A total of 238 patients with ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction were randomized to receive intravenous nicorandil (n=120) or placebo (n=118) before reperfusion. Patients in the nicorandil group received a 6-mg intravenous bolus of nicorandil followed by continuous infusion at a rate of 6 mg/h. Patients in the placebo group received the same dose of placebo. The predefined primary end point was infarct size on cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging performed at 5 to 7 days and 6 months after reperfusion. CMR imaging was performed in 201 patients (84%). Infarct size on CMR imaging at 5 to 7 days after reperfusion was significantly smaller in the nicorandil group compared with the placebo (control) group (26.5±17.1 g versus 32.4±19.3 g; P=0.022), and the effect remained significant on long-term CMR imaging at 6 months after reperfusion (19.5±14.4 g versus 25.7±15.4 g; P=0.008). The incidence of no-reflow/slow-flow phenomenon during primary percutaneous coronary intervention was much lower in the nicorandil group (9.2% [11/120] versus 26.3% [31/118]; P=0.001), and thus, complete ST-segment resolution was more frequently observed in the nicorandil group (90.8% [109/120] versus 78.0% [92/118]; P=0.006). Left ventricular ejection fraction on CMR imaging was significantly higher in the nicorandil group than in the placebo group at both 5 to 7 days (47.0±10.2% versus 43.3±10.0%; P=0.011) and 6 months (50.1±9.7% versus 46.4±8.5%; P=0.009) after reperfusion. Conclusions In the present trial, administration of nicorandil before primary percutaneous coronary intervention led to improved myocardial perfusion grade, increased left ventricular ejection fraction, and reduced myocardial infarct size in patients with ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction. ABSTRACT

Two-dimensional ternary transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) have aroused great research interest owing to outstanding semiconducting properties and diverse magnetic response. CuFeTe2, as a typical TMC, exhibits ambiguous magnetic behavior and ground state of spin density waves nature. Herein, we first report efficient nonlinear absorption and superior nonlinear refraction of CuFeTe2 nanosheets. The nonlinear absorption and refraction coefficients reach -0.22 cm/GW and -1.66 × 10-12 cm2/W, respectively. Semiempirical theory for direct bandgap semiconductors was applied to estimate the nonlinearities of CuFeTe2 nanosheets. The calculation results indicate that the efficient nonlinearities stem from the free carrier induced band filling effect.

ABSTRACT

PM2.5 samples at Haitian and Songyu container terminals in Xiamen Port were collected in summer and autumn/winter in 2020 and analyzed for 20 elements to investigate their temporal-spatial distribution features, sources, and health risk. The results showed that the levels of PM2.5 were relatively low and did not show significant spatial and diurnal differences. Ca and Si were the main crustal elements, and Zn and Mn were the main heavy metals in PM2.5. Compared with GB 3095-2012 guidelines, Cr(Ⅵ) was in the range of 27.4-28.6 times above the standard. Under the influence of monsoon and port throughput, the concentrations of some elements in summer were higher than those in autumn/winter. Significant diurnal variations were observed for Cu, Zn, SO2, and NO2 but not for V and Ni. Industrial sources were identified as the primary contributor (55.2%-59.4%), followed by traffic (28.7%-31.3%), ship emissions (7.1%-7.7%), and sea salt plus construction dust (4.8%-5.8%). The results of health risk assessment showed that heavy metals in PM2.5in Xiamen Port had potential carcinogenic risk (ECR>1(10-5) to people living near the port, and Cr(Ⅵ), V, and As together accounted for 97.3%-97.5% of the total risks; however, the non-carcinogenic risk was negligible (HI<1), and the major contributors were V, Mn, Ni, and As (89.6%-91.2%). The relative contributions of each contributor to ECR was in the order of traffic (47.2%-49.4%)>industrial (23.8%-24.2%)>ship emissions (16.9%-20.8%)>sea salt plus construction dust (5.7%-12.1%), and the relative contribution to HI was in the order of traffic (38.7%-42.3%)>industrial (24.5%-28.2%)>ship emissions (24.1%-27.2%)>sea salt plus construction dust (5.4%-9.6%).

ABSTRACT

Aerosol element solubility is essential to evaluate the damage to the environment and human health. In this work, the size distribution of total and soluble elements in eight particle size ranges with diameter <0.25, 0.25-0.44, 0.44-1.0, 1.0-1.4, 1.4-2.5, 2.5-10, 10-16 and >16 µm was investigated in Xiamen Island, southeast China from March 2018 to June 2020. The results showed that both total and soluble elements exhibited significant size dependence without obvious seasonal variations, and their relative contributions to PM1 mass were much lower than in particles larger than 1 µm. The correlations between some elements in soluble fraction were quite different from those in total fraction and the correlations also varied with particle size due to their different solubility. The solubility of Al, Fe, Ag and Cr was relatively low compared with other elements. Moreover, the solubility of Na, Mg, Ca, Mn and Ag was less dependent on particle size while Al, Fe and other trace elements exhibited the highest solubility in PM1 and the lowest in PM>10. Overall, the solubility of elements is primarily a function of aerosol origin and size. The carcinogenic risks of metal exposure via inhalation for children (3.31 × 10-6) and adults (4.42 × 10-6) were slightly higher than the guideline of cancer risk with >60 % from V. As for non-carcinogenic risk, the hazard index values for children and adults were 1.59 and 0.53, respectively, with Mn, V and Ni together accounting for >85 % of the risk. >85 % of the size-dependent dry deposition fluxes of the selected soluble elements over the Xiamen Bay were contributed by particles larger than 10 µm due to their high deposition velocities. The atmospheric inputs of bioavailable Fe and Cu to the sea exceeded the required amounts relative to inorganic nitrogen to meet the growth of phytoplankton.
